Portfolio Prep
I. Intellectual Competencies:
I am a third year college student enrolled at Maryville
University with a dual major in Information Systems and
Business Administration on track to a 4.0 GPA. My education
and work history has taught me to look at problems as a
systemic whole. While addressing issues in the workplace, I
consider all affected areas when developing my solution and
keep a contingency plan in mind whenever possible. I regularly
work with large databases where my keen analytical and
organizational skills come in to play.
My goals for the future are to maintain a high GPA and get
accepted into Maryville University’s MBA program.
In order to accomplish this goal, I need to hone in on my time
management skills ensuring I have an adequate amount of time
to study and maintain above average grades.
II. Leadership Skills:
I have established myself as a known leader in my functional
area at work. Peers look to me for guidance and coworkers at all
levels of the organization seek my input when attempting to
solve problems. At present, I am highly involved in my
company’s implementation of SAP and will be training people
across several departments on entering and maintaining master
data. I will also be developing and implementing an information
flow to assist the data team in creating system files.
My goal for leadership is to continue climbing the corporate
ladder and to drive any team I’m given toward success. I will
build a rapport of success projects and contributions with an
20. objective and quantifiable benefit.
To achieve this goal I plan on making my presence known at
work through providing thoughtful and constructive
contributions and taking initiative on projects within my
competency. For my current projects I plan on developing
adequate, user-friendly training materials that will enable me to
lead my team to success quickly with little disruption to
business. I will also work on developing my charisma,
improving my ability to motivate others and establish myself as
the person others want to work with.
III. Team Skills:
In the workplace I have been part of kaizen events that involve
bringing people from all areas of the company together for up to
a week at a time with a focus on working together to improve a
business process. Each team I’ve been a part of has successfully
improved their process and eliminated at least twenty non-value
added activities within that process.
My goal for team skills is to expand my skills beyond the
workplace, getting involved in my community to diversify my
experience working with a team.
To achieve that goal, I will pay attention to volunteer
opportunities posted online and attend village meetings to be
more aware of happenings in my town.
IV. Adjustment and Flexibility:
I have survived and adapted to several changes at work
including four acquisitions of smaller companies. Due to the
acquisitions, I have had to adjust to several different
operational procedures and five different ERP systems. In the
past three years I have made myself available for travel between
21. Chicago and St. Louis, ultimately relocating to the St. Louis
area once my current company’s epicenter for production
shifted. When a new plant opened, I committed to being onsite
for the first two weeks of operation. I encourage managers on
night shift to contact me at home if a problem arises. I
volunteer for overtime and do not hesitate to bring work home
with me in the event of a pressing deadline.
My goal for adjustment and flexibility is to prove my dedication
and willingness to work long hours in hopes of temporary
relocation to Canada when two of the acquired companies are
brought into the unified ERP system we’re implementing.
To achieve that goal, I will continue to show my immediate
supervisors that my commitment extends beyond nine to five
hours and make my willingness to travel whenever necessary
known.
V. Motivation and Initiative:
In anticipation of known future endeavors I have acted in the
interest of facilitating coming projects by streamlining my
current company’s change management process. I dedicated
several hours working from home toward developing a central
repository for change notice reports that will allow anyone in
the company to search the history of change for any given
product or component and free up the time currently spent by
my department doing that on others’ behalf. In order to
minimize mistakes made by myself and others within my
department, I began tracking the errors made and targeting the
root causes for those errors to allow trends to be identified and
solutions implemented. I work without direct supervision on a
daily basis and continually meet the goals set for me.
My goal for this competency is to build upon the work I’ve been
doing with enhancing information systems and take on
22. additional responsibilities when/where possible.
To help achieve this goal, I will take advantage of the
Lynda.com access made available through Maryville University.
Using the videos available on that website, I can build upon my
knowledge of things like SharePoint and SQL queries which
will assist me to develop or improve information systems to be
more effective and efficient.
VI. Creativity:
When faced with bill of material management problems at work
I’ve exercised creativity in finding solutions through
experimentation with subassemblies item types and adding zero
quantity components as placeholders/identifiers. In a previous
job, I utilized graphic arts skills to create an original, animated
banner for the company website at Christmas time.
My goal for enhancing my creativity is to ultimately learn
programming language that I can use to write custom software
that will provide solution to otherwise unsolvable problems.
To achieve this goal I will continue on the path toward an
Information Systems degree and continue to enroll in classes
covering new technology throughout my career.
VII. Communication Skills:
Through written communication I am able to convey a point in a
clear, concise manner. In the past I have put together training
materials that clearly explain steps within a business process
and how to achieve those steps through ERP software. Using the
training materials I had created, several employees have become
successful in those operations. I utilize different mediums of
communication including conventional meetings, email,
conference calls, video conferencing, chat, and software like
23. GoToMeeting that allows for screen sharing.
A communication skill goal I have for myself is to become more
comfortable and professional in giving presentations.
To achieve this goal I will work hard to make sure I am
prepared for presentations ahead of time, knowledgeable on my
subject matter, and do several practice runs before presenting to
my target audience. I will record myself giving presentations
and review the recording with mentors asking for input and
improvements I could make.
VIII. Administrative Skills:
I am currently balancing working 45+ hours per week with a 12
credit course load. I have established a successful process for
organizing workflow in the technical services department that
provides visibility and prioritization of tasks. I am able to
remain focused on projects and daily tasks while being
interrupted with urgencies from the production line and then
return to my tasks and projects after all the necessary fires have
been extinguished (metaphorically). I have demonstrated
competency in large scale product changes and clearly directed
other departments on actions that need to be taken.
My goals for the future are to expand my understanding of the
primary and secondary value chain activities to better judge the
impact of all business decisions and actions.
To achieve that goal, I will continue working expanding my
knowledge of business processes through furthering my
education toward a bachelor’s degree and eventually an MBA.
IX. Technical Skills:
I am proficient in all Microsoft Office applications with a high
24. level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel. I have advanced skill in
Mapics, AS400, and Macola and am in the process of training to
be an expert resource in SAP via an online training program
through the Michael Management Company. I have already
received certification in SAP material masters and will have
completed several other certifications by year-end.
My goals are to continue my pursuit toward SAP certification
and expand my knowledge of database functions and commonly
used programs.
To achieve this goal I will continue working toward an
Information Systems degree as well as additional certifications.
X. High-Level Learning:
I regularly apply concepts learned in school at work. Most
notably, applying knowledge gained through information
systems classes toward building databases. I have been
complimented and thanked for my tact when dealing with
certain situations and applying concepts I’ve learned in
Management or read in books like John C. Maxwell’s The 21
Indispensable Qualities of a Leader.
A high-level learning goal is to apply concepts learned from
graduate level courses toward business practices to achieve
maximum results.
To achieve this goal I will continue on my path toward earning
an MBA and will utilize the skills learned in that process
whenever applicable to the business world.
XI. Community Commitment:
I have signed up for and received volunteer opportunities
through the United Way of Greater St. Louis for the past six
months.
25. My goal is to actually partake in the United Way volunteer
opportunities I am told about.
Steps to achieve this goal would be committing to a volunteer
opportunity, and making time to do so.
