Machiavelli s Republic
State Structure
Simply put, for democracy to exist the state must be accordingly structured with principles of
democracy. The key distinction between democracies and republics is within the limits placed on the
state by the law, especially with concern for minority rights. Both systems generally use
representational voting that often takes place in legislatures/parliaments. In a republic, a constitution
will guarantee protection for individual rights that cannot be restrained by the government. By
contrast, in a pure democracy the majority cannot be restrained in this manner and may, in fact, force
its ideals on the minority. The most successful and ideal type representational republic is that of the
Romans, which Machiavelli holds to a high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These policies can be useful for future republics by also reducing them to their origins. Without
constant renovation, they would not be able to last. Reverting to original principles is only possible
through either external events or according to their own intrinsic good sense (III I). Thus for
Machiavelli, comparing a states modern affairs with that of its ancient is the best means by which to
draw political knowledge from them. True political liberty could only come from a rehabilitation of
states standards. Because a republic is intended to preserve liberty and use it to promote general
wellbeing, it is critical to regain freedom as soon as possible. Desperate times such as war, natural
disasters, etc. always lead to a degree of degeneration, and so it is critical to adjust the government and
its policies in order to regain what has been lost (I I, II). Ultimately, the structure of the Roman
republic and Machiavelli s favorability of it is what distinguishes his true republican nature. As he
advocates for a distribution of power rather than for it to be wholly vested in the people, it can be
discerned that modeling a state after a Republic is the superior means by which to

American Dream Vs American Dream
Climbing the ladder of upward social mobility to attain the highly acclaimed American Dream could
be rather simple if everyone started off on an even playing field, but reality is some start off in a hole
of despair. As defined by Mexican immigrants in East Los Angeles, the American Dream construct
through which the United States is portrayed as the Land of Opportunity promises immigrants the
chance to level up socioeconomically via education, employment, and ethnic or cultural revitalization.
Such promise has become a source of disappointment for many. Others still believe this goal is
realistic, and therefore achievable. Scholastic discourses have attempted to address this controversy,
but have failed to do so. Perhaps because many scholars are fixated on the idea that homeownership is
central to the American Dream. However, in transitory urban centers, residents often prefer to rent
rather than buy. Thus, this definition of the American dream is outdated in today s modern urban
context. Here, I propose a more suitable definition through which to look at the function that the
American Dream has in predominantly Latino poor urban neighborhoods. I define the American
Dream as the upward movement from one tier to another in a socially stratified society. With this in
mind, I will attempt to answer the following; Is the American Dream feasible for the Mexican
immigrant community in East Los Angeles? If so, what is the relationship between the American
Dream and the culture

The Role Of Dance Therapy For The Lgbt Community Essay
I earned my Bachelor s in Neuroscience from Centenary College of Louisiana, where I graduated with
departmental honors. While in college, I co founded a nonprofit that aimed to provide support for the
transgender community, especially those who were homeless veterans. I led workshops at medical
schools to teach future doctors how to provide comprehensive care to the LGBT community. Through
this grassroots community organizing, I realized current approaches to medicine and research focus on
gender in binary ways that leave out transgender populations. These experiences sparked my passion
in biocultural anthropology and holistic human health. My interest in human biology began when I
worked as a part of a team that investigated dance therapy as a form of treatment for the symptoms of
Parkinson s disease. I conducted interviews in which participants completed quality of life
assessments. I learned about the significance of combining subjective and objective measures of
stress. The main findings were that after months of therapy, patients showed slight improvement in
tremor and gait as well as positive emotional life assessments. As a team member, I collected data and
presented research at the Society for Neuroscience. Most research on Parkinson s focuses on cellular
mechanisms in brain functioning instead of treating symptoms as a product of environment. In order
to apply this framework to marginalized populations in my research, I had to learn how to successfully

Holistic Healing Centers
The population is aging. The older population has grown discontented with traditional medicine
methods and they look for alternative ways to treat their aches and pains. Holistic healing is a method
that has gained tremendous acceptance across the country and the world. Holistic medicine is
concerned about treating the entire person. Therefore, their methods might center on paying stronger
attention to the body and mind connection. However, it is important to understand that Holistic
Healing centers vary. Some of the centers might specialize in Chinese traditional medicine or another
method.
Finding Best Holistic Healing Center
Finding the best alternative medical center might seem difficult, but it is easy to accomplish with a bit
of research.

Standard Coding Theory Project Report
EE 653 CODING THEORY PROJECT REPORT REDUCING THE GAP TO CAPACITY OF A
RATE 1/3 CODE VIA CONVOLUTIONAL ENCODING/DECODING ARUN PRAKASH
NACHIMUTHU MARIA HASHMI ABSTRACT In this project we are trying to minimize the gap to
capacity of a channel given by Shannon s theoretical limit of a rate 1/3 code. This is done through a
convolutional encoding/decoding by varying memory elements for both soft and hard decision
decoding. The basic concepts associated with the convolution code with its encoding and decoding
schemes are used in this project. Using Shannon s optimal code we compare the gap to capacity of the
algorithm that is implemented. Finally we show that the gap to capacity can be minimized with respect
to the sub optimal un coded code word or a 1/3 repetition code. INTRODUCTION For a given code
rate constraint of R= 1/3, a binary input AWGN channel this project presents various convolutional
decoder and encoder of varying memory element sizes to reduce the gap to capacity of a code with
respect to Shannon s limit. SHANONS CAPACITY THEOREM AND CHANNEL CODING Despite
the presence of noise, the error performance of a data communication system can be decreased to an
arbitrarily low error rate, so long as the data rate was below a certain level (i.e.) the presence of noise
limits the data rate not the error rate. To improve the error performance of communication system
requires larger Bandwidth. If we are willing to accept erroneous data, the capacity of any

