Why need a classification?
Requirements of classification
system
• Immediate visualization of the type of partially
edentulous arch that is being considered
• Immediate differentiation between tooth supported and
tooth & tissue supported removable partial denture
• Universally acceptable
CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS
• Kennedy
• Cummer
• Bailyn
• Beckett
• Godfrey
• Swenson
• Miller
• Skinner
• Applegate
KENNEDY CLASSIFICATION
• CLASS I
Bilateral edentulous areas location
posterior to the natural teeth
CLASS I
KENNEDY CLASSIFICATION
• CLASS II
Unilateral edentulous area located
posterior to the remaining natural teeth
CLASS II
KENNEDY CLASSIFICATION
• CLASS III
Unilateral edentulous area with natural
teeth remaining both anterior and posterior to it
CLASS III
KENNEDY CLASSIFICATION
• CLASS IV
Single but bilateral (crossing the
midline), edentulous area located anterior to
the remaining natural teeth
CLASS IV
CLASSIFICATION?
APPLEGATE RULES
• Rule 1
Classification should follow rather than
precede any extractions of teeth that might altar
the original classification
• Rule 2
If a 3rd molar is missing and is not to be
replaced, it is not considered in the classification
APPLEGATE RULES
• Rule 3
If a third molar is present
and is to be used as an abutment,
it is considered in the classification
• Rule 4
If a 2nd molar is missing and
is not to be replaced, it is not
considered in the classification
APPLEGATE RULES
• Rule 5
the most posterior
edentulous area (or areas)
always determine the
classification
APPLEGATE RULES
• Rule 6
Edentulous areas other
than those that determine
the classification are referred
to as modifications and are
designated by their number
APPLEGATE RULES
• Rule 7
The extent of the medication is not
considered, only the number of additional
edentulous areas
APPLEGATE RULES
APPLEGATE RULES
• Rule 8
No modification areas
can be included in Class IV
arches
ADVANTAGES
• It permits immediate visualization of the
partially edentulous arches
• Allows easy distinction between tooth
supported versus tooth and tissue supported
prosthesis
• It permits logical approach towards designing
of the prosthesis
• It is universally accepted
