Pinterest is gaining attention fast and furious. In the last few weeks we are seeing articles and e-books on how to use Pinterest for brand, my friends are using it and I see their “pins” all over Facebook. It seems to have come out of no where. This week we will talk about what Pinterest is, how to use Pinterest and some of the businesses that are using it. We will also chat about some of the pros and cons and issues. In preparing for this weeks session, the content was huge and no way to cover it in 15 minutes. So we are doing two part series. This week an introduction to Pinterest and next week we will dig into more information on how businesses and bloggers can effectively use Pinterest for brand and site traffic.
I have to admit I LOVE Pinterest. I could spend days lost in the beautiful images and content that just flows through it. It reminds of in HS when I would pull pictures and articles from magazines on the latest fashion trends or skiing sticking them up on my wall or making a poster. It’s a very virtual version of that concept only better. Know you can view others with similar interests and tastes and learn even more from what they discover. If you haven’t joined Pinterest I encourage you to check it out, but be warned . . . It will draw you in and won’t let you out!
The process is similar to the other social platforms, you have profile, description, picture and you follow and/or are followed back.
The reason we are hearing so much about Pinterest right now is it is going viral, RIGHT NOW. It grew 1.2 million uses in 42 days, just 42 days. YIKES, that kicks the growth numbers of any other platform out there.
The numbers and demographics of Pinterest are very interesting. Currentlyvery craft / creative based and the boys don’t seem to be playing there as much as the girls. Also currently very US based. It will be interesting to see these numbers evolve.
Hitwise ranked Pinterest at number 4 in the top social Networking sites as of last Friday. Above LinkedIn and Google+. It is hitting fast and furious, the conversation now is what is the staying power of a social site that is going this viral, with no revenue model (hmmm twitter, Facebook . . . ???) and only has 16 employees? We’ve seen more made of less for sure.
BRIAN SFINAS TO NARRATE
First you request an invite.Once your receive your invitation then you connect through facebook or twitter. Very clean and simple and easy to do. It is interesting that with how viral it is going that it is still invitation only, I wonder how long that will last. That may also be a way to manage the numbers and not have the site crash.
You received your invite, you now have a profile how do you get started. Well you just start pinning! A pin can come from anywhere, pictures from the web or even your hard drive or you can re-pin other pins. To pin something you use the Pin button, you can add it to your browse to make it accessible all the time.
A board is a group of similar Pins. For example I have a Yummy! Board, Running Board, Ann Taylor Board and I am about to start a shoes board.
There is a lot of conversation in the craft community about the issues with Pinterest. While they LOVE IT! They are worried about protecting the intellectual property, their creative ideas. Through a lot of this conversation the need for Pinning etiquette has evolved. Above are the Pinning etiquette rules according to Pinterest. The big common theme is make sure that you give credit where credit is due. If you Pin a photo take the time to credit the owner of the photo in addition to the url. There is also a big push against self promotion. My instinct tells me that this will have the same impact as self promotion does on any site and not be well received. Companies who are really successful at social media do not promote they engage and this holds true for Pinterest as well.
Some companies are utilizing it very well. At the top of the list is Etsy, an online craft community where crafters can sell their goods, it is a phenomenal website and it makes sense it has worked so well with Pinterest.
One of the common themes I am seeing in Pinterest is the incredible value in referral traffic, I think this is where it will create it’s greatest value, driving people back to businesses sites where they can better engage them. Bloggers are talking about significant increases in blog traffic since they joined Pinterest.
So as each new social platform evolves we all have to make decisions about whether we can add more to the mix. Clearly Pinterest is showing some strong early signs . . . But so was Google+. Next week we will cover more about the business application of Pinterest and what your choices are.
Okay we got information for this from EVERYwhere. There http://bitly.com/AEUKrR
