Healed otitis media is the end result of episodes of acute otitis media or otitis media with effusion. It can also result from the natural healing of the ear with mucosal or squamous chronic otitis media. The usual outcome of healed otitis media is a stable ear, but in some cases tympanosclerosis can affect the ossicular chain and cause hearing impairment. Progression can occur through reperforation of the tympanic membrane from subsequent infections or trauma. Hearing is often normal or mildly impaired in healed otitis media, but can be more significantly impaired if there is ossicular damage, fixation, or cochlear damage from previous infections.
