Religious Conflict In Beowulf
Jeskin howard p#8th 9/18/17
Religion conflict This essay will elaborate and on the conflict between beowulf and christian ideals
of pride and eternal reward. In beowulf, there are situations where the main character does things for
fame and rewards instead of the greater goods of the people of kingdom .
In beowulf there is a conflict between morals seen by the christian religion and human humility .
throughout the christian view it is said or felt that man can and will survive only through the
protection of God, that all earthly gifts flow from God, and that the proper bearing of man is to be
humble and unselfish. "Afterwards a boy–child was sent to Shield, a cub in the yard, a comfort scent
by God to that nation. He knew what they

Cultural, religious and language conflicts in Bless Me, Ultima
Bless Me, Ultima, written by Rudolfo Anaya and published in 1972, has become one of the most
widely read as well as critically acclaimed novels in the Chicano literature. It is first in the trilogy of
novels by Anaya, with Heart of Aztlan (1976) and Tortuga (1979) following it. This novel can be
viewed from many angles as well as layers, as it intertwines issues or themes of psychological
maturation, social changes, identity crisis and importantly cultural conflict, all into coherent and
interesting story of a young boy and his guide. Antonio Márez y Luna or Antonio is the young
protagonist who with the guidance of his curandera (Traditional Native American healer) and
mentor, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Antonio feels so much pressure from both the sides that it gets reflected in his dream, where again
the conflict between his father and mother reaches an 'incensed' state, with Antonio being
'facilitated' to adopt their respective sides. His internal conflict gets managed in a positive direction,
when Ultima makes the entry and tries to solve his predicament, by suggesting him to combine best
of both his parents' culture as well as their wishes.
The second cultural plus religious conflict happens when Antonio tussles mentally to believe and
accept Catholic God. This is an extension of the above conflict, because Antonio gets torn between
his mother influenced Catholicism based Spanish culture and his father's indigenous roots.
However, after learning about the Golden Carp story and from his experiences, Antonio questions
the existence of Catholic god. He further doubts god's presence, as many evil things are going on
under his watch, without any stopping. Towards the end, with the guidance of Ultima, Antonio
comes to the understanding that one can form their own religion based on their beliefs from various
religious sources.
The third language conflict makes the appearance when Antonio goes to school, where English is
the medium of instruction. With Antonio being raised in the 'hotbed' of indigenous cultures, where
he was taught only Spanish, he struggles to grasp and learn English. He finds the behaviour of the
children in his classroom quite alien to

Religious Conflict Between The Nazis And Jehovah 's Witnesses
Religious Conflict between the Nazis and Jehovah's Witnesses In World War 2 many religions were
being persecuted and punished "because of their perceived "racial inferiority": Roma (Gypsies), the
disabled, and some of the Slavic peoples (Poles, Russians, and others). Other groups were
persecuted on political, ideological, and behavioral grounds, among them Communists, Socialists,
Jehovah 's Witnesses, and homosexuals," states The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum .
Jehovah's Witnesses were persecuted for the reason that they did not follow the Nazi's ways and did
not fight in the war with or against them. Many died because the Nazis would shoot them, put them
in hot furnaces, or gas rooms where they would put a poisonous gas in a room where some
witnesses were locked up in and eventually died in the poisonous room. In the concentration camps,
the only way to be free and leave the concentration camp was to sign a paper saying that they will
convert and become a follower of the Nazis. There was one experience that was really surprising to
many. One of the leaders of a concentration camp had lined up some of Jehovah's Witnesses to see
who will convert to a Nazi. Very few said that they will and so once the leader saw who will convert
and who would not he said, "Those who said that they will convert and follow Hitler will be killed
because how can we trust you if you had just betrayed your own religion." In the end those who said
that they will convert, were killed, and

Religious Conflict in Russia
RELIGIOUS CONFLICT IN RUSSIA
One of the great ironies of history is that Marxism, an atheistic theory, was first implemented in
Russia—a land inhabited by millions of believers practicing most of the world's great religions. In
fact, religion is so integral to the culture and history of Russia, it would be impossible to gain a full
understanding for the unique character of the country and its people without a careful examination
of the religious factors at play throughout its history.
BACKGROUND
Basic Demographics Any discussion of Russia must begin with its single most striking feature—its
sheer vastness. During World War II, a German general noted how his troops "were depressed by the
monotony of the landscape and the immensity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In terms of languages, Russian is the common official language throughout the Federation,
understood by 99 percent of its current inhabitants and widespread in many adjacent areas of Asia
and Eastern Europe. However, national subdivisions of Russia have additional official languages,
further reflecting the diverse ethnicity of the country. As a result, there are more than 100 languages
spoken throughout the nation, most tied to the particular ethnic groups from which they sprang.
Economics and Education Perhaps the most significant impact of the collapse of the Soviet Union in
1991 has been the economic chaos which subsequently consumed the country. For five years
following the collapse, Russia saw its comparatively developed centrally planned economy contract
severely. It was not until 1997 that Russia began to show signs of recovery as a result of its new
open–market policies. Since that time, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country has grown
by an average of 6.7 percent per year, largely on the back of oil exports, as well as a steadily
developing service and industrial output. Currently, Russia's GDP by purchasing power parity (PPP)
is approximately $1.5 trillion, making it the ninth largest economy in the world and the fifth largest
in Europe. If this growth rate is sustained, the country will become the second largest European
economy after Germany and the sixth largest in

Technological Advancements, Religious Conflicts: The...
During this semester we have discussed many different things that have happened in Modern
History. We have learned about many different cultures, religions, changing of religions, wars, and
expansion. These major events that took place was not only monumental at the time, but it also
changed the world forever. Whether it was Hitler or Christopher Columbus the people that we have
learned about in this class were truly changed the world good and bad for many generations to
come. The three major themes that our class has talked about was technological advancements,
religious conflicts, and the impact of political revolution. One of the main themes we talked about in
modern history is technological advancements. There was a tremendous amount ... Show more

This was definitely one of the biggest revolutions ever. Huge industries went to Europe and paid
workers low wages to work and create materials much faster and efficient than ever before. It was
much faster because unlike ever before they used machines to produce materials instead of trying to
produce it by hand. There were some good and bad things that came with this revolution. Many
people lost their business because they could not produce items as effectively and the machines
could and therefor they lost their business. The working conditions were awful for the workers.
Many of the machines were dangerous to use and because of that some of the workers were badly
injured or killed; also the conditions were very dirty which caused sickness for the workers. The
wages of the workers were very low which cause the poverty to be very high. Even though there
were bad things that came with the Industrial revolution, there were also a lot of pivotal inventions
that changed the production of goods forever. One of the main inventions was the "Spinning Jenny"
invented by James Hargreaves in 1764. This contraption made it to where you could spin more than
one ball of yarn at a time to make it much more efficient

Religious Conflicts In The Canterbury Tales
The Canterbury Tales is a collection of 24 stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer.
The tales are about a group of Pilgrims traveling to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas
Becket at the Canterbury Cathedral. Out of the 24 tales I have chosen the Prioress to be my favorite.
The Prioress was my first choice because the religious aspect of the tale and how religious conflict
has been such a huge problem for life back then and now. The Prioress tale starts off with a
prologue. The Prologue is about the Prioress (Madame Eglentyne) praying to the Virgin Mary. Then,
the prioress tale begins. This tale is placed in Asia and is about a boy who walks through a Jewish
ghetto in a Christian city. The boy is singing O Alma Redemptoris, a salute to the Blessed Lady,
while walking through the Jewish ghetto. This angers the Jewish people who were listening to the
words of the devil. They then hired a murder who slit the boy's throat and threw him in a pit. The
boy's widow mother then goes searching for her son and begging everyone, including the Jews, to
tell her where her son was. She then gets an idea from Jesus to sing where her son was thrown in the
pit. Although the boy's throat was slit, he begins to sing his Alma Redemptoris. Amazed by the boys
singing, fellow Christians ran to the pit and went to get the provost. The Prioress was a religious
figure in her tale and therefore making her part of the ecclesiastical class. She was a member of the
church and

