An Ode To The User-Friendly Pencil
Old school conquers new school: A personal response to An Ode to the User Friendly Pencil
Technology is upgrading itself and is, perhaps, taking over the world. From virtual reality to
supercomputers, people are depending more on technology in their everyday lives, but is it necessary?
Technology has reached the point where Samsung phones are becoming C4 explosives and 4K
televisions do not display 4K quality. In An Ode to the User Friendly Pencil by Bonnie Laing, she
explains how a simple pencil that we use in our everyday lives is better than a complex computer that
is technologically advanced, and through her ironic tone and economic line of reasoning, she gets that
message across to her readers which I firmly agree on. In her essay, she utilizes irony to add a
sarcastic tone in her essay, making the essay more enjoyable for readers to read. An example of this is
the use of computer jargon to explain why the pencil is the better tool. Laing states how the software
of a pencil is both cheap and simple (332) and how you can render it ... Show more content on

An example of that is how she fought and wrestled with [her] microchips (Laing, 332), which is an
example of personification. As we all know, a computer does not have human traits nor can it wrestle
with the user like WWE; however, Laing is explaining how it gets more complicated the more you use
a computer, and I agree with that. A computer is not smart; instead, it is the exact opposite. This is
because without a user, a computer is just a sitting duck without the proper programming. It needs to
be programmed to perform certain tasks or it needs a user to give it something to do in order to be
useful, which is what software engineers do for a living. From taking computer science, I can tell you
it is not an easy task, but rather, a hardworking one since we wrestle with the OS rather than the

Police Community Review Sample
Community Review I am from an middle class community located in Flossmoor, IL just outside of
Indiana where all the major casinos in an upper class area, with average to above average sized homes.
The average income is roughly around $150,000 and there is a very diverse group of family makeups
from the working single professional to large families. The community has a number of gated
subdivisions however, the price is well out of reach for the average household in the area. There is a
high school (Homewood/Flossmoor) about two miles down the road from my current development
and security there is what I would call above average for a high school, police patrols in the parking
lot and over five security individuals roaming the halls. The police ... Show more content on

I have chosen the aforementioned neighbor s house from above. External Casing The first thing that I
have noticed is the garage door is always opening, they are always sitting there with the door half
cracked smoking cigarettes. The house is a sprawling colonial type home and there is a boyfriend and
girlfriend that live there together with no visible signs of children, just a Chihuahua. The blinds are
always drawn and they have mature landscaping in the front yard which provides coverage for the
lower windows. I know almost nothing about the layout of the property inside because every plot and
interior is different in my neighborhood. I took a good look at the outside of the house as well as their
point of entry in the back and side of the house. I have called the police and together we are
monitoring the activity of the house. I continue to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity while
also trying to maintain a friendly attitude towards them, I am worried about my personal belonging

* We wanted to check the initiative taken by the Consumer s to fight against malpractices and its
effects?
* Does education level of people make them more aware about the unfair trade practices going in the
consumer market?
* Are people aware about consumer courts and consumer protection acts?
* Do people take the initiative to go ahead and fight against, raise voice against these malpractices?
Through our research we will try to find out all the above objectives and come to a conclusion
whether the steps and actions implemented by the government to raise the level of consumer
awareness among the masses is affective or not?
Limitations of the research * The project is not purely based on primary information but includes a lot
of information obtained from various sources.
* The sample size is small compared to the population of our country.
* The project has approximately 50% of primary data and rest of the data is secondary.
* The project is based on human assumptions and their self thinking as different persons thinking may
differ.
Consumer vs. Customer

Themes Explored in Purple Hibiscus
1) Five major issues explored in purple hibiscus are; domestic violence, oppression, religion,
education and love.
2a) Adichie uses a narrative point of view to explore the theme of domestic violence. The book is
narrated in the first person by a 15 year old who is directly affected by domestic violence. Because of
her young age she is quiet honest and this allows her to paint a great picture to the audience of the
brutal abuse that Eugene bestows upon his family. This is as a result of her sensitive, intelligent and
observant nature.
2b) Oppression is explored through narrative point of view. Adichie uses the point of view of Kambili
to show the audience how oppressed the country is not only in the Achike household but the whole of

Kambili sees the sips of scorching tea from her father as a representation of his love, this love is very
painful. Amadi s love on the other hand is not the painful kind of love but instead a joyous one.
4a) Adichie uses setting to explore domestic violence. Domestic violence is present in the Achike
household. This setting is the only setting in the entire book where domestic violence is present.
Adichie uses a variety of things and rooms within this setting to bring out domestic violence some
examples are the figurines, Eugene and Beatrice s room and the bathroom.
4b) the entire setting of Nigeria brings out the theme of oppression especially political oppression. All
of Nigeria is suffering as a result of the political oppression, including Abba Town, Enugu and Ifeoma
s village. The road setting also shows political oppression, especially when persons are stopped and
searched by the military for no good reason.
4c) Religion is explored through setting, Adichie uses Aunty Ifeoma s home to teach Kambili things
about religion different that she had been taught be her father. It was in Aunty Ifeoma s house that
Kambili understood her grandfather s traditionalist religion and was able to make a link between
Catholicism and Traditionalist.
4d) A setting used to explore education is Aunty Ifeoma s home. Aunty Ifeoma in her home speaks of
the many young girls in the school who get married then allow their husbands to own them and their
degrees.

