Birth Control Effects
Effects of Birth Control 11 million women are currently taking birth control orally in the U.S. Studies
have shown that 99% of the time birth control helps by preventing any type of unwanted pregnancies.
Although, many are unaware of the mental and physical health effects that birth control could have on
them.
How Birth Control Works During the beginning of each menstrual cycle, the estrogen levels in the
women s body starts to increase. Estrogen is hormone ,where once released into the female body it
begins to thicken the lining of the uterus in preparation of fertilizing an egg. When the estrogen levels
higher even more, the ovaries release an egg. This process is well known as ovulation. After this, the
progesterone levels rise. Progesterone is a hormone that thickens the lining of the uterus to prepare for
the fertilizing of the egg. During this process, the egg is traveling through the fallopian tubes, trying to
get to the uterus. When the egg is fully fertilized and it implants itself within the uterus the pregnancy
process begins. If the egg doesn t successfully fertilize or it doesn t attach itself accurately to the
uterus, then, there is no chance of pregnancy. As a result, the estrogen and progesterone hormone
levels start to decrease and the thickened uterus lining starts to shed. Birth control is a synthetic type
of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Birth control works because it prevents the whole
ovulation process. With

The Current Methods Used For Extra Terrestrial Intelligence
DISCUSS THE CURRENT METHODS USED TO SEARCH FOR EXTRA TERRESTRIAL
INTELLIGENCE, SUCH AS RADIOTELESCOPES AND SPACE PROBES. GIVE YOUR
OPINION ON HOW LIKELY IT IS THAT LIFE WILL BE DISCOVERED AND GIVE EVIDENCE
TO SUPPORT YOUR ANSWER.
WHAT IS EXTRA TELESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE?
Extra terrestrial Intelligence can be abbreviated to ETI, which asks the question; Are we alone in this
universe? ETI is life discovered beyond Earth, not organisms that humans sent to space. Scientifically,
extra terrestrial life may be titled; xenobiology, exobiology or astrobiology.

This allows communication satellites to remain in the same position in relation to the ground.
Inclined orbit: An inclined satellite passes over a different part of the planet each orbit.
Polar orbit: A polar orbit passes over the north and south poles each orbit crossing various places in
the equator each orbit.
Elliptical orbit: An elliptical orbit has no specific speed or distance, it depends on the apogee (furthest
distance away) and perigee (closest to the surface).
The first artificial satellite was Sputnik 1, and satellites have continued to be launched since 1957.
Sputnik 1 was a small aluminium ball with four antennas attached, although modern ETI s have more
complex bodies they are still designed following the same basic structure. With experimentation, these
bodies have been designed to be as strong and light as possible with the same essential uses. There is a
platform named a bus inside satellites which has; antennas, solar arrays and payload instruments
attached. It also contains batteries, computers and thrusters. Satellites have large panels attached as
they have to charge themselves, these arrays can be tilted to allow for the most amount of sunlight
possible. If the satellite drifts into shade rechargeable batteries become the new power source.

Decaying Gratification
Aristotle once formed a compelling viewpoint, stating in his discussion on self mastery that many
individuals choose to have a weakness of will. In other words, they know what is best for them, but
still choose to do something else. In an experiment done by Walter Michel, many of the individuals in
the experiment have proven to make a rational decision to not do something that their basic instincts
were pushing them to do. Aristotle s engrossing point of view has shown that willpower can be
achieved, and make the impossible things possible. Based on my own experience, I had not thought
about delaying gratification or self control. Typically, I try to make decisions to act in ways that will
benefit me, although sometimes I slip into a moment of weakness. When the Oreo was placed on my
desk, my basic instinct was that I was hungry. Even though I knew that I could receive another Oreo,
if I waited until the end of class to eat it, I had slipped into a instant of frailty and eventually, just
succumbed to it. I have found that this sense of self control has been an issue with me throughout
school, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If I had a time machine, the first thing that I might choose to do is go back to a certain point of time,
and undo a decision I made back then. Yet, the result of making bad decisions was suffering through
certain troubles that were because of unfortunate choices. In order to have a life without any regrets, I
have found that practical wisdom is very important. I have learned to live with my past choices, and
even find something good in them. A skill that my parents implemented in me early in my life was that
I had the right to feel any emotion that I wanted, and do what genuinely makes me happy. My personal
goal everyday is to restructure my own intentions, so that I make decisions quickly, when it comes to

The Protests Of The United States
In the past five years (2010 present), there has been an increasing number of street protests around the
globe. From the Arab Spring, in 2010 2012, to the protests that are more recent like Ferguson, Mexico
and Venezuela in 2014. Just in the past five years, individuals worldwide orchestrated over 20
demonstrations, and used social media platforms, principally as Facebook or Twitter, to organize
protests. The participants in these demonstrations are typically 18 35 year old individuals, demanding
democratization, transparency, and/ or political representation. The settings of the protests are in large
cities, universities, town squares, and major street avenues. Regardless of the size of the protests,
cities and states have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Social media has transformed social movements by creating a more heterogeneous mobilization and
departing from the ideas of identity politics from the 1960s where identities were mainly group based
(minorities, women, or immigrants). This has generated a rise of personalized politics, where the focus
is on individual preferences over group preferences. Social media facilitated such transformation by
involving communication technologies that allow individuals to activate their loosely tied social
networks. Furthermore, in the 21st century the use of social media has affected the complexity of
protestors and police relationship. Social media provides a platform where people organize in a more
spontaneous and rapid manner, leaving police agencies with a question of how to react and maintain
law and order under these circumstances. These conditions produce violent encounters between the
police and demonstrators due to lack of readiness police agencies possess. This brings into question
how social media changed the organization of protesters and police agencies, and how it is providing
the necessary conditions for the use of force by police agencies.
Social networking has created more heterogeneous mobilizations (among protesters) in which
different movements are concentrating on moving targets, and is hindering police agencies response
readiness to street protests. Consequently, police agencies use force when policing protests. In a

Head Start Law Research Paper
Teachers are in the news almost every day. Sometimes for good reasons and sometimes for bad
reasons. One article I found in the news was one about the Head Start law. This law was created by
George W. Bush. It required teachers to have a bachelor s degree with training in early childhood
education. 74% of all teachers in the Head Start program have their bachelor s degree and training in
early childhood education. A problem with this back in 2007 was that the law did not fund a college or
university to help train the teachers for the program. Today, there are many places where teachers can
go to get this training. The program has lessons that help the teachers to boost their skills and
knowledge about early childhoods. For younger children

