TEXT Resources
Text is everywhere in students leaning experiences
in the classroom. Text material s are textbooks, newspa-
per , computer screens etc are all texts –based docu-
ments. According to Smaldino Text Literacy is the ability
to use as a means to gather or to communicate.
The are two important aspects in becoming literate
in use of text as part of children learning process. One
of the aspect is Reading which is making meaning from
text and to gather information. It requires that we: Iden-
tify the words in print – a process called word recogni-
tion, Construct an understanding from them – a process
called comprehension and Coordinate identifying words
and making meaning so that reading is automatic and ac-
curate – an achievement called fluency. The other aspect
is writing which is a method of representing language in
visual or tactile form. These skills develops overtime in
the classroom and the use technology could help address
this development.

“Reading a book is like re-writing it for yourself. You bring to
a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world.
You bring your history and you read it in your own terms.”
- Angela Carter
In text literacy there are limitations. These limita-
tions can be in the classroom or at home.
 Memorization—in the classroom teacher tend to
let student memorize many fact and definition.
 Vocabulary—some textbooks introduce a large
number of vocabulary terms.
 One-way Presentation—Text– based materials
are not interactive.
 Reading level—the major of text materials is the
reading level needed for comprehension.
 Curriculum determination—some textbooks dic-
tate the curriculum rather than supporting it.
 Cursory appraisal—not all textbooks for schools
are examine properly.
ADVANTAGES OF TEXTY RESOURCES
LIMITATION OF TEXT RESOURCES
Text literacy has five ben-
efits of its use for children
ion the classroom. These
benefits are:-
 Availability - Text based
materials are available eve-
rywhere for kids to gather
information.
 Flexibility– Text is adapta-
ble to many purposes and
may be used in any wee-lit
environment.
 Portability—Text-based is
use to carried about .
 User friendly—Text –
based are easy to use.
 Economical—Text-based
material are inexpensive.

TEXT RESOURCES
In coming years literacy will mean knowing how to choose be-
tween print, image, video, sound, and all the potential combinations
they could create to make a particular point with a specific audience,”
says Bronwyn Williams, associate professor of English at
the University of Louisville. “What will not change is the necessity of
an individual to be able to find a purpose, correctly analyze an audi-
ence, and communicate to that audience with information and in a tone
that audience will find persuasive, engaging, and intelligent.”
Having multiple literacies, however, does not only mean being com-
fortable composing with a variety of media; it also means understand-
ing how to use different facets of language in each situation.
“Teachers often don’t give kids enough credit with their control over
language,” says Eric Paulson, associate professor of literary education
at the University of Cincinnati. “They can text ‘IMHO’ on their cell
phones, write ‘my own opinion is’ in a school essay, and read ‘it is my
belief that your scar hurts
when Lord Voldemort is
near you’ without getting
discombobulated.”
