The document discusses various film techniques used in the movie Mean Girls 2, including flashbacks, flash forwards, speeding up/slowing down footage, slow motion, match on action cuts, high cutting rates, establishing shots, mid shots, long shots, low angle shots, close ups, and bird's eye view camera angles. Flashbacks are used to show the main character's backstory and how she grew up differently from other girls. Flash forwards are implemented at the beginning to set up the plot. Speeding up and slowing down footage emphasizes certain moments. Slow motion allows time to focus on characters. Matching cuts connect shots seamlessly. A fast cutting rate packs more into one scene. Establishing shots introduce new locations
2. Flash backs
In these two print screens we see flash backs of the main
character we see her working on cars with her dad and by
herself which shows her interest of cars has grown over the
years but also in the flash back there is a narration from the girls
peaking about how her passion for cars has grown but only
growing up with her dad as her only parental figure
The flash back technique was used on this scene to show isn't
like other girls and this is how she has grown up. using the
flashback technique in the film helps us understand the
characters more and inform the audience why they act a certain
way
The flash back technique is used a lot in this film. They have
done this because there is a lot of things that happen in this film
that the audience would not understand unless the flash back
technique was not used
3. FLASH FORWARDS
This is an example of the technique flash
forward. It is used at the very start of the
film. They used this technique at the very
start of the film to show why the main
character took the money from her future
best friends dad . Also the flash forward
shows the two characters that are in the
film the blonde haired girls and the
ginger girl. This makes the audience
question how they met each other and
also makes the audience watch all of the
film to find out .
4. SPEED UP
We first see an character under a car fixing it and grabbing
some tools then image is sped up so that the character is under
the car faster and a little girl come out and grabs some tools
which shows that two people are fixing the car. The speed up
technique is used to show what is happening in a fast motion
Speeds down
The speed down technique is used to
emphasise what is happening in this shot
we see this character running in a slower
speed and picking up a ball and throwing it
down in the same slowed down speed this
is done in this film to show that
5. SLOW MOTION
The first print screen shows a mid shot of the three main characters in this scene we
first see all three characters in slow motion and a voice over describing the character in
the middle they are all in slow motion. Then we see a shot of one of the three characters
in slow motion this gives us time to see who this character is and also gives the narrator
time to tell us who this character is and their characteristics. The technique Slow motion
slows everything down and makes the audience focus on each character in the shot.
6. Match on action
The first screen shot we see is a girl on a scooter the
camera angle that is used is a birds eye view on the
girl that is on the scooter this is where we first see the
girl riding the scooter then the camera shows a long
shot of the girl riding the scooter and then it shows
her final destination this technique is called match
on action. We also see in these varies of shot that
180 degree rule is used we follow the scooter round
when it is moving we also see that a long shot is
being used in that shot as well
7. Cutting rate
The cutting rate of this scene is very fast the reason why
that there is a fast cutting rate is because in the film they are
showing us how many schools the main character has been
to,. The reason why they have cut this scene this way is to
show us the different kinds of schools she has been to. This
means that the audience will not get bored with this scene.
Having a fast cutting rate mean that you can put more into
one scene then putting it into several scene it also means
that different kinds of shots and camera angles can be
included as well.
8. Shot variation
The first shot is an establishing shot this shows us a new location that we haven’t seen before. In
this film the establishing shot was used to show the audience where the unpopular girl lived and
also the characters in the film talk about this building as well. A long shot is also used as well and
a car is also in the shot as well. The establishing shot helped the audience know that the girl is
rich and also having a expensive car in the shot helped us understand that.
A mid shot is used to help us see what is in the characters hands and also shows us where they are
as well but we cant exactly see where they are. Using a mid shot means that we can see their
facial expressions and see the mise en scene of the characters.
A extreme longshot is used to see where the scooter is going but it also shows us the surrounding
as well.it shows all of the background and shows the detail in the surroundings as well.
We see a low angle shot of a guy being very inappropriate. this is also a mid shot so we can see
everything he is doing. The reason why a low angle is used is to only focus on the situation that is
happening
there is a close up of one of the characters . The reason this technique was used in this film was
to show the characters facial expression and how they react closely it also helps us see how the
character feels and it makes us focus on one character and nothing else.
Here we see a mid shot of one of the main characters but we can also see that she is in a school
background this can also be a establishing shot as well because in the background we see one of
the iconic yellow American school buses .
Lastly we see a birds eye view camera angle being used in this scene . Panning was also used
when the girl on the scooter was doing a circle wound the parking lot. The birds eye view camera
angle helps us see things from above and helps us see the different cars and people in the back
ground it also helps us follow the scooter as well.