The Regency Society During The Regency Period
During the Regency society, what made a man a true gentleman is still a confusing matter for many
Austenesque and Regency readers (Grace). Many of the 19th century occupations have vanished
because of changes in taste, socials customs, and technological advances (Pool 235). While some of
the men during the Regency period were extremely wealthy, there were others that faced financial
hardships (Grace). Most of time, the road of apprenticeship often led to a successful life and good
fortune (Pool 240). The most gentlemanly professions during the Regency period were the clergymen,
lawyers, and army officers.
Many of the men during the Regency period that desired to keep their status as a gentleman often went
into a church profession (Grace). Many gentlemen that were OxBridge graduates and younger
brothers entered the clergy (Ray 189). For many families that had a steady, guaranteed income, the
church was a popular option for them (Grace). There were two different types of clergyman, vicar and
curate. While being a clergyman required no strenuous physical labor, it did require a Honors degree
either from Oxford or Cambridge (Grace; Ray 189). For the most part, the gentry class were the only
ones that could actually afford a degree from Oxford or Cambridge to become a clergyman (Ray 189).
Another job opportunity in the church included the priest. The priests during this time were respected
by society mostly because of their association with the church (Ray 189). In the novel,

Dawson Mcallister Gender Stereotypes
Gender Stereotypes The issue of gender stereotypes is a complex one. When people think about this
problem, they think that men and women have to have certain roles in society. The gender stereotype
that women are more emotional than men is a very common gender stereotype that is a problem in our
society. This stereotype was most common around 1952, yet the stereotype still occurs today through
the media. Judging a women to be the more emotional gender is bad for society because it shapes the
woman into being that stereotype. Even though the stereotype that women are more emotional than
men is often portrayed through society and the media, men are just as emotional as women. In
particular, men can get more emotional than women after a breakup. ... Show more content on

This stereotype is presented in The Hopeline by Dawson McAllister who writes about how and why
women are more emotional than men. The article states, Women are more prone to talk about what
they are thinking and feeling, and to demonstrate how they are feeling with their tears, facial
expressions, hand gestures, and body language (McAllister 8). After taking time to analyze the
evidence, McAllister is false because even though women often show their emotions, men are more
emotional deep down, but are not willing to show it. According to Elite Daily by Paul Hudson, he
states that, In this study, conducted by neurologists at Mindlab, men are actually much more sensitive
than women when it comes to being presented with emotional stimuli... Boys are taught to be ashamed
of the emotions that they experience, so they grow into men who are both emotional confused and in
denial... Don t cry. Don t pout. Don t complain Be a man an emotionless, stubborn man (Hudson 13).
As can be seen in the evidence, men have a bigger reaction to stimuli. Furthermore, while men are
taught to hide their feelings, women are taught to share their emotions with others, and this causes
men to tend to be more emotional. In conclusion, men are just as, sometimes more, emotional than
women, but they hide their emotions

The Influence Of Immigration To The United States
The United States is both a nation of and built by immigrants. The former implies that the golden door
that Emma Lazarus spoke of is responsible for the fabric of American society while the latter suggests
that the nation s immigrants contributed to the United States rise to global leadership. During a
conference at Princeton University on Military Man Power and American Policy in 1942, Dr. Edward
Mead Earle stated that [m]an power is a definite factor in the world balance of power, and, what is
more important, it is a constantly changing factor...the nature of these changes and their probable
effect...should be thoroughly understood in order that the national interest may be safeguarded...
Today, the Correlates of War project applies this same logic in explaining the factors that indicate
national power. Three of those indicators military personnel, urban population, and total population
are directly influenced by immigration. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During World War II, European immigrants and new Americans of different ethnicities would learn to
work together for a common cause, forging a new American identity. The All Volunteer Army (AVA)
has struggled to incorporate two significant immigrant populations into its ranks, the Mexicans and the
Chinese, despite their long history of immigration to the United States. This demonstrated that the
golden door was open for some and closed to others. This monograph argues that the United States
should adopt a more open immigration policy, resulting in concomitant changes to Army enlistment
policy and greater access to a recruiting pool of new

Real And Nominal Gdp Forecast
Real and Nominal GDP Forecasts Taking on account the historical data provided in the forecasts
developed by our Economic Research Group, we compared this year s forecasts with the performance
of the economy in the past using gross domestic product. Gross domestic product, measures the
monetary value of final goods and services that is, those that are bought by the final user produced in a
country in a given period of time (say a quarter or a year) according to the International Monetary
Fund. Based on this comparison, we determined that there has been a steady increase in gross
domestic product (GDP) in terms of Current Dollars, but there is a fluctuation between quarters under
Chained Dollars GDP. Current Dollars, also known as Nominal GDP, accounts for inflation changes
and uses current market prices while Chained Dollars, known as Real GDP, remove the effects of
inflation in its calculation and use prices from a base year. Using this data, we can project the real
growth rate for 2006 will decrease 2.56% quarterly, and 10.25% within the year, shown in Exhibit 2b.
We calculate the average growth rate using Real GDP because in the United States the growth rate that
the BEA reports is a quarter on quarter growth rate, which is the growth in real GDP from one quarter
to the next, according to The Motley Fool. These percentages tell us that there has been a significant
drop in real growth rates due to consumer confidence falling for the second month straight.

Patients With Newly Diagnosed Hypothyroidism And Their...
Patient education. FNP needs to educate patients with newly diagnosed hypothyroidism and their
caregiver if necessary in regards to its disease process, side effect of medications, importance of
compliance and follow up. Hypothyroidism is often a lifelong condition and therefore it is important
to counsel the patient at the point of diagnosis (Roe, 2015). Taking L thyroxine is the main treatment
mechanism; therefore, medication compliance is the one of the most important part in education. The
clinical effect of L thyroxine may include normalizing abnormalities associated with hypothyroidism.
Optimal treatment of hypothyroidism may lead to improvement of various symptoms. In
neuropsychological aspect, patients may show improved motor skills, myopathy and depression. With
treatment, patient s overall energy level may enhance constipation symptoms may improve and weight
problem may lessen if thyroid balance was a main contributor. It has been shown that treatment of
hypothyroidism would also improve lipid profiles in patients (Roe, 2015).
Longstanding hypothyroidism is accompanied by impaired function of nearly all organs and tissues,
and the clinical response to replacement therapy may continue for months. Normally, L thyroxine
administration improves clinical symptoms associated with hypothyroidism without adverse effects.
Rare cases of intolerance which may be caused by reaction to tablet colors or other constituents have
been report (Garber, 2012).