Religious Conflict Through the Ages Essay
Religious Conflict Through the Ages
The role religion plays in world history is, at best, tremendous. Through the ages, religion has both
unified and divided civilizations often bringing extreme human casualty, in the case of division, or
creating interesting new cultures, in the case of the latter. In the Ancient civilizations such as the
Greek, Kush and Egyptian empires religion serves as a catalyst further strengthening the bond found
in such homogeneous societies. In these civilizations it is important to note that the inhabitants did
not conceive of religion in terms of a belief system in a higher moral authority, rather, the belief
system was such a part of their lifestyle that there was no differentiation. In discussing ... Show

However, three distinctions can be outlined in this discussion. Firstly, religion serves as a catalyst
further unifying homogeneous civilizations such as the Greek, Ku*censored*e and Egyptian
societies, secondly, religion serves as a primary focus of difference when two homogeneous
societies, such as the Muslims and the Christians involve themselves in a conflict for spiritual
dominance, and, thirdly, how religion, in some homogenous societies such as the Protestant
Reformation of the late Tudor and early Stuart dynasties in England, serves to divide the people.
Religious observance in ancient civilizations serves to further bridge the connectedness that the
people of those societies felt. In the ancient Greek, Ku*censored*e and and Egyptian cultures
religion was such a integral part of their lifestyle that it was totally indistinguishable in terms of
contemporary classifications. The ancient Greeks held close to a common polytheistic belief system
and operated the government, domestic lifestyle, and recreation from this system. The evidence is
abounds in that the Olympic Games were held at the feast of Zeus at Olympia in Elis, and the
Pythian Games were held at Delphi, in honor of Apollo. Although the Greeks were advanced in the
governmental procedures such as their creation of the republic, Kings such as

Lake 's Assertion Of Religious Conflict
Lake's assertion that religious conflict in early Stuart England was the result of a pursuit of
traditional conformity by the Puritans holds true to a large extent. In the earlier half of the 17th
Century, the Puritans have consistently sought for reforms to make changes to the English Church,
with an unfaltering insistence of removing any perceived popish practices to create church in the
model of a more traditional Calvinism. He should not, however, go as far as to proclaim that there
was no 'rise of Arminianism' as there was indeed an ostensible influx of Arminianism during the
reign of Charles I. Arminianism did burgeoned steadily, especially under the quasi–Catholic policies
of Charles I and innovations that William Laud brought to the Church. However, with or without the
antagonistic ideological differences of Arminianism and Calvinism, there was always the constant
seeking of reforms by the Puritans, to move as far away from Catholicism as possible. The
introduction of Arminianism merely 'created a politically assertive Puritanism '. The fear that
Arminian practices would force the English Church towards a more Catholic–liked system invoked
fear amongst the Puritans resulting in a 'call for more sweeping changes'. The Puritans wanted
change before any major form of Arminianism took shape and with the latter's increasing influence
from the 1620s, puritans simply became more aggressive in seeking reforms. The accession of
James I in 1603 saw the Millenary

There have been significant rises in violence and discrimination against religious groups by
governments. Social hostility such as attacks, pressure, wars and terrorism was strong in one–third

Religious–related terrorism and sectarian violence occurred in one–fifth of the 198 countries in that

Managing Religious Conflict in Therapy
Running Head: MANAGING RELIGIOUS CONFLICT Managing Religious Conflict within
Psychotherapy Ryan Hagen UMASS Lowell Abstract This paper discusses the relationship of
religion and psychology within the setting of interpersonal dynamic psychotherapy. It raises the
question of whether and to what extent religion should be included in a therapeutic setting. Varying
perspectives on this issue are reviewed, followed by an examination of the consequences of
addressing religion within therapy. Several examples are offered of potential pit falls a therapist may
encounter in this situation as well as suggestions for minimizing the likelihood of these occurrences.
Two models are included which provide frameworks for assessing the degree ... Show more content

In 1989, Richards, in a study of 100 Mormon patients, found that they were more trusting of
therapists who disclosed a belief in god. A lot of this depends on the patient. Quackenbos (et al
1986) outlined four viewpoints or degrees of involvement a person may have with their religion, and
how it is used to interpret mental health. The four viewpoints are orthodox, moderate, neutralist and
atheistic. These lay on a continuum, where those with orthodox viewpoints believe mental problems
are caused by sin, and on the other end, atheistic sees mental problems as purely psychological.
Another framework was proposed by Batson and Ventis (1982). They argued that a therapist's need
to understand the different ways of being religious in order to understand the impact that religion
may or may not have on their patient. They created their framework around 3 dimensions, each of
which has it's own continuum. The 3 dimensions are quest, ends and means. The 'quest' continuum
measures the degree of importance the individual places on existential questions, but does not
necessarily feel an urgency to have answered. An example of this would be an agnostic, or a
philosopher who enjoys the process of examining these kinds of questions. A person on the high end
of this continuum would tend to have doubts about religion, and be tentative about religious
viewpoints. The 'means' continuum

The Integral Role of Religion Illustrated in Gabriel...
Religion plays an integral role in The Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia. It is
generally considered by most readers that the initial chapters don't consist of the religious and
spiritual makeup of the townspeople but in fact, religion is subliminally present even earlier, within
the title of the novel itself. The word "Death" is integrally and inextricably linked with religious
matter. After all, birth and the inevitably of death are the two most important and debatable points in
religion.
Religion is meant to be a solid force, helping society to bond better and progress in a civilized
manner. For the same purpose, religion, with its laws and codes of conduct, monitors peoples' way
of life to ensure that humanity remains ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, Marquez underlines, "Both were exhausted from the barbarous work of death..." (49).
Marquez exemplifies the way in which some aspects of religion are ignored and some have great
emphasis put on them. When Roman finds out that his new bride is not a virgin, he returns her. She
is beaten savagely, and her brothers are called from the brothel to come defend the family's honor.
The hypocrisy of family is revealed as they consider honor to be a part of the religion and instead of
religiously and peacefully solve the manner, the brothers murder Santiago Nasar. The family
believes that upholding the honor is righteous, and in doing so the sin of murdering Nasar is
downplayed. Furthermore, when the brothers put down their knives in front of the priest, instead of
giving them advice or condemning them, the priest "recalled the surrender as an act of dignity" (49).
This is in total conflict with Catholicism as it is amongst the Ten Commandments that "Thou shall
not kill" and thus it illustrates that even the priest of the town has lost the knowledge of the true
religion. Marquez cements the corruption of religion as even father Amador protected the brothers
and not only him but "the lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor,
which was upheld by the court in good faith" (48). Marquez continues to demonstrate that the
society was lenient on the brothers due to tradition and thus it illustrates that religion was only a

Religion And Its Effect On Society
Religion plays a large role in today's society, it's used to comfort us in our greatest times of need as
well as explain seemingly unknowable questions, such as what is the meaning of life, why are we
here, what happens when we die, why do we suffer but now as in the past religion can be a harmful
factor in our society. It has been the cause of wars, witch hunts, and proliferated superstition. Today
there are such laws that allow a parent to deny their child adequate medical care even if it's to treat a
potentially life threatening illness. In other cases religion is cited as a reason to deny someone
access to birth control. In school's modern science is at times having to contend with creationism
which seems to be a reinterpreting of modern science and is in complete opposition with established
facts. Other times such things as sex education is taught inaccurately which then leaders to things
such as high rates of teen pregnancies and STD's spreading. In other countries these actions are at
times more extreme such as when we hear about suicide bombings, honor killing, and the like. In
this paper I will discuss a few of these topics that I find to be pertinent, yet the topics are many. I
will discuss the harms that such actions can cause to us as a society both socially and physically due
to such harmful laws, I will also discuss the social reasons as to why such actions are performed in
the first place and why they may be found to be socially acceptable. Lastly I will speak

The History of Religious Conflicts in America Essay
The History of Religious Conflicts in America
Throughout its history, the United States has characteristically remained a country of two things: a
country of immigrants, and a country of unmatched religious diversity. And yet when compared
with the rest of the world – where these two very factors alone have so often engendered horrible
religious wars and decades of enduring conflict – the history of religious conflict in the United
States seems almost nonexistent.
That is not to say the United States has been immune to its share of conflict explicitly rooted in
religion. This paper explores the various manifestations of religious conflict throughout the history