William R. Leach s Land Of Desire
In our human culture, desire has always been prevalent in our lives, as humans always strive for that
longing or want for something. William R. Leach takes the time to explain the type of desire that
changed America s views on consumption in his novel Land of Desire. In Land of Desire, Leach
conveys his main point that during the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era, American society
significantly transformed on a consumer basis. Leach believes that the Gilded Age and the Progressive
Era gave birth to consumer capitalism. Consumer capitalism puts the advantage in the sellers hands
rather than putting the advantage in the consumers hands, which has many negative affects for the
people of America. Throughout the book, Leach has a negative view of consumer capitalism, but
makes the point that the consumer capitalism we know today started in the early 1900s, and he
discusses why it happened in the first place. Leach answers his two fold argument of when and why
consumer capitalism came to be by explaining the events that led up to the rise of this new consumer
ideology, and explaining the people s desire for goods. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This economic and social system known as consumerism, has been studied by many historians, and
Leach dated this rise of consumerism during the early 1900s. Early on in Leach s book, he shows us
an example of a transformation in consumer, business relations. In 1890 we see department stores start
to open, which shows us that establishments of retailers are now making way in the United States.
During this time we see a lot of new types of companies arise, due to this new economic ideal. For
example Leach talks about the advertisement industry as one of these companies that rose up during
this movement of consumerism. We see these industries today because they were first set up during

Listening To Aretha s Song R-E-S-E-T

(Sax)(Baritone), Charles Chalmers (Sax)(Tenor), Gene Chrisman(Drums), Tommy Cogbill(Bass), Tom
Dowd(Engineer), Jimmy Johnson(Guitar), Melvin Lastie (Trumpet, Cornet), Chips Moman(Guitar),
Dewey Oldham(Organ). Track 1 ( Respect ): This is one of my favorite song in this album and by far
one of the most popular! The song starts out with an uplifting and exciting piano introduction. At 1:50,
I think it was quite a brilliant idea to spell R E S P E C T out for people in case they missed it. Aretha

which also speaks for freedom, faith, love, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I could feel her singing with such amazing subtlety soulful passion. Aretha s approach is almost
spiritual by comparison, reflecting her gospel roots of her being a pastor s daughter. During the bridge,
I think she sounds like she has entered a state of joyful religious excitement. I also enjoyed this track
and how she also sang with confidence. Track 3 ( I never loved a man the way ): All I could think of
this track is Wow! to me this song was how Aretha Franklin we have come to know as truly
introduced herself to the word as The Queen of Soul. The song starts out with a nicely played piano
and drums which was an intro to start singing. In the first couple of lines I could feel the pain/emotion
in her voice (from 0:08 0:24). I also loved when the trumpets came in at 0:40, this added a bit of a
Jazzy flavor to the song. Track 4 ( Do right woman, do right man ): This song just happens to also be
one of my favorites. This is quite possibly to my understanding the best version of the song, although
Gram Parsons had a good composition. The song is a combination of beautifully recorded piano and
bass instruments. Aretha Franklin s vocals is totally wonderful and full of emotion, sadness, yet joy all
at the same time. I liked the chorus with the background vocals starting at 1:15, it really gives a

Great structures tell us what society values throughout history. Monuments aren t created just for
having bragging rights over another country. The importance of creating these pieces of art is to retain
the historical events that led to the creation of monuments all around the world. Reaching 630 feet
high and taller than any other structure, stands one of the most recognized monument in the United
States, the St. Louis Arch. Built by an architect named Eero Saarinen, the St. Louis Arch is more of a
commemoration. Not only was the Arch dedicated to Thomas Jefferson for the Louisiana purchase,

In the novel Lord of The Flies, William Golding portrayed Simon as a Christ figure. Simon and Jesus

Simon received messages from the Lord of The Flies while meditating. Simon also tried to illuminate
the children about the myth of the beast and dies a horrific death at the hands of the people he loved.
He received an almost angelic burial. His death marks the completion of the destruction of the island s
civilization. All of these events allude to Jesus s life events, according to the scriptures in the Bible.

Hydrogen Gas Lab
Hydrogen Gas Produced from Metals and Acids
Abstract
Experiments 2 1 and 2 2 study the production of hydrogen gas by different chemical reactions. By
using a hydrogen gas collection apparatus and the principles of chemistry, we were able to evaluate
the data and reach our goal. Experiment 2 1 uses zinc, magnesium and aluminum and how much
hydrogen gas they produce to predict the volume of hydrogen gas produced for different masses of
each metal. In this experiment we see that each metal has an increasing amount of hydrogen gas as
mass goes up, however each metal had different amount of hydrogen gas for the same mass. Zinc
produced the least amount of hydrogen gas, then increasing with magnesium, and aluminum produced
the highest amount. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was an increasing trend because the metal was the limiting reactant in this experiment. The
amount of each metal placed in the hydrochloric acid was fully used up before the acid was. From
Figure 1, it is clear that aluminum produced the most amount of hydrogen gas, then magnesium in the
middle and zinc produced the least amount of hydrogen gas. This shows that the same mass of each
metal does not produce the same amount of hydrogen gas. Looking at the balanced equations for each
of the metals (see lab 2 1, equation 1 and 2), it seems the metals have a similar stoichiometry, however
zinc produced a lesser amount of hydrogen gas compared to magnesium because zinc has a higher
molar mass than magnesium does. Due to this, more zinc is needed to produce the same amount of
hydrogen gas as magnesium. When aluminum and magnesium are compared, it is seen that aluminum
and magnesium have similar molar masses, however they have a different stoichiometry (experiment 2
1, equation 1 and 3). Two moles of aluminum react to produce three moles of hydrogen gas, while one
mole of magnesium react to produce one mole of hydrogen gas. Based on this stoichiometry, a higher
mass of magnesium is needed to produce the same amount of hydrogen gas as

Computing Machinery And Intelligence By Alan Turing
In his paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence, Alan Turing sets out to answer the question of
whether machines can think in the same humans can by conceptualizing the question in concrete
terms. In simple terms, Turing redefines the question by posing whether a machine can replicate the
cognition of a human being. Yet, some may object to the notion that Turing s new question effectively
captures the nature of machines capacity for thought or consciousness, such as John Searle. In his
Chinese room thought experiment, Searle outlines a scenario that implies machines apparent
replication of human cognition does not yield conscious understanding. While Searle s Chinese
thought experiment demonstrates how a Turing test is not sufficient to establish that a machine can
possess consciousness or thought, this argument does not prove that machines are absolutely incapable
of consciousness or thought. Rather, given the ongoing uncertainty of the debate regarding the
intelligence of machines, there can be no means to confirm or disconfirm the conscious experience of
machines as well as the consciousness of humans by extension of that principle. In attempting to
answer the question of whether machines are able to think, Turing redesigns the question around the
notion of machines effectiveness at mimicking human cognition. Turing proposes to gauge such
effectiveness by a variation of an imitation game, where a man and a woman are concealed from an
interrogator who makes

the most well know and well read books of the twentieth century, partly due to its common use in

