Professor Layton And
Pandora's Box
This game is similar to my own as both are played with a narrative.
This game is played via a storyline with several mini games for the
game player to interact with. The colour scheme used is the same as
my own, both having darker shades and very little bright colours.
The animations are very different however, as the Professor Layton
game has more modern animation where as Zelda has more of a
pixelated, retro animation. Both games are obviously played via a
storyline, both having speech yet you can never hear the characters
speak, only mumble. Professor Layton is less of an action based and
more of a puzzle based game, the main puzzles being finding a
certain item or items and match games. Both games are part of a
series, neither are just a one off individual game; both are proven to
be popular amongst their audiences.
The Legend Of Zelda:
A Link To The Past
This game is the third game created within The Legend Of Zelda
series, created by Takashi Tezuka. The two games are obviously very
similar as they are in the same series, however still different. A Link To
The Past is one of the only Zelda games that uses an overhead
approach when playing the game. The animations seem to look more
modern than the Twilight Princess, however A Link To The Past is in
fact 10 years older than Twilight Princess. A Link To The Past is more
like the original Zelda game using the same mechanics and concepts
as it. Again this game is based on a storyline that follows a specific
narrative. As Zelda is part of a series, players would wait as long as it
took to receive the newest game and queue up outside stores or pre-
order so they could be the first to play it.
Pokémon: Crystal
Version
Similarly with The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Pokémon:
Crystal Version was created with an overhead approach. There are
several other games within this Pokémon series; Red, Yellow, Blue,
Gold, Silver, Black and Green. The game is based in a rural location
much like the previous analysed games. The colour scheme used is
bright and colourful with little dullness throughout that game. The
music is the theme tune to the first original game as that could be
what attracts the audience, therefore hasn’t been changes since
created. Similarly with Zelda and Professor Layton, Pokémon is a
series which makes fans of Pokémon want to purchase every game
created and play them upon release. Having different Pokémon
characters on the front cover of each of the game boxes also helps to
attract the audience, especially if that is their favourite character to
play with.
Super Mario Bros
The Super Mario games are different to the other three games I have
analysed as they’re not completely based from a storyline, they're
more RPG styled games. However, much like the others, Super Mario is
part of a series of several other Mario games. The Mario Brothers are
probably the most well known video game characters around the
world, even having their own TV series ‘Super Mario World’ that was
proven popular amongst their audience. The colour scheme in Super
Mario is much like the other, very bright colours, the game being
based again within a rural environment. The game was created with an
overhead approach when selecting the levels, however when playing
the game the position changes to third person side view of the
characters.
Research Analysis
The products I have chosen to analyse all hold storylines in common,
similarly within The Legend Of Zelda and my own created game. The
only things I will keep the same from the games I have analysed is
the storyline idea. The professor Layton game is more like what I
would like to create and I would like to have a similar approach to
creating my game like the Pokémon and Zelda games i.e. using an
overhead approach when playing the game. The colour schemes are
a little too bold for the game I want to create, therefore will be
taking samples of these colours and making them a few shades
darker. As stated earlier, my game will be more like the Professor
Layton games, yet to make them more individual I will do research
to make sure all ides I have are my own and haven’t been used for
that game.
Interviews
Interview 1
Do you prefer single or multiplayer games? And why?
Answer: I prefer Multiplayer due to wanting to be able to interact with
friends and other players.
What is your favourite genre of game to play? And why?
Thriller/Fighting games due to them having a selection of quick play and story
mode. This variety is a good selection due to giving the player more options.
Do you prefer games with or without a narrative? And why?
I prefer it with a narrative due to it making more sense. When there is a
narrative it creates a sense realism which I feel makes the game never
ending, making the game more appealing.
Interview 1
This interviewee had good detailed answers and clearly knows
what genre game they enjoy playing. They enjoy playing
multiplayer game to be able to play against friends and other
people around the world. They prefer fighting games as it gives
them a variety of options throughout the game. They also prefer
a game that has a narrative as it makes it more realistic for them
when playing the game.
This shows that my audience prefers having a storyline to follow
whilst playing the games, including a little fighting bringing
excitement to the storyline when playing the game.
I will try make my product appeal to this audience member by
having the game based around an entire narrative with a few
fighting scenes included to keep the game from being boring.
Interview 2
Do you prefer single or multiplayer games? And why?
It would depend on the genre of game, if it was a First person shooter I would expect
that to have a multiplayer option, however if it was a puzzle game, I wouldn't’t expect
that to have a multiplayer option but to have a way to compare your score to your
friends and even players around the world.
What is your favourite genre of game to play? And why?
My favourite genre of game to play is a role playing game like the Borderlands franchise
and Final Fantasy Franchise as I like being able to play as a fantasy character that was
magic and special abilities, they’re also very story intensive and interesting.
Do you prefer games with or without a narrative? And why?
Like my answer before, I do prefer a game with a narrative as its interesting and
Intensive. I’m interested In how the game will end and the development of the
characters throughout the game.
Interview 2
This interviewee had very detailed answers showing they had
a good idea about what games they like and clearly have good
knowledge of games in general.
Similarly with the previous interviewee, this person likes a
narrative in their game, however theirs is dependent on what
sort of game they are playing.