Due to the distance from England and the room in the colonies, many religions were able to
establish themselves in America, colony by colony. For example, Anglicans, who conformed to the
Church of England, populated Virginia. Massachusetts was home to the Puritans. Pennsylvania was
full of Quakers. Baptists ruled in Rhode Island. And Roman Catholics found a haven in Maryland,
where they could establish themselves amid the other colonists' protestant majority. Each of these
colonies maintained a distinct religious character and favored one religious denomination's power.
The American colonists saw the revolution not only as a war for political independence, but to
protect the religious diversity of the thirteen colonies. Put in other terms, it was a war for religious
independence and freedom. To sever ties with Mother England would be to ensure that the various
Christian denominations could co–exist on the American continent. The conflict was, in part, a
conflict that pitted the various American religious denominations against the Church of England,
who wanted to impose a uniform, Anglican religion on the colonies.
Early Religious Persecution
The period after the Revolutionary War saw a lot of infighting between the various states and
Christian denominations. Virginia, which was home to the largest portion of Anglicans loyal to the
Church of England, was the scene of notorious acts

Elsie and Her Mother in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
In a story of a young girl coming of age and finding her sexuality in a very religious community, it
is key to have a female figure that plays a key role for the character. A mother should play the key
role but what happens when this role is confused with a very spiritual role? Where will a young girl
turn to when her life goes against the rules society has set for her?
Jeanette has lived a sheltered life with no influence on her except for the church. Her mother is a
strict Christian with a deep resentment for things and people not within her fold. Being brought up
in a society where going against the norm is a sin. A society that shakes its head at acts of

confused one at first. Jeanette gained a sense a self with her mother. She knew she was to work with
the Lord and teach his words to others. Her goal in life was to go and be a missionary, to teach
others how to believe in God. Combined with this imbedded sense of self is the confidence Elsie
gave her. Elsie not only understood
the word of the Lord and came from within the society Jeanette grew up in, she had a sense of the
world around her, that the world didn?t start and stop with the preaching of the Lord. Elsie gave
Jeanette a feeling of fellowship, a deep friendship that was based on true feelings, not the Lord.
In one part of the book Elsie helps Jeanette with the transition of home schooling, which was based
on biblical texts, to public schooling. Elsie gave Jeanette a way of incorporating her biblical
background into a public school setting, even if it did shock and raise eyebrows. The older woman
gave Jeanette a much–needed avenue to express herself. At this time her mother is not too upset
with the friendship. She likes the reaction Jeanette is getting from her religious art works and other
biblical oddities that seem out of place in public school. Elsie is still seen as a fellow follower, a
follower of Jeanette?s mother.

Essay on The Religious Conflict in South Asia
The Religious Conflict in South Asia
It is a misconception to believe that there has always been conflict between Muslims and Hindu's.
At one time, Muslims and Hindus would live together in peace even worshiping in the same
building, a purely harmonious relationship. However the peace was not to last. In modern times the
conflict it could be said is inevitable. In this essay I hope to look at the issues of conflict in South
Asia focusing on India and in particular the continuing Hindu–Muslim tensions, and look at possible
reasons for the continuing conflict which appears to have escalated since the withdrawal of British
Rule from India.
Multiple events had shaped the Indian subcontinent with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However this harmony was short lived. By the seventeenth century Muslim rule under the strict rule
of Mughal leader, Aurangzeh, over the Hindus began. Aurangzeh imposed taxes upon the Hindus,
destroyed their temples often converting them to mosques, and sometimes even forced them to
covert to Islam. By the eighteenth century the Mughal empire had disbursed and the British began to
obtain increasing power. The British colonialism of India led to the unification of Hindus and
Muslims, for both opposed the British officers and resentment grew as they were denied jobs and
high positions government.
By the nineteenth century the Indian National Congress (I.N.C.) had been formed and were in union
demanding equal opportunities from colonial rule. In attempt to counter out the increasing Hindu
educated class, the British sought to make Muslims their allies. This failed but triggered Islamic
feeling that in order to protect their culture in the increasingly Hindu I.N.C., believed the Muslims
should have their own Islamic state.
In 1940 the all–Indian Muslim league declared its desire for a 'Pakistan' meaning 'land of the pure'
under the confederation of an all Hindu state called 'Hindustan' or the 'land of the Hindus'. however

Tartuffe, Religion Essay
The context surrounding the period in which Tartuffe was written in, the 17th Century is
remembered as being a time of extreme power for the French Monarchy. King Louis XIV and
Cardinal Richelieu transformed France's feudal monarchy to an absolute monarchy. What must also
be noted about this time is the fact that the Catholic Church and Politicians had a great deal of
power over authors and playwrights. In this time of social and religious persecution, Molière created
Tartuffe , a comedy dealing with hypocrisy and to a great extent, religion and how religion can be
used in a negative way, to mask sin. The play is known to be offensive towards the Catholic Church

III scene 6 when Damis accuses Tartuffe of trying to seduce Elmire, Tartuffe uses reverse
psychology to win Orgon over by confessing the all things awful, to an extent in which Orgon
begins to sympathise with him. It is clearly shown that Tartuffe goes to the absolute extreme when
he apologises to Orgon;
Oui mon frère, je suis un méchant, un coupable,
Un malheureux pécheur tout pleine iniquité,
Les plus grand scélérat qui jamais ait été;
Chaque instant de ma vie est change de souillures;
Elle n'est qu'un amas de crimes et d'ordures;
Et je vois que le ciel, pour ma punition,
Me veut mortifier en cette occasion. The language used is extremely depressing, almost showing
that it is out of character for Tartuffe to do such a thing, he just feels that he should confess as he is
under Orgon's roof and shouldn't make his son out to be a liar. This is what Orgon believes, and
although the audience knows differently, Damis is still asked to leave Orgon's house, showing
Orgon, a very religious man, being completely hypocritical, as he is undermining his family. Orgon

Anti Semitism As A Conflict Of Religious Identity And...
For many centuries the Jewish people were scowled upon in their society and have been physically
and mentally tormented. Anti–Semitism was been around for many generations, and it ranges from a
conflict of religious identity and national identity. The holocaust took place 70 years ago and people
claim that it was the stem of Anti–Semitism, but Anti–Semitism goes as far back as the fourth
century, and ultimately helped pave the path for the Holocaust. Medieval Anti–Semitism took place
during the time where the Jews lived under the dominant religion of Christianity under the Roman
Empire in Europe. The Jews during this period suffered from the crusade, blood libels, and hatred
from the Christians. This then transitioned into National Anti–Semitism, which took place during
the Enlightenment. Many people during this time were almost "Patriotic" people believed highly in
loyalty to their nation, Jews being the outsiders, who did not share many of the attributes these
people had such as language or history were a targets for this National anti Semitism (modern Anti–
Semitism). Thus Christian Anti–Semitism transitioned to modern Anti–Semitism: the
enlightenment, Jew–hatred did not end but rather changed from religious prejudice, god and law, to
peoplehood/national aspect, unity of a nation (Why The Jews? – Secular Antisemitism: The
Enlightenment).
There was a period where many of the Christians fundamental beliefs were similar to Judaism, such
as monotheism (Why the Jews? –

If I was given the opportunity to sit down and have a discussion with any one person, living or

old when Todd was killed. I would tell him how sweet Noah is and what a kind, loving soul he has.
Also, that he is placed in the gifted and talented classes at school. I would talk next about Nathan
and how he is so independent and wants to be older then he really. About our daughter Emily and
how she made the honors list at college and just finished her first year there. I would tell him about

The religious conflict in the Elizabethan era must be understood in the light of how a religion
stemmed to two different forms causing bloodshed along the way. In fact, it can be said one of the
largest religious disputes during that the era was the Catholics versus the Protestants which were
both fleshed out from Christianity. Even if Catholics and Protestants were stemmed from
Christianity, both differs in some ways. During the Elizabethan era, Catholics find worth in reading
the Bible since Latin written Catholic Bibles were prominent that time. They also regarded their
priests as divine beings. On the other hand, Protestants have an elusive style of Christianity by
simply preaching God's words and recognizing their priests being regular ... Show more content on

However, when Queen Mary I claimed the throne she converted back to Catholicism. She even
earned the name "Bloody Mary" for killings done, creating blood between religions for years. Even
if this is the case, a number of protestants still supported Mary's rise to the throne since she was
perceived as the legitimate heir to throne in spite of others intent for Lady Jane Grey. For the same
reason that the Protestants approved of Mary's notwithstanding their religious differences, Elizabeth
also held the backing of most Catholics. However, the cases are different. Comparatively, the reign
of Mary was short enough to deal the same issues of loyalty among radical Protestants that
Elizabeth had to deal with from a minority of Catholics, more specifically Jesuits. At the dawn of
English Reformation, there were various ways in professing religious beliefs between Protestants
and Catholics. It is notable that Protestants broke away from the Church of England into different
faction in directions that Henry VIII barely predicted. This way, the reign of Elizabeth marks the rise
of Puritanism along with the return of Marian exiles . Although there were persistent flaws in terms
of rituals, people began to see the Church of England as an entity that can still be shaped and
furnished "into a godlier community of Christians".