However keeping in mind any film must withhold a reasonable play time as not to grow dull and
dreary. This caused baz luhrmann to cut out, or shorten, specific scenes from the novel when carrying
it over into film. One such scene was where mr Gatsby introduced nick to one of his friends and
mentor Meyer Wolfshiem. Gatsby described Wolfshiem as a gambler who fixed the World Series.
Wolfshiem appears only twice in the novel with the second time being him refusing to attend Gatsby s

With P G being present in 180 countries there seems to be no real barrier to entry that can t be
overcome. They have some competition from other companies that offer dishwashing detergents
which can be seen as a threat of substitute products. There is definitely a presence of rivalry from
other competitors including the store name brand detergents that are shelved next to P G s product.
Industry Cost Structure
The cost structure is different in each market and country. It is based off of the economy in a certain
market so that it s affordable and economical to the consumers there. Cost structure must be carefully
studied so that the product doesn t fail and remain on the shelf while others priced more reasonably
sell.
Distribution Channels P G has several distribution channels that help them to get their product out to
the consumers. There are stores like Wal Mart, Target, Dollar General, and a number of grocery stores
that sell the products. You can even purchase the product online from a number of retailers.
Market Trends
P G must keep up with any changes that occur in their target market. This can pose either threats or
opportunities depending on the change that occurs. They need to be cautious of price sensitivity and
whether there is a new demand for variety. Also there can be changes that are regional that they need
to keep an eye out for.

This will also solve two main criticism made about Starbucks : a too fast growth and a cannibalizing
turnover in closely located stores. But still, Starbucks needs to work on its image which decreased
over time, and on product quality, because without a good image, expanding is less effective and
efficient. And finally, since the company is no more limited to a coffee shop company, it can use its
new products as a new internationalization product, with new strategies as context changes.
Quantitative Study This study is based on a ranking of countries based on several different data. Each
country if first ranked based on : (1) Its Human Development Index, (2) Its GNI per Capita (PPP), (3)
Its Urban population with number of tourists added, (4) Its coffee consumption (per capita * total
population), and (5) Its coffee trade balance (Imports Exports). These 5 data allow to create a single
index that allows to rank countries based on their development, money available, potential consumers
and market. The trade balance is used to show the ease of importing coffee in a country and therefore
do not care about main exporters. Once ranked, 3 data have been added : Presence of Starbucks,
OECD Country risk and IDA index. End ranking is provided in Annex 4. Among the top 40 countries

We might describe Wuthering Heights as romance because it is a love story, it can be a work of
imagination or because it has an important relationship to the Romantic period in literature, also the
novel is described as hybrid. There are two parallel love stories, in the first half of the novel Bronte
concentrate on the love of Heathcliff and Catherine but in the second half there was a less dramatic
love story between little Catherine and Hareton. The love story of Heathcliff and Catherine is rooted
in their childhood and is marked by the refusal to change. Catherine and Heathcliff were identical in
sharing their perception. Catherine declares, famously, I am Heathcliff, while Heathcliff, upon
Catherine s death, screams that he cannot live without his soul, meaning Catherine. Catherine and
Heathcliff s declarations of a union of souls. Heathcliff was described as a Byronic or Gothic hero
villain might be manageable. Wuthering Heights has strong connection with Gothic romances over
and beyond the Gothic characteristics of Heathcliff. Gothic novels put in an atmosphere of terror and
using equipment of ghosts and the weather outside the house of Wuthering Heights and one of aspects
of Gothic, Isabella and the second Catherine s incarceration at Wuthering Heights, also feminist
criticism established modes of reading the genre as psychological oppression of women. Relationship
between Heathcliff and Catherine is sibling love rather than adulterous romantic passion. This
relationship with Romantic poetry means that Heathcliff, after Catherine s death, becomes a Romantic
hero, with a capital R , rather than a romantic hero with a small

disguises, madness, and the extraordinary things that love will cause us to do and to see. The plot of

Only at the end of the third act the noticeable change in Nora s behavior shows us the emancipation of
women in the modern period, the change in their status and rights in the society.
In both plays music is very important. Listening to the songs, Orsino enjoys the situation of being in
love with Olivia. He doesn t realize that he is in love with love and not with her. This is why he needs
music. It sustains and calms down his stormy emotions, helps him to overcome the pain of unshared
love. In A Doll s house the Tarantella symbolizes Nora s agitation at her struggle with Krogstad and
with her husband. The piano with its black and white keys symbolizes the contrasts in the play
(between Nora and Mrs. Linden, Nora and Torvald, changing in Nora s behavior between the first and
the third acts). Songs, tarantella, piano and the bell rings all together are designated to brake tension
throughout the play. The doors are also the very important part of the setting in A Doll s House . They
make an illusion of the more rooms in the house and give the ides of the positive and negative issues
in the play. Nora enters and exits through the same door. This is a foreshadowing to the end of the
third act, where she exits from the house and Torvald s life through the same door she has entered
them before. When she goes to the door of Torvald s study and listens, it points to the gap in their

Gattaca Genetic Engineering Analysis
The movie s portrayal of scientists makes human manners towards the Na vi look bad because some of
the humans did not care about the Na vi. The military and the big corporation would kill the whole

Rembrandt and The Western Art
Rembrandt uses oil on wood in one of his earliest self portraits, depicting himself in a fabulous
costume that includes a plumed hat, a silk scarf, and an elegant jacket complete with gold trim. There
is a heavy use of shadow, concealing half of his face, with the left half being illuminated by a sole
source of light located out of the frame. His face purposefully lacks an expression, as if to create an
open ended illusion of confusion. Unlike most of his works, this painting is quite large, having
dimensions of 35 by 29 square inches. Although Rembrandt had already begun to attract serious
attention, he had not yet received any portrait commissions by 1629, so this piece may have been
created to show off his artistic abilities. This self portrait currently resides in the Isabella Gardner
Museum after it was purchased in 1896 from a private collector, Lieutenant Colonel Sawyer.8 Shortly
after he painted his self portrait at age 23, Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam in 1631, where he first
began officially working as a professional portraitist. By that time, he had begun to gain recognition
and stardom for his world class portraits. Rembrandt was living in the house of Hendrick van
Uylenburgh, a Dutch art dealer, who introduced Rembrandt to his cousin, Saskia van Uylenburgh,
whom Rembrandt married in 1634. This relationship only further progressed his career, bringing him
in contact with rich patrons awaiting to commission portraits of themselves and their families.9 As

