Idea Development
Factual Production
Topic
StyleI am focused on using a mix of styles for my video, by this I mean that while I am certainly going to be using animated infographics in my video at certain points, I
want to also use my own filmed footage in order to help illustrate my point to the audience, and I also want to be able to merge the two together creating a stark
contrast between the styles of information being displayed, my colour choices are going to be a direct contrast, on the one hand the footage of the city and the
automation will likely be a bland colour scheme to show the possible future out of what is currently happening around us. Whereas the colour schemes that I'm
going to be using for my info graphics will be bright and vibrant in order to capture the attention of the audience so that they don't focus on the background, that
being said I won't be artificially editing the colour scheme of the video as I would prefer the visuals of it to remain natural.
I want the music to create a sort of somber atmosphere in order to reflect the issue being presented in the video itself, with that being said I don't want the entirety
of the video to have the same soundtrack, for instance when solutions are being proposed in the video it would be better to implement a musical piece that is more
uplifting in those parts, then possibly end the video with no soundtrack at all to help reinforce the mark of ambiguity that comes with this topic.
Concept Boards:
A range of ideas to take forward in to production. Should include images, colour schemes and font choices. Could include
mock ups and evidence of existing design work which is inspiring you.
Target
Audience
My film is primarily aimed at an audience that has a more long term thinking method, in that they consider future problems and want to fix them before they start,
this will typically mean it's aimed people aged 15-21, whereas someone who has a job but is currently in their 40's or 50's, it's likely not an issue that they will not
have worry about as much since they're closer to retirement age. So the topic covered in my video is likely an issue that will be more of a problem for young people
in the long term, gender doesn't really matter as it will be an issue that will effect everyone that is looking for work. They will also likely also be more targeted at
people on the lower end of the socio-economic scale, a C2 or D class as these people are usually more employed in manual labour, both skilled and unskilled,
therefore these are the jobs mainly threatened by robots and so they are more likely wanting to know if their job is at risk, the trends in these areas of the country
show that they tend to be more multi-cultural, with that in mind if they lose jobs then it will only serve to increase the cross cultural divide in this country. If this is
my target demographic then it is likely I will also have to make my video suit their psychographic, in this instance the target audience is young so I will keep the video
easy to understand, as younger people tend to want information delivered quickly, they will also be the curious type if they are pondering questions that have far
reaching consequences in the future, they also likely worry about their future but aren't sure what to do about it, and they are also people are willing to accept new
ideas in order to adjust to the changing world around them. As a result from this I should construct my video so that it tackles the issue in a rational way and
proposes solutions gathered from multiple sources so that my audience believes that there is always more than one solution.
However when it comes to assigning someone to a psychographic it can be done so in groups, which in turn be used from a marketing perspective therefore in this
case I believe the psychographics that would find my video appealing are:
The survivalist: These people are the ones that are just trying to make it by day to day and worry about having enough money to financially support themselves, they
sometimes impulse buy but ultimately they just want enough to get by, I think they would be interested in my video because they would want to know if their job is
threatened and what they can do to prevent that.
Achievers: These are the people that thrive well in environments where they have to work long hours everyday and want to climb their way to the top, they are no
nonsense people who dislike anything that they perceive as a waste of time and they take every luxury item they get as a trophy for what they have done, they tend