Religious Conflicts: The Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War did not emerge merely as a class conflict; the dispute was also a religious
conflict that had some of the characteristic of the insurgencies that occurred in Eastern Europe. Such
as in Poland, the Catholic Church in Spain counterpoised the Communist administration. The most
notable countermovement in Poland was Solidarity, which sought a wide–reaching change in the
ethical principles that guided Communism and which in most cases was advocated through
powerful religious rhetoric and connotations. Moreover, the emergence and growth of Solidarity and
therefore the downfall of the Polish Communist regime was to a great extend caused by Pope John
Paul II and the visits he paid to his native Poland. John Paul II drew forth ... Show more content on

They came to the same conclusion as Britain did: a direct action in Spain would almost certainly
cause a strong reaction by Germany and Italy. It was not until a meeting in August 8, 1936 that the
French government explicitly and officially adopted neutrality in the conflict. The determinant
factors that caused Blum to accept neutrality were the following: the realization of the likelihood of
an European war arising from the conflict in Spain, the absence of British backing, the inner
disunity within his government, and because of the danger that socialist extremists posed by
threatening to dissipate the French Popular Front

The Religious Aspect Of Social Conflict Theory
When you are a teen and have big aspirations of opening your own boutique one day, you know that
you will need money and a lot of job experience. At the age of 17, Samantha Elauf was preparingg
for her future, preparing to chase after her aspirations, when Abercrombie & Fitch, an upscale
American retailer, decided that her scarf clashed with the company 's dress code. Samantha Elauf
was born in the United States, was and still is a United States citizen, and she is of Muslim faith.
The "scarf" that Abercrombie & Fitch said clashed was her hijab, a symbol of modesty in her faith.
This became a major Supreme Court case and a United States Court of Appeals case between
Abercrombie & Fitch and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission whom was working on
behalf of Mrs. Elauf. This case and these arguments are an example of the religious aspect of social
conflict theory. Stratification, what social conflict theory originates from, is the way a society is
"organized". There is a class, rank, etc. Some people are "placed" at a higher level than others, it is
very unequal. Social conflict theory is a way to show inequality through religion, race, age, sex, and
how these inequalities generate social changes and conflicts. There is a need to help the majority
while allowing the minority to be hurt or unheard. In the case of Samantha Elauf, it was her
religious beliefs that were being impeded upon and it created a conflict that did go to court. The

Conflicts over Religion
How did religious conflicts influence colonization?
Another chief source of conflict was religion. The Protestant Reformation challenged the authority
of the Roman Catholic Church, and Catholics and Protestants struggled for religious, economic, and
political power. Alliances changed when new rulers assumed power; for instance, a country that was
officially Protestant one day could become Catholic the next. Likewise, countries that were allies

Catholics and Protestants used any means possible to conquer and convert each other, including
laws, taxes, threats, torture, imprisonment, and war. Jews in Europe were typically tolerated but
forced to live in ghettos, isolated from Christian communities. Anyone who dissented from the
established religion had a good reason to leave. To members of a persecuted group who wanted to
live in a community of like–minded people, the "New World" must have been very tempting.
Roanoke: First English Colony in North America
The story of Roanoke, the first English colony in North America, shows some of the ways in which
political, economic, and religious competition affected colonization. In 1585, Queen Elizabeth I of
England agreed to support the Dutch against the Spanish. She gave a charter of land to an English
noble, Sir Walter Raleigh, to establish a colony. This colony would supply the English warships that
would fight the Spanish.
However, the plan failed when colonists discovered the warships could not navigate the Roanoke
harbor's shallow waters. The expedition left more than 100 settlers to establish the colony. England
left these colonists alone for three years while it fought against Spain. When a supply ship finally
arrived, the Roanoke Colony was deserted. To this day, nobody knows what happened to the

Essay about Religious Conflicts with the Iranian Government
The middle–east has always been a hot zone for religious and political conflict but more
specifically, Iran. Iran is an Islamic state where Islam is practiced within politics. The Constitution
of 1979 runs off of the basis of Islamic Law. The population of Iran varies upon resources but they
are all around the number of seventy million people. The country is 90 percent Shia Muslim and
eight–percent Sunni Muslim.1 The rest of the country is made up of very small minority religions.
The minority religions have very little influence in the country and are easily thrown around by the

The Islamic Republic of Iran has a three branch government: Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary.
The Executive branch is headed by the president who is the second most powerful government
official. The president is elected by a national majority vote and is limited to two four year terms,
similar to the United States' president. The Assembly of Experts evaluate the leader's actions and
meet with him annually to discuss his performance. The president can also be impeached by two
thirds vote of the Majlis, or parliament.6 The Supreme Leader is the commander–in–chief of the
military. He appoints all commanders in the armed forces. The Supreme Leader also appoints the
head of the judicial branch, sets state policy, declares war, and starts amendments and sees over
them. The President must be, according to the Constitution, a Shia Muslim. The president selects
many vice presidents and 21 ministers who make up his cabinet. How the president and the leader
separate power has changed with the leaders in control. When Rafsanjani was in office through the
1990's he made himself the law and left little room for the president to use his power.7 The
legislative branch has a Majlis and the Guardians Council. The Majlis is a board of 290 deputies and
they serve a four year terms and are elected by the people. Seeing as the majority is Shia Muslims,
five seats are reserved for special religious minorities.

Religious Conflict Of Dante 's Inferno
Jessica Gay World Literature Dr. Schott 9 November 2014 Religious Conflict in Dante's Inferno
Critics Daniel Tompsett and Donald Winchester and literary scholar Nicole Rudick have argued that
Dante's Inferno is a dark and hopeless telling of how we are all relegated to sin and lack the will or
righteousness to turn from sin and temptation. Tompsett and Winchester state that, "The placement
of living figures in each section was a judgment and a condemnation, albeit subjective, on both
history and the people he knew (Tompsett)." They both agree that Dante is painting a picture of the
dredges of society and the torture that they must endure as a result of their inability to turn from sin.
They also quote scholar David H. Higgins to say that "Dante arguably believed he was writing a
gospel to convert his recalcitrant age (Tompsett)." Scholar and critic Nicole Rudick confirms this
portrayal of dismal hopelessness with her comment, "Dante created a rigid view of good and evil,
showing no mercy for those who did not repent during their lifetimes and sparing no one in his
accounting of misdeeds, vice, immorality, and generally inappropriate comportment (Rudick 29)." It
is my opinion that the aforementioned scholars and critics are missing Dante's point. When I read
the poem I am overcome with quite the opposite view. I believe that a better way to interpret Dante's
poem is to consider that he was asking each of us to reflect on our waywardness and sin and to come

Jihad as a political word was first recorded during the struggle of the Meccan establishment by
Prophet Mohammed. The early movement of Muslims, first under their Prophet and later his

organizations of the community were centered on structure, movements, decision–making systems
and political agendas. The five pillars of the faith are: witness, prayer, pilgrimage, alms, fasting.

Essay On Voltaire's Candide-Religious Conflict
Religious Conflict in Candide and Our World Today
Candide, the 18th century novel by Voltaire, describes the adventures of a naive young man named
Candide. On his journey, Candide meets many people of different religious persuasions and often
finds them in violent conflict. In the novel, as in the modern world, people often act violently
towards each other, based on religion. Voltaire's beliefs are that, everyone should serve God how
they want to instead of being demanded how to serve God from religious officials. The characters in
this work are mostly negative, except the Brethren predecessor, the Anabaptist, and the old woman.

looked at as a punishment and not a reward. Voltaire, shows that this is a prime example that
religious figures see their occupation as a punishment as well. It seems that priesthood is something

How is religious conflict at the center of American society? Religion is a vital part of American
society during the Puritan era because the Puritan system of government was a theocracy. The
Puritans of the early colonies in America linked their moral standards with official laws. "The
Puritans brought strong religious beliefs to bear in all colonies north of Virginia. Ministers had great
political influence, and civil authorities exercised a large measure of control over church affairs."

