However, when performing real-time analytics, timestamps should be first class citizens and we need rich time semantics to get the most out of our data. We also need to deal with ever growing datasets while keeping performant, which is as fun as it sounds.
It is no wonder time-series databases are now more popular than ever before. Join me in this session to learn about the internal architecture and building blocks of QuestDB, an open source time-series database designed for speed. Every six months another zero is added to the boardroom plans. Behind the scenes, there’s a fierce scramble to secure every power contract still available for the rest of the decade, every voltage transformer that can possibly be procured. American big business is gearing up to pour trillions of dollars into a long-unseen mobilization of American industrial might. By the end of the decade, American electricity production will have grown tens of percent; from the shale fields of Pennsylvania to the solar farms of Nevada, hundreds of millions of GPUs will hum.
The AGI race has begun. We are building machines that can think and reason. By 2025/26, these machines will outpace college graduates. By the end of the decade, they will be smarter than you or I; we will have superintelligence, in the true sense of the word. Along the way, national security forces not seen in half a century will be un-leashed, and before long, The Project will be on. If we’re lucky, we’ll be in an all-out race with the CCP; if we’re unlucky, an all-out war.
Everyone is now talking about AI, but few have the faintest glimmer of what is about to hit them. Nvidia analysts still think 2024 might be close to the peak. Mainstream pundits are stuck on the wilful blindness of “it’s just predicting the next word”. They see only hype and business-as-usual; at most they entertain another internet-scale technological change.
Before long, the world will wake up. But right now, there are perhaps a few hundred people, most of them in San Francisco and the AI labs, that have situational awareness. Through whatever peculiar forces of fate, I have found myself amongst them. A few years ago, these people were derided as crazy—but they trusted the trendlines, which allowed them to correctly predict the AI advances of the past few years. Whether these people are also right about the next few years remains to be seen. But these are very smart people—the smartest people I have ever met—and they are the ones building this technology. Perhaps they will be an odd footnote in history, or perhaps they will go down in history like Szilard and Oppenheimer and Teller. If they are seeing the future even close to correctly, we are in for a wild ride.

- 1. Proposal 1 Centre Name and Number: York College 48357 Student Name and Number: George paviour 356382 Project proposal title and date: STM (small town mentality) Main area of activity: Short film Rationale: 100 words approx. My first project was a video that uses similar techniques and styles I want to use for this one. I found in the first project I didn’t plan effectively which meant in edit I was slightly bewildered by all my shots. For this project I will plan every little detail and ensure that in production I can work smoothly without having to change the overall concept. Despite my lack of planning in my music video project, I did maintain enthusiasm throughout. This is due to doing my project on a topic im interested in anyway, therefore I want to do that this time too. I know that in making a project on a topic im interested in I will maintain enthusiasm, just this time I won't let that overcome my planning. I was very set on my idea and just wanted to get into production, whereas this time I will ensure planning is where my focus is when it needs to be. I feel in making a short film, I can stick with the style im confident with, the same as the music video, but add much more detail and have an overall more complex and developed outcome. I feel a short film is the perfect format to present the media I like to make, but then also how I make it. I feel this concept has so many more aspects than a stand-alone music video, so I feel I can use my skills to my full potential by presenting how much more I can do. Project Concept: 200 words approx. My project is a short film outlining creative individuals and how they find operating in a small northern town is an advantage or disadvantage. It will cover 4 individuals and what they do, how they got into it and finally how they feel about doing so in a little town. The films main factual info will be spoken in narration, with small contextual dialogue coming from certain video clips. I will research videos from the early 2000s era that cover similar topics. ‘1up’ is a very poular graffiti art media company and they have basically the exact look I want to go for with their videos, so im going to look into lots of them. Also early rap videos from london in the late 90s/early 200s are big inspirations. The aim of my film is to firstly inspire people in small towns to begin a creative venture, but also to spark more of a scene for urban creativeness in my local area. In trying to spark a local scene, I will target young people in york who are showing interest in the type of subculture my film is about. York currently has an influx in people showing interest in my films topic, so this is my main target audience. When researching, I want to find videos about the subcultures I will cover, but also videos that present a homemade ‘do it yourself’ feel, which I think is relevant to the small town aspect of my film. I will also try to research production techniques, specifically ones that produce an ‘old-school’ look. The subcultures my film covers were much more common in the 90s and early 2000s, so this is something I will take into account when researching and producing.
- 2. Proposal 2 How will the project be evaluated and reviewed: 50 words approx. I want to evaluate the work mainly with audience responses. I will upload the final video to my instagram which has a large following of people interested in my personal creative work already so imagine I will get more than enough feedback. I will ask those who take interest weather they think I covered the small town element to the video, as that’s the real message I want to convey. If all goes to plan and they like it, I will continue to produce products like this and definitely add it to my portfolio for uni/jobs. Throughout the whole project I will reflect and ensure I’m sticking to my initial ideas. I want to make sure I don’t delve to into simply presenting the creative things going on, but actually explain the technical side of things. I feel I could get to captivated by certain aspects and it could end up seeming like a promotional video, not an educational one. One way I can evaluate audience opinion is through instagram. I will upload my film to my instagram which is followed by lots of people in my target audience. I imagine I will get some voluntary feedback, however I will also upload a question box asking people to leave feedback. This should give me a huge range of info as previously I’ve asked for feedback and got loads.