to be lone wolf workers with only success on their mind. I think this psychographic would appeal to my video because it is proposing the idea of machines taking
something that could make them successful, this way they know what to do and what skills to hone if they want to be successful in the future and to make sure some
machine doesn't take that from them, they would feel directly threatened by this idea because in yes currently robots can only do manual jobs but in a few decades
no one knows what they could be capable of and could therefore threaten jobs in the C1 and even B class, as a result these people will want to know all of the facts,
and indeed the same could be said for survivalist psychographic.
I want my video to start out with a couple of shots of the city itself, before landing on a shot of the presenter from behind, then cutting to their front and the
narration begins, followed by a statement of the advancement of robotics, then a rhetorical question about the problems our advancements pose to us. I then want a
series of shots of the presenter walking through the streets of York discussing exactly what the potential issue is and the statistics being shown by the info graphics on
display. I want the presenter to voice the information shown by the info-graphics to make the facts seem more engaging, I also want occasional shots of them looking
into the distance to help set a certain mood for the video, toward the end of the video I want the presenter to summarise everything that has just been covered, and
a long, low angle shot of this person walking towards the camera as it gradually comes into focus on them, followed by the same rhetorical question asked at the
beginning of the video as the screen fades to black.
In order to cut up the segments of the video from the presenter talking I will put in several animated infographics in order to cut it, I will also interview people around
York, working in places such as cafes and restaurants, areas that are vulnerable to automation and ask them whether or not they're worried about their job being
taken by robots and why. In addition to this I will pull quotes directly from David Autor in order to have an official authority in this topic backing up what I am saying, I
will also try to find a business in York that is primarily automated in order to have visual evidence of what is going on in the world right now and help prove my point
that it is indeed a real concept that is taking place around us, this is likely something that I will include about half way through the video and quote David Autor at the
beginning to call attention to the importance of the topic.
I think it would be a good idea to include the interviews closer towards the end of the video in order to close it off with some final external opinions of the subject,
this would be good to show the viewer whether or not this is a problem that the public are aware of and if it's something that others are also concerned about.
Structure
Structure
Due to the nature of my video much of my factual research has already been completed because there isn't actually existing products per se, simply factual videos and
lectures that cover the topic and as a result I already have a few recorded however this being said I will be researching the topic further. For instance because of the
research that I have already I have concluded that most of the lower paid, physical jobs have already been taken over by robots but which ones? Which physical jobs
are still safe and for what reason? I also need to know what the unemployment rate is at the moment and what the projected figures are predicted to be
approximately 20 years from now for instance, which jobs will robots be taking over in the future, how to prevent this problem from occurring at all before it begins.
People have come up with solutions to prepare for a future filled with robots, however none of them actually proposed an act of pre-emptive action we could take to
stop this issue occurring at all.
As mentioned in the previous slide I will also be doing some secondary research to find out whether or not the general public locally can give some insight on the topic
and whether or not they themselves have cause to be concerned about this, this will also give me extra evidence about the advancement in automation in the area
and so will be of greater interest of the viewer because they will then know if this is something that is going to effect them personally.