Religion In James Agee's A Death In The Family
Whether a person is religious or not, everyone has a different viewpoint on religion. Some people
see religion as a helping hand, something that is meant to do good. Others see it as a negative force
used for "evil" and to cause harm. A lot of people have no opinion on the matter whatsoever. One of
the main themes in James Agee's novel is religion and the causes of it. In A Death in the Family, the
characters are very set in stone with their beliefs. While one character turns to their religion for
comfort after a tragedy, another uses a person's lack of beliefs as a reason not to perform an act for
their family. Throughout Agee's novel, religion is used as a constructive force for some characters
and destructive for other characters.

Religious Conflicts Between Christians And Muslims
The symposium was very interesting as it brought many different views on the religious conflict
going on in the Middle East as well as all over the world. The speakers discussed the religious
conflicts between Christians and Muslims as well between different groups of Muslims. In this
paper, I will summarize what I learned and give my analysis of the situation. Additionally, I will
discuss a few things that I learned about the ISIS movement. The speakers each described a few
important points that contribute to the conflict. The first major point is that each culture has an
ideology that believes itself to be perfect. This causes the followers of each faith to be hostile to
each other because they think that they are right and the others are always wrong. While I believe
there is some truth in every religion, there is also faults in every religion. Considering your own
culture to be perfect just doesn't make sense to me. If your religion requires you to believe in it to go
to Heaven, what about people of other religions? Do they all go to Hell because they believe in a
different faith? This just doesn't seem right. Let's compare a rapist to a priest and they both follow
different religions. If the rapist follows the "right" religion, he is saved and the priest is damned
even though the priest lived a highly moral life. This scenario is an exaggeration but I'm sure you
get the point. How is it fair that you have to pick and choose the right religion in order to be saved?

Religious Conflicts In Reuven's The Chosen
In The Chosen _____ discusses many topics around Judaism; some of these topics include: core
beliefs of the religion, covenant, choosiness, holidays, assimilation and many other concepts. One of
the main things I learned when reading this novel was the differences amongst the Judaism spectrum
of religion and how this can create different conflicts or tensions among the people. Among these
conflicts the concept of what to do with the holy land has very different perspectives among
Reuven's Reform Judaism and Danny Hasidic Judaism.
Reform Judaism focuses on, change and growth, scientific inquiry, critical evaluation and is looked
at as one of the most modern branches of Judaism (Cowling, 274). Reuven was brought up in this
branch of Judaism. His father states in The Chosen that, "Some Jews say we should wait for God to

American Jewry! And Palestine must become a Jewish homeland!" (196–197). What he is

A.D. In it, Charlemagne and his men, weary in their seventh year of battle against pagan forces in
Spain, have captured every heathen stronghold but the kingdom of Saragossa, held by the Muslim
king Marsile. Terrified of the might of Charlemagne's army, Marsile promises treasures, hostages
and his conversion to Christianity if the Franks will go back to France. However, Marsile has no
intention of surrendering and wants only for Charlemagne to end his siege of the city and get out of
Spain. Charlemagne does not trust Marsile but nevertheless accepts the proposal despite his nephew,
Roland's, objections. Roland nominates his stepfather, Ganelon, as a messenger to go back to
Marsile's court. Ganelon initially protests but is forced to accept the dangerous commission. He
fears that he'll die in the hands of the bloodthirsty pagans and publicly vows that, "As long as I live,

Religion Affects Daily Life
How does Religion Affect Daily Lives?
" The purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticise others."– Dalai Lama. Religion is not
something people blindly follow for the hope of reaching heaven. At one point or another in life,
every person encounters the moment where they make the decision of being an active religious
person, a religious person but don't attend church, or don't believe in a superior power. Whether a
person chooses option one, two, or three, each choice brings consequences and a different life with
that choice. People live a different kind of life, with different goals to reach, and what kind of life a
person may want to live. Religion has a profound effect on people's daily lives, and the areas it
affects are work life, family life, and the standards a person holds.
Work Life
It happens to everyone, people are at work (or school) and have a project due on Monday, but they
see the clock ticking closer and closer to 5pm, and have that urge to slip out a few mins early so

consequence of doing this is the person having to choose whether to finish the project on Saturday,
Sunday, or if the person really wants to push it, Monday morning. So what option are you going to
take?

Ethnic and Religious Conflict in Nigeria
Analysis of the challenges of religion and ethnicity on political stability in Nigeria's fourth republic
(1999–2011)
INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
Basically, Nigeria is a plural society and heterogeneous in virtually all the facet of life. The custom
and tradition of Nigerians is so diverse to the extent that Nigeria as a country is now confronted with
the problem of religion and ethnicity towards their political stability.
The origin and history of ethnic conflict (societal wars and violence) can be traced from eternal
(internal) state rivalry to external (physical). And its root cause is not very far from power
competition and decision making over economic resources and other important human factor, like
position. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This article is focused on the historical incidents of ethnic conflicts in within Nigeria societies, the
cause of the conflicts and perhaps, the government actions towards ethnic conflict in the country. In
conclusion, this paper will explore into decision–making (by the elites and those in authority)
process has contributed immensely in generating the syndromes of conflict in the said state.
The Nigerian political situation has witnessed more breaking of heads, than counting them. In fact,
even when it has been convenient for heads to be counted, the outcome has always been the
breaking of heads instead. Conflict in Nigeria is so intense because of lack of democratic behaviour.
The head of the individual in the democratic context signifies citizenship. So when heads are broken
in the Nigerian political community, the issue in respect of broken heads is citizenship. If conflict in
Nigeria means the absence of democratic behaviour, it follows, therefore, that conflict in Nigeria is
interwoven with the absence of democratic governance. Gurr (2000): has also shown that the
incidence of conflicts at the global level declined in recent years with the deepening of
democratisation. Nation–states where conflicts persist are those where what obtains is the
democratisation of disempowerment (Ake 1996). Beyond the veneer of elections, the state remains
ambushed, privatised, repressive and unpopular. The people who were tantalised by the

The 14th century is marked by various religious and political conflicts. Specifically, Italy
experienced major civil discord as emperors, popes, and elite families sought governmental control.
It is within these tense times that Dante lived and wrote his poetic masterpiece, Commedia.
Although little is known for certain about Dante, scholars believe he was born in 1265 and lived in
Florence for the majority of his adult life. While Dante was by no means poor, his family was not
wealthy enough to achieve elite status, so he became involved with politics. In 1302, Dante was
exiled from Florence for numerous reasons, including political complicity and opposition to the
pope, resulting in him traveling throughout various Italian towns until ... Show more content on

Passing through the Hellgate and the surrounding area, which was an ante–inferno to torment people
who were neither good nor evil, Dante and Virgil come upon the Acheron River where the boatman
Charon ferries souls into Hell. Dante uses the Greek figure Charon to represent the 14th century
religious belief that St. Peter held the keys to Heaven. When Charon questions Dante and Virgil's
mission into Hell, Virgil tells him that God has willed it, and Charon steps aside and allows Dante
and Virgil to enter the boat. Just as Charon acted as chauffer between one world and the next,
Christians at this time believed St. Peter held the keys to Heaven and moderated who entered. Dante
draws on both of these perspectives when describing the people who were not accepted by either
Heaven or Hell because they were neither good nor evil. Just as Charon can refuse neutral souls
from entering Hell, St. Peter can prevent lukewarm Christians from entering Heaven. By creating an
ante–inferno area where in–between souls experience constant agony and torture, such as being
attacked by insects and eaten by worms, Dante encourages people to choose either salvation or sin,
but not live heretical lives. The linking of Charon and St. Peter, especially regarding neutral
believers, demonstrates that although there may be some gray areas, like the ante–inferno,

