What is Leadership?
 "Leadership is getting people to want to
follow. That requires engaging them
passionately, from the heart, and requires
persuading people to change.
Management is tactical; leadership is
strategic."
~ Tom Kennedy
 "Leadership is the art of getting others
to do things you want done and
feel good about it."
~ Dale Hamby
Leadership is influence
 If you increase your level of influence, you will experience
more Committed Performance, increased loyalty and higher
quality outcomes.
 If you have little influence over your people, you will
encounter Compliant Behavior – the minimum required.
Leadership & Attitude
 Event + Response = Outcome
Lots of things happen in our life that we can’t control, but we
can respond  be positive.
 Leaders must create a positive attitude and believe in
themselves.
 Personality: True leadership begins with your inner person.
 Build a reputable character.
 Don’t just “let it happen” but “make it happen”.
Corporate Challenges
 Attracting good people
 Focus on innovation
 Embrace change
 Personal and organizational growth
 Don’t just open your door, open your mind.
 Leader is the one who can go through challenging time
The 5 Levels of
Leadership
Activity: Do you agree with it?
 The higher you go, the longer it takes.
 The higher you go, the greater level of commitment.
 The higher you go, the easier it is to lead.
 You never leave the previous levels.
 It is possible to be on different levels with different people at
the same time.
 You must work to take others with you.
 There is a danger associated with skipping level.
Level 1 – Position Leadership
 Normally comes with a Title or Job Responsibilities.
 Your Authority over other people. The power comes from
your position.
 Give you Right to tell others what to do/ direct their activities.
 Most of us are only at level 1-3.
 Set your SMART goal.
SMART Goals
 Specific – States exactly what will be done.
 Measurable – Quantifiable
 Action-Oriented – Identifies the actions to be taken.
 Realistic – If not realistic, you’ll get discouraged.
 Time-bound – Time allowed is reasonable and not too long.
Level 2 – Permission Leadership
 Relationship is very important.
 You increase your influence by developing relationship.
 Empower people to do things, staff engagement.
 You must strive for a positive, trusting relationship with every
person you lead.
 If you want people to come along with you, they must first
get along with you!
The Law of Connection
 “Leaders touch a heart before they ask for
hand.”
 Connecting with people begins by caring for
people.
 You can care for people without leading them
but you can’t lead them without caring for
them.
 People do not care how much you know until
they know how much you care.
Small things you can do – Love is Action
 Talk with them
 Encourage them (job well-done, keep up the good work)
 Go out and talk about “them”
 Show your concern
 “Thank you” for what they have done for you.
 Encourage them to come to you.
Activity: Attitude Assessment
 What leadership behaviors must I change in order to
improve my attitude?
 What challenges within the organization impact my attitude?
Level 2 Permission
 The last of one’s freedom is to
choose one’s attitude in any given
situation.
 People will only follow you if you
have connected and communicated
with them.
The Law of Solid Ground
 Trust is the Foundation of Leadership
Integrity and Leadership
“When my words and my deeds match up,
I am who I am no matter where I am or
who I’m with.”
~ John Maxwell
Integrity Impact Leadership
 Integrity impacts leadership in the following ways
 It builds Trust.
 It has high Influence Value.
 It facilitates High Standards.
 Results in Solid Reputation, not just an Image.
 Helps leader be Credible, not just Clever.
 It is a Hard-Won Achievement.
Activity: Integrity Assessment
 Consistency – Am I the same person no matter who I am
with?
 Credits – Am I quick to recognize others for their efforts and
contributions to my success?
 Choices – Do I make decisions that are best for others
when another choice would benefit me?
Understanding the Leader within You

Level 4 – People Development Leadership
 Leader that build leaders – Reproduction

develop loyalty
 See every relationship you have as a chance to develop that
person.
 Consistently keep a list of potential leaders you can invest in.
 Select and mentor key leaders.
People Development Process
 People do what they see – and leaders never teach until they
practice what they preach!
1. Model - Be a role model to coach people
2. Coach - Not everybody is coachable, allow them to make mistakes
3. Monitor - Let they do the things and watch
4. Empowerment - (Choose people that have ability to do things,
willingness to do and integrity – because power is seductive).
5. Multiplication
Level 5 of Leadership – Personhood (Respect)
 People will follow you because of who you are,
and what you represent.
 Your staff has the HIGHER TRUST in you
 You don’t EARN level 5 leadership
 It is GIVEN to you by those who follow you!
 Live a model life that others would want to imitate
 Recognize that people are your most valuable asset
Developing the Leader within You
 The Law of Process
 Successful leaders are learners. It requires a lot of
self-discipline and perseverance.
 Leadership develops DAILY, not in a day.
 So what will you do tomorrow?

