1.3 Levels of Measurement of Data Level Summary Example Nominal Categories only.  Data cannot be arranged into an ordering scheme. The states where students are born: 5 CA 20 TX 40 NY Categories or names only! Ordinal Categories are ordered, but differences can’t be found or are meaningless. The types of cars owned by students: 5 Compact 20 Mid-size 40 Full-Size An order is determined by “compact, mid-size, full-size.” Interval Differences are meaningful, but there is no natural zero starting point and ratios are meaningless. Campus temperatures: 5° F 20° F 40° F 0° F doesn’t mean “no heat.” 40° F is not twice as hot as 20° F. Ratio There is a natural zero starting point and ratios are meaningful. Student commuting distances: 5 mi 20 mi 40 mi 40 mi is  twice  as far as 20 miles.
1.3 Levels of Measurement  Examples Pg. 17 ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Nominal Interval. Ratios are meaningless.  (90° is not twice as hot as 45°). Ratio.  Zero tons of gas has meaning. Ordinal.  There is an order to the categories.
