Earthquakes In Southern California
There is no shortage of earthquakes in Southern California. On any given day this area sees numerous
earthquakes, though most are barely even felt. The concern here is what will happen when another
earthquake occurs in a large dense area such as Los Angeles County, California. One question
concerns earthquake preparedness of residents in this region. Do residents know what to do in order to
prepare for an earthquake? Are residents prepared for a medium to large sized earthquake? Another
question is, how prepared are buildings when it comes to the shaking from a medium to large
earthquake? Will these buildings protect residents and employees, or do they pose a severe threat
when faced with another earthquake?

In order to map earthquake hazard zones correctly geologists found that not only should they be
mapping historic earthquake epicenters but also a detailed map of every single fault line. Not until the
deadly Long Beach earthquake of 1933 did politicians and engineers feel the need to start earthquake
proofing the structures around them (Mualchin 2011). With the passing of the Field Act school
buildings in particular were constructed with earthquake safety in mind. But the Field Act only
covered schools. It wasn t until the San Fernando earthquake of 1971 where major infrastructure and
hospitals were severely damaged that more policies were put in place to earthquake proof these
structures (Mualchin 2011). The schools which were structurally designed to withstand earthquakes
from the Field Act faired surprisingly well during this earthquake. The new policies that followed the
San Fernando earthquake required hospitals and infrastructure to be designed to withstand an
earthquake, also they required rupture hazard zones to be mapped so that development here would be

Bauhaus vs. Jonson Wax administrative building
Frank Lloyd Wright and Walter Gropius are widely regarded as the prionneering masters of modern
architecture. The Johnson Wax Building and Bauhaus as their symbolic and critical masterpieces
shared similar style of form but different idea of interpreting design. Wright s simplicity approach and
Gropius less is more idea are seemingly related, but varied by their self preference in most aspects.
Generally, since the aim of Gropius is to reconcile arts and crafts, the Bauhaus is industrial in its
aesthetics compressed with steel concrete and glass. Oppositely, Wright favors of nature by focusing
organic forms. Therefore, such diffrence of aesthetic from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Bauhaus left every structural elements exposed in rough appearance, which morally
opposed tradition by stressing what is usually hidden must be revealed . On the outside, such
difference can also be founded, Johnson Wax biulding s hermetically enclosed envelop makes it looks
like a mass but Bauhaus s visible cube circumscribed by metal frame of its outer shell creates much
more transparency to makes it like a skeleton volume. Anyway, In both closed and exposured space,
lights control is always a challenged factor.
Gropius, by adjusting the orientation of each part of building to control the daylight, the hierarchy of
which department need more daylights is created, but glazing and over heating still occur through
summer. Wright s smart move by offering light without transparency effectively avoid glazing
happens. The gap between mashroom columns provide smooth daylight transfer. Such illuminated
enclosed space raise up the efficiency of officers and convenience more significantly than Bauhaus in
terms of transparency.
Under different social structure, the layout of building is varied. Gropius spends time to reconcile the
individual and community. Bauhaus, which engages the ideas of liberty, equality and clarity, not only
collective area is protected and slightly privite, but also the tiny balconies of student residence extend
out without committing collectism. Both discipline and confrontation are well managed

Hinge Joint Research Paper
Joints are articulations where two or more bones meet (Marieb 166). Joints hold bones together and
allow for the skeleton to move (Marieb 166). The hinge joint connects the humerus, radius, and ulna.
First, the hinge joint is a synovial joint. Synovial joints are joints that, the articulating bone ends are
separated by a joint cavity containing synovial fluid (Marieb 169). The four features of synovial joints
are that the articular cartilage covers the ends of the bones, the joint surfaces are in an articular capsule
that is lined with synovial membrane, the articular capsule surrounds the joint cavity, and the capsule
is surrounded by reinforcing ligaments (Marieb 169). Additionally, synovial joints are freely movable
(Marieb 169). The hinge joint is classified as a synovial joint. In a hinge joint, the cylindrical end of
the bone fits into a trough shaped surface on another bone. Angular movement is allowed in just one
plane, like a mechanical hinge (Marieb 170). This joint is found in the elbow between the humerus,
radius, and ulna. The hinge joint s function is that it allows for movement in one axis and is classified
as uniaxial (Marieb 170). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Humerus makes up the arm and is a long bone (Marieb 160). At the distal end of the humerus is
the medial trochlea which looks somewhat like a spool, and the lateral ball like capitulum (Marieb
161). These two processes join together with the radius and ulna which are the two bones or the
forearm (Marieb 161). The ulna processes are allowed to move freely during flexion and extension of
the elbow due to the coronoid fossa and the olecranon fossa (Marieb 161). The coronoid fossa is a
depression (Marieb 161) above the trochlea anteriorly and the olecranon fossa is on the posterior
surface (Marieb 161). These two depressions allow the ulna to move when the elbow is extended and

