2 Megan Bowen 02/04/2020 Professor Cozen Comm 146 Interest Paper- Mental Health in Student Athletes I am a communication major so must take this class to fulfill my requirements for the course, however, this class will set me up to understand the in-depth reasoning behind communication. The only rhetoric class I have taken in the past is rhetoric in English, not communication; I learnt about Plato, Socrates and all the pervious rhetors that formed the basis on how we communicate today. You could argue that learning it in English and now in communication it could be very similar or the same, but we aren’t focusing on what they wrote or spoke of but why and how. In this paper I chose to analyze a TedX talk from a student athlete Victoria Garrick called ‘Athletes and mental Health: The hidden opponent’, it discusses the challenges that she faced with mental health, and the struggles maintaining a top sport on a colligate team. The reasons behind this are based on the broad ideas and opinions people have on student athletes and mental health separately and together. College athletics is a huge industry, an incredible achievement to get into a division 1 college on an athletic scholarship, but behind all this there are some dark truths. The TedX talk from Victoria Garrick explains these truths from an athlete’s perspective, this is conflicting to the ideas that an average student or outsider has, it explains what is happening behind closed doors. This artifact was gripping to me, it is something that I completely relate too; the artifact itself is a more personal approach to understand what is happening in regard to mental health in student athletes than just reading an article online. To me personally it is easier to find an artifact that I can easily relate too, something that is grossly underappreciated and classed as embarrassing, such a topic as mental health. There were no obstacles in retrieving artifacts for this interest, it is such a broad area that I am interested in finding more information about. There are artifacts everywhere about topics such as this, articles, speeches, documentaries, all gripping a relatable. In this class I am aware that I have much to learn, understand the way in which we communicate and why, the best ways to communicate, and the best evidence and artifacts to find for a specific topic. Finding an artifact for a topic that you are deeply invested in is different than having to find one that your heart isn’t in. With regards to this paper I am already thinking about ideas of where I can focus my information on next, where can I understand different political views behind this topic? What are the families of these student athletes going through? Mental health and student athletes separately. One very extreme view on the political-left is below. But when it comes to bad for the environment, nothing literally compares with eating meat. The business of raising animals for food causes about 40 percent more global warming than all cars, trucks, and planes combined. If you care about the planet, it's actually better to eat a salad in a Hummer than a cheeseburger in a Prius. Los Angeles Councilmember Ed Reyes, co-author of a Meatless Monday resolution in 2012.137 However, equally prestigious research shows that vegan diets can result in a higher carbon footprint.138 How can this be? One reason is that some carbon footprint estimates are wrong, or rather, interpreted incorrectly. The idea of livestock production being a large carbon emitter began with a report by the United Nations (UN) suggesting that livestock contributes 18% f he ld carbon footprint, more than the transportation sector,139 thus giving Bill Maher reason to point the blame at burgers instead of Hummers. It turns out that this 18% is fraught with errors, a lea , d e e e e c di i i he U.S. For instance, the UN did not account for the carbon emissions involved in making the inputs used in the transportation sector, but they did for livestock. 261 Megaregion Planning and High-Speed Rail Petra Todorovich c h a p t e r 2 4 ? On April 16, 2009, President Obama stood before an audience at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and made an announcement that signaled a new era of passenger rail in the United States. Months before, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) had provided $8 billion for a new program at the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to issue competitive grants to states to make capital investments in high-speed and conventional passenger rail. Little did the president know that providing the single largest boost for intercity rail planning in this country in a generation had also motivated a sudden and giant leap for- ward in planning and governing megaregions. Luckily, regional planners had been studying emerging megaregions for the previous five years, in affiliation with the New York–based Regional Plan Association’s (RPA) America 2050 program. Again and again, the planners had identified high-speed rail as the key transportation investment to serve megaregion economies. But high-speed rail was a distant dream. That all changed with the passage of ARRA at the nadir of the Great Recession. Now a federal program exists to support high-speed rail planning and