Again, within my game I will try and include a narrative during
my game and include some mini games throughout to keep
them entertained.

  • 2. Professor Layton And Pandora's Box This game is similar to my own as both are played with a narrative. This game is played via a storyline with several mini games for the game player to interact with. The colour scheme used is the same as my own, both having darker shades and very little bright colours. The animations are very different however, as the Professor Layton game has more modern animation where as Zelda has more of a pixelated, retro animation. Both games are obviously played via a storyline, both having speech yet you can never hear the characters speak, only mumble. Professor Layton is less of an action based and more of a puzzle based game, the main puzzles being finding a certain item or items and match games. Both games are part of a series, neither are just a one off individual game; both are proven to be popular amongst their audiences.
  • 3. The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past This game is the third game created within The Legend Of Zelda series, created by Takashi Tezuka. The two games are obviously very similar as they are in the same series, however still different. A Link To The Past is one of the only Zelda games that uses an overhead approach when playing the game. The animations seem to look more modern than the Twilight Princess, however A Link To The Past is in fact 10 years older than Twilight Princess. A Link To The Past is more like the original Zelda game using the same mechanics and concepts as it. Again this game is based on a storyline that follows a specific narrative. As Zelda is part of a series, players would wait as long as it took to receive the newest game and queue up outside stores or pre- order so they could be the first to play it.
  • 4. Pokémon: Crystal Version Similarly with The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Pokémon: Crystal Version was created with an overhead approach. There are several other games within this Pokémon series; Red, Yellow, Blue, Gold, Silver, Black and Green. The game is based in a rural location much like the previous analysed games. The colour scheme used is bright and colourful with little dullness throughout that game. The music is the theme tune to the first original game as that could be what attracts the audience, therefore hasn’t been changes since created. Similarly with Zelda and Professor Layton, Pokémon is a series which makes fans of Pokémon want to purchase every game created and play them upon release. Having different Pokémon characters on the front cover of each of the game boxes also helps to attract the audience, especially if that is their favourite character to play with.
  • 5. Super Mario Bros The Super Mario games are different to the other three games I have analysed as they’re not completely based from a storyline, they're more RPG styled games. However, much like the others, Super Mario is part of a series of several other Mario games. The Mario Brothers are probably the most well known video game characters around the world, even having their own TV series ‘Super Mario World’ that was proven popular amongst their audience. The colour scheme in Super Mario is much like the other, very bright colours, the game being based again within a rural environment. The game was created with an overhead approach when selecting the levels, however when playing the game the position changes to third person side view of the characters.
  • 6. Research Analysis The products I have chosen to analyse all hold storylines in common, similarly within The Legend Of Zelda and my own created game. The only things I will keep the same from the games I have analysed is the storyline idea. The professor Layton game is more like what I would like to create and I would like to have a similar approach to creating my game like the Pokémon and Zelda games i.e. using an overhead approach when playing the game. The colour schemes are a little too bold for the game I want to create, therefore will be taking samples of these colours and making them a few shades darker. As stated earlier, my game will be more like the Professor Layton games, yet to make them more individual I will do research to make sure all ides I have are my own and haven’t been used for that game.
  • 8. Interview 1 Do you prefer single or multiplayer games? And why? Answer: I prefer Multiplayer due to wanting to be able to interact with friends and other players. What is your favourite genre of game to play? And why? Thriller/Fighting games due to them having a selection of quick play and story mode. This variety is a good selection due to giving the player more options. Do you prefer games with or without a narrative? And why? I prefer it with a narrative due to it making more sense. When there is a narrative it creates a sense realism which I feel makes the game never ending, making the game more appealing.
  • 9. Interview 1 This interviewee had good detailed answers and clearly knows what genre game they enjoy playing. They enjoy playing multiplayer game to be able to play against friends and other people around the world. They prefer fighting games as it gives them a variety of options throughout the game. They also prefer a game that has a narrative as it makes it more realistic for them when playing the game. This shows that my audience prefers having a storyline to follow whilst playing the games, including a little fighting bringing excitement to the storyline when playing the game. I will try make my product appeal to this audience member by having the game based around an entire narrative with a few fighting scenes included to keep the game from being boring.
  • 10. Interview 2 Do you prefer single or multiplayer games? And why? It would depend on the genre of game, if it was a First person shooter I would expect that to have a multiplayer option, however if it was a puzzle game, I wouldn't’t expect that to have a multiplayer option but to have a way to compare your score to your friends and even players around the world. What is your favourite genre of game to play? And why? My favourite genre of game to play is a role playing game like the Borderlands franchise and Final Fantasy Franchise as I like being able to play as a fantasy character that was magic and special abilities, they’re also very story intensive and interesting. Do you prefer games with or without a narrative? And why? Like my answer before, I do prefer a game with a narrative as its interesting and Intensive. I’m interested In how the game will end and the development of the characters throughout the game.
  • 11. Interview 2 This interviewee had very detailed answers showing they had a good idea about what games they like and clearly have good knowledge of games in general. Similarly with the previous interviewee, this person likes a narrative in their game, however theirs is dependent on what sort of game they are playing. Again, within my game I will try and include a narrative during my game and include some mini games throughout to keep them entertained.