Similarities Between Willy Loman And Death Of A Salesman
As Jean de La Fontaine once said, Beware, so long as you live, of judging men by their outward
appearance . In Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman, the protagonist, Willy Loman, constantly
struggles to make ends meet and cannot achieve success. Willy Loman is a 63 year old travelling
salesman who lives with his wife, Linda Loman, and his two sons, Happy and Biff. Willy is concerned
with wealth and success, and believes appearance is responsible for achieving both. However, this is
not true: Willy fails to acknowledge his misconception, inevitably resulting in mental collapse and
death. Likewise, in D.H. Lawrence s The Rocking Horse Winner , Lawrence suggests wealth is not the
only pathway to happiness and success through the protagonist, Paul. Paul is haunted by voices in his
house which contribute to his obsession of gambling as the voices pressure him to earn money. Paul
fails to achieve the happiness and success he wants due to his false beliefs constructed solely on
appearance in the end, he too, experiences mental turmoil and death. Therefore, both Willy and Paul
wish to achieve success, wealth and happiness, but their attempts are futile due to their materialistic
beliefs grounded on illusion. False beliefs are held by Willy Loman regarding his social status and
position as a salesman. Willy believes he is very successful as he says, America is full
of...understanding people. And they know me, boys, they know me up and down New England....I can

The Key Departments Of The Business
Overview
Businesses have numerous key departments which keep the structure running appropriately and
supports the business to build and embellish in all worldwide markets. This report will consider what
the key departments do for the business, in addition, this report will enlighten the research procedure
used and significant complications which have been encountered throughout.
Key departments within businesses
Departments in businesses all partake in important roles, departments such as human resources,
accounting and finance, production amongst others remain vital to the company so it can work
progressively. However, there are key departments which are desired more than others.
Human resources is considered key within the business, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Comparing finance and human resources is a balanced agreement, both departments consists with
doing dissimilar key functions but equally need to operate functionally so the business can endure
growth. Finance is structured to be the heart of the business, in addition, businesses are made for the
purpose of profit so it is valuable for employees to analyse existing reports. Finance touch the nervous
system of business body. Because, Share market s fluctuation, Govt. policies and strategy, Economic
changes and other changes in business environment can only analysed with the help of Finance (Prof.
Vinod Kumar,2009)
Various people would think marketing would not be key within businesses, however, businesses
require customers so that revenue can be generated and they can branch out to different countries. TV
advertisements along with commercials and posters are used by companies so customers can see what
they are offering. In addition, countless hours are put into finding target audiences and board meetings
where concepts can be formed and distinguished. Marketing has shown to be a key factor in
businesses but does not compare with the supremacy that human resources and finance embrace in the
organisation.
Production is valued exceedingly within businesses, raw materials need to be created and assembled
so that the company can then sell the product to the customer. Production will have its

True Dimensionality of Space-Time
Allan Poe states in his essay on cosmology titled Eureka, that space and duration are one. To many,
this is portrayed as the first known instance of suggesting space and time to be joined together as one
thing. Albert Einstein s 1905 theory of special relativity is the very beginning of a theory related
concept of spacetime, but the first mathematical theory of spacetime actually created by one of his
own early teachers named Hermann Minkowski. He created the concept of Minkowski Space which is
the earliest recommendation to the treatment of space and time as two separate entities of one unified
whole. The idea of Minkowski space has led up to special relativity being viewed more so in a
geometrical way rather than a scientific and mathematical way. Minkowski space is described as the
mathematical formation for which special relativity can be conveniently formulated. In this setting the
three dimensions of space are combined with one dimension of time to create a four dimensional
whole expressed together as spacetime.
It would be considered extremely important to consider the events that space and time can ultimately
affect each other and how space and time are used in cosmological research. However, before
touching base with the concept of space time, it seems appropriate to tie together the two basic types
of dimensions and how they are ultimately applied to each other. Space time is closely linked with
Albert Einstein s theory of special relativity, mathematician

Tocqueville thought that individualism could be associated with individual value, dignity, happiness,
interests and freedom. At the same time, he endowed it into relatively complete theoretical
connotations (Alexis de Tocqueville, 1988). Firstly, it emphasizes the ultimate purpose is for
individual interests. Society is just a tool that serves people. Secondly, it stresses on individual
freedom and democracy. Thirdly, it points out from personal view the rightness of privatization of
property. American historian Commager thought that individualism eventually became the synonym
of Americanism (1988). In the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English of the 1997 edition,
individualism is defined as two concepts. One is the belief that the rights and freedom of individual
people are the most important rights in a society. The other is the behavior or attitude of someone who
does things in their own way without being influenced by other people. On the contrary, individualism
is defined as pejorative connotation in The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (2005). It points out that
individualism means some people who just care about their own interests instead of collective
interests, which is not a right idea. By the analysis of the definition of individualism it s clear that the
pattern of Chinese culture stresses people s inner world and embodies in