Toms Shoes Business Model That Can Realize Both Commercial...
Abstract
In 2006, American entrepreneur Blake Mycoskie took his vacation in Argentina, and he liked the
traditional Argentine shoe, the alpargata. During the trip, he found many kids in villages even could
not afford a pair of shoes to protect their feet. When Mycoskie returned to America, he set up TOMS
Shoes, trying to help children in need by establishing a one for one business model, a new business
model that can realize both commercial value and social value. This case will discuss the strengths,
weakness of TOMS Shoes, analyze opportunities and threats on the external environment, and make
comprehensive evaluation on the base of each aspects of TOMS Shoes business.
TOMS Shoes is a young company, which was founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie, a seasoned
entrepreneur. Before founding TOMS Shoes, Mycoskie accumulated a wealth of enterprise
management experience by starting five companies in different fields like laundry services and
billboard advertising. In 2006, Mycoskie travelled Argentina. He enjoyed a life in Argentina and lived
as the locals. During this trip, he found most Argentineans wore the alpargata, a soft, casual canvas
shoe. He thought may be this kind of comfortable shoes would popular in United States. However, he
was not ready to do shoe business immediately. An occasional chance, he came across a woman who
was a member of a charity group, which provided shoes for children in need. Mycoskie decided to

Health education and health promotion focuses on the behaviors, systems, environments, and policies
that affect health at various levels by encompassing the biological, environmental, psychological,
social, physical, and medical sciences (University of Utah College of Health, 2015). In addition, it
involves the development of individual, group, institutional, community, and systemic strategies to
improve health knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors. This in turn would empower people to take
more control over their personal, community, and environmental health and well being. As Health

Social, Crime And Punishment In The Elizabethan Era
Although there were many issues and problems that occurred during her reign, Queen Elizabeth I
successfully addressed and responded to many of the social, political, and educational issues of her
time. The Queen reacted to many different situations in a strict manner in order to strengthen and
rebuild England. Elizabeth worked to spread literature, prevent crime, and expand the art of the
theater. As she strove to solve issues, Queen Elizabeth led England to a long period of growth and
prosperity. During her reign, Queen Elizabeth I worked to spread education and literature throughout
England. In Elizabethan England, Laura Marvel describes the advances in literature and how they
affected the lives of english citizens. Before her rule, literature was uncommon because texts were

The authors of Crime and Punishment in the Elizabethan Era conclude that due to Elizabeth s strict
convictions, England became a safer society. Even for committing minor crimes, people would be
arrested and punished quickly (1). Before Elizabeth s reign, punishments for committing crimes were
uncommon, resulting in an unorganized society. Having a careless, free society leads to outbursts and
revolts which could eventually lead to bigger disputes, like a civil war. Elizabeth worked to prevent
this by enforcing acts of public humiliation and larger punishments. These tough punishments lead
people to not want to break the law or commit any crimes whatsoever. Although Elizabeth was strict
and penalized citizens for small crimes, her actions led to maintaining peace and balance throughout
England. The orderly society that she built could ve been disastrous if it weren t for the austere
precautions she took to enhance England. The actions Queen Elizabeth I took towards crime and
punishment helped transform England into a more stable

Benefits Of Temporary Visa Programs
Over the past few decades, the American workforce has been on the decline. As many of the previous
generations start to retire and leave the workforce so does their skills, something American companies
are having problems replacing. Up till the 1970 s the American workforce saw the number of unskilled
workers decline with the number of skilled workers increasing. In the 1970 s however, this trend
stagnated and has held constant. With individuals aged 55 59 years getting ready to retire the
American workforce is about to lose a large portion of its skilled workers. This puts American
companies in a very precarious position, how do these companies replace these workers? Some
companies are moving their operations to places where the number of skilled workers is steadily
increasing. Most companies, however, take advantage of temporary visa programs like H 1B. This
visa program allows these companies to bring in skilled workers as non immigrants to work in the
United States for three years, up to six with a renewal. Currently, the H 1B program allows for 65,000
foreign workers with an additional 20,000 visas set aside for individuals pursuing doctorate degrees.
Additionally, universities are allowed an unlimited number of visas for individuals pursuing bachelor s
degrees. In order to apply for this visa, a foreign worker must have already been offered a position and
actually it is their employer who applies for the visa. Due to the number of applicants in recent years

Gender In Victorianism

Victorianism
Victorianism is the cultural influence orchestrated by the reign of Queen Victoria from the year 1837
to the year 1901. The dominant notions of these times were moralizing, prudish, repressed and old
fashion, as opposed to traditional. The above elements of culture traversed across the English society
to other parts of America, influencing how people dressed and celebrated. The central ideas of
Victorianism emerged during the period of early Victorianism. Significant developments during this
period included science, economics, and social lifestyle. In terms of politics, there was the
introduction of democracy and parliamentary system of governance. This was also the time that the
Anglicanism, through the Church of England stroke a balance with other Catholic communities. The
dominant social values during the period of Victorianism were patriarchal families and well defined
roles of mothers and fathers.
Construction of gender during Victorianism. Prior to the Victorianism period, the roles of men and
women had no specific definition. Victorianism brought a sharp definition of gender roles with father
specializing in specific tasks different from mothers. Formerly, the women and men could easily work
alongside each other. During the onset of Victorianism, many men got into formal employment that
entailed traveling long distances to work in different professions. Men left behind their wives at home

Constantine s Edict Of Milan
Throughout history there have been moments that define the rest of time. Turning points or critical
moments in which one decision or creation forever changed the path of history. Such moments as
Constantine s Edict of Milan, Gutenberg s development of the printing press, and Martin Luther s
Ninety five Theses forever changed the landscape of Western Civilization. Who knows where Western
Civilization would be without these great hinges of history.
In 313 CE, Constantine passed the Edict of Milan. This edict declared the freedom of everyone in the
Roman Empire to choose their own religion. He neither made polytheism illegal nor did he make
Christianity the official religion of Rome. Instead, to placate both pagans and Christians, both were
acceptable to be practiced. This edict also stated that the emperor was protected by the highest
divinity, whether that was God, Jupiter or any other god in the Roman pantheon. Constantine
continued his work to bring pagans and Christians into peaceful coexistence. He gave the Christians
their property confiscated during Diocletian s Great Persecution, but he had the Roman treasury
reimburse the people who had bought the stolen goods. He also declared the Lord s Day to be called
Sunday in honor of the day the Christian s God rested and in honor of the sun, an aspect of pagan
worship. He even kept the traditional title of Pontifex Maximus or chief priest. After decades of
persecution the Christians finally had an emperor on their