implementation. Making that program a success will largely depend on the ability of multiple actors at the local, regional, state, and binational levels to come together as megaregions to coordinate and leverage federal rail investments. Revisiting Megalopolis: RPA Resurrects the Megaregion Idea As if planning for the Tri-State New York metropolitan region was not sufficiently complicated, in 2005 the Regional Plan Association launched a national program called America 2050 that focused on the emergence of a new urban scale: the megaregion. This was not actually a new concept for RPA. 22 Control: The Management Control Environment Chapter In this and the next three chapters, we describe the nature of the management control process and the use of accounting information in that process. This chapter describes the environment in which management control takes place: the organization, the rules and procedures governing its work, the organization’s culture, and the organization’s exter- nal environment. Management control focuses on organization units called responsibility centers. There are four types of responsibility centers that can be used: revenue centers, expense centers, profit centers, and investment centers. Profit centers and investment centers may require the use of transfer pricing, which this chapter also addresses. Management Control An organization has goals; it wants to accomplish certain things. It also has strategies for attaining these goals, which are developed through an activity called strategy formulation. Strategy formulation is not a systematic activity because strategies change when- ever a new opportunity to achieve the goals—or a new threat to attaining the goals—is perceived, and opportunities and threats do not appear according to a regular schedule. Essentially, the management control process takes the goals and strategies as given and seeks to assure that the strategies are implemented by the organization. Formally, management control is defined as the process by which managers influence members of the organization to implement the organization’s strategies efficiently and effec- tively. The word control suggests activities that ensure the work of the organization proceed as planned, which is certainly part of the management control function. How- ever, management control also involves planning, which is deciding what should be done. The organization will not know how to implement strategies unless plans are developed that indicate the best way of doing so. 22 2 A L T E R N A T I V E S T O T H E A D D / A D H D P A R A D I G M As I discussed in the previous chapter, the ADD/ADHD paradigm is problematic as a conceptual tool for accounting for the hyperactive, distractible, or impulsive behavior of schoolchildren. In this chapter, I’d like to explore some alternative ways of accounting for these same kinds of behavior. In essence, I present a number of competing perspectives to the biologically based, ADD/ADHD paradigm, including historical, sociocultural, cognitive, educational, developmental, gen- der-related, and psychoaffective perspectives. I do not argue here that any one of these paradigms should replace the conventional ADD/ADHD perspective as the final answer. Each of these perspectives covers an aspect of the total picture and includes important views that are typically left out of the ADD/ADHD world view. Historical Perspective Many books written from an ADD/ADHD perspective include a section that details the history of ADD/ADHD. Barkley (1990, pp. 3–38), for example, points out that ADD/ADHD was first observed in 1902 by George Still, a British physician who wrote about 20 children in his practice who were noncompliant and aggressive, and who he believed had “moral defects” due to underlying neurological problems (Still, 1902). The case provides a summary of the challenges faced by the company in the areas of supply chain management, marketing plans, the creation of economic value and the development of a long-term strategy for profitable growth. Introduction Jack Reynolds hadn’t panicked often since he and two business partners bought Tea and More (TAM) from its founders almost sixteen years ago. As a purveyor of fine teas and assorted food specialties to upscale restaurants and gourmet shops, TAM had achieved a steady growth in market share and profitability since those early days when gross revenues were less than U.S. $1 million and Jack knew most of his customers on a first-name basis. Jack had bought out his partners along the way, making decisions easier. He had grown used to calling the shots on even the most insignificant aspects of operations and sales. But by early 2009, revenues had grown to almost U.S. $25 million. Jack was putting in killer days and had earned a reputation within the company as a temperamental “time bomb” isolated in his corner office, where he regularly dispatched scorching e-mails and voicemails about his latest discontents. Do you imagine a scientist working in a lab, an economist surrounded by computers and graphs, or a scholar surrounded by a pile of books? You are right; each is conducting research. But research goes well beyond the work of a scientist, an economist, or a scholar. Research may describe what you do when you decide