Adam Smith Wealth Of Nations
Born on June 16, 1723 in Kirkcaldy in the United Kingdom, Adam Smith revolutionized economics
and effectively founded modern economics with the concept of free market and GDP in his magnum
opus An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, as well as his concept of the
invisible hand, which regulates supply and demand naturally in an ideal free market. He also had
progressive views of human nature and how much involvement the government should have in the
market in his book The Theory of Moral Sentiments. He followed the theme of the Enlightenment in
proposing reason and critical thinking as the most important part in judgement and was practical and
rational in his theories about the tendencies of a free market and his theories on sympathy and its
effects on human behavior. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using reasoning and logical arguments characteristic of the Enlightenment, he shows that a free
market should be able to regulate itself with minimal government involvement. He says that humanity
s own self interest leads to an economy where everyone strives to produce goods and services that
result in maximum gain for themselves, meaning that they are producing things that are most
needed/useful in society, creating a self stabilizing economy the invisible hand concept. This thesis is
evident in his famous statement: It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker
that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves not to their
humanity but to their self love, and never talk to them of our own necessities, but of their advantages.
In this quote, Adam Smith is explaining how people s desires for self gain end up supporting a
mutually beneficial free market economy where humanity s own greed leads to public

Kang s Argument Analysis
In the article, Net neutrality hits a nerve, eliciting intense reactions , Cecilia Kang discusses how the
pending repeal of Net Neutrality by the FCC and Chairman, Ajit Pai, is adamantly contested by most
of the Internet community and most companies, big or small. To develop her argument, Kang uses a
wide variety of appeals from established and startup companies, statistics and evidence related to the
reaction to the repeal, and demonstrations on how polarizing the issue is, and the repeal s effect on
solving the problem of Internet regulation. Kang cites a multitude of Internet based companies or
organizations, such as Mozilla, Google, Netflix, and Free Press, to demonstrate their concern and
clarify their resentment of the repeal. For instance, Google and Netflix argued that telecom companies
should not be able to split sites because that would allow them to become a sort of gatekeeper. These
responses better clarify companies concerns about the repeal and its effect on their business, while
also aiding Kang in developing her article on explaining the concern and the response it has elicited.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Presidentialism

framework, i.e. Presidentialism or Parliamentarism, would serve better in bringing political stability to
these new democracies. While there s no doubt in my mind that Parliamentarism would be a better
choice for them, I believe that it needs to be operated under several necessary conditions. I will

It is because under Presidentialism, a candidate may win the poll even if only a minority of voters pick
them as their ideal choice (Canello, 2012). That is even more likely in the new democracies in
developing countries, where there tends to have numerous major candidates in the election due to the
existence of multi party and lack of coordination between parties with similar background and
ideologies, unlike the U.S., that has a two party system with two well organized parties including the
Democrats and the Republicans, that are the political affiliations of nearly all the Americans. For
example, the first Egypt president Mohamed Morsi only won less than a one fourth of the votes in the

Summary Of Misa And Toyofumi s Life
A case in point is the story of Misa Watanabe and her deceased childhood Toyofumi Yoshizawa. Misa
and Toyofumi were my mother s students when she was working in Japan as an ESL teacher. Both
Misa, a white Japanese Amerasian, and Toyofumi, black Japanese Amerasian, never knew their
American fathers. Eventually, Misa was adopted by a Japanese couple from Tokyo when she was 10,
however, Toyofumi remained in a shelter for the Amerasians in Okinawa and lived there until his last
days. In the interview I conducted with Misa, now a print ad model in Tokyo, I was told that the image
of the Amerasians (especially those who have Caucasian features) in the Entertainment industry is

Why Might Different Pressure Groups Use Different Methods...
Why might different pressure groups use different methods in their methods in their attempts to
influence government .
Pressure groups are groups of like minded individuals who come together on the basis of shared
interests or a commonly held cause in order to put pressure on policy makers at Westminster and
beyond. Pressure groups are significantly more numerous than political parties because whereas the
parties tend to aggregate and accommodate a wide range of views in an effort to see their candidate
elected to public off, pressure groups have a tendency to fragment opinion. Recent years have seen the
emergence of looser social movements and more focused single issue groups, replacing larger, more
traditional groups as a fundamental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It starts from the premise that conventional methods of influencing policy are flawed and that more
visible and direct protests, perhaps even involving civil disobedience, illegal methods or violence,
may offer the best opportunity of success because they attract media attention, raise public awareness
and force politicians to sit up and listen.
Although many feel that direction action techniques provide the most immediate way of articulating
their views and achieving tangible results, critics argue that the rise in single issue, direct action
politics undermines our system of representative democracy. This is because such campaigns prevent
governments from implementing their programmes and from pursuing policies that address the bigger
picture.
The scope and scale of direct action campaigns has increased significantly since the 1990s. The anti
roads protests of recent years, the campaign against live animal exports, the campaigns against fox
hunting and vivisection, the fuel protests and the campaigns by groups such as Fathers4Justice and
environmental groups such as Greenpeace and Plane Stupid have al been seen to have had some effect
on policy or opinion.
Precisely how effective individual pressure groups are is often hard to gauge not least because many
core insider groups prefer not to publicise the extent of their influence, for fear of alienating the
government and losing their privileged status. Similarly, while high profile

What It s Like To Be A Gang Member, By Bill Lee And We...
In both What It s Like to be a Gang Member, by Bill Lee and We Real Cool, by Gwendolyn Brooks,
gang life is portrayed as dangerous and violent, demonstrating that gang members have to find a way

required to be in a gang, along with the challenges the members face, such as peer pressure.
In the article What It s Like to be a Gang Member, by Bill Lee, gang activity is described in detail, and
the struggles of membership are shown clearly. For example, ...when your buddies are jumping

some gang members would do atrocious things just to fit in, not because they actually wanted to do it.