Wilderness In The Bible
As I remembered the many examples of the wilderness in the Bible I wanted to see how what they
have in common could to serve to define what it meant to be in the wilderness. From the stories of
Adam and Eve, the people of Israel, Moses, and Jesus being tempted in the wilderness, I found
common characteristics of how wilderness was understood. It was a place away from society and with
less control. People are often lost and wandering as they experience the wilderness. It is where people
go to be tested or punished and people often feel disconnected from God. It is also the place in the
New Testament where mentally ill people dwell. But for all of its negativity, the wilderness is not all
bad. It is where we find miracles and some of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It felt natural to use Tom Long and approach the text in a then vs now mindset. The problem in the
text is that John is working in the wilderness, a place of uncertainty and often challenge. The solution
then is that Jesus seeks out John in the wilderness and makes his presence known. The problem we
have today is that we are in Advent but are experiencing a range of emotions similar to the diversity
the wilderness can bring. Our solution today is knowing that Christ is near in Advent and that He will
still reach us in our joy or in our pain. For the structure, I decided with: problem now, problem then,
solution then, solution now. I always prefer to begin the sermon with what is relevant in today s world
in hope of getting people s attention early. I also like to end with the solution for the present day as
that gives the best chance of the audience leaving with the good news at the top of their

Charles I to Oliver Cromwell affected the people of that time, shows the Child of Hope, shows the

influence of the English people on the world, and shows a new era being heralded in without which

During January of 1629 it was decided by parliament to legally try to reduce the power held by the
crown. In so doing it was found that Popery and placing taxes on the people without their consent was
treason (Kagan 454). Popery was especially bad in England because it was in England that the king
was also the head of the church and could make any religious policies he desired.
When parliament declared Charles I guilty of treason England was full of mixed emotions. Those who
followed the king believed that only through submission to divine authority could they be true
Christians. Dissenters were able to gain control thus beheading Charles, and unknowingly creating a
dictator (Tomlinson 3).
Royalists were those who supported the king. Their name was derived from Caballeo (Spanish) this
term denoted someone who was Catholic and had an extreme dislike for Protestants (Chapman 57).
Roundheads were those who supported anyone but the king. Their name referred to the apprentices of
the day, these apprentices caused conflicts to escalate into violence and in turn caused many people to
flee the cities (Chapman 58).
With compromise now nearly impossible parliament was not about to change. It could not change
because: Parliament was already so far ahead, Religion could be used to control and sway the people,
and Charles was stubborn (Buchan 53/54). Oliver Cromwell emerges as the leader of the dissenters
and quickly takes control of a volatile situation. Authority was

Poka-Yoke Essay
Within all sectors of private industry, from product manufacturing to food service, the human element
creates a natural level of error, and thus the need to prevent incorrect operation of an interactive
system has become paramount for every large company or corporation. Every operational process
engaged in by a person, whether a worker or a customer, presents an array of opportunities for that
person to commit avoidable mistakes which nullify the operation s beneficial potential. By designing a
product or mass production system in such a way that these mistakes cannot be made, or essentially
fool proofing something so that it can only be used correctly, it is possible to reduce or eliminate
entirely the type of errors which can cumulatively cost companies millions of dollars per year. The
Japanese have perfected this concept of specifically engineered fail safes through the widespread use
of Poka Yoke, a term which is translated as resistance to errors by avoiding (yoker) errors resulting
from inattention (poka) (Dudek Burlikowska Szewieczek, 2009). By recognizing the potential for
defects in the performance of any process, and consciously redesigning that process in such a way as
to remove the chance of that error occurring, it is possible to create systems that can only be operated
in the intended fashion. The underlying philosophy and methodology of Poka Yoke was introduced by
Dr. Shigeo Shingo in 1961 ¦ one of the engineers for Toyota Motor Corporation ¦ to

Description Of An Electrocardiogram, Or Ecg Or Ekg
Introduction
An Electrocardiogram, or ECG or EKG, is a recording of the hearts electrical activity as a graph over
a period of time, as detected by electrodes attached to the outer surface of the skin and recorded by a
device external of the body (Boundless). The graph of an ECG can identify various things initiated by
the heart, such as its rate, rhythm, a decrease in blood flow, and a possible enlargement. For a healthy
individual, a typical ECG shows the whole cardiac cycle or heart beat which includes a P wave (Atrial
depolarization), a QRS complex (Ventricular depolarization), and a T wave (Ventricular
repolarization). The ECG s first spike or P wave is triggered by the Sinoatrial node (SA node), which
is also known as the pacemaker and the electrical impulse from the atria to the ventricles is conducted
by the atrioventricular node (AV node). During each heart beat the heart muscle depolarizes, this is
detected on the skin where the ECG electrodes are placed by the machine and then translated into a
linear representation (Boundless). The resting membrane potential of a heart cell is 60mv, when an
influx of positive ions enter the cell (NA+ and CA++) depolarization takes place causing the heart to
contract. This action takes place during the peak of the P wave (Atria systole). The QRS complex
represent when the left and right ventricles contract and depolarize, also called ventricular systole.
This action normally takes place at the highest amplitude in the complex,

Difference Between A Pert And Gantt Chart
Compare and contrast the information that one receives from a Gantt chart, versus that of a PERT
diagram A significant piece of project management is organization. Both Pert and Gantt charts are
essential tools that are utilized by project managers in creating a project schedule. Both types of charts
offer tools for managers to examine projects through visualization, helping divide responsibilities into
controllable parts. An important difference between a PERT chart and a Gantt chart is the way the
information is presented. Gantt charts display information in the design of a bar chart. This
representation helps show the percentage of work accomplished for each task. On the other hand,
PERT shows data as a network model. Meaning that a PERT chart displays an earlier node from which
tasks branch out. This helps project managers envision the arrangement of tasks. Together PERT and
Gantt charts will show the tasks to be accomplished, but the charts highlight dissimilar parts. A Gantt
chart s primary focus is on the ratio completion of each task, without indicating the connection that
two tasks may have to each other. While PERT typically does not show the percentage completed,
PERT employs a network model, which makes it is easy to see which tasks depend on each other, it
typically does not show the percentage of completed tasks. Examine the advantages of using a Gantt
chart over a PERT chart and vice versa. Determine when it is appropriate to use one

The Role Of Indo-European Imperialism In Indonesia
Indonesia is a country made up of more than seventeen thousand islands. As part of Southeast Asia, it
lies between the Indian and Pacific oceans. For more than 300 years, Indonesia was a Dutch colony.
Japan invaded and occupied the islands in 1942, during the second World War. Throughout the three
years of Japanese occupation, some 42,000 Dutch military personnel were imprisoned and more than
100,000 Dutch colonials who could not prove Indonesian descent were forced into concentration
camps. As European women were almost nonexistent on the islands, many Dutchmen married native
women. The offspring of these mixed Indo European unions; these Eurasians who felt the same
loyalty to the Netherlands as their white fathers, had full rights as Dutch citizens, were Christians and
followed Dutch customs, suffered more than any other during the Japanese occupation. According to a

three days I have consumed 3 cups which is not great for me, considering I am supposed to intake that
amount in one particular day. I prefer not to consume milk, but I will find other alternatives to help