  • 4. What is Leadership?  "Leadership is getting people to want to follow. That requires engaging them passionately, from the heart, and requires persuading people to change. Management is tactical; leadership is strategic." ~ Tom Kennedy  "Leadership is the art of getting others to do things you want done and feel good about it." ~ Dale Hamby
  • 5. Leadership is influence  If you increase your level of influence, you will experience more Committed Performance, increased loyalty and higher quality outcomes.  If you have little influence over your people, you will encounter Compliant Behavior – the minimum required.
  • 6. Leadership & Attitude  Event + Response = Outcome Lots of things happen in our life that we can’t control, but we can respond  be positive.  Leaders must create a positive attitude and believe in themselves.  Personality: True leadership begins with your inner person.  Build a reputable character.  Don’t just “let it happen” but “make it happen”.
  • 7. Corporate Challenges  Attracting good people  Focus on innovation  Embrace change  Personal and organizational growth  Don’t just open your door, open your mind.  Leader is the one who can go through challenging time
  • 8. The 5 Levels of Leadership
  • 9. Activity: Do you agree with it?  The higher you go, the longer it takes.  The higher you go, the greater level of commitment.  The higher you go, the easier it is to lead.  You never leave the previous levels.  It is possible to be on different levels with different people at the same time.  You must work to take others with you.  There is a danger associated with skipping level.
  • 10. Level 1 – Position Leadership  Normally comes with a Title or Job Responsibilities.  Your Authority over other people. The power comes from your position.  Give you Right to tell others what to do/ direct their activities.  Most of us are only at level 1-3.  Set your SMART goal.
  • 11. SMART Goals  Specific – States exactly what will be done.  Measurable – Quantifiable  Action-Oriented – Identifies the actions to be taken.  Realistic – If not realistic, you’ll get discouraged.  Time-bound – Time allowed is reasonable and not too long.
  • 12. Level 2 – Permission Leadership  Relationship is very important.  You increase your influence by developing relationship.  Empower people to do things, staff engagement.  You must strive for a positive, trusting relationship with every person you lead.  If you want people to come along with you, they must first get along with you!
  • 13. The Law of Connection  “Leaders touch a heart before they ask for hand.”  Connecting with people begins by caring for people.  You can care for people without leading them but you can’t lead them without caring for them.  People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.
  • 14. Small things you can do – Love is Action  Talk with them  Encourage them (job well-done, keep up the good work)  Go out and talk about “them”  Show your concern  “Thank you” for what they have done for you.  Encourage them to come to you.
  • 15. Activity: Attitude Assessment  What leadership behaviors must I change in order to improve my attitude?  What challenges within the organization impact my attitude?
  • 16. Level 2 Permission  The last of one’s freedom is to choose one’s attitude in any given situation.  People will only follow you if you have connected and communicated with them.
  • 17. The Law of Solid Ground  Trust is the Foundation of Leadership
  • 18. Integrity and Leadership “When my words and my deeds match up, I am who I am no matter where I am or who I’m with.” ~ John Maxwell
  • 19. Integrity Impact Leadership  Integrity impacts leadership in the following ways  It builds Trust.  It has high Influence Value.  It facilitates High Standards.  Results in Solid Reputation, not just an Image.  Helps leader be Credible, not just Clever.  It is a Hard-Won Achievement.
  • 20. Activity: Integrity Assessment  Consistency – Am I the same person no matter who I am with?  Credits – Am I quick to recognize others for their efforts and contributions to my success?  Choices – Do I make decisions that are best for others when another choice would benefit me?
  • 21. Understanding the Leader within You  Personal Growth * Knowledge * Legacy * Independence  Faith * Fitness * Family * Integrity  Money * Status * Achievement * Recognition  Choose 6 values that are important to you.  Find people with the same values.  Identify their values  speak on their values.
  • 22. Understanding the Leader within You  Values drive decisions.  Decisions drive behaviors.  Behaviors drive results.  Values change over time.
  • 23. Level 3 – Production (Results) Leadership Biggest reason you were chosen to lead because:  You can get results.  You get things done.  You meet goals.  You meet your superior’s expectation.

  • 30. Leadership – The Role of Vision VISION - DIRECTION Great leaders  Know where they are going  Are able to persuade people to follow them
  • 31. The Law of Buy-in (Support)  People buy into the Leaders, then the Vision. LEADER VISION RESULTS Don’t buy in Don’t buy in Get another Leader Don’t buy in Buy in Get another Leader Buy in Don’t buy in Get another Vision Buy in Buy in Get behind the Leader
  • 32. Communicating your vision constantly  Vision provides the energy  It is a force that can remove obstacles  An effective vision drives the mission and keep people focused  It creates enthusiasm and encourages growth  Vision unites people and increases morale.

  • 35. People Development Process  People do what they see – and leaders never teach until they practice what they preach! 1. Model - Be a role model to coach people 2. Coach - Not everybody is coachable, allow them to make mistakes 3. Monitor - Let they do the things and watch 4. Empowerment - (Choose people that have ability to do things, willingness to do and integrity – because power is seductive). 5. Multiplication
  • 36. Level 5 of Leadership – Personhood (Respect)  People will follow you because of who you are, and what you represent.  Your staff has the HIGHER TRUST in you  You don’t EARN level 5 leadership  It is GIVEN to you by those who follow you!  Live a model life that others would want to imitate  Recognize that people are your most valuable asset
  • 37. Developing the Leader within You  The Law of Process  Successful leaders are learners. It requires a lot of self-discipline and perseverance.  Leadership develops DAILY, not in a day.  So what will you do tomorrow?

Editor's Notes

  1. http://www.dewebsite.org/whatis/leadership-is-self-differentiation.html
  2. One of the best ways to test your influence as a leader is to lead a voluntary team because followers in voluntary organizations cannot be forced to get on board. To find the best leaders in your organization, ask the candidates to leader a volunteer organization and see how they lead without leverage or position or incentive. https://www.sajigroup.com/leadership-success/21-irrefutable-laws-of-leadership-law-of-influence/
  3. Yes for all.
  4. Be a great leader  have good presentation skills. Make sure you can speak very well.
  5. What kind of energy you bring to your office? I don’t want you to be a nice boss, but an effective boss.
  6. Be a role model to coach people. Not everybody is coachable. Allow them to make mistakes
