Solving Linear Equations Chapter 3
Steps to Solving Equations Change subtraction to plus a negative. Remove all grouping symbols and/or exponents (distribute). Combine like terms on the same side of the equal sign. Get all variables on the same side of the equation (move the smallest). Find the variable.
Steps to Solving Equations (cont’d) Find the farthest thing from the variable on the same side of the equation. Determine how it is attached. Figure out the opposite operation to remove it. Do the opposite operation on both sides of the equation. Repeat these steps until the variable is isolated.
If three times a number less 18 is 6, what must you do to find the number? Multiply by 3 on both sides, then add 18. Add 18 to both sides, then divide by 3. Divide by 3 on both sides, then subtract 18. Subtract 6 from both sides, then divide by 3. None of the above
If twenty decreased by 4 times a number is -36, what must you do to find the number? Add 4 to both sides, then divide by 20. Add 20 to both sides, then divide by 4. Subtract 4 from both sides, then divide by 20. Subtract 20 from both sides, then divide by -4. None of the above
Solve: -12 = 2 x  + 6 x   = -3 x   =  3  x  =  9  x  = -9  None of the above
Solve: 3 x  – 3 = 15 x   =  6  x   =  -6 x   =  4 x   =  -4  None of the above
Solve: x   =  24 x   = -72  x  =  -24  x  =  -8 None of the above
Solve: x  = -51 x  = -21  x  = -24  x  = -6 None of the above
x  =  3 x  = -5  x  = -9/5  x  =  21/5  None of the above  Solve:
x  = 15 x  = 20 x  = 17 x  = -27  None of the above  Solve:
One-third of a number less -18 is -3. Find the number. The number is 7. The number is 45. The number is -63. The number is -27. None of the above
Kris earns $5.00 per hour plus time and a half on Sundays. If she worked 8 hours on Sunday and earned $150 for the week, how many total hours did Kris work that week? 16 hours 18 hours 26 hours None of the above