Security Is Not Only Survival, But Living Without Fear
Security is not only survival, but living without fear (Diskaya 2013). These words are essential in
understanding that the answer to dissecting security lay in the balance of varying schools of thought.
This analysis aims to examine whom security is for, rather whom are we securing, be it the state or the
individual. I will argue, going forward that there is no clear cut answer to this question, for security
must exhibit factors of each school of thought in order to adequately ensure annihilation of global
insecurity. Analyzing the works of scholars such as Barry Buzan, Ken Booth, and groups such as the
Copenhagen School will offer a broader understanding of security and what it truly means to be
secure. There are five sectors in which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, without examining threats to these individuals one cannot adequately examine the root
causes of larger scale global insecurities. For scholars like Ken Booth, the sovereign state is not the
main provider of security, rather one of the main causes of individual insecurity. Booth states that their
own governments rather than foreign armies have killed far more people (Booth 2007). Traditional
security policies effectively conceal some of the most fundamental human needs when merely
focusing on security in terms of aspirations to achieve national interests, thus failing to protect the
individuals that make up the state (Stone 2009). As Booth describes it people and groups can only
achieve true security if they do not deprive others of it (Booth 2007). It is not my intention nor do I
perceive it the intention of others to eliminate the ideals of traditional security all together, rather it is
my aim to reveal this non traditional approach in combination with the all familiar state centric
ideology of the realist and neorealist minds. In order to examine how and why individual and human
security is essential to adequately attempting a global sense of safety, I have collected a myriad of
statistics that assist in illustrating the international need for, as Scott Watson describes,
humanitarianism as securitization (Watson 2011). Data collected by

Comparsion of Sandra Cisneros´ Barbie-Q and Annie Chopin´s...
In Sandra Cisnero s short story Barbie Q, a Barbie doll is used to portray the author s inner struggle to
achieve perfection, and how her young age and innocence clouds her identity. Throughout the text it is
very clear that the author, a young girl, had come from an underprivileged family and faced the issues
many families of lower socioeconomic background typically face. In the short story it is also evident
that her gender plays a massive role in damaging her self esteem and confidence, as both the media
and the author s social background have continuously portrayed women as weak, powerless figures.
Similarly, in The Story of an Hour by Annie Chopin, the protagonist, once again a female figure
represented the life of domesticity a woman is expected to hold by society. Although Chopin s story
was written in the late 1800s and Barbie Q is a very modern story, both depict the protagonist females
as very helpless, incapable figures that trail after the overpowering men.
In the second paragraph of Barbie Q, the author speaks from a first person perspective while
describing how she typically plays pretend using her dolls. The narrator explains to the reader that,
Your Barbie is roommates with my Barbie, and my Barbie s boyfriend comes over and your Barbie
steals him, okay? Kiss kiss kiss. Then the two Barbies fight. You dumbbell! He s mine. This text
openly reveals how the young author, who presumably has not even reached her teen years yet, has
been deeply

Gary Soto Research Paper
Gary Soto: A Man of Inspiration By: Josie Estrella Freeman, Bloque Tres, el seis de octubre
It appears these days I don t have much of a life because my nose is often stuck in a book. But I
discovered that reading builds a life inside the mind. Gary Soto. This man has dedicated his life to
reading, writing, and promoting young readers. He is a renowned poet and author for both children
and adults. Soto is very successful at what he does, and he has won many awards to prove that. But
most of all, Gary Soto s biggest accomplishment is inspiring others. Even though I write a lot about
life in the barrio, I am really writing about the feelings and experiences of most American kids. Gary
Soto was born on April 12, 1952 in Fresno, California. He grew up in a barrio , a poor Mexican
American neighborhood. He uses his experiences to write and provoke young readers interests.
Although, Soto s actions while growing up may come as a shock. His father, Manuel Soto, died in a

authors/poets sparked his interest because they all similar in one way: each of them wrote about the

advantage when writing. This is an example of what he expresses in Buried Onions: The black asphalt
would shimmer with vapors. I had a theory about those vapors...not released by the sun but by a huge
onion buried under the city. This onion made us cry...I thought about this giant onion, that remarkable
bulb of sadness. Many are astonished by Gary Soto s remarkable memory. Some believed it to be

Battlefield Vs. Call Of Duty Game
BATTLEFIELD VERSUS CALL OF DUTY
The Battlefield franchise is one of the top selling shooter games of all times. It is best known for its
real life recreation of all out war. This game is a first person shooter team based game. Almost like an
arcade game with the guns on the side of it. Since 2002 the game has been loved by those who
consider themselves game players. Battlefield was different from any other game you could know.
Most shooter games are individual based, but what makes Battlefield different is you must work with
a team. For example, flag football is a team based game you need everyone doing their part to capture
the flag. No one has ever seen a game which required team effort online with random people before in
the history of video gaming. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

known for its fast paced online multiplayer games. Multiplayer is where you play with other players
that have the same game as you (It is like playing chess online).
With Call of Duty, you can talk to a person constantly with no wait within the game which requires a
microphone? Nevertheless, with Call of Duty you are a lone wolf by yourself without anyone actively
playing or interaction with others. You as a player must decide what s best for you even though you
are on a team. Think about the saying Every man for themselves there the title provides the individual

Chemical Reaction Investigation
Introduction:
A rate of reaction is how fast or slow a chemical reaction happens. In order for a chemical reaction to
occur it must have a great amount of energy and the particles in a chemical reaction must collide
frequently. There are a variety of factors which can affect the rate of a reaction, these include
temperature, surface area, concertation, agitation and a catalyst. One of the factors that we have
investigated above includes the measurement of the surface area between three Aspirin tablets. The
first tablet was kept whole, the second tablet was cut into four pieces and the last tablet was crushed
into fine powder. During this experiment my group had predicted that the crushed powder would have
a higher surface area therefore a faster ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because particles in the reaction will move faster gaining more energy causing more collisions
to occur. If a chemical reaction had a low temperature then the particles would move slower and
would less likely collide.
During this experiment, it was essential to have a hypothesis as it outlines your predictions and
guesses. My hypothesis was supported through both my data and research because I predicted that the
room temperature would have a faster reaction rate than the cold temperature. If my hypothesis was
rejected the data would be more accurate. My research would determine if my hypothesis or data was
accurate or not.
Not much problems occurred during the experiment as many things went smoothly. There are many
variables which need to be controlled these include the same amount of hydrochloric acid and calcium
carbonate when investigating the different temperatures and the same person measuring the volume of
gas throughout the entire experiment. Throughout all trials the beakers didn t contain the same amount
of water. Therefore not all variables were controlled. This problem could affect the reading of data. In
order for the results to be more accurate, the method should say a specific amount of what the water in
the beaker should be filled up to. This will ensure that the experiment is more

