The document provides initial plans and reactions for a short documentary film. The film will focus on underground music scenes in York like grime, drum and bass, and hip hop. It will also cover related creative industries like fashion, modeling, and graffiti art. The goal is to inspire and empower other creatives in York by showing that it is possible to pursue these scenes even in a small northern town. Sections on music will use styles from old grime videos including filters, fast pacing, and BPM music. Narration will provide context. Fashion segments will have a more professional style with cinematography techniques. Overall the film aims to spark a new attitude and potentially a underground scene in York.

2. Initial Reaction
After listening to the brief, I was very confident with my idea straight away. With previous projects I have incorporated what I do in my spare time to make it
more interesting for me and this project will allow me to do this with much more detail. With this in mind, I decided a documentary style short film would be
perfect, as I can simply document what is going on around me. I want to cover the creative ventures me and my friends are currently partaking in, which are
things like music and fashion. I was thinking I coud do simply a music video and emphasise the fashion aspect, but I decided it would be much more effective
and probably greatly more interesting if I specifically cover these topics. The actual topics I will cover are UK underground music – grime, drum and bass,
garage, dubstep, hiphop. And then a fashion section – modelling, freelance work, brand collaborations. And finally a section on graffiti art – how graffiti is a
form of expression and a lifestyle and how doing it as a woman may be challenging. I think I will narrate the majority of it, to allow for maximum understanding
of what's going on. The main message I want to present in my film is how operating in urban creative industry's is harder in York, or any small Northen town. I
think where I will mainly reiterate this point is with the narration, and most audio from video clips will just be simple conversation for context.
I thought of a few existing videos when having my initial idea. I want to incorporate styles from old graffiti edit videos and old grime music videos. Main style
elements from these are old camera filters/ using actual old cameras and a fast-paced feel with a high bpm music track. Im thinking this will be great for my
music and graffiti sections. The fashion section I'm thinking will be a bit more professional, due to what I will discuss. I will use creative filming techniques here
as there won't be so much moving around like in the other sections. I think to emphasise the professional idea I will use lots of camera shots with obvious depth
of field and lens flares etc. I want to present every aspect of creativeness going on here and so I will show this with the varied styles.
Why do I want to make a film about these topics?
Since my childhood I have been entirely captivated by the UK's underground scenes. Things like rap music and graffiti have been part of my life for nearly 10
years. As I got older, I found a passion for creating things related to these underground scenes. I began by releasing music and my experiences doing so have
inspired the aim of my film. I live in a small northern town which is sort of the polar opposite place to where underground scenes like rap music come from. Due
to this I found it very challenging to find people to work with locally, and to gain an audience here. The main aim of my film is to change this, as I feel my
experiences resonate with every creative induvial in york. I want my film to make youth and anyone wanting to start something creative, who feels unconfident
doing so, feel entirely comfortable putting their work out there. I believe by presenting the active creative scenes in York I will make people realise actually it is
possible to do something like this here.
When out and about in York I have recently noticed an influx in younger people looking like their into the more urban scenes I'm making this film about. This
makes me think York is definitely on the brink of having its own underground scene and it just needs a little push to get the ball really rolling. From analysing the
emerging underground scene in york I have found a pattern with the attitude creative individuals have here. Most people in york who want to do something
like music or fashion, are actively researching or working on something, but they don’t feel they will release this work anywhere. Theres a weird attitude of like
'soon I'll start releasing my work', but this rarely happens. This is due to a stigma in york that’s very present, which is to not take someone doing something out
of the ordinary serious. Hopefully, my film will make people not care if people judge them, and it will show their not the odd one out – people are actually doing
this here.
The reason I think a film is the best way to achieve my goal is due to how detailed and specific I can be. I could make a music video or graffiti edit which would
perfectly present what we do however it wouldn’t show how we do it. York really lacks resources and opportunity so a stand alone music video would still leave
viewers feeling bewildered and unsure where to start. My film should present how easy it is to make something and hopefully make people realise they can do
it, without the use of fancy cameras or established producers.
3. Initial reaction continued
As mentioned before, since my childhood I have been heavily into the UK's underground music scene, and Ive always been especially
interested by the 'do it yourself' vibe of early UK grime music. In the early 2000s a new rap scene was emerging in London that commanded a
much more out there sound than previous popular genres. Grime MC's found it very hard to get radio sets or labels willing to work with them.
The combination of disregard from the industry, and a widespread negative attitude towards the music from the public meant grime got
pushed further and further underground. The pioneers of grime had to find ways to do what they love without help from established people.
They created their own radio stations and media companies with literally no help from experienced people. This time period for grime music
in London inspires me so much as I feel it's very similar to the situation in the north now. We have the same prejudice, and disregard from
established industry people as they did back then. Also, the way the scene was new and out of the ordinary then, is definitely present in york
now. People don’t listen to rap here, or certainly not the rap we want to make, which leaves us with the same challenges they had in London
back then. The way grime musicians used anything they could get their hands on, and boldly released anything they wanted has formed a style
and look that’s thriving today. I feel york has all the factors necessary to form a really unique underground scene. The combination of interest
in London based scenes and the patriotic attitude towards Yorkshire culture would make for a really interesting subculture.
I have noticed recently the explosion of Bradford based rappers 'BBCC' who provide an entirely Yorkshire chavvy aesthetic and I feel york
artists could have this popular factor, while keeping it professional. An interest from the rest of england has sparked towards the sort of
boisterous, 'don’t care what I look like or what you think of me' attitude of these northern rappers. It’s something most of england has never
seen before and people cant help but be interested. Although 'BBCC' are topping millions of views their music is still somewhat parody based.