Human beings strived for a better life since the beginning. Mankind witnessed a never ending race for
happiness, wealth, power and superiority. Many revolutions changed the course of history and became

ideas were short lived. American Dream was one of such ideas which laid the foundation for the

The pastoral was initially originated by the Greek poet Theocritus and the Latin poet Virgil, who wrote
poems about the shepherds ( pastor is Latin for shepherd ). In Shostak s book Philip Roth: American
Pastoral, The Human Stain, The Plot Against America, the traditional pastoral is described as: a
deliberate conventional poem expressing an urban poet s nostalgic image of the peace and simplicity
of the life of the shepherds and other rural folk in idealized natural settings (qtd. in. Shostak 34). In
American Pastoral, Roth presents the story of Levovs, an American family, who in search of the
American dream, gain wealth and success, but suffers from heartache and pain due to the adverse
situations. In a way, it is similar to the story of Job in the Holy Bible, in which Job s life moves from
one phase to another, from poverty to riches, and then back to the former. The novel consciously
alludes to Milton s epic poem Paradise Lost, both thematically and formally, with the Jewish post war
acquisition and loss of an American

Mrs Warren s Profession And The Ruined Maid
Being female has a long history of being considered lesser than the male counterpart, the same is true
for female sexuality. While modern times have come to accept female sexuality in all its forms, past
literature often dealt with it through the act of prostitution. Both George Bernard Shaw s Mrs. Warren
s Profession and Thomas Hardy s The Ruined Maid deal with the representation of female sexuality
through prostitution and brothels. This is portrayed as empowering for the women involved despite
societal conditions forcing this role, yet deals with the reaction from society very differently. Both
texts also deal with the social stigma that surrounds prostitution and the utilization of female sexuality
in different way while both having the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Mrs. Warren s Profession, the concept of women viewing prostitution and brothels as the only
means for upward social mobility or even just survival is not shied away from. In a preface from the
play in 1902, Shaw himself is quoted as saying No normal woman would be a professional prostitute
if she could better herself by being respectable . This also ties into the reason that Mrs. Warren is not
portrayed as helpless or a victim for being a prostitute/ part of the brothel, rather having the blame
placed on the societal and economic conditions that led to her choosing this occupation (Liggins 50).
This also ties back to Shaw s intention of throwing the responsibility and guilt of Mrs. Warren s
choices back on the British public themselves rather than on the individual. This sentiment is also felt
in The Ruined Maid , as it proposes that the only reason for Melia s current place in society is due to
her being ruined, as prior she was poor and uneducated on the farm (Hardy 5 11). The text alludes that
her pre marital fornication allowed her upward mobility, and it may have been the only way to achieve
it. Through being ruined, Melia has improved herself both socially and intellectually (Renner 25).
Another comparison between the two texts is the acceptance of other female characters that the
decision made good financial sense to join the

My Life Reflection Paper
Literature and writing have had an affect on my life starting from my early childhood and continues to
influence me as I end my 11th year of school. From children s pop up books to 500 page novels
reading has always taken part in developing my life. From learning to write my name to using
vigorous research and planning to construct a 7 page paper over the Scarlet Letter and the unfortunate
events little Hester Prynne is forced to deal with, along with the thrilling task analyzing two
juxtaposed literary works. Throughout my life writing and literature have helped to guide me in life
and aides in my everyday life. In grades kindergarten through seventh I attended school at Piqua
Catholic and more times than not was unsatisfactory in my writing and literature skills. I always
seemed to be the kid that fell behind when reading a book or was constantly spelling words
incorrectly. It was not that I did not care or never did my work, I tried but nothing ever clicked for me.
Tutoring was brought up in chat among my parents but they hoped that it would click eventually. My
mother acted as my own personal tutor at times. In preparation for spelling tests we would take a
cookie sheet and cover it in shaving cream. After my mom gave me a word I would spell it out in the
shaving cream. This helped me to visualize the words while incorporating some fun into studying.
First grade was nightmare for me, My teacher, Mrs. Quarter had suggested to my parents that I be held
back because I was so far behind compared to the other children in my class. At times we would read
together in class, taking turns by going around the room. It was embarrassing when the book came to
me and every other word I would stumble and need help with pronunciation. Although Mrs. Quarter
suggested I be held back a year that was not what she wanted. At times she would stay after school
with me to practice reading with me which greatly benefited me. With Mrs. Quarters help my reading
and writing greatly improved and by the end of my second grade year I was on honor roll. As I grew
older and transferred to Troy City Schools I felt that my classes had gotten easier, especially English. I
excelled in English, I will credit my English teacher Mrs.