Abstract Aimee Horton and Malcolm Knowles were giants among lifelong learners and had many
similarities as well as several contrasts. Their passion was adult learning. Both spent their career
passionately facilitating learning for adults while achieving advanced degrees. The two scholars were
very similar in their desire that all adults wanted to and could learn. They saw a rapid ever changing
world and the need to adapt to ensure that adult learners was not left behind or taught like children.
They also had very pronounced contrasts in focus. Malcolm s concern was the adult learner regardless

The Duty of the Federal Reserve
The Federal Reserve Act was signed into law on December 23, 1913. Due to a series of financial
panics around 1907, the Federal Reserve (also referred to as the Fed ) was created by Congress to
promote a stable banking system and an active economy. The Federal Reserves greatest client and
biggest spender is the government of the United States. All proceeds from taxes generated and
disbursements are managed through the account that the United States government has set up with the
Federal Reserve. The Fed operates independently of the government; however, the Feds jurisdiction
originates from Congress and the Fed is subject to congressional supervision. Furthermore The
President nominates the members of the Board of Governors which must be confirmed by the Senate.
The salaries of the Fed are also set and appointed by the government. Although the Fed can exercise
freedom in monetary determinations, the existing relationship with the government invites corruption
particularly with the present administration and its champagne socialists.
Thomas Jefferson in the Debate of the Recharger of the Bank Bill in (1809) warned that banking
systems would decimate America. Regardless of the original premise of good intentions, whenever
any system wields this much power manipulation and avarice ensue. Many consider the economic
approach of our forefathers as too primitive and unsophisticated; however, the laws and standards they

Informative Essay On Margaret Garner
Would you ever take your child s life so they wouldn t grow up into slavery? Margaret Garner is a
famous slave who was born into slavery in 1834 in Boone County, Kentucky. She lived on the
plantation of John Pollard Gaines and was married to Robert Garner in 1849.
Margaret Garner s background consisted of adult life, education, and family life. First, Margaret
Garner married Robert Garner in 1849. He was also a slave, but had worked on a different plantation
than Margaret (Cincy). They had been married for a long time so, he must have had a very big impact
on her life. Second, Margaret Garner had been born into slavery on June 4, 1834. Since she had been

First, Garner made it to free territory with her whole family, despite the challenges she may have faced
along the way. The trip must have been a difficult one, with her husband and four children, they could
have easily been caught (36). This must have been exceptionally difficult because she and her family
had attempted to escape in 1856, which was after the Fugitive Slave Act had been passed, so it was
easier for her to be caught and returned back South. Secondly, she killed her daughter so she wouldn t
grow up to be a slave. When she traveled to free territory, federal marshals broke into the cabin she
was in and Garner had murdered her two year old daughter and attempted to kill her other children as
well (Black). She had done this because she hated the thought of going back to her plantation and
having her children become slaves. Lastly, because she murdered her child and attempted escape,
Garner had one of the longest fugitive slave trials in history. This case lasted for two weeks and was
all over newspapers in town (Cincy). It caused lots of controversy, because Garner s lawyer, John
Jolliffe, argued that she should be charged with a murder trial since she had committed the crime on
free territory; this way, she would have a chance at being freed from slavery because she would be
considered as a free person and her children would be considered free as well. But, the court

Evil And Socialism In Upton Sinclair s The Jungle
! Upton Sinclair s The Jungle is about an immigrant family who moved to America for opportunities
and found themselves in the Gilded Age. The conditions of the factories, housing and workers were
disgusting. Social Darwinism is shown throughout the book with tons of different characters and
metaphors. Upton Sinclair s purpose and main theme for the book was that Capitalism is evil and
Socialism should replace it.
During the book it shows the effect that capitalism has on Jurgis as he slowly deteriorates. It also
shows other characters and how they deal with the pressure of trying to survive. Some of the people
did some terrible things to stay alive and thriving.
! Social Darwinism is when people do whatever they have to do to survive. The people in The Jungle
do terrible things to stay ahead of the game. One example is when
Conner denies everything in court so Jurgis gets thrown in jail. If Conner had told the truth Conner
might have gone to jail too and that would ruin his reputation. Another example would be when
Marija had to turn to prostitution so she could make enough money to survive. She could have gotten
arrested, simply because she was trying to live. A lot of people rationalize their actions with the simple
fact of if they didn t do these things, they cant support themselves or their families. The managers of
Packingtown seem to have the mentality that their life has been terrible so why should their workers
have it any better? Conner is an Irish immigrant so he understands how hard it is to be an immigrant in
America, yet he still treats Jurgis and Ona terribly. It isn t very common to find someone that will help
you out and be your friend. Throughout the novel, Jurgis witnesses more and more people that he
cares about die. There isn t anything he can do about it because they don t have enough money.
Eventually Jurgis starts to do everything he can to find a job or at least money. People are taking his
money and cheating him out of his money. When Jurgis lived on the streets begging, he was stripped
of his dignity. Jurgis ran into Jack Duane again and fully went to the dark side.

assurance engagement is a reduction in assurance engagement risk to a level that is acceptable in the

misstated * A significant difference between a related services engagement and an assurance
engagement is that the auditor does not have the discretion to undertake evidence collection
procedures outside those that have been agreed upon * The auditor therefore only issues a report of
factual findings to the parties that have agreed to the procedures being performed, in which no
conclusion is communicated and which therefore expresses no assurance * An assertion based
assurance engagement requires the auditor to issue an opinion on written assertions made y others * A
direct reporting assurance engagement requires the auditor to provide assurance on the accountability