The Importance Of Community At A Young Age
Growing up in The Commune, as my friends called it, I learned a lot about the importance of
community at a young age. When I was seven years old I moved to Tierra Nueva Cohousing, a unique
intentional community of 26 households that my parents developed when they returned from their
Peace Corp work in Africa. Cohousing was designed to facilitate the development of strong
community bonds through regularly sharing meals with neighbors, cultivating a common garden,
making decisions through consensus, and caring for one another in times of need. One of the most
extraordinary experiences growing up in this environment was when the Cohousing community
members came together to care for me and my family after my little brother passed away from
complications of hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Our neighbors brought meals, provided childcare,
and served as an important source of emotional support that was vital for the healing of our family.
Coming from such a strong community built around interpersonal connections, supportive friendships,
and a common desire for positive change, I knew that wanted a career that shared these values, and
that is ultimately how I fell in love with Internal Medicine. However, I was initially drawn to
Medicine by the complex diagnostic, therapeutic, and social puzzles I encountered during my third
year Internal Medicine rotation. Working at both the San Francisco County Hospital and the UCSF
homeless clinic every case was just as challenging as it was

Essay about The Republican Party in Sinclair Lewis Babbitt
The Republican Party in Sinclair Lewis Babbitt
Sinclair Lewis Babbitt portrayed a man bent on following his political party; his actions seemingly
followed that religiously, and today s version of the Republican Party is proof that we are not too far
off from Lewis version, despite the expanse of time. George Babbitt, the main character in Lewis
novel, viewed the world in the eyes of a businessman. He saw immigrants as a waste to society,
business and the means to survive, and the ability to own the latest and greatest inventions as top
priorities in his life. One must, in the 1920s and well as in today s world, set themselves in a political
affiliation, generally one that describes the person and how he is. To ... Show more content on

Babbitt was just the icon of the Republican viewpoint.
Lewis probed into the Republican policies in order to write a character about them. Babbitt attempted
a change, a way of rebelling against his mechanical lifestyle, which one could view as someone s
break of the political system. It was too hard for him though, as his friends pressured him to join the
Good Citizens League and end this crazy rebellion. His downfall inevitably came over his wife s
operation, and he began to preach, the crimes of labor unions, the perils of immigration, and the
delights of golf, morality, and bank accounts (Lewis 368) more than ever. Lewis hinted through that
statement that the Good Citizens League was little more than a political club, or more specifically, an
offshoot of the Republican Party itself. Once again, Babbitt reflects the party s actions and policies in
what he speaks about, also saying a great deal about who was part of that party.
If the party was like that over seventy five years ago, and many would consider such thoughts corrupt,
the Republican Party surely must have changed over such a long time. The success of the Democrats
during the Great Depression and World War II led many to believe that the Republican Party was the
cause of the Great Depression. Its policies certainly would direct themselves toward the contrary yet
still the blame rested on them. The blame still rested

Allies To Blame For The Injustices In Ww2 Essay
To what extent should the allies share the guilt for the injustices perpetrated during the 1930s and
World War II?
This symposium gave delegates the opportunity to hear and speak on different perspectives of the
influential nations or powers that were major aspects of the World War II. Almost all allied force
delegates denied accusations to take any part of the blame for the injustices perpetrated during this
atrocious time and the events preceding. The Axis forced admitted to their faults, but provided strong
reasoning of why the Allies should share the blame. Allied forces denied accusations to take full blame
or partial blame for the brutality perpetrated throughout this atrocious time and the events preceding.
The Axis seeked the share of oppression and maltreatment of citizens amid the war, while Allies
demanded for the full burden to impose on the Axis, rather than distribution of blame.
The Allies should share partial blame for the injustices perpetrated during the war, but less significant

Ethical Hedonism In Robert Nozick s The Experience Machine
Robert Nozick was a modern day American philosopher, who had a large variety of philosophical
questions regarding the workings of the modern world (Feser), in 1974 Nozick finished work on his
book which would give birth to the Experience Machine . In Anarchy, State, and Utopia (Nozick
1974), Nozick created the thought experiment The Experience Machine with which he attempts to
challenge the idea of ethical hedonism (42). The Experience Machine is a thought experiment, in
which a person is given the choice of entering a machine that would stimulate pleasure into a person s
brain using a machine, and that the person could not distinguish the differences between the machine
and reality, in some variations of the experiment, once a person enters the machine, that person cannot
leave. (Nozick 1974, 42 43) According to Nozick, a person should choose not to enter the Experience
Machine, Nozick expresses that it would be unethical to enter the Experience Machine due to none of
those experiences, and the memories that come from them, being real, and that since they are all
created in a man made reality, that they should hold no value to a person (43). Nozick s notion that
one should choose not to enter the Experience Machine is correct, while it allows people to experience
anything they ever wanted, a person should not enter the Experience Machine, because it creates a
false sense of reality due to how people cannot differentiate the two, it doesn t allow people to do

Biography of Andy Whorl
Andy Whorl Andy Whorl was a popular American print artist in the 1960. He helped create the style
of art known as Pop Art. Pop Art showed what was popular in American culture; products, celebrities,
etc. Andy Whorl s career started out as a commercial artist. Some of his fellow artists admired him and
his work, while other did not consider him a true artist. He displayed some of his work in museums
and became famous. A friend of Andy told him to make art based on everyday things, so Andy made
his famous picture of the multiple Campbell s soup cans. Whorl used mass production to make some
of his artwork like the Ten Lizes featuring Elizabeth Taylor. His mass production method involved silk
screening. Before he could make the silk screen products, he had to have the images enlarged several
times. The method of silk screening and mass production allowed Andy Whorl to have a team create
his work instead of himself slaving away on his work. His team worked out of his studio in New York
City. His studio, which he called The Factory , had three locations throughout New York City. Andy
Whorl used consumerism in his art. He made prints of pictures of famous people like Marilyn Monroe
and Elizabeth Taylor. Some of his artwork has sublime tones of death. For instance his obsession with
Elizabeth Taylor started when her husband died. He also started his artwork of Marilyn Monroe after
her death. His inspiration for his Jackie Kennedy series was the assassination of her husband,

