The distinctive appearance of a script, with its divisions into acts and scenes,
identi�es drama as a unique form of literature. A play is written to be per-
formed in front of an audience by actors who take on the roles of the charac-
ters and who present the story through dialogue and action. (An exception is
a closet drama, which is meant to be read, not performed.) In fact, the term
theater comes from the Greek word theasthai, which means “to view” or “to
see.” Thus, drama is different from novels and short stories, which are meant
to be read.
The Ancient Greek Theater
The dramatic presentations of ancient Greece developed out of religious
rites performed to honor gods or to mark the coming of spring. Play-
wrights such as Aeschylus (525–456 b.c.), Sophocles (496–406 b.c.), and
Euripides (480?–406 b.c.) wrote plays to be performed and judged at com-
petitions held during the yearly Dionysian festivals. Works were chosen by
a selection board and evaluated by a panel of judges. To compete in the
contest, writers had to submit three tragedies, which could be either based
on a common theme or unrelated, and one comedy. Unfortunately, very few
of these ancient Greek plays survive today.
The open-air, semicircular ancient Greek theater, built into the side of a
hill, looked much like a primitive version of a modern sports stadium. Some
Greek theaters, such as the Athenian theater, could seat almost seventeen
thousand spectators. Sitting in tiered seats, the audience would look down
on the orchestra, or “dancing place,” occupied by the chorus—originally
a group of men (led by an individual called the choragos) who danced and
chanted and later a group of onlookers who commented on the drama.

Raised a few steps above the orchestra was a platform on which the
actors performed. Behind this platform was a skene, or building, that origi-
nally served as a resting place or dressing room. (The modern word scene
is derived from the Greek skene.) Behind the skene was a line of pillars
called a colonnade, which was covered by a roof. Actors used the skene for
entrances and exits; beginning with the plays of Sophocles, painted back-
drops were hung there. These backdrops, however, were most likely more
decorative than realistic. Historians believe that realistic props and scenery
were probably absent from the ancient Greek theater. Instead, the setting
was suggested by the play’s dialogue, and the audience had to imagine the
physical details of a scene.

We sit in the darkened theater with many strangers. We sense an air of anticipation, an awareness of excitement. People cough, rustle about, then suddenly become still. Slowly the lights on the stage begin to come up, and we see actors moving before us, apparently unaware of our presence. They are in rooms or spaces similar to those that we may be in ourselves at the end of the evening. Eventually they begin speaking to one another much the way we might ourselves, sometimes saying things so intimate that we are uneasy. They move about the stage, conducting their lives in total disregard for us, only hinting occasionally that we might be there in the same space with them. At first we feel that despite our being in the same building with the actors, we are in a different world. Then slowly the distance between us and the actors begins to diminish until, in a good play, our participation erases the distance. We thrill with the actors, but we also suffer with them. We witness the illusion of an action that has an emotional impact for us and changes the way we think about our own lives. Great plays such as Hamlet, Othello, The Misanthrope, Death of a Salesman, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Long Day’s Journey into Night can have the power to transform our awareness of ourselves and our circumstances. It is a mystery common to much art: that the illusion of reality can affect the reality of our own lives.
Aristotle and the Elements of Drama
Drama is a collaborative art that represents events and situations, either realistic and/or symbolic, that we witness happening through the actions of actors in a play on a stage in front of a live audience. According to the greatest dramatic critic, Aristotle (384–322 BCE), the elements of drama are as follows:
1. Plot: a series of events leading to disaster for the main characters who undergo reversals in fortune and understanding but usually ending with a form of enlightenment—sometimes of the characters, sometimes of the audience, and sometimes of both
2. Character: the presentation of a person or persons whose actions and the reason for them are more or less revealed to the audience
3. Diction: the language of the drama, which should be appropriate to the action
4. Thought: the ideas that underlie the plot of the drama, expressed in terms of dialogue and soliloquy
5. Spectacle: the places of the action, the costumes, set designs, and visual elements in the play
6. Music: in Greek drama, the dialogue was sometimes sung or chanted by a chorus, and often this music was of considerable emotional importance; in modern drama, music is rarely used in serious plays, but it is of first importance in the musical theater

- 2. Not only is William Shakespeare considered to have coined generous, champion, and forward, but the Bard is also credited with accused, secure, and design.
- 3. 1. Which Othello did you watch? 2. Did you think it was a good adaptation of the play? Why? 3. How closely did this adaptation follow the original? What changes were made?
- 4. We will look at different acting styles and demonstrate how acting can bring out the potential of the words in a script. The scenes shown in the these two clips come from Shakespeare's play Othello. Desdemona's death scene contains some of Shakespeare's best writing.
- 5. In Shakespeare's time, women were not allowed to act in theaters; female roles were played by boys or young men. This changed in 1660, some 45 years after Shakespeare's death. In that year, King Charles II, who had seen women act in theaters located on the European continent, decreed that female parts could be played by women.
- 6. One of the first performances by a woman on the public stage was in the role of Desdemona in an adaptation of Othello performed late in the year 1660. This snippet is from the movie Stage Beauty and shows two different versions of Desdemona's death scene.
- 7. The first version shows the scene before women were allowed to act on the stage. Desdemona is played by a talented male actor. The second rendition is a recreation of what might have happened the first time that a woman played the part.
- 8. In written literature, characterization is presented through description, action and dialogue. In drama, characterization includes each of these elements and, in addition, the actor's skill in communication through body language, facial expressions, inflection, tone and volume. This class will explore the use of the actor's craft in describing character.