Religious Conflict In Beowulf

  • 1. Religious Conflict In Beowulf Jeskin howard p#8th 9/18/17 Religion conflict This essay will elaborate and on the conflict between beowulf and christian ideals of pride and eternal reward. In beowulf, there are situations where the main character does things for fame and rewards instead of the greater goods of the people of kingdom . In beowulf there is a conflict between morals seen by the christian religion and human humility . throughout the christian view it is said or felt that man can and will survive only through the protection of God, that all earthly gifts flow from God, and that the proper bearing of man is to be humble and unselfish. "Afterwards a boy–child was sent to Shield, a cub in the yard, a comfort scent by God to that nation. He knew what they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cultural, religious and language conflicts in Bless Me, Ultima Bless Me, Ultima, written by Rudolfo Anaya and published in 1972, has become one of the most widely read as well as critically acclaimed novels in the Chicano literature. It is first in the trilogy of novels by Anaya, with Heart of Aztlan (1976) and Tortuga (1979) following it. This novel can be viewed from many angles as well as layers, as it intertwines issues or themes of psychological maturation, social changes, identity crisis and importantly cultural conflict, all into coherent and interesting story of a young boy and his guide. Antonio Márez y Luna or Antonio is the young protagonist who with the guidance of his curandera (Traditional Native American healer) and mentor, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Antonio feels so much pressure from both the sides that it gets reflected in his dream, where again the conflict between his father and mother reaches an 'incensed' state, with Antonio being 'facilitated' to adopt their respective sides. His internal conflict gets managed in a positive direction, when Ultima makes the entry and tries to solve his predicament, by suggesting him to combine best of both his parents' culture as well as their wishes. The second cultural plus religious conflict happens when Antonio tussles mentally to believe and accept Catholic God. This is an extension of the above conflict, because Antonio gets torn between his mother influenced Catholicism based Spanish culture and his father's indigenous roots. However, after learning about the Golden Carp story and from his experiences, Antonio questions the existence of Catholic god. He further doubts god's presence, as many evil things are going on under his watch, without any stopping. Towards the end, with the guidance of Ultima, Antonio comes to the understanding that one can form their own religion based on their beliefs from various religious sources. The third language conflict makes the appearance when Antonio goes to school, where English is the medium of instruction. With Antonio being raised in the 'hotbed' of indigenous cultures, where he was taught only Spanish, he struggles to grasp and learn English. He finds the behaviour of the children in his classroom quite alien to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Religious Conflict Between The Nazis And Jehovah 's Witnesses Religious Conflict between the Nazis and Jehovah's Witnesses In World War 2 many religions were being persecuted and punished "because of their perceived "racial inferiority": Roma (Gypsies), the disabled, and some of the Slavic peoples (Poles, Russians, and others). Other groups were persecuted on political, ideological, and behavioral grounds, among them Communists, Socialists, Jehovah 's Witnesses, and homosexuals," states The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum . Jehovah's Witnesses were persecuted for the reason that they did not follow the Nazi's ways and did not fight in the war with or against them. Many died because the Nazis would shoot them, put them in hot furnaces, or gas rooms where they would put a poisonous gas in a room where some witnesses were locked up in and eventually died in the poisonous room. In the concentration camps, the only way to be free and leave the concentration camp was to sign a paper saying that they will convert and become a follower of the Nazis. There was one experience that was really surprising to many. One of the leaders of a concentration camp had lined up some of Jehovah's Witnesses to see who will convert to a Nazi. Very few said that they will and so once the leader saw who will convert and who would not he said, "Those who said that they will convert and follow Hitler will be killed because how can we trust you if you had just betrayed your own religion." In the end those who said that they will convert, were killed, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Religious Conflict in Russia RELIGIOUS CONFLICT IN RUSSIA One of the great ironies of history is that Marxism, an atheistic theory, was first implemented in Russia—a land inhabited by millions of believers practicing most of the world's great religions. In fact, religion is so integral to the culture and history of Russia, it would be impossible to gain a full understanding for the unique character of the country and its people without a careful examination of the religious factors at play throughout its history. BACKGROUND Basic Demographics Any discussion of Russia must begin with its single most striking feature—its sheer vastness. During World War II, a German general noted how his troops "were depressed by the monotony of the landscape and the immensity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In terms of languages, Russian is the common official language throughout the Federation, understood by 99 percent of its current inhabitants and widespread in many adjacent areas of Asia and Eastern Europe. However, national subdivisions of Russia have additional official languages, further reflecting the diverse ethnicity of the country. As a result, there are more than 100 languages spoken throughout the nation, most tied to the particular ethnic groups from which they sprang. Economics and Education Perhaps the most significant impact of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 has been the economic chaos which subsequently consumed the country. For five years following the collapse, Russia saw its comparatively developed centrally planned economy contract severely. It was not until 1997 that Russia began to show signs of recovery as a result of its new open–market policies. Since that time, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country has grown by an average of 6.7 percent per year, largely on the back of oil exports, as well as a steadily developing service and industrial output. Currently, Russia's GDP by purchasing power parity (PPP) is approximately $1.5 trillion, making it the ninth largest economy in the world and the fifth largest in Europe. If this growth rate is sustained, the country will become the second largest European economy after Germany and the sixth largest in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We have learned about many different cultures, religions, changing of religions, wars, and expansion. These major events that took place was not only monumental at the time, but it also changed the world forever. Whether it was Hitler or Christopher Columbus the people that we have learned about in this class were truly changed the world good and bad for many generations to come. The three major themes that our class has talked about was technological advancements, religious conflicts, and the impact of political revolution. This was definitely one of the biggest revolutions ever. Huge industries went to Europe and paid workers low wages to work and create materials much faster and efficient than ever before. It was much faster because unlike ever before they used machines to produce materials instead of trying to produce it by hand. There were some good and bad things that came with this revolution. Many people lost their business because they could not produce items as effectively and the machines could and therefor they lost their business. The working conditions were awful for the workers. Many of the machines were dangerous to use and because of that some of the workers were badly injured or killed; also the conditions were very dirty which caused sickness for the workers. The wages of the workers were very low which cause the poverty to be very high. Even though there were bad things that came with the Industrial revolution, there were also a lot of pivotal inventions that changed the production of goods forever. • 6. Religious Conflicts In The Canterbury Tales The Canterbury Tales is a collection of 24 stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer. The tales are about a group of Pilgrims traveling to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at the Canterbury Cathedral. Out of the 24 tales I have chosen the Prioress to be my favorite. The Prioress was my first choice because the religious aspect of the tale and how religious conflict has been such a huge problem for life back then and now. The Prioress tale starts off with a prologue. The Prologue is about the Prioress (Madame Eglentyne) praying to the Virgin Mary. Then, the prioress tale begins. This tale is placed in Asia and is about a boy who walks through a Jewish ghetto in a Christian city. The boy is singing O Alma Redemptoris, a salute to the Blessed Lady, while walking through the Jewish ghetto. This angers the Jewish people who were listening to the words of the devil. They then hired a murder who slit the boy's throat and threw him in a pit. The boy's widow mother then goes searching for her son and begging everyone, including the Jews, to tell her where her son was. She then gets an idea from Jesus to sing where her son was thrown in the pit. Although the boy's throat was slit, he begins to sing his Alma Redemptoris. Amazed by the boys singing, fellow Christians ran to the pit and went to get the provost. The Prioress was a religious figure in her tale and therefore making her part of the ecclesiastical class. Through the ages, religion has both unified and divided civilizations often bringing extreme human casualty, in the case of division, or creating interesting new cultures, in the case of the latter. In the Ancient civilizations such as the Greek, Kush and Egyptian empires religion serves as a catalyst further strengthening the bond found in such homogeneous societies. In these civilizations it is important to note that the inhabitants did not conceive of religion in terms of a belief system in a higher moral authority, rather, the belief system was such a part of their lifestyle that there was no differentiation. In discussing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, three distinctions can be outlined in this discussion. Firstly, religion serves as a catalyst further unifying homogeneous civilizations such as the Greek, Ku*censored*e and Egyptian societies, secondly, religion serves as a primary focus of difference when two homogeneous societies, such as the Muslims and the Christians involve themselves in a conflict for spiritual dominance, and, thirdly, how religion, in some homogenous societies