- A variety of digital tools and media will be used including Edmodo, SMART Board, YouTube, Photoshop, podcasts and blogging.
1. Analyze Learners
There are 20 students that are in 5th grade. Out of the 20 students, 11 are girls and 9 are boys. 75%
of the students were born in the United States, while 25% of the students are foreign exchange
students that were born outside of the United States. Everyone in the class can speak English,
however, English is a second language to all the foreign exchange students.
State Objectives
The 20 students in 5th
grade will 90% accurately know the 5 elements to a story (Plot, Character,
Conflict, Theme, and Setting). The students will 90% accurately know the 5 elements to a story
when asked to write a story of their own at the end of the lesson. Students will do this by
practicing using various forms of media, classroom activities, and social media.

Utilize media and materials
A class Edmodo page will be created to connect and share stories with other classrooms from our
school. SMART Board will be used to create interactive classroom discussions about the 5
elements to a story. YouTube will be used to show a creative and catchy video to help students
remember what the 5 elements to a story are. Photoshop will be used to have students create their
own picture to go along with the story they create. Webquest will be used to create a fun way for
students to find the 5 elements to a story on their own. Pinterest will be used by the teacher to
create an in class activity. A Podcast will be created by the teacher for students to access on the
computers at any time. A poster will be created by the teacher to put up in the classroom stating
what the 5 elements to a story are. Skype will be used to communicate with other students
around the world and see how stories differ to them. Voki will be used to communicate what
we’re going to be going over for the week. Blogging will be used at the end of the week for the
student to write their story in.
Require learner participation
Monday
A Voki will be used to introduce what we’re going to be going over for the week – the 5 elements to a
story. A poster that I made will also be explained and hung up in the room for student to refer to on
what the 5 elements are. Then I will show the YouTube video with a catchy song about the 5 elements to
a story. This day we will be going over what the plot to a story is. After explaining in detail what plot is, I
will have the students complete a Webquest that introduces the students to the 5 elements of a
2. story.Students will also be able to refer to a Podcast I created explaining each element of a story to
complete their Webquest. The Podcast will be available for the student to access on computers anytime
throughout the week (at the appropriate times), especially to help the foreign exchange students.
Tuesday
To start the day, I will show the students the YouTube video shown from the previous day. This day we
will be going over what character and conflict are. After explaining in detail what character and conflict
are, each student will be asked to join our class Edmodo page. Parents and students both will be able to
access the Edmodo. Edmodo will be used today to share stories from the previous year’s class. Each
student will be assigned another student’s story from the previous year to identify the plot, character,
and conflict in. Parents will love this too because they can access and see not only their student’s work,
but others from the class as well. Students can listen to explanatory Podcast if they need help.
Wednesday
To start the day, I will show the students again the YouTube video shown from the previous days. This
day we will be going over the last of the 5 elements: theme and setting. After explaining in detail what
theme and setting are, I will have a class activity from Pinterest for the class to complete. The class will
be broken up into groups of 5. Therefore, there will be 4 groups of 5 students. Each group will get a
different short story to read together. After the story is read by each group, each group member must
pull out a comprehension “wand” from their group box. Each wand has one of the 5 elements of a story
on them and the student must explain their wand to their group. The group shall talk about it and agree
or disagree.
Thursday
To start the day, I will again show the YouTube video from the previous days in the week. Students will
be asked to start thinking about a short story of their own, and start out by creating a picture to go
along with their story. Students will use Photoshop to create a picture about their story. We will then
use Skype to Skype with another 5th
grade classroom at the school our 5 foreign exchange students are
from. Students from my class will share the Photoshop pictures they created with the other students on
Skype and talk about their ideas for stories.
Friday
Students will be asked to create a story of their own using plot, character, conflict, theme, and setting
using a blog format on Edmodo. The story will be saved so I can grade it and will also be accessible to
other students and even their parents. To end the week, we will use SMART Board to play a fun game
reviewing what we learned this week.
Evaluate and revise
Students will be assessed at the end of the week by asking them to create a story of their own. The only
requirement is that all 5 elements to a story must be represented.