Social Stigma And Self Stigma Of Mental Illness
This paper will be discussing the topic that has been selected for the upcoming integrative project.
This topic is the social stigma that is behind seeking mental help among individuals in North America.
Stigmatization can have a severe effect on the likelihood that an individual will seek services. The
topic was selected due to an interest as to how public stigma and self stigma may play a role or how
they may interfere with one s decision making of seeking mental health services. Even though the
consequences of not seeking the counselling may be severe. It is important to understand the reasons
why people do not seek the help they need and how stigma plays a role, so a solution can be made to
change it.
This paper will explore how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A close examination shows that gender also has a contribution on the willingness to seek
psychological help. In conclusion, the paper will be developing, as well as putting together, the ideas
and conclusions of the several scholars that have scholarly work done on my topic to have a complete
image of how public stigma and self stigma of mental illness hinders the willingness to seek
professional help. Going about the research by exploring into two social disciplines. The ideas that
will be put together are the ideas that both types of stigmas, public and self stigma, are connected to
attitudes and intentions to seeking necessary counselling.
BACKGROUND SECTION (1 PAGE)
Looking at the background of sociology, we know that sociology is the study of human society
(Macionis, 2004:4). In sociology there is a point of view that is called sociological perspective,
explains to the readers that sociologists look for general patterns in the behaviour of particular people.
It looks at how society shapes our lives, little do we realize, shapes our way of thinking and our
actions. Even very personal decisions that we make are shaped by society (Macionis, 2004:4 5).
Knowing this about sociology helps us understand how society plays a huge role in how we shape our
lives, especially the decisions that we make, which in the case of someone wanting to seek
psychological help, a

The Conflict Between Christian Faith And Those Of Islamic...
As a global collective, the human past is purely one of conflict. Power struggles are widespread and
unique in context, but these struggles are not special in the presence or complexity of the self versus
other conflict within them. One of the strongest examples for this assertion is the First Crusades. At
face value, any observer can immediately take notice of the separation between those of Christian
faith and those of Islamic faith. If additional diligence in research is provided, any one of these
observers begins to find the endlessly deeper self versus other struggles present on both sides,
specifically amongst the Christian military. Numerous accounts from Christian actors serve to support
this argument; the recorded thoughts of both soldiers and intellectuals detail the surprising amount of
divisions between what should be the Christian united. The relationship between the self and the other
present in the mindset of the actors of the Crusades shows that a definite, dynamic, yet necessary
division between all groups of people exists, no matter the already established bonds of any collective.
One of the most complicated pieces to the self versus other puzzle is the dynamic nature of its
idealistic segregation. Each person involved with the First Crusade had an undeniable loyalty to God.
In an effort seemingly meant to cultivate more glory, some saw it fitting to sacrifice established
intercommunity bonds for the sake of peer provided glory. The glory promised by Pope

Disadvantages Of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence Introduction Artificial intelligence is the study and development of enabling
computer and machine technology to learn, simulate intelligence, use logic, and perform tasks that are
typically performed by humans. Artificial intelligence is an area of research that has been prone to
controversy. Researchers are conflicted in regards to whether artificial intelligence is beneficial. Some
believe that it will help solve many societal issues, others fear that it will cause further problems.
Although technological advances bring many benefits, some members of society question what the
major impacts will be long term. Brief History of AI The history of artificial intelligence (AI), begins

Along with the unveiling of the mechanical man, Westinghouse Electric also introduced his
companion Sparko, a mechanical dog.3 The emergence of multiple new inventions in the 20th century
gave way to many new terminologies. In 1943, Arturo Rosenblueth, Norbert Wiener, and Julian
Bigelow coined the term cybernetics, and by 1948 Norbert Wiener published a popular book with the
same name. By 1950, the inquiries about AI brought about the publishing of Computing Machinery
and Intelligence, by A.M. Turing. In Turing s seminal paper, Turing raises the question of the AI s
ability to think and make decisions as an intelligent human would. This paper would lead to a standard
testing called the Turing Test, which would be used by many researchers of artificial intelligence. Less
than a decade later, the term artificial intelligence would be coined in 1956 by John McCarthy at the
Dartmouth Conference, which was exclusively devoted to AI discoveries.4 During the time between
the early 1970s and late 1980s there were many inventions that contradicted and confirmed beliefs
about artificial intelligence. These inventions ranged from a more advanced chess playing computer
used to train chess players, to natural language programs. One noted milestone in AI history is the
accomplishment of ALVINN (an Autonomous Land Vehicle in a Neural Network), which drove 2800
miles in 1989. After the success of ALVINN, the advances in AI