such as the Protestant Reformation of the late Tudor and early Stuart dynasties in England, serves to divide the people. Religious observance in ancient civilizations serves to further bridge the connectedness that the people of those societies felt. In the ancient Greek, Ku*censored*e and and Egyptian cultures religion was such a integral part of their lifestyle that it was totally indistinguishable in terms of contemporary classifications. The ancient Greeks held close to a common polytheistic belief system and operated the government, domestic lifestyle, and recreation from this system. In the earlier half of the 17th Century, the Puritans have consistently sought for reforms to make changes to the English Church, with an unfaltering insistence of removing any perceived popish practices to create church in the model of a more traditional Calvinism. He should not, however, go as far as to proclaim that there was no 'rise of Arminianism' as there was indeed an ostensible influx of Arminianism during the reign of Charles I. Arminianism did burgeoned steadily, especially under the quasi–Catholic policies of Charles I and innovations that William Laud brought to the Church. However, with or without the antagonistic ideological differences of Arminianism and Calvinism, there was always the constant seeking of reforms by the Puritans, to move as far away from Catholicism as possible. The introduction of Arminianism merely 'created a politically assertive Puritanism '. The fear that Arminian practices would force the English Church towards a more Catholic–liked system invoked fear amongst the Puritans resulting in a 'call for more sweeping changes'. The Puritans wanted change before any major form of Arminianism took shape and with the latter's increasing influence from the 1620s, puritans simply became more aggressive in seeking reforms. Managing Religious Conflict in Therapy Running Head: MANAGING RELIGIOUS CONFLICT Managing Religious Conflict within Psychotherapy Ryan Hagen UMASS Lowell Abstract This paper discusses the relationship of religion and psychology within the setting of interpersonal dynamic psychotherapy. It raises the question of whether and to what extent religion should be included in a therapeutic setting. Varying perspectives on this issue are reviewed, followed by an examination of the consequences of addressing religion within therapy. Several examples are offered of potential pit falls a therapist may encounter in this situation as well as suggestions for minimizing the likelihood of these occurrences. In 1989, Richards, in a study of 100 Mormon patients, found that they were more trusting of therapists who disclosed a belief in god. A lot of this depends on the patient. Quackenbos (et al 1986) outlined four viewpoints or degrees of involvement a person may have with their religion, and how it is used to interpret mental health. The four viewpoints are orthodox, moderate, neutralist and atheistic. These lay on a continuum, where those with orthodox viewpoints believe mental problems are caused by sin, and on the other end, atheistic sees mental problems as purely psychological. Another framework was proposed by Batson and Ventis (1982). They argued that a therapist's need to understand the different ways of being religious in order to understand the impact that religion may or may not have on their patient. They created their framework around 3 dimensions, each of which has it's own continuum. The 3 dimensions are quest, ends and means. The 'quest' continuum measures the degree of importance the individual places on existential questions, but does not necessarily feel an urgency to have answered. An example of this would be an agnostic, or a philosopher who enjoys the process of examining these kinds of questions. A person on the high end of this continuum would tend to have doubts about religion, and be tentative about religious viewpoints. The 'means' continuum ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is generally considered by most readers that the initial chapters don't consist of the religious and spiritual makeup of the townspeople but in fact, religion is subliminally present even earlier, within the title of the novel itself. The word "Death" is integrally and inextricably linked with religious matter. After all, birth and the inevitably of death are the two most important and debatable points in religion. Religion is meant to be a solid force, helping society to bond better and progress in a civilized manner. For the same purpose, religion, with its laws and codes of conduct, monitors peoples' way of life to ensure that humanity remains ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, Marquez underlines, "Both were exhausted from the barbarous work of death..." (49). Marquez exemplifies the way in which some aspects of religion are ignored and some have great emphasis put on them. When Roman finds out that his new bride is not a virgin, he returns her. She is beaten savagely, and her brothers are called from the brothel to come defend the family's honor. The hypocrisy of family is revealed as they consider honor to be a part of the religion and instead of religiously and peacefully solve the manner, the brothers murder Santiago Nasar. The family believes that upholding the honor is righteous, and in doing so the sin of murdering Nasar is downplayed. Furthermore, when the brothers put down their knives in front of the priest, instead of giving them advice or condemning them, the priest "recalled the surrender as an act of dignity" (49). This is in total conflict with Catholicism as it is amongst the Ten Commandments that "Thou shall not kill" and thus it illustrates that even the priest of the town has lost the knowledge of the true religion. Marquez cements the corruption of religion as even father Amador protected the brothers and not only him but "the lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor, which was upheld by the court in good faith" (48). Marquez continues to demonstrate that the society was lenient on the brothers due to tradition and thus it illustrates that religion was only a minor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Religion And Its Effect On Society Religion plays a large role in today's society, it's used to comfort us in our greatest times of need as well as explain seemingly unknowable questions, such as what is the meaning of life, why are we here, what happens when we die, why do we suffer but now as in the past religion can be a harmful factor in our society. It has been the cause of wars, witch hunts, and proliferated superstition. Today there are such laws that allow a parent to deny their child adequate medical care even if it's to treat a potentially life threatening illness. In other cases religion is cited as a reason to deny someone access to birth control. In school's modern science is at times having to contend with creationism which seems to be a reinterpreting of modern science and is in complete opposition with established facts. Other times such things as sex education is taught inaccurately which then leaders to things such as high rates of teen pregnancies and STD's spreading. In other countries these actions are at times more extreme such as when we hear about suicide bombings, honor killing, and the like. In this paper I will discuss a few of these topics that I find to be pertinent, yet the topics are many. I will discuss the harms that such actions can cause to us as a society both socially and physically due to such harmful laws, I will also discuss the social reasons as to why such actions are performed in the first place and why they may be found to be socially acceptable. For example, Anglicans, who conformed to the Church of England, populated Virginia. Massachusetts was home to the Puritans. Pennsylvania was full of Quakers. Baptists ruled in Rhode Island. And Roman Catholics found a haven in Maryland, where they could establish themselves amid the other colonists' protestant majority. Each of these colonies maintained a distinct religious character and favored one religious denomination's power. The American colonists saw the revolution not only as a war for political independence, but to protect the religious diversity of the thirteen colonies. Put in other terms, it was a war for religious independence and freedom. To sever ties with Mother England would be to ensure that the various Christian denominations could co–exist on the American continent. The conflict was, in part, a conflict that pitted the various American religious denominations against the Church of England, who wanted to impose a uniform, Anglican religion on the colonies. Anti–Semitism was been around for many generations, and it ranges from a conflict of religious identity and national identity. The holocaust took place 70 years ago and people claim that it was the stem of Anti–Semitism, but Anti–Semitism goes as far back as the fourth century, and ultimately helped pave the path for the Holocaust. Medieval Anti–Semitism took place during the time where the Jews lived under the dominant religion of Christianity under the Roman Empire in Europe. The Jews during this period suffered from the crusade, blood libels, and hatred from the Christians. This then transitioned into National Anti–Semitism, which took place during the Enlightenment. Many people during this time were almost "Patriotic" people believed highly in loyalty to their nation, Jews being the outsiders, who did not share many of the attributes these people had such as language or history were a targets for this National anti Semitism (modern Anti– Semitism). Religious Conflict Of Dante 's Inferno Jessica Gay World Literature Dr. Schott 9 November 2014 Religious Conflict in Dante's Inferno Critics Daniel Tompsett and Donald Winchester and literary scholar Nicole Rudick have argued that Dante's Inferno is a dark and hopeless telling of how we are all relegated to sin and lack the will or righteousness to turn from sin and temptation. Tompsett and Winchester state that, "The placement of living figures in each section was a judgment and a condemnation, albeit subjective, on both history and the people he knew (Tompsett)." They both agree that Dante is painting a picture of the dredges of society and the torture that they must endure as a result of their inability to turn from sin. They also quote scholar David H. Higgins to say that "Dante arguably believed he was writing a gospel to convert his recalcitrant age (Tompsett)." Scholar and critic Nicole Rudick confirms this portrayal of dismal hopelessness with her comment, "Dante created a rigid view of good and evil, showing no mercy for those who did not repent during their lifetimes and sparing no one in his accounting of misdeeds, vice, immorality, and generally inappropriate comportment (Rudick 29)." It is my opinion that the aforementioned scholars and critics are missing Dante's point. When I read the poem I am overcome with quite the opposite view. He had no money, and this was the only thing he could do to live (Voltaire 146). Therefore, in Brother Giroflée situation being a religious figure is looked at as a punishment and not a reward. Voltaire, shows that this is a prime example that