Sumiah Rose plans to create a short film exploring mental health and thriller genres. She intends to keep filming simple while focusing on creative editing. Her initial ideas include a story about cyberbullying leading a character to suicide, with messages and a clock driving the plot. A second idea involves a game of tag turning dangerous. A third centers on a boy haunted by past abuse. Color schemes, blurred transitions between past and present, and subtle visual cues will convey meaning without dialogue.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
2. The genres I am interested in using to create my short film;
- Thriller
- Horror
- Comedy
- Suspense
- Drama
- Mental Health
I have chosen these genres/themes as I am interested in these themes, e.g. have seen examples that I am
inspired from or already have ideas for.
From the last project I know I am good at and enjoy editing, so I think it would be best if I kept the filming simple
and made it look better with my editing. I know that you can do a lot of cool and interesting things with the
editing and how you can make a video completely different with just the editing.
My initial reactions towards this project was to be a bit anxious and apprehensive as we had to tell a story in
60 seconds without dialogue, include a clock or watch and the statement ‘That wasn’t supposed to happen’.
However as we started to look at examples of short films within the 60 second mark I got more excited as I
started to envisage what I could create within the boundaries I was given.
I got mixed emotions when finding out this was a solo project. Firstly I was more excited because I would get to
do my idea that I wanted to, without having to compromise with someone else. I would also get to film it
where, when and with who I wanted to. Secondly I was a bit apprehensive as the whole project was down to
me, I had no one to confer with and see if I could make my ideas better. However I am glad that this is a solo
project as I have done a group project so would like to see how I work by myself to see the contrast.
3. Idea 1
Overall Idea:
She’s not eating,(why?) pushing food around the plate, looking around
blankly. Looking at herself in the mirror sees a different image to what
is really there. Lots of clips of her being depressed, getting angry at
everyone at home, isolating herself slamming the door.
Why?
- Someone close to her has died
- Getting messages from ‘people’
at her school - cyber bullying.
How to include the clock in the story?
- Can’t sleep - watching the time go by.
- Every minute another message- every tick of
the clock another beep of the phone
another bullies message.
Ending?
- Gets taken to therapy ? Sits at a desk and
leaflet is pushed across to her titled Self Help.
- She's in a bath taken pills there scattered
around the bathtub she's dead mum breaks the
lock on the bathroom door comes running in
starts crying and says ‘this wasn't supposed to
happen’.
Name of my film?
- After effects
- Consequence
- Actions have consequences.
Development of Ideas:
- Maybe use repetition to show what happens when she comes in from
school, her usual routine not eating dinner getting messages crying
arguing ending with her slamming the door, maybe shows like ¾
different times this happens all the time showing messages coming
in. Then on the 4/5 time we go into the bedroom as she gets another
message this time it says nobody wants you here you should just kill
yourself. She takes this seriously leading to the bath scene when mum
finds her body her phone is on the side still coming through with
messages saying she should kill herself. Or as the final shot the
camera pans over from where mums hugging Kiki’s lifeless body to
where the phone is, the phone is open on the messaging page with
Keisha's reply saying ‘actions have consequences’.
- Need to make less obvious about the suicide – something
like where the film gets darker- e.g. what Kiki's wearing gets
darker using inspiration from the film I made about mental
health at GCSE
- Starts off in white bright colors happy smiles and then she gets
the first text and the camera pans back up to her face and she’s
got darker eyes this continues throughout each time she gets a
text what she’s wearing gets darker her eyes get darker and her
hair gets messier.
- Maybe get her to wear a wig and then she chops her hair off in an
effort to change herself (got a text saying she’s ugly)
- Still want to keep the idea of the text on the phone at the end how?
How to include the statement ‘That wasn’t supposed to happen”
This wasn’t supposed to be girls reply to the text Kiki sent she’s panicking
saying ; ‘what do you mean this wasn’t supposed to happen wasn’t
meant to go this far it was all a joke etc.’
4. Have it where she's sat at the table all in white at the start looking into the camera smiling. She's still but everyone around her is
bustling around (like the adverts where one person is still when everyone is moving really quickly). The whole time a clock is flickering
in the background showing time going by quickly. Then texts start flickering onto the screen. And her image starts to change
flickering with those where she's darker until eventually the images of her in white are all gone. Whilst this is all going on everyone is
still bustling around her like life is normal or them doing work eating drinking etc.
The whole time she's just looking in the camera her smile getting smaller and smaller. The texts are coming quicker and the clock is
still going on in the background. This is intertwined with video clips of her cutting her hair off and heavy breathing. The clips of her sat
at the table are getting darker and she's more slouched in her seat.
Finally after everything has come to a climax her image starts flickering as well with more texts coming in e.g./ Its her dark image
flickering with the image of the empty chair. (the texts are like overpowering). Eventually the empty chair takes over and her image is
occurring like almost never. Then her image is just gone. The screen goes black and she says in a really vulnerable voice That
wasn’t supposed to happen, your actions do have consequences. If can in the credits add a few charities that people can go look at.