Battle of Marathon This essay talks about the great...
In 490 B.C.E. the Battle of Marathon was a brief but important event in the war between the Greek
city states and The Persian Empire. The results of the battle had unforeseen effects on Athens and the
future of Western Civilization. The Greek Golden Age , centred in Athens, brought about new forms of
art, the foundations of future philosophy and redirected literature and drama. The achievements of the
Athenians during this period were directly connected to the inspiration and prestige (which later
translated into power) fuelled by the events at Marathon. How the events of a single day changed the
entire course of Western Civilization is hard to fathom but obvious when one looks at the aftermath of
that fateful event.
The revolts of a few ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The victory at Marathon and the successful defence of the city, gave the Athenians a sense of moral
superiority and pride. In later battles of the Persian War, at Thermopylai and Salamis, the highly
regarded Spartans and those of the Peloponnese were largely in control of strategic moves. Although
still a major force in every battle, Athens and her allies were outnumbered and thus followed Spartan
command. After the second occupation of Athens after the battle of Salamis, the Athenians gave
Sparta an ultimatum due to a lack of Spartan support. If the Peloponnesians wanted Athens navy, they
must save Athens land. Because the Athenians had more damage to recover from it brought stronger
confidence and overall pride for them once the city got back on its feet. The Spartans, Corinthians and
other Peloponnesian allies now had reason to fear Athens growing naval power and its capabilities
now that the city was repaired and invigorated with a renewed sense of pride. This is the point that we
see the beginnings of a shift in the balance of power and influence between the city states. When the
Ionian states adopted the Athenians as leaders, as opposed to the Spartans who had been pre eminent
for a long time, the rise of the Athenian influence began to show. For the purpose of protecting all
Greeks from a further Persian attack, a league was formed, of which Athens was now the leader. The
league included

The Black Lace Fan My Mother Gave Me
Practice Commentary: The Black Lace Fan My Mother Gave Me Eavan Bolland s The Black Lace
Fan my Mother Gave me from her book, Outside History (1990) gives readers the first impression that
the poem is about the value of a fan that has been passed down to her. However, based on the title, the
term black lace raises a sense of mystery and darkness as black lace is not completely see through,
there are spots that need to be filled in. To illustrate the value of the black lace fan, the speaker, who is
unknown, narrates on how the mother received it and also used very vivid descriptions on its
significance. To add to the sense of mystery suggested by the title, the use of him and her instead of
actual names enhances this quality of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The shortness of the sentence, She stood up acts as a sudden pause in the story, as though this abrupt
action has frozen time. In the next few lines, Bolland uses a miserable tone to reflect on the mother s
mood. To emphasize this sense of misery, she uses the three rhyming words, emptying , killing and
lighting , which have the connotations of bitterness and depression. Bolland also uses pathetic fallacy
to reflect on the emotions of the mother, stating that the distance smelled of rain and lightning. The
distance that is mentioned here may symbolize how distant she and her lover is now. At this point, the
readers would feel a sense of pathos towards this character. Hence, the third stanza is a transitioning
phase between her presence of the current situation and her stream of consciousness. As mentioned
before, the mother loses touch with the real world and is engaged in the beauty and delicacy of the
black lace fan. Bolland s use of visual imagery is impressive, as the readers get to have a clear picture
of the texture and details of the fan. The lines that read These are wild roses, appliqued on silk by
hand, Darkly picked, stitched boldly, quickly. make the description of the fan sound much more
interesting as Bolland has used

even outside of the group. Task functions are a lot more important to her than process functions
although she is not a mean character her main priority is that the work in the group gets done correctly
and on time. Since she is focused more on tasks she does not think that anything that would strengthen
moral such as gate keeping a conversation is important. She is much more likely to be seen as an
authoritarian leader. Some in the group such as Rachel are no always comfortable telling her their
views. The climate in the group leans more defensive than supportive. When Monica wanted to find

opinion. 5.) There are two different types of climate a group could have the first one is

Harshness Of Life In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
On February 27, 1902, in Salinas County, California, an American Novelist named John Steinbeck
was born. He had an early appreciation for the land, in particular, California s Salinas Valley, which
would be a big impact on his writing later on. Steinbeck s life is very similar to the book he would
write, Of Mice and Men, which takes place in his hometown Salinas, and also has the same theme of
Steinbeck s life. Steinbeck experienced harshness in his life, drifting out of schools for six years until
he dropped out for good. There are many themes found in the novel Of Mice and Men by John
Steinbeck, but the most significant theme is the harshness of life, which frequently appears and
develops throughout the novel.
The harshness of life theme is shown right at the start of the book with two examples. The first
example appears on page five when Lennie tries to cover up killing a mouse to George. George sees
that Lennie is holding something and when he asks what it is, Lennie says Jus a dead mouse, George. I
didn t kill it. Honest! I found it. I found it dead (5). This proves the harshness of life because Lennie
could not control what he wanted. And in life, in order to succeed and live a good life, you are going
to have to be able to control what you want. Another example of the harshness of life occurs when
Lennie was talking about him petting the mice and how it s not under his control to stop it. He says I d
pet em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead
(10). This is a great example of the harshness of life because it shows killing. Lennie kills the fluffy
animal, but he did not want to. Steinbeck shows with these two examples that harshness of life doesn t
have to include only human beings, it also can be animals.
The reason why George and Lennie travel together is in fact because of the harshness of life. When
George is talking to Slim about Lennie and how they are together now, he says, I turns to Lennie and
says, Jump in. An he jumps. Couldn t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him
(40). George was being a jerk to Lennie and ended up having to save his life. This is a big harshness
of life because George was a jerk to