Everything roots from the family unit and this can t be ignored. Yoruba families are, like most african
families, dominated by the father. Where the difference lies is the children have a relationship with
their father that emphasis love. The dynamic between love and respect are the differences between the
two groups. Children call their father by gentle names and there s a rigorous amount of cultural
niceties and traditions that children are to learn when interacting with adults. Igbo: Family life is also
the foundation of Igbo culture. More so than Yoruba culture is the power the father has over the
family. Igbo fathers emphasis respect more than love though I wouldn t say the love is more or less in
the cultures. It s more common for igbo children to call their father s more authoritative names like sir,
and culturally there s an element of respective distance. I ve seen yoruba families eat from the same
plate and children sitting among adults while they speak. In Igbo culture if you wish to eat with your
father, you eat from his plate, but he will not leave where he s at to eat from the child s plate. Typically
fathers are served separate from children, and as children become youths they chose to eat separately

There exist numerous types aural files. Thus, if you desire to alter the sound formats or replicate the

various file types. These file types can be differentiated through examination of the file name

Regarding sound quality, OGG Vorbis is better than MP3.
MP3 is restricted by copyrights while OGG Vorbis is free for all.
In MP3 the bit rate of compression remains unchanged and cannot be varied while in OGG Vorbis the
compression bit rate can be varied according to your requirements.
Fraunhofer Gesellschaft and Thompson Multimedia developed the MP3 while the Viph.Org
Foundation created OGG Vorbis.
So between MP3 vs. Ogg Which Should You go for?
Now that you know the difference between the two formats which one is best for you?Owing to its
early introduction into the world of file sharing, MP3 became tremendously fashionable. Its
recognition is based on the reality that the phrase MP3 was synonymic with Compressed audio. The
word MP3 is often used by some people to mean any aural file. On the other hand, the OGG Vorbis
file format is increasingly becoming trendy among developers due to its better quality sound and free
for all code base. Nowadays, the hardware and toy makers are employing OGG Vorbis in the encoding
of their audio files to evade MP3 patent problems and attain well organized compression. Though,
most of the portable music players or MP3 players do not support the format of OGG Vorbis. The

Pros And Cons Of Water Privatization

The Bad Effects of The Privatization of Water The privatization of water has its pros and cons, like the
quality going down to save money, and like the poor not being able to get access to clean water.
Massive layoffs could happen so the company could save money, this makes them under staffed. Rate
increase can also occur in the company to increase profits. Water privatization in my opinion, has the
cons out weighing the pros in the argument on whether it is good for the public, and the company
itself. To talk about the privatization, first you have to know what it is. Privatization is the process of
transferring the control of an enterprise from the government sector to the private sector (giving ...

change the regulations based on cost benefit analysis, which compromises the public health for the
sake of the company getting more money. If a company where to buy the right to water privatization
in a community, and the community were to be dissatisfied, it would be next to impossible and costly
to buy those right back from the company. Once again, the company s goal is to get profit from this.
The community would be putting their trust in that company to provide safe clean water. Doing so
with privatization also will lead to massive layoffs since the companies want to make the most money
that they can. Again, since the company could be under staffed, it would put the water quality at risk.
It would put both workers and consumers at

The jacket was as black as midnight and silver buckles and straps shiny enough to blind anybody. I
was bursting with pride and love with the jacket when I heard my mother call my name telling me my
jacket is the closet. I carefully approached the closet hoping that the jacket was mine not mine. I
looked in the closet and hoped that my jacket was the one I wanted, not for my mean brother. I found

The Pros And Cons Of Haiti
Since 1994, Haiti has experienced seven major military and humanitarian interventions undertaken by
the United States of America (USA) and the United Nations (UN). These interventions are thought to
have helped Haiti develop economically and politically, but has this been the case? Despite the many
interventions, or perhaps because of them, Haiti is still the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere
and one of the poorest countries in the world. The country is overwhelmed with corruption, high
unemployment, high crime levels, and miserable economic prospects for its citizens. Looking at the
advantages and disadvantages of the interventions gives us a clearer picture of why Haiti is in such a
dismal state today.
Interventions brought thousands of foreign troops to Haiti, but also brought several benefits. For

The Necessity of Automated Fingerprint Identification...
Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) in law enforcement and border control
applications has heightened the need for ensuring that these systems are not compromised. While
several issues related to fingerprint system security have been investigated, including the use of fake

received very little attention. Fingerprint obfuscation refers to the deliberate alteration of the

Fingerprint quality assessment routines used inmost fingerprint identification systems, such as the
opensource NFIQ2 (NIST Fingerprint Image Quality) softwaremay be useful in detecting altered
fingerprints if thecorresponding images are indeed of poor quality. But, notall altered fingerprint
images have poor quality. Since existing fingerprint quality assessment algorithms are designed to
examine if an imagecontains sufficient information (say, minutiae) for matching, they have limited
capability in determining if an image is anatural fingerprint or an altered fingerprint.Altered
fingerprints are different from fake fingerprints. The use of fake fingers made ofglue, latex, or silicone
is a well publicized method to circumvent fingerprint systems. Altered fingerprints, however, are real
fingers that are used to conceal one s identity in order to evade identification by a biometric system.
While fake fingers are typically used by individuals toadopt another person s identity, altered fingers
are used to mask one s own identity. In order to detect attacks based on fake fingers, many software
and hardware solutions have been proposed. However, the problem of altered fingerprints has hitherto
not been studied in the literature and there are no reported techniques to identify them. Furthermore,
the lack of public databases comprised of altered fingerprint images has

Tax Evasion Paper
The Extended Arm of the United States Government in its Battle against Tax Evaders

Taxes are a major contributor of the American economy. The tax system in the United States depends
on voluntary compliance, which means that each citizen is responsible for filing a tax return when
required and for determining and paying the correct amount of tax . (Albrect, Albrect, Albrect Albrect

When the Sixteenth Amendment to the Constitution was ratified (February 3, 1913) giving Congress
the power to lay and collect taxes on incomes , citizens began arguing that it was not properly ratified
and income taxes are illegal. Citizens continue to raise such arguments in spite of the fact that they

Being A Youth Mentor, Future Social Worker, And Concerned...
I choose to research representations of insecure attachments in children of incarcerated mothers. This
is an issue of both personal and societal important to me as a youth mentor, future social worker, and
concerned citizen. Since 2014, I have worked worked as a summer camp counselor of children aged
five to 13 in my hometown of New Kensington. The summer camp is organized by a non profit to
facilitate conflict resolution skills in children who are aggressive or anti social in school and other
settings. These children have multiple odds stacked against them: race (most are African American),
economic status, and unstable surrounding all contribute to their life experiences. I was taken aback
when I discovered how many of the campers had an incarcerated mother, father, or both. Along with
displaying aggressive behavior, most of the campers had difficulty bonding with their peers,
caregivers, and camp counselors. In the fields of psychology and social work, these are textbook signs
of insecure attachment. Much of my time as a camp counselor was spent working to foster acceptance
and affection in children who often don t receive any at home. Beyond anecdotal evidence, the role of
an absent mother in insecure attachments has been explored extensively by researchers. The research I
reviewed can be categorized as initial research on insecure attachments and their implications, and
more specific to the population I researched, insecure attachments in the children of incarcerated