For the texts could use comments I’ve found on social media this would be interesting because I’d be using actual things people
have said to others. Could have this put at the end in the credits ‘All of these texts are real and were found on social media websites’
- YouTube
- Instagram
Maybe have someone else join the story to bring more a of a ‘story’ to the film. Someone coming in to ask if she’s alright and she’s
says yeh and then it switches to where its her alone and she’s going through the flickering changes and then maybe where she
comes back into ‘real life’ and she reaches out and says something like ‘actually…..’ (maybe somehow bring ‘that wasn’t supposed to
happen’- At the end where she’s disappearing she looks into the camera and says this isn’t supposed to happen and then she goes
back and reaches out for help.
Idea 1 – Further Development
5. Idea 2
Overall Idea:
Game of tag gone wrong:
- Pippin been chased by Ben through the woods
- Ben is 15 and Pippin is 8 so it looks very
threatening as Ben is so much bigger and older
than Pippin.
- Pippin then stops at the edge of the becks
bank, Ben catches him up yells tag but pushes
him as he does down Pippin falls down into
the beck.
- Needs to have a very tense atmosphere
within the video otherwise the reveal at the
end that they know each other and it wasn’t
a dangerous situation wont be such a relief to
the viewer, and the shock of what happens at
the end wont be as big.
How to make it tense?
Heavy breathing lots of suspense.
This movie will be set in the woods so the
location will add tension as this will be
filmed when it is darker so the video
would have a spooky atmosphere to it.
Perhaps showing throughout the film
flashes of what happens at the end.
How to make the fall and body at the
end look realistic?
- Use stuffed coat and trousers showing
him face down unmoving in the river. This
will look realistic to the camera without
causing Pippin actual harm.
- To make the fall look realistic roll the
camera down the hill? – This will be as if it
were taken from Pippins eyes as he was
falling. How to include the statement ‘That
wasn’t supposed to happen’?
- The screen fades to black and then pippin
comes back as a ghost and says ‘that wasn't
supposed to happen’.
- Ben saying that wasn’t supposed to happen as
he looks at his body.
How to include a clock/watch?
Maybe somehow Pippins watch falls
off as he falls down?
How to get what's happening
across to the viewer without
dialogue.
Perhaps showing throughout the film
flashes of what happens at the end.
Maybe zoom in on Bens face as he says
tag to get the word across without
speaking. Maybe name the film Tag to get
the message across even more?
6. Idea 3
Overall Idea:
Ben is put with a new family but he’s still getting flashbacks when he’s
in certain situations from when he was younger and in a bad position.
E.g. someone's knocking on his door to bring him his clean clothes but
all he can hear is flashbacks from when he was younger and his
alcoholic dad was trying to beat down the door. This blurs with the
past where he would get scared and hide so he goes to hide in his
wardrobe and it blurs between when he was younger and now.
Using inspiration from the advert where the older guy keeps changing
into a younger version of himself showing how he’s had to grow up in
a family of abuse.
The Advert:
This is an advert from the charity Barnardos.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAYLh09JxJE
Our new TV advert tells the story of Michael, a
vulnerable child who has turned his life around with
the support of Barnardo's. Thanks to us, Michael's
story didn't have to end like it began.
How to include the clock?
- Holding a clock in his hand to watch the time go by
the only thing to calm him down is counting the
numbers.
How to include the statement ‘That wasn’t
supposed to happen”?
It all stills and the door opens to his new mum and
she says ‘aye that wasn't supposed to happen’
How to blur with the past?
I have two brothers who look similar but are very different ages (8 and 15) so
this would work for the scenes where I want to have the present boy and the
past younger one. To make it look more realistic I would edit by blurring the two
clips together and by also filming some scenes where they are actually together,
this would be filmed as if it were from the perspective of the boy finding
comfort and strength in himself.
7. These are from a selection
of photos I took for a GCSE
project, however they get
the look across that I want.
They show the beginnings
of the gradual change my
character will go under
throughout the video. I
think these photos work
really well as they show
how gradual the change is
to be more depressed and
even suicidal. However
they show it in a artistic
and subtle way rather than
coming straight out with
what is actually going on.
8.
9.
10. Throughout my mood boards there is repetition in colour, images and the general tone
that the pictures set.
The colours that are seen to repeatedly show themselves are black and grey. These
help to contribute to the general mood of the board. I have chosen these images as I
think they give a sense of what my video will be like when it is finished.
A lot of the images I have chosen depict blackened out eyes, this was because I wanted
to illustrate what I wanted to show in my film with the black taking over my main
character.
I have also included a few pictures of how I want the clocks to look in my film. I wasn’t
too sure of how I wanted the clock in my film to look but looking at these pictures has
helped me to decide how I want the clock to look.
In terms of influencing my final product, some of the images were chosen because
they gave me inspiration for my own video. These particular images were very helpful
as they have given me further ideas and helped to really develop my video to the max.