Creon Character Analysis
Throughout the story of Antigone, written by Sophocles, the minor characters play different
significant roles during the play. They are able to influence many of the major characters by their
different actions. Without the use of minor characters, many of the important decisions made by major
characters would not have been made during the play. There are many characters who were able to
influence the king, Creon. Specifically, the minor character, Leader, plays a major role in the character
development of Creon, from the beginning to the end of the play. Leader uses his actions, and unique

Bilingualism And Bilingual Education
As the previous discussion has shown, the notions bilingualism and bilingual education are pretty
complex. Summing up, bilingualism exists in different levels, which are defined as termed individual
bilingualism and societal bilingualism. These forms are typical either for the whole language
minorities (communities) or for an individual. This should be taken into account for bilingual
education, which can be described as language possession at the individual level. From the research
that has been carried out, it is possible to conclude that this issue is very complex and can be described
by various dimensions, such as language ability, achievement, competences, performance, proficiency
and skills, as well as the age of language acquisition, the balance of two languages, context of
language usage. Considering the bilingual education as an additional opportunity of foreign language

A Feminist Film Theorist Who Is Best Known For Her Essay...
Laura Mulvey is a British feminist film theorist who is best known for her essay Visual Pleasure and
Narrative Cinema. In this essay, she claimed that men and women are positioned differently by
cinema: men are the subjects who drive the story s plot, while women are objects solely for male
desire. Her theories were heavily influenced by Jacques Lacan and Sigmund Freud, while also
including psychoanalysis and feminism. Mulvey used Lacanian psychoanalysis to support her account
of gendered subjectivity, visual pleasure, and desire. She is also widely known for her theory of sexual
objectification of women in the media, or more commonly known as The Male Gaze theory. As one of
the most recognized theorists in the world, Mulvey s ideas and proof of misogyny in film opened eyes
around the world and female objectification was finally questioned. Mulvey was born in Oxford on
August 15, 1941 and studied History at St. Hilda s Oxford University. She came to prominence as a
film theorist in the early 1970s and wrote for periodicals such as Spare and Seven Days. Her early
critical works analyzed questions of spectatorial identification and its relationship to the male gaze,
and her works, especially her essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, helped feminist film theory
become a serious field of study. Mulvey is currently a professor of Film and Media Studies at

The main reasons for the dismissal of U.S. Attorney were unclear. Some people suggested that the

Parra is the second book that we look at in the analysis. This short children s book was published in
February of 2013. The reader is following along as the author is listing the various shapes and ... Show

On both pages, this individual of color is portrayed as smaller than the adult white male and placed in
the background making seem as if he less important than the white individual. This reinforces the false
stereotype that African Americans are untrustworthy and incapable of holding positions of power. The
reader is forced to believe that the white individual is the leader and giving orders to everybody else in
the space station. This individual of color is also drawn smaller than the two young white males and
anyone other than young children will now that this portrayal is false because children are always
smaller than grown individuals. Minorities aren t the only ones that are being discriminated in this
short children s book. Women are another major group of individuals that are being victimized by the
authors. First, the reader is never introduced to a mother of the young children and we have to
understand that most likely these young boys aren t living alone. There are no pictures of her in the
room and she is not coming up to tuck them in or shut their bedroom window. This leaves an older
reader like myself to wonder if she is a neglectful parent because the author is showing no love on her
part. However, there are some women found throughout the book but in the roles in which a male

Why Is Apple Jarpods Useful
My Apple Earpods are very useful in my everyday life. They help me listen to my music and let s me
listen to my favorite youtube videos privately. Without my Apple Earpods I wouldn t concentrate in
some of my work because they help me stay focused on my work. They are very useful when you are
not doing nothing in class. They are also very useful if you love doing sports and love working out.
That s the reason why it benefits me and can benefit others. It s not fun once they mess up or lose
them at school. During the research I did on Apple EarPods I found that the latest Earpods were
designed with a slightly longer strain relief, a slightly smaller speaker grill, and the left/right marking
being moved from the outside to the inside. The

Summer s Response To Crisis
I love Maury, I am glad the video wasn t the Jerry Springer show. I am on able to imagine myself in an
abusers shoe, but abusers may believe their behavior is normal depending on how they approach
conflict. I have been in the victim s shoes before, however not as bad as Summer s situation. Being the
victim can make you feel hopeless and trapped by not being able to see the way out of your negative
situation. Summer responds to conflict in a passive nonassertive style, meanwhile her husband s
response to conflict in an extreme aggressive style. The short clip shows the viewer the amount of
suffering summer indoors while staying married to her abuser. As adults, stress is highly abundant in
our lives which could lead me to believe that an