Zika Virus And Yellow Fever
If you haven t heard of the Zika virus by now, you will be hearing about it soon because of the
attention it has recently gained. The Zika virus is an infection that is similar to the West Nile virus and
yellow fever. The virus was discovered in Uganda in 1947, and is common in African and Asian
countries. It only recently was discovered to have spread to Brazil and the Western Hemisphere in
2015. Zika was a rare tropical disease with mild symptoms when it was discovered. It takes its name
from the Zika forest in Uganda where it was first identified by scientists. Zika is spread by
mosquitoes, which transmits the disease when it bites a person infected with Zika, then bites another

Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institutes for Allergies and Infectious Diseases said there will
be some unfortunate cases but nothing like the magnitude that the poor Brazilians are going through.
So far, there have been about 20 cases in the United States, according to Fauci. All of those patients
had traveled abroad to Brazil or other affected areas. The disease has not spread beyond those
travelers. There are several reasons for believing the spread of Zika in the United States will be much
more limited than in Brazil. First, a similar virus, dengue, has never spread much in the United States.
Over the years, nearly all cases have been among travelers, with transmission within the United States
happening only rarely. Experts believe cooler weather is a big part of the reason, as the mosquitoes
that spread viruses such as dengue and Zika prefer hotter climates. Right now, only the Centers for
Control Disease and a handful of state health departments can test for the virus, which is inefficient
and time consuming. Other teams have been working in various countries to develop a vaccine against

Analysis Of Louise Erdrich s A Healthy Way Essay
Louise Erdrich s Tracks occurs in the 1910s, in the midst of anti Native racism and government
sanctioned Indian boarding schools. The characters in Tracks must reconcile with their Native
American culture while also facing the constant threat to their culture. The characters in Tracks
attempt to understand and accept their cultural identities in a country doomed with racial tensions.
Napush is an example of a character who is able to positively accept his Native American identity in a
healthy way, while Pauline is an example of a character who is unable to accept her Native American
identity and reacts negatively to it. Nanapush and Pauline both come to terms with the anti Native
racism they encounter in drastically different ways. On one hand, Nanapush does not feel tempted by
the white culture that surrounds him. He actively attempts to embrace his Ojibwe identity, despite the
white culture that surrounds him. He can see the value in preserving his Native American heritage. In
contrast, Pauline actively rejects her Ojibwe identity in favor of attempting to create a new, white
identity for herself. She uses her highly religious nature to try and separate herself from her Native
American identity.
The racism and anti Native culture that surrounds Pauline eventually breaks her down and makes her
believe that she must become white. She even starts to believe that she must kill her inner Native
identity so that she can finally be accepted as a member of the white community.

The Role Of Women In Pompeiian Society
Before uniting the entire Pompeiian society, people first had to come to terms with other individuals
with the same economic standing as themselves. Banquets served as perfect opportunities for
Pompeiians to meet and invoke conversation with people of their same class and status. When
Pompeiians hosted banquets, they would invite people of similar, or the same economic status.
Banquets gave people a chance to discuss news, or any other topic they wished to talk about with
other Pompeiians who they did not see daily. This also served as a way to introduce people to new
ideas and beliefs. Banquets were also opportunities for hosts to flaunt their wealth and luxurious

Everyone did not necessarily have to have the same beliefs, but rather respect and be able to civilly

s two most desirable and hard to achieve positions in office: the duoviri and aediles. The duoviri had a
leadership role, and would perform tasks such as conducting the census, while the aediles would plan
gladiator and animal fights, and had more simple tasks such as overseeing the public baths and
sanitary levels of the streets of Pompeii. These simple roles that were done by the aediles helped
promote unity in Pompeii since they helped people gather in a common area. Since elections were

other. When discussing, they could be open to other opposing viewpoints, and take these opinions into

the citizens of Pompeii had to vote for candidates that they thought would fit the position. Even this

Descriptive Essay About Having A Dog
At the young age of 14, I fell in love for the first time. Although not ideal, he was white, covered with
brown spots and innocent eyes; a young Chihuahua. Max and I came into each other s lives on
October 20, 2013, when my older brother told me that a dog was coming home soon. Although I was
afraid of dogs, having previously been bit by one, I was oddly excited, and kept glancing at my phone
and at the window for the arrival of the new member to our family. Once the duo arrived, my whole
life would change. As my brother placed the small creature down, he came running towards me with
his small wagging tale and innocent eyes. Once he began to lick my feet I knew I was in love. Our
family settled on the name Max, but I called him Marco, and from then on I would treat Marco as if he
was my true blood brother. This one lone puppy, taught me responsibility, compassion, and grief for
others, as no other person has ever made me feel.
Dogs are known for their gentle souls and friendliness, but they also teach humans unexpected
lessons; such is the same for Marco and my family. Having a dog is no easy task, from the beginning
Max created the label of being a handful. When my cousin first picked him up, he began to urinate on
her which generated a lot of laughter and disgust at the same time. I was tasked with a lot of chores

Essay about Comparing Islam and Judaism s Views on Euthanasia
Comparing Islam and Judaism s Views on Euthanasia
Euthanasia gained a legal foothold in Holland. It went to the ballot box in two states in America but
was defeated. Its lobby is getting more active. Islam and Judaism have definite views on euthanasia.
The principle regarding the sanctity of human life implies that human life is immeasurable, that there
is no difference between a healthy person and a physically or mentally impaired person. Likewise, the
life expectancy of a patient is immaterial. The life of a human being, whether long or short, is treated
equally. Consequently, active euthanasia is absolutely prohibited even if requested by the patient.

