The product research provided useful examples of existing medieval and fantasy works to help inform the design of the animated sword fight. Questionnaires helped identify what elements audiences enjoy in the genre, such as intense fight scenes, so those aspects could be incorporated. However, interviews revealed some people are not interested in fantasy or action, so the product may not appeal to all. Overall, the research methods helped gain audience insights but had limitations in only reaching a small sample.
2. Existing Product
A gif animated image,
it is a pixel animation
like my product will
be, it’s also the same
character as the one I
will be doing, he is
swinging a sword and
the picture has a mix
of dark browns and a
light blue background.
Younger fans may like
watching it because
it’s a well animated gif
so it would be cool to
see how detailed the
animation is.
3. Existing Product
This is the original fight between Jaime Lannister and Ned Stark, two of the main characters of the show, they are in
Kings Landing which is a fictional city created by G.R.R Martin (The Author of the books). The Angle is side on so we can
see them clashing swords.
It is light, and the characters are both wearing some sort of leather outfit, they both have prop swords which they are
fighting each other with, the colours are light creams and dark shades of brown.
The audience for this scene would be for older teenagers or adults that watch the show ‘Game of Thrones’ or anyone
who’s interested in swords fights or the like.
4. Existing Product
This is a poster of the well received film Braveheart, it is a full body shot of Mel Gibson
dressed as the famous William Wallace, he is standing in front of a sunlit sky, which in my
mind signals hope, he is holding a great sword, and the font used is strong and makes it look
like a film about history, the actually character William Wallace is standing strongly and
firmly, showing he is a character that does not budge easily, and holds onto his values and
freedom, it makes its audience want to watch it because it looks action packed, at he bottom
of the poster is the title ‘BRAVEHEART’ this is in a bold font, which makes it obvious what film
you’re looking at
5. Existing Product
This is the animated Lord of the Rings film, it is a drawn poster for the film, the angle is quite
strange as it almost puts us below Gandalf as his sword is bearing down on the ground, this
makes Gandalf incredibly powerful as he’s looking down on us, this also makes him seem like
the main subject of the poster, Frodo and Sam stand by him but look out of place in the
world of violence, they’re made to look weak by the size of them compared to Gandalf, the
lighting is mostly dark except from a light part in the sky which signifies the small good
against evil, the audience would want to watch this because of how full of action it looks, this
would entice them to see the film.
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched
products have?
- All the products I chose are fantasy/medieval, they all feature large battles and historic
warfare, I.e Swordfighting, the four products I chose all have swords in the pictures, I did
this because in my final product I shall actually be animating a sword fight, which I think is
connected to these posters and the scene from Game of Thrones above, all of these posters
also have a striking male figure, which is the main subject of them.
• What aspects of the research will you include
within your on work?
-I will include the fantasy/medieval setting and sword fighting in my product, I will also
include having a strong male character in them, my animation is actually based off the fight
between Jaime Lannister and Ned Stark, which I showed in one of the existing products
above.

Gender
Male • Lots of gore and a fight scene, usually
females don’t like this stuff.
Psychographic
A more violent
and action type
person.
• Fights are violent, so violent people will
enjoy to see them, they are also full of
action.
Social Status
Any • You don’t have to be rich or poor to enjoy
this, anyone from any social standing can
enjoy it.
22. Research Evaluation
• Give an overview of how you conducted your research. Discuss the
strengths and weaknesses of each method
– Product Research
• The product research I did was useful, because it allowed me to get an idea of what other
products were composed of and how they did their fights, and other scenes, it also
allowed me to get a good idea of what swords should look like and what themes other
animated or normal films go for when doing medieval, this will impact my final product
drastically.
– Questionnaires
• The questionnaires helped because I could get an idea of what people liked in
fantasy/medieval shows/films, so now I can incorporate those things into my product, I
also was able to really grasp my audience and I can now cater the whole product to
them, in the real world this would increase sales, which would be incredibly important.
– Interviews
The interviews also helped because it gave me answers that were more in depth than the
questionnaire so I could really get an idea of what people like, it was also on more of a personal
level which I preferred as sometimes you need to know the needs of the few before the many.
23. Research Evaluation
– What sort of a response did you get?
– I got a decent response, most people seemed to like the fantasy/medieval genre and
swordfights, this helped me come up with what I should do for the final product, so
when I make it I can incorporate all these things into one big piece, which will garner to
a larger audience, I would say that I was able to get an idea of what my audience likes
after this, I found out that they’re age is between 14-20 and other information which is
important to my final product.
– How did you distribute your survey? Give an advantage and a disadvantage
– I distributed it to my friends from my city/old school, they gave me answers pretty quick,
so I was able to really get an idea of what people in the range of 14-19 liked about
fantasy, the only disadvantage is it may be too biased towards fantasy and medieval
shows/films, I used a facebook chat, which is ideal to share a link in, by doing this I got
answers quickly and efficiently.