Crusading, much like Imperialism in the 20th century, was all about expansion. During the middle

Adventure, money, land, and religion were all big reasons for participating in the Crusades of the
Middle Ages (4).
The first Crusade began on November 27th 1095, as a response to the attack on the Byzantine Empire
by the Muslims. Pope Urban II inspired many clergy and laypeople to join the crusading force. There
was much excitement for the new adventure that awaited the people of Europe. They united at the

Anatolia. They then fought and overtook many city states belonging to the Byzantine Empire with
final destination Jerusalem, in their sights (5). The Majority of people who joined the crusades were
from France, with others coming from Lorraine, Burgundy, Flanders, and Italy. Many common people
were interested in crusading as well as noble individuals. The reason for this was the chance of finding
and claiming any land once they had overtaken parts of the Middle East (6). The crusaders enjoyed
considerable success during their first couple of years. In only their first month of crusading they
conquered Anatolia in the year 1097. During the same year they won a decisive victory over the Turks,

Explaining the Three Stages in The Hero s Journey Essay
During the course of this World Literature class, several stories have been covered that accurately
describe Joseph Campbell s mono myth, or basic pattern found in narratives from every corner of the
world. The Hero s Journey in it s entirety has seventeen stages or steps, but if boiled down can be
described in three; the departure, the initiation, and the return (Monomyth Cycle). Each stage has
several steps, but the cycle describes the hero starting in his initial state, encountering something to
change him, and this his return as a changed person. To further explain this concept, there are a few
stories covered in this class that can be used. Beowulf is an epic poem telling the story of Beowulf, a

In fact, he removes any sort of advantage man might have over monster as he removes his gear and
weapons, fighting the monster truly mono a mono, hand to hand. So while Beowulf so far h as
followed the mono myth on it s major points (the three described earlier), in the finer details he has
deviated from the set path (Beowulf Study Guide). Beowulf s victory over Grendel should be
considered as crossing of the first threshold . Prior to his victory, Beowulf had only triumphed over
man. This victory over monster provides him with more (personal) glory, and causes a bit of a dip into
the next major step of the Hero s Journey, the initiation. Beowulf is interesting in that he combines
two distinct events into the initiation stage of the hero. The appointment as king is the obvious choice
for pinpointing the exact point of the story in which the hero undergoes the greatest change, but really
it is the entire time from after Grendel s death to when Beowulf actually becomes king. His core
character changes, a maturation from warrior to leader possible only because of his trial and ability to
overcome hardship and challenge. The seeds of a true leader are planted however, and the reader
begins to see the change from his focus on himself and his glory, to that of his people. His focus will
begin to switch to that of others, not just himself. This however will take time to take root and really
change his character. For the time

