2. Research
• Strengths
• The main benefit of research was looking at previous colours and angles that the models
were at on the front cover of previous magazines. It also made me have a mind set for
what I wanted for my primary colours. With me wanting to have much more darker
colours.
• Another benefit of doing my research was the bibliographies as they were an excellent
way of going through previous magazines and looking at the articles. They we interesting
as you can see the layout of how its design and how the images are placed to show
symbolically with them adding meaning. However I think that the links that I had
researched could have been better if I had more time.
• Weaknesses
• One weakness of doing my research was that it was time consuming to research
magazines that weren't similar to the ones that I was doing. Like the Coldplay magazine
there wasn’t much too talk about as that wasn’t the type of magazine that I was going
for.
• Another weakness of doing my research was the first bibliography we did in the initial
plans as the links that we researched weren’t useful as I didn't have a good enough idea
of what I wanted for my final idea.
3. Planning
• Strengths
• The production experiment that we did was a really useful strength as it helped get
to grips with how to design a magazine on photoshop. Even doing the magazine for
my production experiment helped me think about what I was going to have in my
final idea. The picture of the faded out Murray in the joker in the double page
spread cover inspired me to do Merlin for my final design.
• Another strength of doing my planning was when I did the layout planning for how
my magazine was going to look once it had been laid out. This helped me because
at the time I knew everything that I was going to add at the time. I just didn’t know
how I was going to order it.
• Weaknesses
• A weakness in doing my planning was when I did the style sheet as I found it over
complicated when coming up with the exact colour saturations and width when
planning the style sheet.
• Another weakness when doing my planning was when I did the layout sheet. I think
this was a weakness as I had already been given the general idea of what it was I
wanted when I laid it out in my production experiment.
4. Time Management
• Strengths
• One strength of time management was when we were doing our research as I we
had been given a lot of time to do it. We put a lot into research from researching
previous magazine covers and doing our bibliographies where we put links from
where we found our previous research previous links.
• Another strength of doing time management was when we were doing layout
plans in planning as they were very quick and easy when doing. They also put me
in the right mind set of what to include on my magazine and when it should be
laided out.
• Weaknesses
• One weakness when it comes to time management I think that we should have
been given more time to do our front page and double page spread magazine on
photoshop. I think that we didn't have enough time to do it on photoshop, and
especially with people who are using InDesign.
• Another weakness when it came time management was the same problem when
we were doing our production experiments for the same reason. Also because
we had to talk about the process afterwards which didn’t really help it was just
very time consuming. I spent time talking about the process of that experiment
when it could have been used in doing my real magazine cover.
5. Technical Qualities – Front page
Similarities
• Both share the same primary colours.
• They are also very minimalistic and stylised with
them having a black and white image.
• Includes everything that connotes to it being
magazine with it having all the features. Along
with the layout also being similar with how it
looks set up.
Differences
• There’s a lot more text featured all over the magazine of
total film, with there being a lot more talked about in the
magazine.
• Gunbarrel featured in the background of the one on the
right, but mine hasn’t got any background.
• Total film features only a solo actor but mine features three
characters. With a solo actor it features all of it’s attention
to one person.
6. Technical Qualities – Double page
spreadSimilarities
• Both contain very
ominous images.
They're not in the
face of the reader
being very basic and
not standing out
loads.
• Big drops capital
letter in the centre of
the page. Even
though the one in
the bottom covers
the whole page with
the letter.
• Faded out image that
covers the whole of
the background.
However the one at
the bottom is more
noticeable and I
think that it should
have been more
faded out.
Differences
• My magazine doesn't
make the article the
main focus of the
magazine when
wanting to read it. I
wanted to include a
hint quote,
standalone fact and a
secondary image.
• Again with the bottom
magazine being more
informative with the
article. Mine focuses a
lot more on the layout
and the design of how
it looks good
aesthetically.
• The bottom magazine
is more reliant on
colour when it comes
to the image, but for
mine that’s not the
case with it being in
black and white.
7. Aesthetic Qualities – Front page
Strengths
• Keeping one colour
the same in a black
and white photo. As it
focuses on primary
colours.
• The usage of the
Kingman logo when
bullet pointing the
exclusives. As It shows
reference to the film.
• Keeping the costume
and style in sync of
being the same with
the characters of the
film.
• All the fonts and
layout is set up right.
With the Broadway
font, looking like the
most stylish font.
Weaknesses
• Title doesn’t stand out
very well with it being
very small and
cobbled at the top.
• Including the coverline
images. As it would
look better with it just
being a simple image
as the main photo.
• The main image is too
bland. I was aiming for
minimalism but there
is something needed
for the background
than just a plain black
wallpaper.
• Adding different layers
over the main image.
So the image looks
texturized.
8. Aesthetic Qualities – Double page
spreadStrengths
• Black and white
image, keeping in
line with the
continuity of the
front cover.
• Faded out image
of Merlin in the
background of the
second page. This
gives the
character a very
ominous look.
• The big drops
capital letter “G”.
As it looks very
nice when laid
out, with it
making the
beginning of the
sentence very
interesting
• Not only is it
minimalistic but
there's a focus of
primary colours
with it not feeling
overcrowded.
Weaknesses
• Main image is too
basic with it
needing the
orange colour
selected
somewhere such
as my socks or the
umbrella handle.
• Another weakness
I see with the main
image is that its
not layered
enough and like
the front cover
image feels too
basic.
• Too much white
space on the
second page.
• With the drops
capital letter. I
would have made
it bigger but I
didn’t want it to
get in the way of
the article.
9. Audience Appeal – Front page
Black and white
image that’s shows
stylish photography.
Coverline shows
films that are
also aimed at the
same target
audience
Famous modern
actors who are
admired by teens
and definitely
held a great
admiration by
film experts.
Fan of the films
is a teenager.
So its someone
who they can
relate to.
Target audience: teenagers/late adults – The reason I have picked this age group as my target audience. Is
because its centres around someone who's interested in watched watching the films who's in a similar age
group.
Actors in the films are
included in the front
page. Despite the fact
that they aren’t in the
magazine, they are
there so that people
who have seen the
films have recognisable
faces.
Logos of the Kingsman
organisation references
on the front page. This is
also good because they
are used in way that Is
needed. There not just
there, they are bullet
points.
10. Audience Appeal – Double page
spread
Target audience: teenagers/late adults
Character
from the film
shows
reference to a
major
character.
Black and
white image
that shows
reference to
the front
page.
Costume that I am wearing the
photo is similar style to Kingsman.
With the smart suit, the watch and
the umbrella being feature in it.
Quote can be considered
relatable to the reader that
also have passion for the
films.