  • 2. Machiavelli s Republic State Structure Simply put, for democracy to exist the state must be accordingly structured with principles of democracy. The key distinction between democracies and republics is within the limits placed on the state by the law, especially with concern for minority rights. Both systems generally use representational voting that often takes place in legislatures/parliaments. In a republic, a constitution will guarantee protection for individual rights that cannot be restrained by the government. By contrast, in a pure democracy the majority cannot be restrained in this manner and may, in fact, force its ideals on the minority. The most successful and ideal type representational republic is that of the Romans, which Machiavelli holds to a high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These policies can be useful for future republics by also reducing them to their origins. Without constant renovation, they would not be able to last. Reverting to original principles is only possible through either external events or according to their own intrinsic good sense (III I). Thus for Machiavelli, comparing a states modern affairs with that of its ancient is the best means by which to draw political knowledge from them. True political liberty could only come from a rehabilitation of states standards. Because a republic is intended to preserve liberty and use it to promote general wellbeing, it is critical to regain freedom as soon as possible. Desperate times such as war, natural disasters, etc. always lead to a degree of degeneration, and so it is critical to adjust the government and its policies in order to regain what has been lost (I I, II). Ultimately, the structure of the Roman republic and Machiavelli s favorability of it is what distinguishes his true republican nature. As he advocates for a distribution of power rather than for it to be wholly vested in the people, it can be discerned that modeling a state after a Republic is the superior means by which to ... • 3. American Dream Vs American Dream Climbing the ladder of upward social mobility to attain the highly acclaimed American Dream could be rather simple if everyone started off on an even playing field, but reality is some start off in a hole of despair. As defined by Mexican immigrants in East Los Angeles, the American Dream construct through which the United States is portrayed as the Land of Opportunity promises immigrants the chance to level up socioeconomically via education, employment, and ethnic or cultural revitalization. Such promise has become a source of disappointment for many. Others still believe this goal is realistic, and therefore achievable. Scholastic discourses have attempted to address this controversy, but have failed to do so. Perhaps because many scholars are fixated on the idea that homeownership is central to the American Dream. However, in transitory urban centers, residents often prefer to rent rather than buy. Thus, this definition of the American dream is outdated in today s modern urban context. Here, I propose a more suitable definition through which to look at the function that the American Dream has in predominantly Latino poor urban neighborhoods. I define the American Dream as the upward movement from one tier to another in a socially stratified society. With this in mind, I will attempt to answer the following; Is the American Dream feasible for the Mexican immigrant community in East Los Angeles? If so, what is the relationship between the American Dream and the culture ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Role Of Dance Therapy For The Lgbt Community Essay I earned my Bachelor s in Neuroscience from Centenary College of Louisiana, where I graduated with departmental honors. While in college, I co founded a nonprofit that aimed to provide support for the transgender community, especially those who were homeless veterans. I led workshops at medical schools to teach future doctors how to provide comprehensive care to the LGBT community. Through this grassroots community organizing, I realized current approaches to medicine and research focus on gender in binary ways that leave out transgender populations. These experiences sparked my passion in biocultural anthropology and holistic human health. My interest in human biology began when I worked as a part of a team that investigated dance therapy as a form of treatment for the symptoms of Parkinson s disease. I conducted interviews in which participants completed quality of life assessments. I learned about the significance of combining subjective and objective measures of stress. The main findings were that after months of therapy, patients showed slight improvement in tremor and gait as well as positive emotional life assessments. As a team member, I collected data and presented research at the Society for Neuroscience. Most research on Parkinson s focuses on cellular mechanisms in brain functioning instead of treating symptoms as a product of environment. In order to apply this framework to marginalized populations in my research, I had to learn how to successfully engage in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Standard Coding Theory Project Report EE 653 CODING THEORY PROJECT REPORT REDUCING THE GAP TO CAPACITY OF A RATE 1/3 CODE VIA CONVOLUTIONAL ENCODING/DECODING ARUN PRAKASH NACHIMUTHU MARIA HASHMI ABSTRACT In this project we are trying to minimize the gap to capacity of a channel given by Shannon s theoretical limit of a rate 1/3 code. This is done through a convolutional encoding/decoding by varying memory elements for both soft and hard decision decoding. The basic concepts associated with the convolution code with its encoding and decoding schemes are used in this project. Using Shannon s optimal code we compare the gap to capacity of the algorithm that is implemented. Finally we show that the gap to capacity can be minimized with respect to the sub optimal un coded code word or a 1/3 repetition code. INTRODUCTION For a given code rate constraint of R= 1/3, a binary input AWGN channel this project presents various convolutional decoder and encoder of varying memory element sizes to reduce the gap to capacity of a code with respect to Shannon s limit. SHANONS CAPACITY THEOREM AND CHANNEL CODING Despite the presence of noise, the error performance of a data communication system can be decreased to an arbitrarily low error rate, so long as the data rate was below a certain level (i.e.) the presence of noise limits the data rate not the error rate. To improve the error performance of communication system requires larger Bandwidth. If we are willing to accept erroneous data, the capacity of any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. William R. Leach s Land Of Desire In our human culture, desire has always been prevalent in our lives, as humans always strive for that longing or want for something. William R. Leach takes the time to explain the type of desire that changed America s views on consumption in his novel Land of Desire. In Land of Desire, Leach conveys his main point that during the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era, American society significantly transformed on a consumer basis. Leach believes that the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era gave birth to consumer capitalism. Consumer capitalism puts the advantage in the sellers hands rather than putting the advantage in the consumers hands, which has many negative affects for the people of America. Throughout the book, Leach has a negative view of consumer capitalism, but makes the point that the consumer capitalism we know today started in the early 1900s, and he discusses why it happened in the first place. Leach answers his two fold argument of when and why consumer capitalism came to be by explaining the events that led up to the rise of this new consumer ideology, and explaining the people s desire for goods. ... Track 3 ( I never loved a man the way ): All I could think of this track is Wow! to me this song was how Aretha Franklin we have come to know as truly introduced herself to the word as The Queen of Soul. This is quite possibly to my understanding the best version of the song, although Gram Parsons had a good composition. The song is a combination of beautifully recorded piano and bass instruments. There was an increasing trend because the metal was the limiting reactant in this experiment. The amount of each metal placed in the hydrochloric acid was fully used up before the acid was. From Figure 1, it is clear that aluminum produced the most amount of hydrogen gas, then magnesium in the middle and zinc produced the least amount of hydrogen gas. This shows that the same mass of each metal does not produce the same amount of hydrogen gas. Looking at the balanced equations for each of the metals (see lab 2 1, equation 1 and 2), it seems the metals have a similar stoichiometry, however zinc produced a lesser amount of hydrogen gas compared to magnesium because zinc has a higher molar mass than magnesium does. Due to this, more zinc is needed to produce the same amount of hydrogen gas as magnesium. When aluminum and magnesium are compared, it is seen that aluminum and magnesium have similar molar masses, however they have a different stoichiometry (experiment 2 1, equation 1 and 3). • 13. Computing Machinery And Intelligence By Alan Turing In his paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence, Alan Turing sets out to answer the question of whether machines can think in the same humans can by conceptualizing the question in concrete terms. In simple terms, Turing redefines the question by posing whether a machine can replicate the cognition