We humans have no real idea how life comes into being, our brains are not complex enough to
understand life, and therefore we should not mess around with it. Islam quite clearly says that only
God has the divine right to take life, as it is he who gave it to us in the first place.
Euthanasia may be known as mercy killing but from the point of a Muslim this does not exist. Mercy
killing sounds as if a life is being taken as it is the only and best option in a certain situation. Even if a
person has an incurable disease, Islam teaches us to make that persons last days on Earth as
comfortable as you can. We should fulfill all the wishes of that person, and we should try and ease the
pain as much as we can. Euthanasia is never an option!
Islam teaches us that we are only in this world for a limited period. This life is only a blink of an eye
compared to the hereafter. This life is a test, and if we pass it we go to heaven. All the illnesses that we
encounter are part of this test, and most of all it is a test of our faith. If our faith is strong then we
should have the strength to have faith in God and we should eventually overcome it. In Islam we
believe that whatever happens, even if it is bad, happens for the best. It is part of our destiny, it is
meant to happen, and it is part of God s plan. Islam also teaches

Death Is The Middle Child Of Parents Edward And Emily...
Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. She was the middle
child of parents Edward and Emily Norcross Dickinson. Young Emily Dickinson s early childhood
consisted of attending school, reading books, taking part in church activities, and learning to sing and
play the piano. Her formal schooling was phenomenal for girls in the early 19th century, though not
unusual for girls in Amherst. After spending some time in Amherst district school, she attended
Amherst Academy for about 7 years before entering Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount
Holyoke College) in 1847. Dickinson s early years were not without distress. Deaths of friends and
relatives, including her young cousin Sophia Holland, prompted questions about death and
immortality. Death happens to be a recurring theme in Dickinson s poetry. Although this is the case,
no two poems have exactly the same understanding of death, however. Death is sometimes
frightening, lenient and gentle, or simply inevitable. The intent of this paper is to analyze the
persistent theme of death in Dickinson s poetry and how it is portrayed in some of her most well
known pieces. These select few poems will include I like a look of Agony , I heard a Fly buzz when I
died and Because I could not stop for Death. As Dickinson got older, her personal life went through a
tremendous change. She came into her own as an artist during a short but intense period that scholars
estimate ranged from 1858 1865. These

Symbolism In Ernest Hemingway s A Farewell To Arms
World War I began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Ernest Hemingway
s novel, A Farewell to Arms, follows the life of the Italian Speaking, American Frederic Henry as he
joins the war on behalf of the Italians, is injured by a bombshell, and flees after his recovery. In his
most popular novel, A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway utilizes the motif of whorehouses, sporadic
syntax during Henry s rampant drunkenness, and understatement when Henry encounters death to
illustrate how war morally decays the ordinary man.
Throughout A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway exemplifies the purpose of whorehouses as a distraction
for the soldiers and the role of women in times of war. In the beginning, the motif of whorehouses is ...

By implementing a confusing syntax during Henry s inebriated state, Hemingway reveals how the war
affects the morality of Henry s mind. After his hospitalization from an explosion, Henry s friends
bring him alcohol as a get well present. Henry has a drink and argues about Rome with Rinaldi in his
drunken state: Roma is feminine, said Rinaldi. It cannot be the father. Who is the father, then, the Holy
Ghost? Don t blas pheme. I wasn t blaspheming, I was asking for information. You are drunk, baby.
Who made me drunk? I made you drunk because I love you and because America is in the war.
(Hemingway 71)
Through this ambiguous sentence structure, it is difficult to tell who says, comments, or argues with
who. By utilizing this perplexing syntax Hemingway shows how being drunk affects Henry s state of
mind. Henry is unable to tell right from wrong, or if the comment made is actually blasphemy or not.
Henry s mindstate is altered, as evident by Hemingway s use of muddled syntax, as a result of the
alcohol; in addition, Henry only got drunk because he was given alcohol after his injuries in the war.
Thus, the war morally decayed Henry s mind through alcohol to the point of not being able to discern

Pros Of Captain Doregos
The project s main focus is on the research question HOW ARE SALES OF CAPTAIN DOREGOS
AFFECTED BY ITS LOCATION AT THE MASERU TAXI RANK? The research was conducted

presented in a form of a bar charts, after which analysis was made from the presented data. The
obtained data which was supported by some sources was the basis of my argument concerning the
research question. The conclusion based on the findings was then made with the necessary suggestions

A Brief Look at Poliomyelitis
INTRODUCTION Poliomyelitis is often called polio, this polio is an acute infectious disease caused
by a virus which can spread from person to person via the fecal oral route. The term poliomyelitis
means inflammation of the spinal cord of the grey matter. In severe poliomyelitis infection it can
expand to the brainstem. Polio is so contagious that anyone living with a person that is recently
affected can spread the virus for weeks in their feces. It invades the nervous system and spread within
hours. Poliomyelitis causes infection with a member of the genus called the enterovirus which is
known as the poliovirus. It belongs to a group of Ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses which affects the
gastrointestinal tract especially the intestine and the oropharynx. Its structure is very simple,
composed of a single positive sense RNA genome which is enclosed in a protein shell called the
capsid. The capsid apart from protecting the virus genetic material, it capsid protein also make the
polio virus to infect some certain types of cells. There are three serotypes of poliovirus that have been
identified; it includes the poliovirus type 1, poliovirus type of 2 and poliovirus 3. They all look similar
but have a small different structure in its capsid protein. The poliovirus type 1 is the one that causes
most of the disease and is mostly associated with paralysis. Poliomyelitis can come in two ways of
polio infection .There is a minor illness which does not involve the Central

Autism And Its Effects On Children Essay
In the United States 1 in 68 births results in an Autism diagnosis (Autism Society). In this time period,
at the moment, there are new medical discoveries every day. These breakthroughs range from new
diseases prevention methods, to new cures for previously terminal illnesses. So, because our society is
constantly changing, evolving, and improving, it is absolutely necessary to keep up with the awareness
of these new discoveries. One disorder that has existed for years, but has recently gained a lot of
awareness is Autism. Autism is defined as a disorder in brain development that ultimately affects its
victims everyday social interaction (Autismspeaks.org) . Signs and symptoms of Autism are usually
shown in early childhood, and are easily detected by parents, if they are aware. However, if a parent or
guardian notices any signs, they should take action immediately. How fast they take action in this
situation could make or break the future of their child. Many symptoms have been connected to
autism, and they are seen the best in these areas; behavior, social skills, and speech. A child s guardian
can observe these symptoms in these areas to further increase the accuracy of the diagnosis. The
average adult lacks the professional training that psychologists and behaviourists have, so they may
only be able to zero in on high frequency behavior (Zwaigenbaum 2008). Children with autism tend to
act out more than their peers in school or daycare and are more prone to frequent

