This document provides guidance on conducting interviews for data collection. It discusses identifying appropriate interview candidates, preparing for interviews, structuring interviews, and techniques for conducting interviews such as asking open-ended questions, encouraging storytelling, focusing on goals rather than tasks, avoiding leading questions and technological discussions, and having interviewees do show-and-tell with their personal artifacts. The document also recommends practicing interview scripts with role plays before conducting actual interviews.

SXSW - Diving Deep: Best Practices For Interviewing UsersSteve Portigal
While we know, from a very young age, how to ask questions, the skill of getting the right information from users is surprisingly complex and nuanced. This session will focus on getting past the obvious shallow information into the deeper, more subtle, yet crucial, insights. If you are going to the effort to meet with users in order to improve your designs, it's essential that you know how to get the best information and not leave insights behind. Being great in "field work" involves understanding and accepting your interviewee's world view, and being open to what they need to tell you (in addition to what you already know you want to learn). We'll focus on the importance of rapport-building and listening and look at techniques for both. We will review different types of questions, and why you need to have a range of question types. This session will explore other contextual research methods that can be built on top of interviewing in a seamless way. We'll also suggest practice exercises for improving your own interviewing skills and how to engage others in your organization successfully in the interviewing experience.

Running workshops is about being an entertainer - AJSmartAJ&Smart
Ever been to a workshop that just couldn’t hold your attention even though the content itself was interesting? Tried to moderate yourself but people just didn’t listen?
My talk at Bkk Web Meetup, Jun 10, 2014
The heart of user experience design starts from learning from your users. In order to do so, you will need to talk and listen to them. However, it is not always easy to elicit valuable insights from them due to individual differences and people's limited memory. The slides talk about psychological principles that affect how people think and verbalize their opinions, and why traditional methods, such as questionnaires and interviews, will not always work.
Light Weight Methods to Drive Your Designs ForwardNicole Capuana
Product teams these days need to be moving quickly and iteratively in delivering great products. At times though, teams can get stuck on how to move the designs forward. Sometimes it’s because of unexpected complexity and other times there are multiple paths to explore.
In this workshop, participants will experience a variety of methods that help teams gain a shared understanding through collaboration with clients, product owners, and key stakeholders. Each of the methods covered are light-weight and can be adopted by teams at any stage in the product design and development. Learn how to:
+ get started with user research,
+ define personas,
+ generate and turn ideas into solid solutions,
+ create low-fidelity mockups that can be tested with users immediately,
+ conduct a usability test,
+ synthesize your findings,
+ and gain focus for the product through games and structured discussion.
Every method covered will focus on designing a mobile app so that participants get the full experience of how each method fits into designing a product.
Don't worry if you don't have any UX background, this workshop will guide you through exercises. And if you're a UX rockstar, come flex your usability prowess with other professionals. Come learn and share tips & tricks! Everyone on a product team can benefit from this hands-on practice.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

and also exceptional ones
➝ encourage to replay a past situation (explaining
the context) in which e.g. the mobile was used to
synchronize with someone, observe and take
notes, e.g.: "
middle-aged user takes off bifocal glasses, puts
them on the table and squints at the small
buttons… tries several times to open the last
SMS, curses… mumbles… .

17. avoid leading questions
➝ Would feature X help you
➝ You like X, don t you?
➝ Do you think you d use X if it were available?
➝ ask for qualifications when people talk not about
themselves and but about others e.g. we,
everybody, nobody, some people.