religious figures see their occupation as a punishment as well. It seems that priesthood is something you have to learn to like than to love it. In addition, I asked his mother Nicole G questions that Terrance did not know the answer to. The interview took place in the living room of their home Saturday afternoon. Also, he speaks with a deep voice due to the changes that adolescence occur at that age. His hair was neatly trimmed and he was casually dressed in sweats and t–shirt. • 31. Religion In James Agee's A Death In The Family Whether a person is religious or not, everyone has a different viewpoint on religion. Some people see religion as a helping hand, something that is meant to do good. Others see it as a negative force used for "evil" and to cause harm. A lot of people have no opinion on the matter whatsoever. One of the main themes in James Agee's novel is religion and the causes of it. In A Death in the Family, the characters are very set in stone with their beliefs. While one character turns to their religion for comfort after a tragedy, another uses a person's lack of beliefs as a reason not to perform an act for their family. Throughout Agee's novel, religion is used as a constructive force for some characters and destructive for other characters. Arguably ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 33. Religious Conflicts Between Christians And Muslims The symposium was very interesting as it brought many different views on the religious conflict going on in the Middle East as well as all over the world. The speakers discussed the religious conflicts between Christians and Muslims as well between different groups of Muslims. In this paper, I will summarize what I learned and give my analysis of the situation. Additionally, I will discuss a few things that I learned about the ISIS movement. The speakers each described a few important points that contribute to the conflict. The first major point is that each culture has an ideology that believes itself to be perfect. This causes the followers of each faith to be hostile to each other because they think that they are right and the others are always wrong. While I believe there is some truth in every religion, there is also faults in every religion. Considering your own culture to be perfect just doesn't make sense to me. If your religion requires you to believe in it to go to Heaven, what about people of other religions? Do they all go to Hell because they believe in a different faith? This just doesn't seem right. Let's compare a rapist to a priest and they both follow different religions. If the rapist follows the "right" religion, he is saved and the priest is damned even though the priest lived a highly moral life. This scenario is an exaggeration but I'm sure you get the point. How is it fair that you have to pick and choose the right religion in order to be saved? ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Religious Conflicts In Reuven's The Chosen In The Chosen _____ discusses many topics around Judaism; some of these topics include: core beliefs of the religion, covenant, choosiness, holidays, assimilation and many other concepts. One of the main things I learned when reading this novel was the differences amongst the Judaism spectrum of religion and how this can create different conflicts or tensions among the people. Among these conflicts the concept of what to do with the holy land has very different perspectives among Reuven's Reform Judaism and Danny Hasidic Judaism. Reform Judaism focuses on, change and growth, scientific inquiry, critical evaluation and is looked at as one of the most modern branches of Judaism (Cowling, 274). Reuven was brought up in this branch of Judaism. His father states in The Chosen that, "Some Jews say we should wait for God to send the Messiah! We cannot wait for God! We must make our own Messiah. We must rebuild American Jewry! And Palestine must become a Jewish homeland!" (196–197). What he is expressing through this quote is that if people want to see a change in the earth that they were going to have to do it themselves. In it, Charlemagne and his men, weary in their seventh year of battle against pagan forces in Spain, have captured every heathen stronghold but the kingdom of Saragossa, held by the Muslim king Marsile. Terrified of the might of Charlemagne's army, Marsile promises treasures, hostages and his conversion to Christianity if the Franks will go back to France. However, Marsile has no intention of surrendering and wants only for Charlemagne to end his siege of the city and get out of Spain. Charlemagne does not trust Marsile but nevertheless accepts the proposal despite his nephew, Roland's, objections. Roland nominates his stepfather, Ganelon, as a messenger to go back to Marsile's court. Ganelon initially protests but is forced to accept the dangerous commission. He fears that he'll die in the hands of the bloodthirsty pagans and publicly vows that, "As long as I live, I shall have no love for [Roland]" (Song 39). Ganelon has long been jealous of Roland, and on his diplomatic mission he finds an opportunity for revenge. Ganelon advises Marsile that the only way to make Charlemagne leave Spain forever is to bring about Roland's death. • 38. Religion Affects Daily Life How does Religion Affect Daily Lives? " The purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticise others."– Dalai Lama. Religion is not something people blindly follow for the hope of reaching heaven. At one point or another in life, every person encounters the moment where they make the decision of being an active religious person, a religious person but don't attend church, or don't believe in a superior power. Whether a person chooses option one, two, or three, each choice brings consequences and a different life with that choice. People live a different kind of life, with different goals to reach, and what kind of life a person may want to live. Religion has a profound effect on people's daily lives, and the areas it affects are work life, family life, and the standards a person holds. Work Life It happens to everyone, people are at work (or school) and have a project due on Monday, but they see the clock ticking closer and closer to 5pm, and have that urge to slip out a few mins early so they can get ahead of schedule on ordering the wings and pizza and getting good movie tickets. The consequence of doing this is the person having to choose whether to finish the project on Saturday, Sunday, or if the person really wants to push it, Monday morning. So what option are you going to take? Work Smarter, Not Harder Full time committed religious people know the regular weekend schedule. Ethnic and Religious Conflict in Nigeria Analysis of the challenges of religion and ethnicity on political stability in Nigeria's fourth republic (1999–2011) INTRODUCTION Background to the Study Basically, Nigeria is a plural society and heterogeneous in virtually all the facet of life. The custom and tradition of Nigerians is so diverse to the extent that Nigeria as a country is now confronted with the problem of religion and ethnicity towards their political stability. The origin and history of ethnic conflict (societal wars and violence) can be traced from eternal (internal) state rivalry to external (physical). And its root cause is not very far from power competition and decision making over economic resources and other important human factor, like position. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This article is focused on the historical incidents of ethnic conflicts in within Nigeria societies, the cause of the conflicts and perhaps, the government actions towards ethnic conflict in the country. In conclusion, this paper will explore into decision–making (by the elites and those in authority) process has contributed immensely in generating the syndromes of conflict in the said state. The Nigerian political situation has witnessed more breaking of heads, than counting them. In fact, even when it has been convenient for heads to be counted, the outcome has always been the breaking of heads instead. Conflict in Nigeria is so intense because of lack of democratic behaviour. The head of the individual in the democratic context signifies citizenship. So when heads are broken in the Nigerian political community, the issue in respect of broken heads is citizenship. If conflict in Nigeria means the absence of democratic behaviour, it follows, therefore, that conflict in Nigeria is interwoven with the absence of democratic governance. Gurr (2000): has also shown that the incidence of conflicts at the global level declined in recent years with the deepening of democratisation. Nation–states where conflicts persist are those where what obtains is the democratisation of disempowerment (Ake 1996). Beyond the veneer of elections, the state remains ambushed, privatised, repressive and unpopular. The people who were tantalised by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Religious And Political Conflicts In Dante's Inferno The 14th century is marked by various religious and political conflicts. Specifically, Italy experienced major civil discord as emperors, popes, and elite families sought governmental control. It is within these tense times that Dante lived and wrote his poetic masterpiece, Commedia. Although little is known for certain about Dante, scholars believe he was born in 1265 and lived in Florence for the majority of his adult life. While Dante was by no means poor, his family was not wealthy enough to achieve elite status, so he became involved with politics. In 1302, Dante was exiled from Florence for numerous reasons, including political complicity and opposition to the pope, resulting in him traveling throughout various Italian towns until ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Passing through the Hellgate and the surrounding area, which was an ante–inferno to torment people who were neither good nor evil, Dante and Virgil come upon the Acheron River where the boatman Charon ferries souls into Hell. Dante uses the Greek figure Charon to represent the 14th century religious belief that St. Peter held the keys to Heaven. When Charon questions Dante and Virgil's mission into Hell, Virgil tells him that God has willed it, and Charon steps aside and allows Dante and Virgil to enter the boat. Just as Charon acted as chauffer between one world and the next, Christians at this time believed St. Peter held the keys to Heaven and moderated who entered. Dante draws on both of these perspectives when describing the people who were not accepted by either Heaven or Hell because they were neither good nor evil. Just as Charon can refuse neutral souls from entering Hell, St. Peter can prevent lukewarm Christians from entering Heaven. By creating an ante–inferno area where in–between souls experience constant agony and torture, such as being attacked by insects and eaten by worms, Dante encourages people to choose either salvation or sin, but not live heretical lives. The linking of Charon and St. Peter, especially regarding neutral believers, demonstrates that although there may be some gray areas, like the ante–inferno, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