what computer to buy, what jobs to apply for, or what music to download. It also describes what effective managers and influential stakeholders do when they monitor a program’s performance, determine its effectiveness, and assess the experiences and opinions of its clients. With information gathered from research, managers monitor their programs, publicize their successes, and identify opportunities for program improvement. Stakeholders may use the information to decide what programs to support and what policies to advocate for. Just as you sometimes make decisions, organizations make some decisions quickly with little information. Sometimes, however, decisions are made after gathering as much information as possible and organizing it. This latter approach to research is the subject of this text. We define research as the systematic gathering and analysis of empirical information to answer a question. RESEARCH AND EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT Research and effective organizations go hand in hand. They both depend on openness, accountability, and a commitment to learning and change. Openness or transparency is a key organizational and research value, which adds to an organization’s reputation. Stakeholders want to know how an organization uses its resources. They want information on what the organization does and what it has achieved. Information on a program’s performance, its effectiveness, and how it is perceived all contribute to transparency. You, your staff, or a contractor may conduct research to gather information. Whoever conducts the research is expected to disclose what information they gathered, whom they gathered it from, and how they analyzed it. With full disclosure, management teams have the information they need to decide if and how they can act on the research findings. Accountability may be thought of as an attribute of transparency. An accountable organization is open and produces evidence that it is meeting stakeholder expectations. Donors, funders, and clients may all want confirmation that a program is well managed and achieving results. You may collect data on a program’s clients, activities, services, and results. Information on clients and activities documents that the program reaches the target population and provides appropriate services. You can link the information on clients and activities to data that can be linked to results. .

The purpose of week 7’s forum is to discuss how courts deal with impact Intimate Partner Violators (IPV) and the impact it has, whether it deters further domestic violence or if prosecution has any effect at all. While earning an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, there was one term mentioned repeatedly when it came to offenders; “Revolving Door”, according to Cambridge dictionary “If you say that a situation is a revolving door, you mean that people or other things are continuously coming and going, rather than staying somewhere” (Cambridge Dictionary, 2019). The same is true of IPV violators, once they receive a sentence that is not serious enough to deter the behavior, the perpetrators go back to committing the same acts. Of course, the severity of the sentence or punishment depends greatly on a couple of factors; “witness testimony, police officers documentation of past events and witness testimony” (Gosselin, 2010). Of course, to protect victims there are victim advocates that provide victims information on their legal rights and in more serious situations victims are protected at undisclosed locations to prevent the violator from coercing the victim from making convicting statements (Gosselin, 2010). Additionally, during the protection period of victims, they also receive counseling and education on abuse in order to help victims connect the dots on their situation and why it is important to separate themselves and in some cases, their children from such an environment. One case in particular, that supports protecting victims of violence is “Giles vs. California” (2008). In summary, Dwayne Giles was on trial for murdering his girlfriend, he claimed self-defense and because the girlfriend was unavailable to give in court testimony, Giles was found not guilty and acquitted. Whether Giles was guilty or not he was still acquitted because of the lack of security on a victim until the trial.Which brings up the DOORS famework defined as “the potential for physical and psychological harm to self and other family members and includes developmental harm to infants and children.” (McIntosh, 2011). Abusive spouses at times do not even have to be present to make threats on victims, they can manipulate others around the victim, such as mutual friends or family (worse case scenario, the kids) to continue the psychological abuse, making it harder for the victim to testify in court. The children involved in domestic violence cases even have a tough time testifying in court even if they witnessed the violence, because they still love their parents and as Kitzmann, Gaylord, Holt, & Kenny, 2003; Medina, Margolin, & Wilcox, 2000 stated “child witnesses of domestic violence have significantly worse…neuro-cognitive outcomes than do nonwitnesses” (Kitzmann, Gaylord, Holt, & Kenny, 2003; Medina, Margolin, & Wilcox, 2000).
