 Accessible Tourism (Social)
Accessible Tourism enables people with access requirements, including
mobility, vision, hearing and cognitive dimensions of access, to function
independently and with equity and dignity through the delivery of
universally designed tourism products, services and environments.
Accessible tourism is about making it easy for all people
To enjoy tourism experiences irrespective of age, gender or
physical status.
 Economic Inclusion
 Tourism should meet needs and raise standard of living for
communities that are visited.
 Responsible Tourism advocates for local employment.
 Communities and local entrepreneurs should explore supply chain
opportunities.
 Tourists should be encouraged to experience local attractions and
purchase local products (Slow Tourism)
 Communities should be encouraged and be supported to develop

 Tourism brings valuable income to countries
and communities.
 But, it can impact negatively on communities
and the environment if it is not managed
sustainably.
 The tourism industry needs to take action to
protect and sustain the communities and the
environment we depend on.
 Visitors and the tourism industry commitment is
required.

7. NDT INITIATIVES
 UA City Destination Framework and Pilot Project
The purpose was to provide the tourism sector, municipalities and all
interested groups with a blueprint guide document that can be used
towards achieving UA in Cities.
 State of UA in Provincial Game Parks/Nature Reserves
Projects seeks to support Game Parks/Nature Reserves to be Universally
Accessible.
 Social Responsibility Implementation Programme (SRI)
A job creation Expanded Public Works programme. Provides funding for
community based tourism infrastructure projects and skills development.
 Framework for Community Based Tourism
Provides guidance for development and implementation of Community
Based Tourism products.
 Madikwe Nature Reserve and Giants Castle Pilot Projects
Partnership with ILO SCORE Programme. Community participation in
Environment Conservation. Establishment of new businesses. Participation
in supply chain. Community ownership of tourism facilities.

To achieve the true potential of the tourism
industry, it must be clear that
any old tourism will not work.
A new tourism is required that would boost other
sectors of the economy and create entrepreneurial
opportunities for the previously neglected
groups; that would be kind to the environment;
that will bring peace, prosperity and enjoyment for
all South Africans.
