3. 3
The tourism sector has been, for many years, one of the main vehicles for economic
growth, given that 10% of world GDP, 30% of world services exports and 1 of every
11 jobs in the world, are generated by this sector. However, despite the multiple
benefits offered by tourism in economic and development terms, this sector has long
relied on principles derived from a linear economy, a model based on the irrational
use of resources characterized by production, consumption and discard process.
At the same time, the COVID-19, affected very hardly the Tourism sector at all levels
with an international loss of 75% of lows in 2 years.
4. 4
• In this sense, Responsible Tourism is an alternative model of great relevance, since
responsibility represents a way to move towards sustainable development.
Responsible Tourism was defined in Cape Town in 2002 alongside the World Summit
on Sustainable Development and is about “making better places for people to live in
and better places for people to visit”. It seeks to contribute to the maintenance and
protection of the heritage, cultural and natural assets of the destinations,
contributing to the strengthening of the local economy through the creation of
employment and the consumption of local products.
5. 5
In this framework, the project seeks to promote responsible tourism, applying the
principles of the circular economy, conceiving it as a continuous cycle of positive
development that preserves and improves natural and human capital, optimizes the use
of resources and promotes its circular flow of regeneration and renewal. The proposal
focuses specifically on the handicraft sector, through youth initiatives, as a promotion
mechanism for the development of responsible tourism, considering that the handicraft
sector is a differentiating element that can effectively contribute to local economy
based on solid environmental and social principles, being a type of activity based on the
link between culture with ecology and society with nature and can represent an
example of how the promotion of the sustainability of the forms of production can be
integrated.
6. 6
The project, by applying the principles of the circular economy, aims at valorizing the
artisanal sector as a strategy for the development of a responsible tourism activity, in
which, especially young people, as the most dynamic and innovative part of the
community, in addition to finding concrete employment opportunities, have the
possibility of express their authenticity, creativity and innovative spirit in creation
and the implementation of youth-led initiatives aimed at promoting the local
heritage, the identity, culture and tradition of their communities, through a balanced
environmental, social and cultural approach.
8. 8
“The objective of the project is to encourage cooperation
between Europe, Latin America and Africa, promoting
youth initiatives in the field of responsible tourism,
through the implementation of circular economy principles
in the craft sector, as a strategy for sustainable
development and economic growth in vulnerable
communities”
9. 9
• To train young workers (through formal and non-formal approach) with key
competencies and practical skills that increase their employment opportunities,
promote their entrepreneurship and increase their spirit of innovation so that they
can develop initiatives aimed at the development of a responsible tourism model in
vulnerable communities;
• to organize transnational training seminars and capacity building development
events in which have the exchange of good practices, with the intention of
improving youth work in partner countries in business activities linked to alternative
forms of tourism;
10. 10
• to create new models in the field of responsible tourism, through the exchange of
good practices, which can be applied in different international contexts; to
provide the young people with alternative strategies in order to valorize the
handicraft sector as a tool of economic growth and sustainable development of
local communities;
• to support European and non-European youth workers so that they can identify
their local assets and develop initiatives aimed at their valorization, as a symbol of
identity and cultural legacy, with the aim that these represent an opportunity for
employment and economic growth in their communities;
11. 11
• to train young people in the use of new technologies as an instrument for the
promotion of their local assets and the creation of synergies between the different
actors of the tourist activity at the local level;
• to create a space (both real and virtual) for young people to put their creativity
into practice, developing innovative tourism offers based on collective
responsibility, through the creation of capacities for the design of alternative
business models and sustainable entrepreneurial solutions from the
environmental and socio-cultural point of view;
• to create collaborative networks, providing technical knowledge and assistance to
young workers to connect them with experts from the tourism sector and
companies related to it.

1. Research, Data collection and Best practices
This activity includes:
• Research on the main themes of the project which are: Circular Economy, Responsible
Tourism, Artisanal Sector and Valorization of community assets.
• Collection and analysis of data on the national contexts of the 4 participating countries,
regarding the application of the circular economy and responsible tourism at the
national level; as well as the conditions of the artisan sector and the participation of
young people in these productive activities.

to projects or initiatives implemented in the areas of circular economy, responsible
tourism and sustainable artisan practices, which can be a reference for the
development of the CYRCLE project.
• Research based on the identification and valuation of the assets of the local
community that could be promoted from the circular economy and that would help
promote responsible tourism in the localities selected for each country.

entrepreneurship and increase their spirit of
innovation in the development of initiatives
based on the application of the principles of the
circular economy in the handicraft sector as a

During the project, 3 international meetings will be held, aimed at:
a) To improve the skills of young workers in the subjects object of the project
through a face-to-face training program with the intention of improving youth
work in the participating countries.
b) Develop an innovative strategy focused on the circular economy methodology

CYRCLE MODEL
This activity plans the development of a model of
responsible tourism, based on circular economy for the
creation of tourist itineraries on sustainable crafts.
The model will be developed by all partner
organizations with the collaboration of the youth
workers involved in the project. The model will be
based on the information gathered in the initial
research and the experiences obtained in the three
international meetings.
This model will be available to members of the
community in each country and will be a reference for
the replication of the project in other geographical
areas.

5. CYRCLE platform
The platform allows to access to a network of contacts that includes stakeholders, experts in topics related to
the circular economy and responsible tourism, entrepreneurs, etc… of partner countries involved.
Through this Platform, the project also proposes the development of an ICT model to create a digital portal at
local level, in which small entrepreneurs, local guides, young users, artisans, etc., can exhibit their services,
provide information on places of interest, offer accompaniments, give recommendations and create a network
of circular collaboration between different agents.
This model platform aims to act locally to give the community the opportunity to compete against the large
digital clusters that monopolize the million-dollar profits of the tourism sector.
This platform aims to create new job opportunities among young people, starting from something basic and that
is already inserted in their communities: their cultural assets which become an instrument for the development
of a social economy and sustainable development for the entire community

All the partners will organize at the end of the
project, 1 workshop in each country in order to
exchange practice on the field of sustainable
handicraft, also aiming to produce new skills,
innovative ideas and products as well. Here the
main concept is that different techniques are
able to be mixed up and exchanged in order to
give birth at innovative handicraft, also as a
symbol of intercultural dialogue between
partners.

• non-formal learning, as well as practical collaboration, will provide young workers with key
skills and entrepreneurial skills that will enable them to find new and local strategies to
identify, value and promote the community's cultural assets;