Birth Control Effects Effects of Birth Control 11 million women are currently taking birth control orally in the U.S. Studies have shown that 99% of the time birth control helps by preventing any type of unwanted pregnancies. Although, many are unaware of the mental and physical health effects that birth control could have on them. How Birth Control Works During the beginning of each menstrual cycle, the estrogen levels in the women s body starts to increase. Estrogen is hormone ,where once released into the female body it begins to thicken the lining of the uterus in preparation of fertilizing an egg. When the estrogen levels higher even more, the ovaries release an egg. This process is well known as ovulation. After this, the progesterone levels rise. Progesterone is a hormone that thickens the lining of the uterus to prepare for the fertilizing of the egg. During this process, the egg is traveling through the fallopian tubes, trying to get to the uterus. When the egg is fully fertilized and it implants itself within the uterus the pregnancy process begins. If the egg doesn t successfully fertilize or it doesn t attach itself accurately to the uterus, then, there is no chance of pregnancy. As a result, the estrogen and progesterone hormone levels start to decrease and the thickened uterus lining starts to shed. Birth control is a synthetic type of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Birth control works because it prevents the whole ovulation process. With ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Current Methods Used For Extra Terrestrial Intelligence DISCUSS THE CURRENT METHODS USED TO SEARCH FOR EXTRA TERRESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE, SUCH AS RADIOTELESCOPES AND SPACE PROBES. GIVE YOUR OPINION ON HOW LIKELY IT IS THAT LIFE WILL BE DISCOVERED AND GIVE EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT YOUR ANSWER. WHAT IS EXTRA TELESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE? Extra terrestrial Intelligence can be abbreviated to ETI, which asks the question; Are we alone in this universe? ETI is life discovered beyond Earth, not organisms that humans sent to space. Scientifically, extra terrestrial life may be titled; xenobiology, exobiology or astrobiology. SATELLITES Satellites are objects placed into orbit around celestial objects such as, planets or stars. Artificial satellites collect information about a terrestrial object and send it to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This allows communication satellites to remain in the same position in relation to the ground. Inclined orbit: An inclined satellite passes over a different part of the planet each orbit. Polar orbit: A polar orbit passes over the north and south poles each orbit crossing various places in the equator each orbit. Elliptical orbit: An elliptical orbit has no specific speed or distance, it depends on the apogee (furthest distance away) and perigee (closest to the surface). The first artificial satellite was Sputnik 1, and satellites have continued to be launched since 1957. Sputnik 1 was a small aluminium ball with four antennas attached, although modern ETI s have more complex bodies they are still designed following the same basic structure. With experimentation, these bodies have been designed to be as strong and light as possible with the same essential uses. There is a platform named a bus inside satellites which has; antennas, solar arrays and payload instruments attached. It also contains batteries, computers and thrusters. Satellites have large panels attached as they have to charge themselves, these arrays can be tilted to allow for the most amount of sunlight possible. If the satellite drifts into shade rechargeable batteries become the new power source. SPACE PROBES A space probe is a robotic spacecraft that exits Earth to explore space. Probes ... • 4. Decaying Gratification Aristotle once formed a compelling viewpoint, stating in his discussion on self mastery that many individuals choose to have a weakness of will. In other words, they know what is best for them, but still choose to do something else. In an experiment done by Walter Michel, many of the individuals in the experiment have proven to make a rational decision to not do something that their basic instincts were pushing them to do. Aristotle s engrossing point of view has shown that willpower can be achieved, and make the impossible things possible. Based on my own experience, I had not thought about delaying gratification or self control. Typically, I try to make decisions to act in ways that will benefit me, although sometimes I slip into a moment of weakness. When the Oreo was placed on my desk, my basic instinct was that I was hungry. Even though I knew that I could receive another Oreo, if I waited until the end of class to eat it, I had slipped into a instant of frailty and eventually, just succumbed to it. I have found that this sense of self control has been an issue with me throughout school, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If I had a time machine, the first thing that I might choose to do is go back to a certain point of time, and undo a decision I made back then. Yet, the result of making bad decisions was suffering through certain troubles that were because of unfortunate choices. In order to have a life without any regrets, I have found that practical wisdom is very important. I have learned to live with my past choices, and even find something good in them. A skill that my parents implemented in me early in my life was that I had the right to feel any emotion that I wanted, and do what genuinely makes me happy. My personal goal everyday is to restructure my own intentions, so that I make decisions quickly, when it comes to deliberation, and overcome all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From the Arab Spring, in 2010 2012, to the protests that are more recent like Ferguson, Mexico and Venezuela in 2014. Just in the past five years, individuals worldwide orchestrated over 20 demonstrations, and used social media platforms, principally as Facebook or Twitter, to organize protests. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social media has transformed social movements by creating a more heterogeneous mobilization and departing from the ideas of identity politics from the 1960s where identities were mainly group based (minorities, women, or immigrants). This has generated a rise of personalized politics, where the focus is on individual preferences over group preferences. Social media facilitated such transformation by involving communication technologies that allow individuals to activate their loosely tied social networks. Furthermore, in the 21st century the use of social media has affected the complexity of protestors and police relationship. Social media provides a platform where people organize in a more spontaneous and rapid manner, leaving police agencies with a question of how to react and maintain law and order under these circumstances. These conditions produce violent encounters between the police and demonstrators due to lack of readiness police agencies possess. This brings into question how social media changed the organization of protesters and police agencies, and how it is providing the necessary conditions for the use of force by police agencies. Social networking has created more heterogeneous mobilizations (among protesters) in which different movements are concentrating on moving targets, and is hindering police agencies response readiness to street protests. Consequently, police agencies use force when policing protests. In a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Head Start Law Research Paper Teachers are in the news almost every day. Sometimes for good reasons and sometimes for bad reasons. One article I found in the news was one about the Head Start law. This law was created by George W. Bush. It required teachers to have a bachelor s degree with training in early childhood education. 74% of all teachers in the Head Start program have their bachelor s degree and training in early childhood education. A problem with this back in 2007 was that the law did not fund a college or university to help train the teachers for the program. Today, there are many places where teachers can go to get this training. The program has lessons that help the teachers to boost their skills and knowledge about early childhoods. The authors of Crime and Punishment in the Elizabethan Era conclude that due to Elizabeth s strict convictions, England became a safer society. Even for committing minor crimes, people would be arrested and punished quickly (1). Before Elizabeth s reign, punishments for committing crimes were uncommon, resulting in an unorganized society. Having a careless, free society leads to outbursts and revolts which could eventually lead to bigger disputes, like a civil war. Elizabeth worked to prevent this by enforcing acts of public humiliation and larger punishments. These tough punishments lead people to not want to break the law or commit any crimes whatsoever. Although Elizabeth was strict and penalized citizens for small crimes, her actions led to maintaining peace and balance throughout England. As many of the previous generations start to retire and leave the workforce so does their skills, something American companies are having problems replacing. Up till the 1970 s the American workforce saw the number of unskilled workers decline with the number of skilled workers increasing. In the 1970 s however, this trend stagnated and has held constant. With individuals aged 55 59 years getting ready to retire the American workforce is about to lose a large portion of its skilled workers. This puts American companies in a very precarious position, how do these companies replace these workers? Some companies are moving their operations to places where the number of skilled workers is steadily increasing. Most companies, however, take advantage of temporary visa programs like H 1B. • 13. Constantine s Edict Of Milan Throughout history there have been moments that define the rest of time. Turning points or critical moments in which one decision or creation forever changed the path of history. Such moments as Constantine s Edict of Milan, Gutenberg s development of the printing press, and Martin Luther s Ninety five Theses forever changed the landscape of Western Civilization. Who knows where Western Civilization would be without these great hinges of history. In 313 CE, Constantine passed the Edict of Milan. This edict declared the freedom of everyone in the Roman Empire to choose their own religion. He neither made polytheism illegal nor did he make Christianity the official religion of Rome. Instead, to placate both pagans and Christians, both were acceptable to be practiced. This edict also stated that the emperor was protected by the highest divinity, whether that was God, Jupiter or any other god in the Roman pantheon. Constantine continued his work to bring pagans and Christians into peaceful coexistence. He gave the Christians their property confiscated during Diocletian