My aim is to inspire those in york to utilize their northern culture I.e. slang, clothes, activities, but to still present a strong passion for music
and an artistic element.
Through making rap music in York for 4 years I have developed a look and style of both me and my music that incorporates my northern
upbringing but also presents my clear passion for London based scenes. I hope to show people in york this is what they have to do to stand
out. I see it as an advantage as we don’t have to try stand out like London artists do, as we naturally are different. People in york are lost, due
to the lack of any established scene locally, people are influenced from just the internet. This results in a totally random combination of
subcultures with no real identity relating to the city. I want my film to create an identity for yorks urban scene, so people have something to
watch that relates to them. Hopefully as people see this, and relate, they will realize they don’t need to look else ware for inspiration. Overall, I
want my film to inspire, and ultimately spark a new attitude towards creating in york.
4. Mind Map
Short film
• Cover two artists one being a grime/ugk/bassline
section to present northern music and another being
hip-hop. Use 'aaron' (rapper I know) for hiphop
section. Me for other section.
• Use mostly narration with snippets of corresponding
artists music. For example, when speaking on Aarons
hip-hop use say 10 seconds of a music video of his
then delve into say a quick piece of dialogue of him
explaining his music career. It should almost be like an
advert or promotional video for his music.
• the section on my own music will be structured the
same, with mostly narration to simple b roll, then
snippets of music videos and a small piece of live
dialogue from a video clip.
• Explain how this music is a real niche around here
and the majority of people don’t listen to it.
• Explain views of public to things like this going on in
the street
• Explain attitudes from venues/ recording studios.
(don’t want to work with rappers)
• Explain the main genres of underground music here
(in york), and how they formed specifically around
here.
• Explain how small town mentality effects confidence.
• Give examples of established artists from york
• Show how established artists have used being from
here as an advantage or disadvantage
• Speak on classic york cultures
• Mention york areas and if they lack rappers or not
• Speak on the older scene and nights in york such as
'the dance' an old grime night.
• Use clips from oldschool grime videos to show
similarities from our own videos
• Use old camera filters and the 4:3 aspect ratio – this will give the oldschool
homemade aesthetic I want for this section. I want it to be like an advert or
promotional video style, that bombards you with such a range of media very
quick. I think by changing filters/ aspect ratio it will seem as if Ive gathered lots of
different shots and emphasize certain genres specific connotations. For example,
one genre I will cover is oldschool grime, so using these vintage filters will
reiterate the 'oldschool'.
• Have all backing tracks in this section lyrical, no instrumentals. This section
should be entirely rap related.
• Lots of black flickers, glitch effects and really snappy shot changes.
• Use multiple video/ pictures in one frame to create a hectic atmosphere
• Bombard with information and visuals (popular logos, logos of our own, flashes
of text info in old advert style (taccy exclamation bubbles of text)
• Cover two anonymous graffiti artists.
• First 10 or so seconds of this section
will be a compilation of the artists
painting their work with a high bpm
backing track.
• This section will use narration from the
artists, where I use a voice distortion
to reiterate anomality.
• Very dark, almost sinister vibe.
• Very meaningful dramatic narration
from the artists, outlining why this is a
lifestyle not a hobby.
• Glitch transitions
• Suspenseful atmosphere
• Flashes of black,
• Build up type music to create
suspense
• Siren sound effects
• Spray can sound effects
• Cover one model and how he got into it
• Strongly present the york vibe here
(adidas tracksuits, air max, berhgaus
jackets)
• Show his achievements (bugzy malone
music video, london fashion week,
signing to an agency)
• Very dramatic feel with narration etc.
Use descriptive language to reiterate
how impressive achievements are
• Cool garage soundtracks here
• Sophisticated editing and filming here
with smooth transitions and lots of
filming with depth of field/ close ups of
clothing.
• Lots of external media used here
(articles/ outfit pictures/ instagram
accounts)
• Zipper sound effects, Velcro sound
effects
6. Mood Board Analysis
Most of my images use similar styles, with them commonly being either black and white or shot in the dark.
This is due to the grittiness of the scene and the common atmosphere these old raves have. All my images of
people incorporate the fashion ideas I want to cover. Mostly its urban streetwear such as black tracksuits, caps
and beanie hats, or vintage designer shirts such as moschino. This is the classic attire for the musicians making
the music I will cover in my documentary. Quite a lot of the images use vintage filters or are shot on older
cameras such as pentax, this is a classic style used in this type of content and I will certainly replicate it. By
using these old filters you can tell the photographer appreciates the older way of doing things which is very
important in this culture. Hopefully when I use these filters it will show my appreciation for the oldschool and
attract older viewers. Most of the images use large groups of people, this again is a classic look old grime music
videos have to present gang lifestyles and create a threatening feel. Despite this, lots of my images relate by
showing people having fun and smiling. This is something that inspires me lots as I want to present in my video
that despite the initial impression that we are boisterous, thuggish individuals, as you begin to understand us
you see the passion for creating music etc. And that its all about positivity. A common pattern of location in
these images is urban areas. Areas such as council estate towers and trainlines. These areas create again a very
gritty feel and represent big cities which this scene is very much centred around. I will use as many locations
like this as I can especially for my graffiti section, which should use lots of shots of the train tracks.
