- 2. 1. Listen to yourself • What are you trying to achieve? • What’s stopping you? – Are those barriers real or imagined? • What do you REALLY want to do?
- 3. 2. Reality Check • What really matters to you? – What do you do really well? – What have you loved doing? – What have you hated doing? – What environments impact on your work? • What MUST be considered? – Create a list of your “non-negotiables” • What’s really stopping you?
- 4. 3. Research • What is out there? – Jobs that are being advertised – Industries and companies you know – Use your network
- 5. 4. Be Smooth! • SMOOTH transition – What are the links? – Same work, different context – Same context, different work – Different work, different context, same skills – What is the point of chasing a job where you clearly aren’t what they want?
- 6. 5. Goal setting • What are your long-term goals? • What are your short-term goals? • Set SMART goals – Specific – Measureable – Actionable – Realistic – Time-bound
- 7. 6. Identify what you are offering • Transferable skills eg communication, teamwork, problem solving, technology skills • Personal traits eg leadership, drive, energy, empathy which have been demonstrated • ACHIEVEMENTS!
- 8. 7. Take action • Nothing happens until you do something about it! • Tips for Action: – SMART goals, clearly displayed, looked at daily – Clear direction and certainty that it is the right path – Support • Pain – What will your life be like in 5 years time if you FAIL to take action now?
- 9. 8. Self-marketing: Your Résumé • Achievement focus rather than responsibilities – Strong verbs e.g. Managed, Created, Organised • Prime real estate on first page • Clear Career Summary at the beginning • Sometimes statement of skills • How long should it be? • How far back should you go?
- 10. 8. Self-marketing: Your cover letter • Grab their interest • Can create the bridge • Opportunity to reiterate key points Any self-marketing or correspondence • No typos, no spelling mistakes, no grammatical errors

Interviews • Ageless – You are being interviewed by an individual not a generation! • Dress to impress – Your age is obvious so don’t try to look 35! – Smart, contemporary, appropriate for the work • Language – Don’t date yourself through things you say • Technology – Ensure that you have the required understanding and language
- 12. 10. Resilience • Dealing with the inevitable – Setbacks – Barriers – Personal doubts – Fear • How will you maintain – your motivation? – your positive mind set? – your focus? • There is no shame in seeking some help.
