Broken Hope
by Skye Robertson
"Broken Hope" is a short story written by Skye
Robertson that tells the story of a doctor who dislikes one
aspect of his job. The Doctor's job is usually very fulfilling
because he saves people's lives and helps mothers give birth
to their children, making him feel like a guardian angel.
However, there is a part of his job that he hates but it
is not clear what exactly this part entails. As he walks down
the hospital halls, they are painted with bright vibrant colors
and filled with sounds of happiness and joy which creates an
atmosphere full of warmth and righteousness. Despite all this
beauty around him, the Doctor still feels unhappy about
something in his work life which makes him dislike his job at
times.
Unfortunately, there is not enough information to
know what specifically causes the Doctor to hate his job or
what kind of doctor he is but we can imagine how tough it
might be for someone who has such an important role in
society yet feels unfulfilled at times.
The given text is a story about a doctor who usually
walks down the hallway of a hospital full of pride and
happiness. He is well-respected by new fathers, mothers,
nurses, and interns for his job as a doctor. However, one day
he received an email from his friend in the oncology
department asking him to help with test results for his patient
Cora Broehain and her husband Euston. While reading the file,
he saw that Cora had cancer which made him feel sad and
drained of purpose. He went to their room where they were
enjoying good times but was forced to break the bad news.
Cora's husband noticed something strange when Dr.
Kevorkian walked into their room; he looked like someone
trapped in headlights - scared and unsure what to do next. The
doctor delivered bad news that Cora had cancer after
reviewing her test results.
The text tells us about how life can change suddenly
even when everything seems perfect at first glance because
you never know what might happen next!
There is a conversation between Cora, her husband
Euston, and Dr. Kevorkian about Cora's cancer treatment
options. The doctor explains that the treatment for her cancer
is aggressive but normally has a high success rate. However,
because of their unborn child named Hope, they have to make
a difficult decision: if Cora gets the chemo treatment, Hope will
die; if she doesn't get it, Cora will die.
Euston struggles with this decision and tries to
convince his wife that they can have other children and not risk
losing both her and Hope. But Cora insists on choosing to
save their daughter's life even if it means sacrificing hers.
Throughout the conversation, there are moments of
grief and sadness as well as happy memories shared between
the couple before they ultimately make their decision.
The text highlights how difficult medical decisions can be when
multiple lives are at stake and how important it is for
individuals to communicate openly with loved ones during
these times.
There’s a scene where two people climb a hill that is
moving due to the wind blowing the grass in every direction.
They eventually reach a lone headstone and kneel before it.
The man appears older than he actually is due to the pain he
has experienced in life. He looks at the tombstone with grief
but no longer cries, squeezing his partner's hand for comfort.
He reflects on a difficult choice he made but ultimately chose
his partner, and they visit this place every year not just
because someone died on that day, but also as a reminder
that hard choices often have great rewards. He then tells his
partner about never giving up hope, which was something their
loved one taught him before she passed away.
A part of the story paints an emotional picture of two
individuals visiting someone's grave while reflecting upon their
own lives and experiences. It highlights how difficult decisions
can lead to positive outcomes and emphasizes the importance
of holding onto hope even during tough times.
Overall, this short passage reminds us of our
mortality and encourages us to cherish those we love while
striving towards making tough decisions with long-term
benefits in mind.