Organizational Structure
Organizational Structure
Google is one of the largest and well known companies in the technology industry. They have been
known for their search engine for many years now. Also, Google has expanded their business into
several other areas in technology from smart phones, tablets, android, and business software. Google s
search engine is known for reliably getting its users the information they want. One unique aspect that
Google has is its business organizational structure is that it is flat and formed up into project teams,
unlike most businesses.
Google has an organizational structure which is different from most companies. It is made up of many
stockholders like most companies, however, the founders Sergey ... Show more content on

You can be serious without a suit. Great just is not good enough. These ten principles are a much laid
back atmosphere, not top down, approach to the structure of a company. However, this is the way Brin
and Page want Google to be organized and works well for the company. This is a very democratic and
simple way to design a company.
The way Google has structured its management and divided the stock has put Brin and Page in a
position to which they will be able to retain most of the power of the company aside from
stockholders, whereas management will remain flat under them. The questions that the other
stockholders have about the way the company is structured will not have an effect on the future of
Google. Stockholders will have very little say in the decisions of how to run the company.
Google faces a large amount of competition in the technology industry, but with their management
style believe that they can keep the best and brightest people. This is a company believes in teamwork
and being able to keep everyone happy, not just the customers. This will enable them to keep workers
who enjoy their jobs and want to put their full effort into making Google the best company in tech.
Brin and Page are very determined to not only keep up with other companies in the industry but also
to surpass them in all areas of technology that Google competes in. However, Brin does believe that a
company tends to self destruct when they are obsessed with their competition.

Jeremiah Project Analysis
During the summer before my senior year, I applied to be in a performance group called the Jeremiah
Project during the Montreat Youth Conference. I was selected along with seventeen other people to be
in the group, which is called the Jeremiah Project. Throughout the week long conference, I worked to
lead the worship sessions by writing and performing in interpretations of biblical stories, reading
liturgy, and sharing personal stories. The stories shared adhered to the daily theme. The themes ranged
from bodily insecurity, to feeling exiled, to a time when we saw God s light in our lives. I made the
decision not to share my story with the conference as a whole that week. Even before the testimonies
were shared, hearing snippets of lifetime events from the other members of the Jeremiah Project told
me that I should use my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have a flair for performing or just speaking to large groups. Still, I listened to six of my peers
courageously share their stories publicly and I was amazed at what I heard. The anecdotes of my new
friends recounted abuse, eating disorders, and deaths of friends and family members. There was not a
dry eye in the auditorium on the morning that one girl, only a sophomore in high school, told the
conference that her mother had left her and her siblings on the streets when she was only four years
old. Jeremiah Project was unique because we were able to come together with those who contributed
their stories for a small group time after morning and before evening worship each day. By Thursday,
we had learned that because of testimonies, skits, and liturgy that we all wrote and participated in,
several attendees at the conference had reached out for help in their dark circumstances of drug and
alcohol abuse, self harm, and abusive

A Note On Uniform Resource Locator
A URL (Uniform Resource Locator, previously Universal Resource Locator) is the unique address for
a file that is accessible on the Internet. Such a file might be any Web (HTML) page, an image file, or a
program such as a common gateway interface application or Java applet. A common way to get to a
web site is to enter the URL of its home page file in web browser s address line. However, any file
within that web site can also be specified with a unique URL. So the web pages of any website are
identified by the URL. It contains the name of the protocol to be used to access the file resource, a
domain name that identifies a specific computer on the Internet, and a pathname, a hierarchical
description that specifies the location of a file in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
E.g. www.google.com. A server provides services in the name of the host, but hosts and servers do not
have a one to one mapping. Sometimes, a port number can also follow host names. Well known port
numbers for a service are normally omitted from the URL. Most servers use the well known port
numbers for HTTP and HTTPS, so most HTTP URLs omit the port number. The hostname is further
subdivided into following
a. www (World Wide Web) It means that resource being asked for using the website address resides in
the World Wide Web ( Internet)
b. Domain name / Resource Owner The registered domain name comes here.
c. Domain extension It is the suffix at the end of a web address, like .com or .net. It is used to identify
the nature of website. .com means that website is of commercial nature. For example .org for
organization website, .edu for educational institutes, .gov for government website.
3. The Path The path identifies the specific resource in the host that the web client wants to access. For
example, http://www.sample.com/htp/index.html.
4. The Query String If a query string is used, it follows the path component, and provides a string of
information that the resource can use for some purpose. The query string is usually a string of name
and value pairs; for example, term=analytics in www.informationsite.com/latestinfosearch?

lawful justification. Two elements must be satisfied before the act of Tobias can be established as false
imprisonment. 1.Positive, voluntary conduct, that directly, intentionally and totally deprived Plaintiff

damages maybe awarded. Michael v Franklin Introduction Michael, brother of Lindsay went to the
nursery to demand Franklin to remove the video of his sister that he posted online. Michael was
plotting a plant and crouched down. Franklin had his back to Michael and was oblivious of his
presence. In order to get his attention, Michael poked him hard from the back leading to Franklin

Important Factors to Remember when Giving a Speech
Back in my high school in Malaysia, I was not really a good speaker. I rarely practiced speaking in
English because I used my national language, Malay, most of the times in most of the situations. After
getting a pretty decent result for my final examination in high school, I was offered by my government
to further my study in United States. During the preparation before flying to the United States, I
thought that I was very lucky to be offered a scholarship to the country that uses English as its native
language because I have taken English classes so language is no longer a problem. I thought that if I
could excel in writing, so I could speak fluently. After completing my preparation, I flew to the United
States in August 2013. Everything was nice until the Fall 2013 started. My life was so dull. I felt like I
was all alone. I failed to make friends because I had communication problem. Even though I was in
101C class at that time, I still could not improve my communication skill as the class did not require
the students much to communicate with the other students. However, things changed after I got into
English 150 class. My communication skill gets better day to day and now I am able to deliver a
speech. As the time passed, I have delivered more than 2 speeches and I feel confident now to talk. In
this essay, I want to reflect what I have learnt from my speech for the assignment 4 (Exploring a

According to Steve Skinner: Community capacity building: activities, resources and support that
strengthen the skills, abilities and confidence of people and community groups to take effective action
and leading roles in the development of communities (Skinner, 2006)
In a wider concept it would mean engaging individuals or groups within the community to take
advantage of available resources to change and improve their life and make the place they live in
better and more hospitable.
It seems necessary for a successful process of capacity building to identify the needs and problems,
which should be tackled by such actions, and got as many people and organizations as possible