The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 criminalized marijuana by restricting possession of the drug to
individuals who paid an excise tax for certain approved medical and industrial uses. Penalty for

prohibition. Prohibition ended in 1933 and Anslinger felt he needed a new illegal substance for job
security. Hearst owned a newspaper empire. Hemp had become a cheap substitute for paper pulp
which is used in the newspaper industry. Hearst felt hemp was a threat to his extensive timber holding
from which paper pulp was also made. Hearst started a scare campaign to convince the public that

The concern here is what will happen when another earthquake occurs in a large dense area such as Los Angeles County, California. One question concerns earthquake preparedness of residents in this region. Do residents know what to do in order to prepare for an earthquake? • 8. True Dimensionality of Space-Time Allan Poe states in his essay on cosmology titled Eureka, that space and duration are one. To many, this is portrayed as the first known instance of suggesting space and time to be joined together as one thing. Albert Einstein s 1905 theory of special relativity is the very beginning of a theory related concept of spacetime, but the first mathematical theory of spacetime actually created by one of his own early teachers named Hermann Minkowski. He created the concept of Minkowski Space which is the earliest recommendation to the treatment of space and time as two separate entities of one unified whole. The idea of Minkowski space has led up to special relativity being viewed more so in a geometrical way rather than a scientific and mathematical way. Minkowski space is described as the mathematical formation for which special relativity can be conveniently formulated. In this setting the three dimensions of space are combined with one dimension of time to create a four dimensional whole expressed together as spacetime. It would be considered extremely important to consider the events that space and time can ultimately affect each other and how space and time are used in cosmological research. However, before touching base with the concept of space time, it seems appropriate to tie together the two basic types of dimensions and how they are ultimately applied to each other. Space time is closely linked with Albert Einstein s theory of special relativity, mathematician ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At the same time, he endowed it into relatively complete theoretical connotations (Alexis de Tocqueville, 1988). Firstly, it emphasizes the ultimate purpose is for individual interests. Society is just a tool that serves people. Secondly, it stresses on individual freedom and democracy. Thirdly, it points out from personal view the rightness of privatization of property. American historian Commager thought that individualism eventually became the synonym of Americanism (1988). In the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English of the 1997 edition, individualism is defined as two concepts. One is the belief that the rights and freedom of individual people are the most important rights in a society. The other is the behavior or attitude of someone who does things in their own way without being influenced by other people. On the contrary, individualism is defined as pejorative connotation in The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (2005). It points out that individualism means some people who just care about their own interests instead of collective interests, which is not a right idea. Although many feel that direction action techniques provide the most immediate way of articulating their views and achieving tangible results, critics argue that the rise in single issue, direct action politics undermines our system of representative democracy. This is because such campaigns prevent governments from implementing their programmes and from pursuing policies that address the bigger picture. The scope and scale of direct action campaigns has increased significantly since the 1990s. This also ties into the reason that Mrs. Warren is not portrayed as helpless or a victim for being a prostitute/ part of the brothel, rather having the blame placed on the societal and economic conditions that led to her choosing this occupation (Liggins 50). Power struggles are widespread and unique in context, but these struggles are not special in the presence or complexity of the self versus other conflict within them. One of the strongest examples for this assertion is the First Crusades. At face value, any observer can immediately take notice of the separation between those of Christian faith and those of Islamic faith. If additional diligence in research is provided, any one of these observers begins to find the endlessly deeper self versus other struggles present on both sides, specifically amongst the Christian military. Numerous accounts from Christian actors serve to support this argument; the recorded thoughts of both soldiers and intellectuals detail the surprising amount of divisions between what should be the Christian united. The relationship between the self and the other present in the mindset of the actors of the Crusades shows that a definite, dynamic, yet necessary division between all groups of people exists, no matter the already established bonds of any collective. One of the most complicated pieces to the self versus other puzzle is the dynamic nature of its idealistic segregation. Each person involved with the First Crusade had an undeniable loyalty to God. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The victory at Marathon and the successful defence of the city, gave the Athenians a sense of moral superiority and pride. In later battles of the Persian War, at Thermopylai and Salamis, the highly regarded Spartans and those of the Peloponnese were largely in control of strategic moves. Although still a major force in every battle, Athens and her allies were outnumbered and thus followed Spartan command. After the second occupation of Athens after the battle of Salamis, the Athenians gave Sparta an ultimatum due to a lack of Spartan support. If the Peloponnesians wanted Athens navy, they must save Athens land. Because the Athenians had more damage to recover from it brought stronger confidence and overall pride for them once the city got back on its feet. The Spartans, Corinthians and other Peloponnesian allies now had reason to fear Athens growing naval power and its capabilities now that the city was repaired and invigorated with a renewed sense of pride. This is the point that we see the beginnings of a shift in the balance of power and influence between the city states. When the Ionian states adopted the Athenians as leaders, as opposed to the Spartans who had been pre eminent for a long time, the rise of the Athenian influence began to show. For the purpose of protecting all Greeks from a further Persian attack, a league was formed, of which Athens was now the leader. The league included ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Black Lace Fan My Mother Gave Me Practice Commentary: The Black Lace Fan My Mother Gave Me Eavan Bolland s The Black Lace Fan my Mother Gave me from her book, Outside History (1990) gives readers the first impression that the poem is about the value of a fan that has been passed down to her. However, based on the title, the term black lace raises a sense of mystery and darkness as black lace is not completely see through, there are spots that need to be filled in. To illustrate the value of the black lace fan, the speaker, who is unknown, narrates on how the mother received it and also used very vivid descriptions on its significance. To add to the sense of mystery suggested by the title, the use of him and her instead of actual names enhances this quality of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The shortness of the sentence, She stood up acts as a sudden pause in the story, as though this abrupt action has frozen time. In the next few lines, Bolland uses a miserable tone to reflect on the mother s mood. To emphasize this sense of misery, she uses the three rhyming words, emptying , killing and lighting , which have the connotations of bitterness and depression. Bolland also uses pathetic fallacy to reflect on the emotions of the mother, stating that the distance smelled of rain and lightning. The distance that is mentioned here may symbolize how distant she and her lover is now. At this point, the readers would feel a sense of pathos towards this character. Hence, the third stanza is a transitioning phase between her presence of the current situation and her stream of consciousness. As mentioned before, the mother loses touch with the real world and is engaged in the beauty and delicacy of the black lace fan. Bolland s use of visual imagery is impressive, as the readers get to have a clear picture of the texture and details of the fan. The lines that read These are wild roses, appliqued on silk by hand, Darkly picked, stitched boldly, quickly. make the description of the fan sound much more interesting as Bolland has used ... Also Monica goes into more detail describing what exactly was purchased such as tap dance classes. Another character Rachel serves as the critic of the group, much of the communication revolves around the two of them. The character is very organized, in her free time even apart from the group she enjoys having her apartment and restaurant she works at organized. These are examples of the way her leadership skills function that she uses even outside of the group. Task functions are a lot more important to her than process functions although she is not a mean character her main priority is that the work in the group gets done correctly and on time. Since she is focused more on tasks she does not think that anything that would strengthen moral such as gate keeping a conversation is important. She is much more likely to be seen as an authoritarian leader. Some in the group such as Rachel are no always comfortable telling her their views. The climate in the group leans more defensive than supportive. When Monica wanted to find out more about her thief Rachel urged her not to pursue it however she quickly dismissed Rachel s opinion. 5.) • 32. Harshness Of Life In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men On February 27, 1902, in Salinas County, California, an American Novelist named John Steinbeck was born. He had an early appreciation for the land, in particular, California s Salinas Valley, which would be a big impact on his writing later on. Steinbeck s life is very similar to the book he would write, Of Mice and Men, which takes place in his hometown Salinas, and also has the same theme of Steinbeck s life. Steinbeck experienced harshness in his life, drifting out of schools for six years until he dropped out for good. There are many themes found in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, but the most significant theme is the harshness of life, which frequently appears and develops throughout the novel. The harshness of life theme is shown right at the start of the book with two examples. The first example appears on page five when Lennie tries to cover up killing a mouse to George. George sees that Lennie is holding something and when he asks what it is, Lennie says Jus a dead mouse, George. I didn t kill it. Honest! I found it. I found it dead (5). This proves the harshness of life because Lennie could not control what he wanted. And in life, in order to succeed and live a good life, you are going to have to be able to control what you want. Another example of the harshness of life occurs when Lennie was talking about him petting the mice and how it s not under his control to stop it. He says I d pet em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead (10). This is a great example of the harshness of life because it shows killing. Lennie kills the fluffy animal, but he did not want to. Steinbeck shows with these two examples that harshness of life doesn t have to include only human beings, it also can be animals. The reason why George and Lennie travel together is in fact because of the harshness of life. When George is talking to Slim about Lennie and how they are together now, he says, I turns to Lennie and says, Jump in. An he jumps. Couldn t swim a stroke. He damn near drowned before we could get him (40). George was being a jerk to Lennie and ended up having to save his life. This is a big harshness of life because George was a jerk to ... The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 criminalized marijuana by restricting possession of the drug to individuals who paid an excise tax for certain approved medical and industrial uses. Penalty for nonpayment of this tax was up to $2000 and/or jail time up to five years.
