1. Way Down East - DW Griffith, Early Example of Parallel editing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI2e3pXat54
This clip contains continuity editing where were the we see two different people in parallel
edits, in the same situation. It has continuity to create a sense of danger for the audience
because they see the characters running out of time as the ice moves towards the edge of
the waterfall. This creates a fast rhythm s the male runs because he is running out of time to
save the other character from falling over the end of the waterfall. The purpose of doing this
is to make the audience feel worried for the characters and create suspense as the audience
are left wondering if the man will get to the other person in time. Near the end there is a
jump as the scene changes as he rescues the girl. Manipulation of time may have been used
in this clip too because in some scenes it looks like it has been sped up to make him move
faster. This was done to make it seem more dramatic and to seem like he is almost out of
time so he is moving faster than normal. The purpose of using these is to make the audience
worried for these characters lives. Choosing to have the character sped up shows that it’s
really important and they are on a time limit otherwise there will be consequences for the
characters. The impact of this is to create a sense of tension but also to create a small
chance of hope that he can rescue her in time. It was put edited that way to make the
audience feel both emotions just in case the worst happens to the characters the tension
makes the audiences feel worried because they are wondering if they would kill off a main
character
Example of Parallel Editing in "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991) -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts1x6uADFtM
The parallel editing is the techniques of continuously alternating two scenes that happen
simultaneously in two different locations. This clip is a misdirect because audiences believe
the two scenes are linked to each other and he is about to be caught by the FBI but the
scenes are happening at the same time but they are not the same thing someone else is at
the door when the bell rings. The impact of this clip is you think he is about to be caught
until you realize that the end that the scenes are happening in two different places. The
point in putting the scenes together like this is to create tension and suspense as people
believe the FBI is getting closer to catch him. The shot speeds are different between the two
when it’s the FBI they are longer takes and focuses on them for a longer period of time.
When it’s the scenes with the bad guy are shorter and rapid. The parallel editing that is used
throughout the scene is used to mislead the audience such as when the flower man rings
the door bell the alarm goes off and audiences are made to believe the alarm is going off
because he rang the bell. At the start of the scenes we are shown an establishing shot so we
can see where this scene is taking place. Part way through the scene we get a over the
shoulder shot of the killer to show you what the character sees, and audiences are
expecting to see the flower man who they saw before but when he opens the door Clarice is
standing there and audiences are shocked because they have been misled and now don’t
know where the scene is taking place.
2. The parallel editing clips are different because one is a miss direct while the other is clearly
showing the audience what is happening but from two different points of view. I believe the
most effective one was the silence of the lamb’s clip because it built up suspense in the
scene to make the audience believe that the two scenes they were shown were connected
but instead they were just happening at the same time in a different location. Then the
audience are left wondering if the person trapped in the hole is going to escape because no
one knows she is there.
Battleship Potemkin: Odessa Steps Sequence
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JecXKK2rmCc
In this scene a montage is used to show a large amount of time in a small-time frame. This is
done to show people reacting to the situation they are in. it also shows multiple other
people reacting because it wants to show the audience show devastating and how terrified
the characters are within the movie, this is done to make the audience think about what is
happening and make them feel emotions towards the characters. A shot reversed shot is
used in this clip to show how the child got shot, the camera then cuts to the mother of the
child to show her reaction of her child being shot and then cuts back to the child dying. This
is done to show the panic the characters are feeling in the scene. This technique is effective
because it is used to make the audience have sympathy for the mother and her child that
just died. The montage is effective because it shows the audience the situations the
characters are in. By showing a shot of people running down stairs the audience get a sense
of panic. Other scenes are added to the montage to show other things that are happening
during this panic to speed up time. Overall the audience are made to feel worried for the
safety of the children and elderly people because they are more vulnerable than other
people which allows them to connect more with the characters within the movie.
Rocky III Training montage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4soF2wigKSM
In Rocky 3 a montage is used to show a large period of time passing in the movie in a short
period of time as we see Rocky going through his training. This is done to move the story
forward and move time within the movie while also informing people of what the character
has done during that time that has passed. There is a mixture of medium shots, close ups
and long shots to show the training that that Rocky must go through and how hard he has
worked during this time and shows how much he has changed from the start of the
montage to the end of the montage. The different shots allow the audience to keep focus
on the scene because they are changing locations throughout the movie. The montage is
effective because it shows the audience what the character has been through and keeps
them interested by showing a montage of what the character has done because it keeps
them Informed while keeping it entertaining with music in the background.
Team America - spoof montage

This clip is another montage and the purpose of showing a mintage is to show a period of
time moving forwards and also to inform the audience of what’s happened to the characters
3. in that time frame. The montage is a collection of other famous montages which might
appeal to the audience because they might recognize the original montage from what is
happening in the scene and find it funny. They also use familiar music which further
interests the audience. This is used effectively because it uses montages the audience are
familiar with to engage them into enjoying the parody montage they are being shown. The
connection has already been established because of the familiarity of the scenes because
they find them recognizable because of other movies. A variety of shots are used such as
medium shots, zoom ins, zoom outs, long shots and close ups, they are used to keep the
audiences interested and the montage going to show what has changed if all the shots were
the same you wouldn’t know anything has changed. However, the movement and variety of
shots makes the montage more effective and makes the audiences believe that something
has changed
I believe the most effective montage is the rocky one because you can see how much
progress he has went through to get to where he is in his career and mixed with the music
playing in the background makes this scene more memorable than the others. The other
two are effective because one shows humor in the montage while the other shows sadness
and loss and you understand that time has passed in all of them. The rocky montage also
shows a variety of shots to keep people entertained and focused on the scene