For successful and meaningful process the authorities and organizations involved should follow the

Essay on The Choosing Of A Landfill Site
The Choosing of a Landfill Site
There is currently much debate on the desirability of landfilling particular wastes, the practicability of
alternatives such as waste minimisation or pre treatment, the extent of waste pre treatment required,
and of the most appropriate landfilling strategies for the final residues. This debate is likely to
stimulate significant developments in landfilling methods during the next decade. Current and
proposed landfill techniques are described in this information sheet.
Types of landfill
Landfill techniques are dependent upon both the type of waste and the landfill management strategy. A
commonly used classification of landfills, according to waste type only, is described below, together
with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This strategy is the most commonly used for nuclear wastes and hazardous wastes. It is also used in
some countries for MSW and other non hazardous but polluting wastes.
B) Containment and collection of leachate
Inflow of water is controlled but not prevented entirely, and leakage is minimised or prevented, by a
low permeability basal liner and by removal of leachate. This is the most common strategy currently
for MSW landfills in developed countries. The duration of a pollution risk is dependent on the rate of
water flow through the wastes. Because it requires active leachate management there is currently
much interest in accelerated leaching to shorten this timescale from what could be centuries to just a
few decades.
C) Controlled contaminant release
The top cover and basal liner are designed and constructed to allow generation and leakage of leachate
at a calculated, controlled rate. An environmental assessment is always necessary to that the impact of
the emitted leachate is acceptable. No active leachate control measures are used. Such sites are only
suitable in certain locations and for certain wastes. A typical example would be a landfill in a coastal
location, receiving an inorganic waste such as bottom ash from MSW incineration.
D) Unrestricted contaminant release
No control is exerted over either the inflow or the outflow of water.

Social Movements Essay
Social Movements
Social movements require a fairly complex and multi dimensional paradigm in order to adequately
explain the multiplicity of factors that contribute to their development and sustenance. Like both
McAdam and Costain, I believe that the political process model is a much more appropriate theory for
social movements than either the classical model (with its emphasis on psychology) or the resource
mobilization model (with its ultra capitalistic approach to all socio political interactions). Indeed,
unlike the classical and resource mobilization theories, the political process model incorporates a
number of different factors, making it significantly more realistic and versatile. Both McAdam and
Costain analyze a set of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
288). But what exactly constitutes this structure of political opportunity?
Costain argues that movements only emerge when the federal government becomes more favorable
and supportive towards the members and goals of the movement. Thus, according to Costain, the mild
support of the government was instrumental in the psychological preparation of the movement s
members; a favorable government encouraged women to realize that there was a possible political
solution to their discontent. In this way, at the base of every successful social movement, Costain
establishes a prerequisite of an increasingly favorable government (that spurs the psychological state
necessary for a large scale social movement). Thus, the government indirectly influences the
formation of the social movement, and the social movement then pressures its (oftentimes reluctant)
supporter to pass legislative or protective action. In Costain s model, the government is the key figure
in both the formation and the success of the social movement.
While the government clearly plays an important role in almost every stage of the formation and
proliferation of a social movement, I do not think that it is nearly so crucial to the birth of social
movements. Indeed, I find Costain s emphasis on government a sort of regression to the earlier elitist
theories concerning the resources necessary for the success of a social movement. The national
government is

Shawshank Redemption Behaviorism
The book Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption shows the stretch of behaviorism. It explored
how being separated from something for a long time can affect the instincts of the individual. In the
story, when prisoners get out they are confused, feel unsafe, and think about commiting a crime just to
get back into prison. This story shows how being rewarded and being punished makes the individual
and makes an identity. Behaviorism is the idea that your behavior is determined by punishment or
reward. In Shawshank this is an important theme as it shows how the prisoners change and adapt in
prison. Prisoners get so used to prison life, that when they leave it is impossible for them to fit in. For
example, Brooks was in prison for about 50 years and when he got paroled he began crying as he was
leaving the prison. Brooks was the librarian in prison and held an important role compared to other
prisoners. He didn t last very long and died within six months outside of prison; Brooks helped raise a
crow and as soon Brooks left, the crow died. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

to the ones he has seen in the past before he was in prison. I had no idea of how fast things moved on

about how women dress differently and show a lot of skin. Red talks about how he has a habit of
going to the restroom twenty five after the hour and asking his boss. Despite the fact that he no longer
needs to ask for permission it s something he is used to. Red talks about how he thinks of committing
a crime just to go to prison where he feels safe. The fact that he doesn t feel safe outside is saying
something that long term prison sentences affects the individual to a point where prison is all they

Definition Of Professionalism
Professionalism can be defined as the skills expected from someone that was trained to perform a
certain job or duty. Personally, I agree with this simple description, but at the same time I believe that
professionalism is a much more complex characteristic. There is a difference between being a
professional and be professional. Nowadays, most of us, students, are looking forward to obtain a
degree in order to be qualified for a certain type of job. In other words, the main goal of students is to
become professionals in a particular area. Become a professional it is not only related to college and
the learning process, it is related to the development and improvement of one s abilities. For instance,
when applying the learned skills in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the way in that a person is able to implement those skills is what I consider professionalism.
It is not only about the abilities or knowledge that a person might have, but rather about the behavior
and the values behind those abilities. Professionalism is a characteristic that needs to be earned,
practiced and improved every day. There are many factors that need to be taken in consideration when
defining professionalism. For example, someone might be an expert in nursing sciences, but could
also steal or misuse drugs from a hospital, or not provide an empathetic care for its patient. Being
professional involves successfully executing those skills and abilities learned, but always in an honest
and acknowledgeable way. Professionalism means to show a positive and leading conduct, avoid
mistakes, solve difficulties, be responsible and to follow the rules. Also, it is important to make a
division between the professional and the personal setting. For instance, a person shouldn t do things
in order to obtain a personal benefit, such as hiring a close member of the family if that person is not
qualified for the

