SECOND QUARTERLY EXAMINATION
I. Direction: Read the different texts and answer the questions that follows.
A. Chechnya by Anthony Marra
Chechnya is the subject of Anthony Marra's novel, in which the torn country experiences several devastating
episodes (specifically during the events of the Caucasian war in Chechnya, Russia). Despite the story's horrific
circumstances, it demonstrates courage, optimism, and a sense of humor. The story's principal themes are warfare,
brutality, death, and human trafficking, all of which are explored in depth. The story is titled "Chechnya" because the
location in which the battle took place is named after the country in which it took place. During the Caucasian War, in
Chechnya, now known as the Chechen Republic, Muslim Chechens rose in resistance to the Russian invasion and fought
back against Russian occupation. Imam Shamil was in charge of the group.
There are four characters presented in the Chechnya story of Anthony Marra: First is Sonia, a surgeon in
Chechen hospital, whom Akhmed talked to when he asked for help to take care of Havaa. She is the sister of Natasha,
and Sonia's (as well as Natasha's) parents are abducted, as told in the story. The second character in the story is
Natasha, sister of Sonia, who died. She was briefly stated in the story where she and Sonia are spending time together
when she was still alive. The third character of the story Chechnya is Akhmed, a medical student before the war and
became Sonia's assistant, and the story stated that he will work at the hospital until a home is found for Havaa. She also
rescued Havaa when the girl's father was captured by the Russians. Last, but not least is Havaa, the girl whom Akhmed
rescued after her father was captured by the Russians. She was taken to the hospital by Akhmed since the hospital is the
safest place during the war. The story happened during a war where doctors and nurses were in the most need.
The story Chechnya, the incident took place in a Chechen hospital (where Sonia works), and it occurred during
warfare, possibly the Caucasian war in Chechnya, Russia. According to the story, the hospital was the safest location
during the battle, and it also received humanitarian assistance, food, and clean water, and this is where the refugees
who flee are going to (such as Havaa and Akhmed).
The responsibility of looking after war orphans falls to Sonia, a young female doctor. She was unable to care for
her patients and sisters while also caring for herself and her well-being. There were instances of war (specifically
Caucasian war in Chechnya, Russia), human trafficking, and other horrible crimes against humanity throughout the story.
The incident occurred at a Chechen hospital, and based on the context, it appears to have happened during warfare that
was taking place at the time. The fight in Chechnya is separate from the story's internal strife and is now raging. As a
part of the deal for adopting Havaa, Akhmed agreed to work as an assistant in the hospital in exchange for Sonia's
adoption of the young girl he had rescued. Akhmed is currently working as Sonia's assistant while he searches for a
home for Havaa. The story ended in Sonia's and Akhmed's conversation, which made Sonia wonder if Akhmed is
religious.

Shimenawa By Naoko Kumagai
This is a story I was told. It was August 1973. My brother Jiro was four, sitting at dinner.
“E tadaki mas,” my uncle said. Jiro picked up onigiri, a rice ball, with his hands and mashed it into his mouth. Fish
and rice on his plate, untouched. He stuffed another onigiri in his mouth, bits of rice falling.
“Jiro-chan…” A warning from my mother. Jiro opened his mouth wide, splayed his tongue covered in tiny white
beads of rice. Kazuya stood up and roughly pulled Jiro out of his chair.
“What are you doing?” My mother asked, getting up. Kazuya went out the back door, carrying Jiro firmly under
his arm. With the other hand, he picked up a circle of rope hanging on the fence by the shed. In the yard was a large oak
tree with heavy, twisted branches. He wrapped the rope around my brother once, then pushed him to the trunk of the
oak, winding the rope around and around.
“He must eat his dinner properly.” My uncle tied a thick knot at the end.
“He needs to learn to be a man.” My mother was shouting at my uncle; Jiro was screaming, the sound flooding
the sky. Kazuya went back into the house, relaxed and entitled, as if he had just finished a long day’s work.
No one remembers the rest. My mother never forgave my uncle. My father wasn’t there. Jiro can’t recall any of
it. He jokes that the incident is possibly the reason he always, intuitively eats everything on his plate.