  • 3. StyleI am focused on using a mix of styles for my video, by this I mean that while I am certainly going to be using animated infographics in my video at certain points, I want to also use my own filmed footage in order to help illustrate my point to the audience, and I also want to be able to merge the two together creating a stark contrast between the styles of information being displayed, my colour choices are going to be a direct contrast, on the one hand the footage of the city and the automation will likely be a bland colour scheme to show the possible future out of what is currently happening around us. Whereas the colour schemes that I'm going to be using for my info graphics will be bright and vibrant in order to capture the attention of the audience so that they don't focus on the background, that being said I won't be artificially editing the colour scheme of the video as I would prefer the visuals of it to remain natural. I want the music to create a sort of somber atmosphere in order to reflect the issue being presented in the video itself, with that being said I don't want the entirety of the video to have the same soundtrack, for instance when solutions are being proposed in the video it would be better to implement a musical piece that is more uplifting in those parts, then possibly end the video with no soundtrack at all to help reinforce the mark of ambiguity that comes with this topic.

  • 5. Concept Boards: A range of ideas to take forward in to production. Should include images, colour schemes and font choices. Could include mock ups and evidence of existing design work which is inspiring you.

  • 7. Target Audience My film is primarily aimed at an audience that has a more long term thinking method, in that they consider future problems and want to fix them before they start, this will typically mean it's aimed people aged 15-21, whereas someone who has a job but is currently in their 40's or 50's, it's likely not an issue that they will not have worry about as much since they're closer to retirement age. So the topic covered in my video is likely an issue that will be more of a problem for young people in the long term, gender doesn't really matter as it will be an issue that will effect everyone that is looking for work. They will also likely also be more targeted at people on the lower end of the socio-economic scale, a C2 or D class as these people are usually more employed in manual labour, both skilled and unskilled, therefore these are the jobs mainly threatened by robots and so they are more likely wanting to know if their job is at risk, the trends in these areas of the country show that they tend to be more multi-cultural, with that in mind if they lose jobs then it will only serve to increase the cross cultural divide in this country. If this is my target demographic then it is likely I will also have to make my video suit their psychographic, in this instance the target audience is young so I will keep the video easy to understand, as younger people tend to want information delivered quickly, they will also be the curious type if they are pondering questions that have far reaching consequences in the future, they also likely worry about their future but aren't sure what to do about it, and they are also people are willing to accept new ideas in order to adjust to the changing world around them. As a result from this I should construct my video so that it tackles the issue in a rational way and proposes solutions gathered from multiple sources so that my audience believes that there is always more than one solution. However when it comes to assigning someone to a psychographic it can be done so in groups, which in turn be used from a marketing perspective therefore in this case I believe the psychographics that would find my video appealing are: The survivalist: These people are the ones that are just trying to make it by day to day and worry about having enough money to financially support themselves, they sometimes impulse buy but ultimately they just want enough to get by, I think they would be interested in my video because they would want to know if their job is threatened and what they can do to prevent that. Achievers: These are the people that thrive well in environments where they have to work long hours everyday and want to climb their way to the top, they are no nonsense people who dislike anything that they perceive as a waste of time and they take every luxury item they get as a trophy for what they have done, they tend to be lone wolf workers with only success on their mind. I think this psychographic would appeal to my video because it is proposing the idea of machines taking something that could make them successful, this way they know what to do and what skills to hone if they want to be successful in the future and to make sure some machine doesn't take that from them, they would feel directly threatened by this idea because in yes currently robots can only do manual jobs but in a few decades no one knows what they could be capable of and could therefore threaten jobs in the C1 and even B class, as a result these people will want to know all of the facts, and indeed the same could be said for survivalist psychographic.
  • 8. I want my video to start out with a couple of shots of the city itself, before landing on a shot of the presenter from behind, then cutting to their front and the narration begins, followed by a statement of the advancement of robotics, then a rhetorical question about the problems our advancements pose to us. I then want a series of shots of the presenter walking through the streets of York discussing exactly what the potential issue is and the statistics being shown by the info graphics on display. I want the presenter to voice the information shown by the info-graphics to make the facts seem more engaging, I also want occasional shots of them looking into the distance to help set a certain mood for the video, toward the end of the video I want the presenter to summarise everything that has just been covered, and a long, low angle shot of this person walking towards the camera as it gradually comes into focus on them, followed by the same rhetorical question asked at the beginning of the video as the screen fades to black. In order to cut up the segments of the video from the presenter talking I will put in several animated infographics in order to cut it, I will also interview people around York, working in places such as cafes and restaurants, areas that are vulnerable to automation and ask them whether or not they're worried about their job being taken by robots and why. In addition to this I will pull quotes directly from David Autor in order to have an official authority in this topic backing up what I am saying, I will also try to find a business in York that is primarily automated in order to have visual evidence of what is going on in the world right now and help prove my point that it is indeed a real concept that is taking place around us, this is likely something that I will include about half way through the video and quote David Autor at the beginning to call attention to the importance of the topic. I think it would be a good idea to include the interviews closer towards the end of the video in order to close it off with some final external opinions of the subject, this would be good to show the viewer whether or not this is a problem that the public are aware of and if it's something that others are also concerned about. Structure
  • 9. Structure Due to the nature of my video much of my factual research has already been completed because there isn't actually existing products per se, simply factual videos and lectures that cover the topic and as a result I already have a few recorded however this being said I will be researching the topic further. For instance because of the research that I have already I have concluded that most of the lower paid, physical jobs have already been taken over by robots but which ones? Which physical jobs are still safe and for what reason? I also need to know what the unemployment rate is at the moment and what the projected figures are predicted to be approximately 20 years from now for instance, which jobs will robots be taking over in the future, how to prevent this problem from occurring at all before it begins. People have come up with solutions to prepare for a future filled with robots, however none of them actually proposed an act of pre-emptive action we could take to stop this issue occurring at all. As mentioned in the previous slide I will also be doing some secondary research to find out whether or not the general public locally can give some insight on the topic and whether or not they themselves have cause to be concerned about this, this will also give me extra evidence about the advancement in automation in the area and so will be of greater interest of the viewer because they will then know if this is something that is going to effect them personally.

Editor's Notes

  1. Structure: A plan for your video. What is the purpose of the video, what is you intended direction, what are you trying to say?