  • 2. An Ode To The User-Friendly Pencil Old school conquers new school: A personal response to An Ode to the User Friendly Pencil Technology is upgrading itself and is, perhaps, taking over the world. From virtual reality to supercomputers, people are depending more on technology in their everyday lives, but is it necessary? Technology has reached the point where Samsung phones are becoming C4 explosives and 4K televisions do not display 4K quality. In An Ode to the User Friendly Pencil by Bonnie Laing, she explains how a simple pencil that we use in our everyday lives is better than a complex computer that is technologically advanced, and through her ironic tone and economic line of reasoning, she gets that message across to her readers which I firmly agree on. In her essay, she utilizes irony to add a sarcastic tone in her essay, making the essay more enjoyable for readers to read. An example of this is the use of computer jargon to explain why the pencil is the better tool. Laing states how the software of a pencil is both cheap and simple (332) and how you can render it ... A computer is not smart; instead, it is the exact opposite. This is because without a user, a computer is just a sitting duck without the proper programming. It needs to be programmed to perform certain tasks or it needs a user to give it something to do in order to be useful, which is what software engineers do for a living. From taking computer science, I can tell you it is not an easy task, but rather, a hardworking one since we wrestle with the OS rather than the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Regency Society During The Regency Period During the Regency society, what made a man a true gentleman is still a confusing matter for many Austenesque and Regency readers (Grace). Many of the 19th century occupations have vanished because of changes in taste, socials customs, and technological advances (Pool 235). While some of the men during the Regency period were extremely wealthy, there were others that faced financial hardships (Grace). Most of time, the road of apprenticeship often led to a successful life and good fortune (Pool 240). The most gentlemanly professions during the Regency period were the clergymen, lawyers, and army officers. Many of the men during the Regency period that desired to keep their status as a gentleman often went into a church profession (Grace). Many gentlemen that were OxBridge graduates and younger brothers entered the clergy (Ray 189). For many families that had a steady, guaranteed income, the church was a popular option for them (Grace). There were two different types of clergyman, vicar and curate. While being a clergyman required no strenuous physical labor, it did require a Honors degree either from Oxford or Cambridge (Grace; Ray 189). For the most part, the gentry class were the only ones that could actually afford a degree from Oxford or Cambridge to become a clergyman (Ray 189). Another job opportunity in the church included the priest. The priests during this time were respected by society mostly because of their association with the church (Ray 189). In the novel, ... • 8. Dawson Mcallister Gender Stereotypes Gender Stereotypes The issue of gender stereotypes is a complex one. When people think about this problem, they think that men and women have to have certain roles in society. The gender stereotype that women are more emotional than men is a very common gender stereotype that is a problem in our society. This stereotype was most common around 1952, yet the stereotype still occurs today through the media. Judging a women to be the more emotional gender is bad for society because it shapes the woman into being that stereotype. Even though the stereotype that women are more emotional than men is often portrayed through society and the media, men are just as emotional as women. In particular, men can get more emotional than women after a breakup. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This stereotype is presented in The Hopeline by Dawson McAllister who writes about how and why women are more emotional than men. The article states, Women are more prone to talk about what they are thinking and feeling, and to demonstrate how they are feeling with their tears, facial expressions, hand gestures, and body language (McAllister 8). After taking time to analyze the evidence, McAllister is false because even though women often show their emotions, men are more emotional deep down, but are not willing to show it. According to Elite Daily by Paul Hudson, he states that, In this study, conducted by neurologists at Mindlab, men are actually much more sensitive than women when it comes to being presented with emotional stimuli... Boys are taught to be ashamed of the emotions that they experience, so they grow into men who are both emotional confused and in denial... Don t cry. Don t pout. Don t complain Be a man an emotionless, stubborn man (Hudson 13). As can be seen in the evidence, men have a bigger reaction to stimuli. Furthermore, while men are taught to hide their feelings, women are taught to share their emotions with others, and this causes men to tend to be more emotional. In conclusion, men are just as, sometimes more, emotional than women, but they hide their emotions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Real And Nominal Gdp Forecast Real and Nominal GDP Forecasts Taking on account the historical data provided in the forecasts developed by our Economic Research Group, we compared this year s forecasts with the performance of the economy in the past using gross domestic product. Gross domestic product, measures the monetary value of final goods and services that is, those that are bought by the final user produced in a country in a given period of time (say a quarter or a year) according to the International Monetary Fund. Based on this comparison, we determined that there has been a steady increase in gross domestic product (GDP) in terms of Current Dollars, but there is a fluctuation between quarters under Chained Dollars GDP. Current Dollars, also known as Nominal GDP, accounts for inflation changes and uses current market prices while Chained Dollars, known as Real GDP, remove the effects of inflation in its calculation and use prices from a base year. Using this data, we can project the real growth rate for 2006 will decrease 2.56% quarterly, and 10.25% within the year, shown in Exhibit 2b. We calculate the average growth rate using Real GDP because in the United States the growth rate that the BEA reports is a quarter on quarter growth rate, which is the growth in real GDP from one quarter to the next, according to The Motley Fool. These percentages tell us that there has been a significant drop in real growth rates due to consumer confidence falling for the second month straight. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The characters in Tracks must reconcile with their Native American culture while also facing the constant threat to their culture. The characters in Tracks attempt to understand and accept their cultural identities in a country doomed with racial tensions. Napush is an example of a character who is able to positively accept his Native American identity in a healthy way, while Pauline is an example of a character who is unable to accept her Native American identity and reacts negatively to it. Nanapush and Pauline both come to terms with the anti Native racism they encounter in drastically different ways. On one hand, Nanapush does not feel tempted by the white culture that surrounds him. He actively attempts to embrace his Ojibwe identity, despite the white culture that surrounds him. He can see the value in preserving his Native American heritage. In contrast, Pauline actively rejects her Ojibwe identity in favor of attempting to create a new, white identity for herself. She uses her highly religious nature to try and separate herself from her Native American identity. The racism and anti Native culture that surrounds Pauline eventually breaks her down and makes her believe that she must become white. She even starts to believe that she must kill her inner Native identity so that she can finally be accepted as a member of the white community. