On May 3rd,1999, the weather forecasts in a city located in Oklahoma showed an F5 tornado.
Meteorologists had said that the tornado had the strongest winds to ever be recorded. One family
that was affected by this had their house ripped to pieces, and they had to take shelter in their
neighbor's basement. Debris rained on top of them from every direction. They struggled to get out of

American Red Cross helps out communities that have been struck with disaster and brings them
back to life again. They also accept the gracious blood donations from people who want to donate

The Pillowcase Project was created in 2005 by the Southeast Louisiana Chapter of
The American Red Cross after witnessing Loyola University students carrying their belongings in
pillowcases upon evacuating the school dorms due to the massive flooding associated with
Hurricane Katrina. Soon after, New Orleans chapter Chief Executive Officer Kay Wilkins partnered
with a local art therapist to create a program that helped children cope during the recovery process
after Hurricane Katrina. In 2013, Disney decided to collaborate with The American Red Cross to
extend access to the program to other regions of the United States. To date, Disney remains as a
strong financial contributor to the program. Hence, The Pillowcase Project evolved into a

With such a high number of volunteers, it becomes difficult to train and teach them all, possibly
leading to such problems involving loss of quality control with collecting and transferring blood.
Unfortunately, the solution to the next problem is more volunteers. Perhaps the issue with which the
ARC fails the most is resolving their work force, specifically volunteers. The way the ARC handled
disaster relief after Hurricane Katrina, clarifies their shortcomings. After the land fall of Katrina, the

For the group's PPR project, we chose volunteering for the Red Cross's campus blood drive. This
was decided upon because of the important role that the organization has developed in humanity, the
important role it plays in healthcare, as well as the many roles a nurse has within this organization.
To begin, let's start with a little history of the Red Cross. It was founded by Clara Barton in 1881
during the Civil War. Barton was originally working as a record's clerk, however she had an

your involvement. As a member of the American Red Cross Club, I have great opportunities to
actively engage in many community services that give me chances to make profound contributions
to the society and effectively develop leadership skills along the way. Throughout my time serving
in the American Red Cross Club, I have participated in a number of different projects, range from
supporting the military members and their families, assisting the animal shelters, to hosting monthly
blood drives. Yet, the "Spooky Skedaddle Halloween Carnival", an event that raises funds for the
Texas School for the Deaf Foundation during Halloween time, left the most significant and
remarkable impact on me. During the service, I learned how to effectively run a fundraising event. I
learned to use sign language to communicate in the deaf culture. The service helps me grow and
build long lasting relationships with people, whom I was greatly inspired by. It was my pleasure to
be able to work and have close interaction with many talented and passionate deaf people, who
never cease to do amazing things regardless of their disabilities. "The only disability in life is a bad

Since 2010, the American Red Cross (ARC) annual expenditures on domestic relief services have
been between $250 million and $400 million with majority of the donations coming from private
donors. Additionally as of 2015, approximately 90% of the Red Cross workforce during disasters
were comprised of volunteers. 2014 the Red Cross saw an enormous influx of expenditures as a
result of Hurricane Sandy. This national disasters tested the overall efficiency of the Red Cross
Operations since the Hurricane Katrina debacle. One of the significant issues raised by the society
was the lagged response time of the ARC. One the reasons for this delay was due to the uncertain of
the responsibilities between the ARC and the Federal Emergency Management Agency

supporting of the people of the military personnel's that are protecting the nation and they help the
people respond to the challenges of the military life that is there and that needs to be attended to in