s Great Persecution, but he had the Roman treasury reimburse the people who had bought the stolen goods. He also declared the Lord s Day to be called Sunday in honor of the day the Christian s God rested and in honor of the sun, an aspect of pagan worship. From the stories of Adam and Eve, the people of Israel, Moses, and Jesus being tempted in the wilderness, I found common characteristics of how wilderness was understood. It was a place away from society and with less control. People are often lost and wandering as they experience the wilderness. During January of 1629 it was decided by parliament to legally try to reduce the power held by the crown. In so doing it was found that Popery and placing taxes on the people without their consent was treason (Kagan 454). Popery was especially bad in England because it was in England that the king was also the head of the church and could make any religious policies he desired. When parliament declared Charles I guilty of treason England was full of mixed emotions. Those who followed the king believed that only through submission to divine authority could they be true Christians. Dissenters were able to gain control thus beheading Charles, and unknowingly creating a dictator (Tomlinson 3). Royalists were those who supported the king. • 16. Poka-Yoke Essay Within all sectors of private industry, from product manufacturing to food service, the human element creates a natural level of error, and thus the need to prevent incorrect operation of an interactive system has become paramount for every large company or corporation. Every operational process engaged in by a person, whether a worker or a customer, presents an array of opportunities for that person to commit avoidable mistakes which nullify the operation s beneficial potential. By designing a product or mass production system in such a way that these mistakes cannot be made, or essentially fool proofing something so that it can only be used correctly, it is possible to reduce or eliminate entirely the type of errors which can cumulatively cost companies millions of dollars per year. The Japanese have perfected this concept of specifically engineered fail safes through the widespread use of Poka Yoke, a term which is translated as resistance to errors by avoiding (yoker) errors resulting from inattention (poka) (Dudek Burlikowska Szewieczek, 2009). By recognizing the potential for defects in the performance of any process, and consciously redesigning that process in such a way as to remove the chance of that error occurring, it is possible to create systems that can only be operated in the intended fashion. The underlying philosophy and methodology of Poka Yoke was introduced by Dr. Shigeo Shingo in 1961 ¦ one of the engineers for Toyota Motor Corporation ¦ to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Description Of An Electrocardiogram, Or Ecg Or Ekg Introduction An Electrocardiogram, or ECG or EKG, is a recording of the hearts electrical activity as a graph over a period of time, as detected by electrodes attached to the outer surface of the skin and recorded by a device external of the body (Boundless). The graph of an ECG can identify various things initiated by the heart, such as its rate, rhythm, a decrease in blood flow, and a possible enlargement. For a healthy individual, a typical ECG shows the whole cardiac cycle or heart beat which includes a P wave (Atrial depolarization), a QRS complex (Ventricular depolarization), and a T wave (Ventricular repolarization). The ECG s first spike or P wave is triggered by the Sinoatrial node (SA node), which is also known as the pacemaker and the electrical impulse from the atria to the ventricles is conducted by the atrioventricular node (AV node). During each heart beat the heart muscle depolarizes, this is detected on the skin where the ECG electrodes are placed by the machine and then translated into a linear representation (Boundless). The resting membrane potential of a heart cell is 60mv, when an influx of positive ions enter the cell (NA+ and CA++) depolarization takes place causing the heart to contract. This action takes place during the peak of the P wave (Atria systole). The QRS complex represent when the left and right ventricles contract and depolarize, also called ventricular systole. This action normally takes place at the highest amplitude in the complex, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Difference Between A Pert And Gantt Chart Compare and contrast the information that one receives from a Gantt chart, versus that of a PERT diagram A significant piece of project management is organization. Both Pert and Gantt charts are essential tools that are utilized by project managers in creating a project schedule. Both types of charts offer tools for managers to examine projects through visualization, helping divide responsibilities into controllable parts. An important difference between a PERT chart and a Gantt chart is the way the information is presented. Gantt charts display information in the design of a bar chart. This representation helps show the percentage of work accomplished for each task. On the other hand, PERT shows data as a network model. Meaning that a PERT chart displays an earlier node from which tasks branch out. This helps project managers envision the arrangement of tasks. Together PERT and Gantt charts will show the tasks to be accomplished, but the charts highlight dissimilar parts. A Gantt chart s primary focus is on the ratio completion of each task, without indicating the connection that two tasks may have to each other. While PERT typically does not show the percentage completed, PERT employs a network model, which makes it is easy to see which tasks depend on each other, it typically does not show the percentage of completed tasks. George Babbitt, the main character in Lewis novel, viewed the world in the eyes of a businessman. He saw immigrants as a waste to society, business and the means to survive, and the ability to own the latest and greatest inventions as top priorities in his life. Babbitt was just the icon of the Republican viewpoint. Lewis probed into the Republican policies in order to write a character about them. Babbitt attempted a change, a way of rebelling against his mechanical lifestyle, which one could view as someone s break of the political system. It was too hard for him though, as his friends pressured him to join the Good Citizens League and end this crazy rebellion. His downfall inevitably came over his wife s operation, and he began to preach, the crimes of labor unions, the perils of immigration, and the delights of golf, morality, and bank accounts (Lewis 368) more than ever. Lewis hinted through that statement that the Good Citizens League was little more than a political club, or more specifically, an offshoot of the Republican Party itself. Once again, Babbitt reflects the party s actions and policies in what he speaks about, also saying a great deal about who was part of that party. If the party was like that over seventy five years ago, and many would consider such thoughts corrupt, the Republican Party surely must have changed over such a long time. In Anarchy, State, and Utopia (Nozick 1974), Nozick created the thought experiment The Experience Machine with which he attempts to challenge the idea of ethical hedonism (42). The Experience Machine is a thought experiment, in which a person is given the choice of entering a machine that would stimulate pleasure into a person s brain using a machine, and that the person could not distinguish the differences between the machine and reality, in some variations of the experiment, once a person enters the machine, that person cannot leave. Pros And Cons Of Water Privatization Rocky Santana Period 3 4/21/15 The Bad Effects of The Privatization of Water The privatization of water has its pros and cons, like the quality going down to save money, and like the poor not being able to get access to clean water. Massive layoffs could happen so the company could save money, this makes them under staffed. Rate increase can also occur in the company to increase profits. Water privatization in my opinion, has the cons out weighing the pros in the argument on whether it is good for the public, and the company itself. Citizens continue to raise such arguments in spite of the fact that they have no basis in law and the courts have repeatedly rejected their arguments as frivolous. Their motivation is usually monetary. Anti taxation groups used different arguments to gain followers, they all share one thing in common; they received substantial sentences in a federal prison for their activities. This is an issue of both personal and societal important to me as a youth mentor, future social worker, and concerned citizen. Since 2014, I have worked worked as a summer camp counselor of children aged five to 13 in my hometown of New Kensington. The summer camp is organized by a non profit to facilitate conflict resolution skills in children who are aggressive or anti social in school and other settings. These children have multiple odds stacked against them: race (most are African American), economic status, and unstable surrounding all contribute to their life experiences. I was taken aback when I discovered how many of the campers had an incarcerated mother, father, or both. Along with displaying aggressive behavior, most of the campers had difficulty bonding with their peers, caregivers, and camp counselors. In the fields of psychology and social work, these are textbook signs of insecure attachment. Much of my time as a camp counselor was spent working to foster acceptance and affection in children who often don t receive any at home. Beyond anecdotal evidence, the role of an absent mother in insecure attachments has been explored extensively by researchers. The Hero s Journey in it s entirety has seventeen stages or steps, but if boiled down can be described in three; the departure, the initiation, and the return (Monomyth Cycle). Each stage has several steps, but the cycle describes the hero starting in his initial state, encountering something to change him, and this his return as a changed person. Beowulf s victory over Grendel should be considered as crossing of the first threshold . Prior to his victory, Beowulf had only triumphed over man. This victory over monster provides him with more (personal) glory, and causes a bit of a dip into the next major step of the Hero s Journey, the initiation. Beowulf is interesting in that he combines two distinct events into the initiation stage of the hero. The appointment as king is the obvious choice for pinpointing the exact point of the story in which the hero undergoes the greatest change, but really it is the entire time from after Grendel s death to when Beowulf actually becomes king. His core character changes, a maturation from warrior to leader possible only because of his trial and ability to overcome hardship and challenge. The seeds of a true leader are planted however, and the reader begins to see the change from his focus on himself and his glory, to that of his people.