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Euthanasia may be known as mercy killing but from the point of a Muslim this does not exist. Mercy killing sounds as if a life is being taken as it is the only and best option in a certain situation. • 19. Death Is The Middle Child Of Parents Edward And Emily... Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. She was the middle child of parents Edward and Emily Norcross Dickinson. Young Emily Dickinson s early childhood consisted of attending school, reading books, taking part in church activities, and learning to sing and play the piano. Her formal schooling was phenomenal for girls in the early 19th century, though not unusual for girls in Amherst. After spending some time in Amherst district school, she attended Amherst Academy for about 7 years before entering Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College) in 1847. Dickinson s early years were not without distress. Deaths of friends and relatives, including her young cousin Sophia Holland, prompted questions about death and immortality. Death happens to be a recurring theme in Dickinson s poetry. Although this is the case, no two poems have exactly the same understanding of death, however. Death is sometimes frightening, lenient and gentle, or simply inevitable. The intent of this paper is to analyze the persistent theme of death in Dickinson s poetry and how it is portrayed in some of her most well known pieces. These select few poems will include I like a look of Agony , I heard a Fly buzz when I died and Because I could not stop for Death. • 20. Symbolism In Ernest Hemingway s A Farewell To Arms World War I began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Ernest Hemingway s novel, A Farewell to Arms, follows the life of the Italian Speaking, American Frederic Henry as he joins the war on behalf of the Italians, is injured by a bombshell, and flees after his recovery. In his most popular novel, A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway utilizes the motif of whorehouses, sporadic syntax during Henry s rampant drunkenness, and understatement when Henry encounters death to illustrate how war morally decays the ordinary man. Throughout A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway exemplifies the purpose of whorehouses as a distraction for the soldiers and the role of women in times of war. In the beginning, the motif of whorehouses is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By implementing a confusing syntax during Henry s inebriated state, Hemingway reveals how the war affects the morality of Henry s mind. After his hospitalization from an explosion, Henry s friends bring him alcohol as a get well present. Henry has a drink and argues about Rome with Rinaldi in his drunken state: Roma is feminine, said Rinaldi. It cannot be the father. Who is the father, then, the Holy Ghost? Don t blas pheme. I wasn t blaspheming, I was asking for information. You are drunk, baby. Who made me drunk? I made you drunk because I love you and because America is in the war. (Hemingway 71) Through this ambiguous sentence structure, it is difficult to tell who says, comments, or argues with who. By utilizing this perplexing syntax Hemingway shows how being drunk affects Henry s state of mind. Henry is unable to tell right from wrong, or if the comment made is actually blasphemy or not. Henry s mindstate is altered, as evident by Hemingway s use of muddled syntax, as a result of the alcohol; in addition, Henry only got drunk because he was given alcohol after his injuries in the war. Thus, the war morally decayed Henry s mind through alcohol to the point of not being able to discern right from wrong. The war not only numbs Henry emotionally through alcohol but also through his encounters with death. This debate is likely to stimulate significant developments in landfilling methods during the next decade. Current and proposed landfill techniques are described in this information sheet. This strategy is the most commonly used for nuclear wastes and hazardous wastes. It is also used in some countries for MSW and other non hazardous but polluting wastes. B) Containment and collection of leachate Inflow of water is controlled but not prevented entirely, and leakage is minimised or prevented, by a low permeability basal liner and by removal of leachate. This is the most common strategy currently for MSW landfills in developed countries. The duration of a pollution risk is dependent on the rate of water flow through the wastes. Because it requires active leachate management there is currently much interest in accelerated leaching to shorten this timescale from what could be centuries to just a few decades. C) Controlled contaminant release The top cover and basal liner are designed and constructed to allow generation and leakage of leachate at a calculated, controlled rate. An environmental assessment is always necessary to that the impact of the emitted leachate is acceptable. No active leachate control measures are used. Such sites are only suitable in certain locations and for certain wastes. A typical example would be a landfill in a coastal location, receiving an inorganic waste such as bottom ash from MSW incineration. Social Movements Essay Social Movements Social movements require a fairly complex and multi dimensional paradigm in order to adequately explain the multiplicity of factors that contribute to their development and sustenance. Like both McAdam and Costain, I believe that the political process model is a much more appropriate theory for social movements than either the classical model (with its emphasis on psychology) or the resource mobilization model (with its ultra capitalistic approach to all socio political interactions). Indeed, unlike the classical and resource mobilization theories, the political process model incorporates a number of different factors, making it significantly more realistic and versatile. Both McAdam and Costain analyze a set of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 288). But what exactly constitutes this structure of political opportunity? Costain argues that movements only emerge when the federal government becomes more favorable and supportive towards the members and goals of the movement. Thus, according to Costain, the mild support of the government was instrumental in the psychological preparation of the movement s members; a favorable government encouraged women to realize that there was a possible political solution to their discontent. In this way, at the base of every successful social movement, Costain establishes a prerequisite of an increasingly favorable government (that spurs the psychological state necessary for a large scale social movement). Thus, the government indirectly influences the formation of the social movement, and the social movement then pressures its (oftentimes reluctant) supporter to pass legislative or protective action. In Costain s model, the government is the key figure in both the formation and the success of the social movement. While the government clearly plays an important role in almost every stage of the formation and proliferation of a social movement, I do not think that it is nearly so crucial to the birth of social movements. Indeed, I find Costain s emphasis on government a sort of regression to the earlier elitist theories concerning the resources necessary for the success of a social movement. It explored how being separated from something for a long time can affect the instincts of the individual. In the story, when prisoners get out they are confused, feel unsafe, and think about commiting a crime just to get back into prison. This story shows how being rewarded and being punished makes the individual and makes an identity. Behaviorism is the idea that your behavior is determined by punishment or reward. In Shawshank this is an important theme as it shows how the prisoners change and adapt in prison. Prisoners get so used to prison life, that when they leave it is impossible for them to fit in. For example, Brooks was in prison for about 50 years and when he got paroled he began crying as he was leaving the prison. Being professional involves successfully executing those skills and abilities learned, but always in an honest and acknowledgeable way.