of a human being. Yet, some may object to the notion that Turing s new question effectively captures the nature of machines capacity for thought or consciousness, such as John Searle. In his Chinese room thought experiment, Searle outlines a scenario that implies machines apparent replication of human cognition does not yield conscious understanding. While Searle s Chinese thought experiment demonstrates how a Turing test is not sufficient to establish that a machine can possess consciousness or thought, this argument does not prove that machines are absolutely incapable of consciousness or thought. Rather, given the ongoing uncertainty of the debate regarding the intelligence of machines, there can be no means to confirm or disconfirm the conscious experience of machines as well as the consciousness of humans by extension of that principle. In attempting to answer the question of whether machines are able to think, Turing redesigns the question around the notion of machines effectiveness at mimicking human cognition. Turing proposes to gauge such effectiveness by a variation of an imitation game, where a man and a woman are concealed from an interrogator who makes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Chemical Reaction Investigation Introduction: A rate of reaction is how fast or slow a chemical reaction happens. In order for a chemical reaction to occur it must have a great amount of energy and the particles in a chemical reaction must collide frequently. There are a variety of factors which can affect the rate of a reaction, these include temperature, surface area, concertation, agitation and a catalyst. One of the factors that we have investigated above includes the measurement of the surface area between three Aspirin tablets. The first tablet was kept whole, the second tablet was cut into four pieces and the last tablet was crushed into fine powder. During this experiment my group had predicted that the crushed powder would have a higher surface area therefore a faster ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is because particles in the reaction will move faster gaining more energy causing more collisions to occur. If a chemical reaction had a low temperature then the particles would move slower and would less likely collide. During this experiment, it was essential to have a hypothesis as it outlines your predictions and guesses. My hypothesis was supported through both my data and research because I predicted that the room temperature would have a faster reaction rate than the cold temperature. If my hypothesis was rejected the data would be more accurate. My research would determine if my hypothesis or data was accurate or not. Not much problems occurred during the experiment as many things went smoothly. There are many variables which need to be controlled these include the same amount of hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate when investigating the different temperatures and the same person measuring the volume of gas throughout the entire experiment. Throughout all trials the beakers didn t contain the same amount of water. Therefore not all variables were controlled. This problem could affect the reading of data. In order for the results to be more accurate, the method should say a specific amount of what the water in the beaker should be filled up to. This will ensure that the experiment is more ... Both spent their career passionately facilitating learning for adults while achieving advanced degrees. The two scholars were very similar in their desire that all adults wanted to and could learn. They saw a rapid ever changing world and the need to adapt to ensure that adult learners was not left behind or taught like children. They also had very pronounced contrasts in focus. • 30. The Duty of the Federal Reserve The Federal Reserve Act was signed into law on December 23, 1913. Due to a series of financial panics around 1907, the Federal Reserve (also referred to as the Fed ) was created by Congress to promote a stable banking system and an active economy. The Federal Reserves greatest client and biggest spender is the government of the United States. All proceeds from taxes generated and disbursements are managed through the account that the United States government has set up with the Federal Reserve. The Fed operates independently of the government; however, the Feds jurisdiction originates from Congress and the Fed is subject to congressional supervision. Furthermore The President nominates the members of the Board of Governors which must be confirmed by the Senate. The salaries of the Fed are also set and appointed by the government. Although the Fed can exercise freedom in monetary determinations, the existing relationship with the government invites corruption particularly with the present administration and its champagne socialists. Thomas Jefferson in the Debate of the Recharger of the Bank Bill in (1809) warned that banking systems would decimate America. Regardless of the original premise of good intentions, whenever any system wields this much power manipulation and avarice ensue. Margaret Garner is a famous slave who was born into slavery in 1834 in Boone County, Kentucky. She lived on the plantation of John Pollard Gaines and was married to Robert Garner in 1849. Margaret Garner s background consisted of adult life, education, and family life. First, Margaret Garner married Robert Garner in 1849. He was also a slave, but had worked on a different plantation than Margaret (Cincy). They had been married for a long time so, he must have had a very big impact on her life. Second, Margaret Garner had been born into slavery on June 4, 1834. Since she had been born into slavery, there is a large chance she did not have much of an education (Morrison). ... The trip must have been a difficult one, with her husband and four children, they could have easily been caught (36). This must have been exceptionally difficult because she and her family had attempted to escape in 1856, which was after the Fugitive Slave Act had been passed, so it was easier for her to be caught and returned back South. Secondly, she killed her daughter so she wouldn t grow up to be a slave. When she traveled to free territory, federal marshals broke into the cabin she was in and Garner had murdered her two year old daughter and attempted to kill her other children as well (Black). She had done this because she hated the thought of going back to her plantation and having her children become slaves. Lastly, because she murdered her child and attempted escape, Garner had one of the longest fugitive slave trials in history. This case lasted for two weeks and was all over newspapers in town (Cincy). It caused lots of controversy, because Garner s lawyer, John Jolliffe, argued that she should be charged with a murder trial since she had committed the crime on free territory; this way, she would have a chance at being freed from slavery because she would be considered as a free person and her children would be considered free as well. The conditions of the factories, housing and workers were disgusting. Social Darwinism is shown throughout the book with tons of different characters and metaphors. Upton Sinclair s purpose and main theme for the book was that Capitalism is evil and Socialism should replace it. During the book it shows the effect that capitalism has on Jurgis as he slowly deteriorates. It also shows other characters and how they deal with the pressure of trying to survive. Some of the people did some terrible things to stay alive and thriving. ! Social Darwinism is when people do whatever they have to do to survive. The people in The Jungle do terrible things to stay ahead of the game. One example is when Conner denies everything in court so Jurgis gets thrown in jail. If Conner had told the truth Conner might have gone to jail too and that would ruin his reputation. Another example would be when Marija had to turn to prostitution so she could make enough money to survive. She could have gotten arrested, simply because she was trying to live. A lot of people rationalize their actions with the simple fact of if they didn t do these things, they cant support themselves or their families. The managers of Packingtown seem to have the mentality that their life has been terrible so why should their workers have it any better? Conner is an Irish immigrant so he understands how hard it is to be an immigrant in America, yet he still treats Jurgis and Ona terribly. In this essay, she claimed that men and women are positioned differently by cinema: men are the subjects who drive the story s plot, while women are objects solely for male desire. Her theories were heavily influenced by Jacques Lacan and Sigmund Freud, while also including psychoanalysis and feminism. Mulvey used Lacanian psychoanalysis to support her account of gendered subjectivity, visual pleasure, and desire. She is also widely known for her theory of sexual objectification of women in the media, or more commonly known as The Male Gaze theory. As one of the most recognized theorists in the world, Mulvey s ideas and proof of misogyny in film opened eyes around the world and female objectification was finally questioned. Mulvey was born in Oxford on August 15, 1941 and studied History at St. Hilda s Oxford University. She came to prominence as a film theorist in the early 1970s and wrote for periodicals such as Spare and Seven Days. Her early critical works analyzed questions of spectatorial identification and its relationship to the male gaze, and her works, especially her essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, helped feminist film theory become a serious field of study.
