6. Memos from Howard Marks, 1990 – pågående…
https://www.oaktreecapital.com/insights/howard-marks-memos
7. Boken bygger på ett memo från 2003
https://www.oaktreecapital.com/docs/default-source/memos/2003-07-01-the-most-important-thing.pdf
lika viktiga.
• Fokus på risk: ”To me, risk is the most interesting, challenging and
essential aspect of investing.”
• Genomgång av Marks investeringsfilosofi: ”A philosophy has to be the
sum of many ideas accumulated over a long period fo time from variety of
sources. One cannot develop an effective philosophy without having been
exposed to life’s lessons.”
• Howardism: ”Experience is what you got when you didn’t get what you
wanted. Good times teach only bad lessons: that investing is easy, that you
know it’s secrets and that you don’t need to worry about risk. The most
valuable lessons are leared in tough times.”
10. The art of investment has one characteristic that is not generally
appreciated. A creditable, if unspectacular, result can be achieved by
the lay investor with a minimum effort and capability; but to improve
this easily attainable standard requires much application and more than
a trace of wisdom.
- Ben Graham, ”The intelligent investor”
11. Anyone can achieve average investment performance – just invest in an
index fund that buys a little of everything. That will give you what is
known as ”market returns” – merely matching whatever the market
does. […] In my view the definition of successful investing is: doing
better than the market and other investors.
- Howard Marks
13. Second level thinking
Millions of people are competing for each available dollar of investment
gain. Who will get it? The person who is a step ahead. In some pursuits,
getting to the front means more schooling, more time in the gym, or
the library, better nutrition and better equipment. But in investing,
these things count for less, it calls for more perceptive thinking… at
what I call second level. [..]
14. Second level thinking (forts.)
Your goal in investing isn’t to earn average returns; you want to do
better than average. Thus, your thinking has to be better that that of
others. Both more powerful and at a higher level. Since other investors
may be smart, well-informed and highly computerized, you must find
an edge that they don’t have.
You must think of something they have not thought of, see things they
miss or bring insight the y don’t posses. You must think differently, you
must behave differently. In short, being right may be a nescessary
condition for investment success, but it won’t be sufficient. You must be
more right than others… which by definition means your thinking needs
to be different.
15. Exempel #1 på de olika nivåerna att tänka
• First level thinking says: ”It’s a good company; let’s buy the stock.”
• Second level thinking says: ”It’s a good company, but everyone thinks it’s
a good company and it’s not. So the price is overrated and overpriced; let’s
sell.”
16. Exempel #2 på de olika nivåerna att tänka
• First level thinking says: ”The outlook calls for low growth and rising
inflation. Let’s dump our stocks.”
• Second level thinking says: ”The outlook stinks, but everyone is selling in
panic. Let’s buy.”
17. Exempel #3 på de olika nivåerna att tänka
• First level thinking says: ”I think the company’s earnings will fall: sell.”
• Second level thinking says: ”I think the company’s earnings will fall less
than people expect, and the pleasant surprise will lift the stock: buy.”
18. Jämförelse av de två sätten att tänka
First-level thinking is simplistic and superficial, and just about everyone
can do it. All the first-level thinker needs is an opinion of the future, as
in: ”The outlook for the company is favorable, meaning the stock will go
up.”
First-level thinkers don’t understand their setting as a market place
where asset prices reflect and depend on the expectation of the
participants. They ignore the part that others play in how prices change.
And they fail to understand the implications of all this.
19. Exempel: ”Gillar du produkten köp aktien”
• Väldigt enkelt och logiskt råd…
MEN
• Etc…
20. Jämförelse av de två sätten att tänka
Second level thinking is deep, complex and convoluted. The second
level thinker needs to take many things into account.
First-level thinkers look for simple formulas and easy answers. Second-
level thinkers know that success in investing is the antithesis of simple.

• Behov trafikljus? Förändring av stadsplanering? Parkeringsytor? Kollektivtrafik?
1984 med filmande bilar?
26. First-level thinkers think the same way other first-level thinkers do
about the same things and they generally reach the same conclusions.
By definition, this can’t be the route to superior returns.
All investors cannot beat the market since, collectively, they are the
market. Before trying to compete in the zero-sum world of investing,
you must ask yourself whether you have good reason to expect to be in
the top half.
To outperform the average investor, you have to be able to outthink the
consensus. Are you capable of doing so? What makes you think so?
Why do others fail?
27. Memo, april 2007
What’s clear to the broad consensus of investors is almost always
wrong.
• If everyone likes it, it’s probably because it has been doing well. Most
people seem to think outstanding performance to date presages
outstanding future performance. Actually, it’s more likely that
outstanding performance to date has borrowed from the future and
thus presages sub-par performance from here on out.
• If everyone likes it, it’s likely that the price has risen to reflect a level of
adulation from which relatively little further appreciation is likely.
Sure, it can go from over-valued to more over-valued, but I wouldn’t
count on it.
28. Memo, april 2007 (forts.)
• If everyone likes it, it’s likely that the area has been mined too
thoroughly – and has seen too much capital flow in – for many
bargains to remain.
• If everyone likes it, there is significant risk that prices will fall if the
crowd changes it collective mind and moves for the exit.
29. Non-consensus forecasts
The problem is that extraordinary performance comes only from
nonconsensus forecasts. But nonconsensus forecast are hard to make,
hard to make correctly and hard to act on. You cannot do the same
things that others do and expect to outperform.
30. Howard Marks 2x2 matris
Conventional behavior Unconventional behavior
Favorable outcomes Average good results Above-average results
Unfavorable outcomes Average bad results Below-average results
31. For your performance to diverge from the norm, your expectations and
thus your portfolio – have to diverge from the norm, and you have to be
more right than the consensus. Different and better: that’s a pretty
good description of second-level thinking.
Those who consider the investment process simple generally are not
aware of the need fore – or even the existence of – second level
thinking. Thus, many people are misled into believing that everyone can
be a successful investor. Not everyone can.
disagreement”)
• Aftonbladet, AFV, Dagens Industri m.fl. är perfekta källor för first-level-
thinking.
