1. Progress under the MoU between the Ministry of Climate Change and the Aga
Khan Foundation 2018-2021
Climate Change in Pakistan
November 2021
2. Technical and financial support in
agro-forestry, food and livelihoods in
mountainous and resource poor regions
AKF invested strong resources to support communities in the
promotion of sustainable and productive agriculture through:
The construction of 106 passive solar greenhouses, also critical
for vegetable and seedlings in off-seasons
Helping 5,860 acres of land in marginalized valleys brought
under cultivation, benefiting 5627 households.
Providing 8 Bio-Climate Cellar/Storage Facilities
Through other donor-funded project, AKF helped plant 2.5 mllion trees
through the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Programme and developed
nurseries on over 50 kanals of land.
Under ETI GB, AKRSP formed 38 farmers cooperatives to work
exclusively on livelihood related activities within the communities.
New grants were signed through which over 1 million trees will be
planted and 5 additional nurseries to be established on 20 kanals in
the coming years
3. Technical and financial support
for energy security in the mountainous and resource
poor regions of the country
During 2018-2021, AKF supported communities in constructing community-owned and
community-managed micro hydro projects in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral to facilitate access
to clean, affordable and reliable energy for domestic and commercial uses as well as key
service delivery (Hospitals, schools etc)
Under its flagship Building and Construction Improvement
Program (BACIP), AKAH has provided energy efficient
products to 1,558 households, to limit indoor pollution,
reduce fuelwood consumption and improve the quality of life
of the most vulnerable communities
This led to the construction of 13 micro-hydro plants and 1 solar project in
marginalized mountainous valleys which created 2.9 MW of clean
electricity benefiting 6,489 households and helping reduce the pressure
on already lean natural resources.
4. Sharing technical knowledge and strong models
with a focus on resilience building
• Multi-hazard risk mapping through Hazard Vulnerability and Risk
Assessments (MHVRAs) of 12 settlements
• Construction of 60 structural mitigation projects
• Training and capacity building of 2,395 volunteers (under
Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs), Search and
Rescue Teams (SARTS), and Disaster Assessment and Response
Teams (DARTs)) to act as first responders in the event of disasters
• Establishment of 10 community managed stockpiles
• Establishment of 53 community managed Weather Monitoring
Posts and 5 Early Warning Systems in disaster-prone areas
• Creation of 116 Village Disaster Risk Management Plans
(VDRMPs)
Through a distinct and internationally recognized Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) program,
AKAH has enhanced the resilience of 80,000 individuals in the face of mounting disaster
risks and climate vulnerabilities, through the various components of the Community Based
Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) program including:
5. Technical and financial support for access to water
in the mountainous and resource poor
regions of the country
Through its flagship integrated and community-based model, Water and
Sanitation Extension Program (WASEP), AKAH has improved access to
water and sanitation services for more than 17,500 people through
construction and rehabilitation of more than 50 schemes.
As Social Mobilisation Partner for ETI GB, the Aga Khan Rural Support
Programme (AKRSP) helped in constructing 24 irrigation channels and
mobilised communities to sustainably develop 2,000 acres of land
while another 6,000 acres will be developed in the coming years, as
well as 14 irrigation channels to be initiated under ETI GB.
Through financial support from Serena Hotels, 1 irrigation channel and
5 solar lift irrigation projects in GBC were initiated which will be
completed before the coming plantation season (April-May 2022) and
provide irrigation water to 300 kanals of land.
6. Mainstreaming of Climate Change, evidence
building and transfer of knowledge
An MoU was signed between the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat
(AKAH) and the National University of Sciences and Technology
(NUST) Office of Sustainability (Nustainable) for developing
sustainable habitat plans for disaster vulnerable valleys
For knowledge sharing on best practices and in observance of the
World Environment Day, AKAH organized an international seminar
‘ecosystem restoration for quality of life’ in collaboration with the
World Habitat Awards and the Government of Pakistan
To raise awareness on international level on best practices in
climate resilience and DRR in Pakistan, AKAH organized an event in
the green zone of COP 26, UK in collaboration with the World
Habitat Awards and contributions from the GoGB
AKAH and the Aga Khan University, UK are also actively conducting a
research project (funded by British Academy) focused on the
successful Water and Sanitation Extension Program (WASEP) for
scaling up and transferring community-managed climate resilient
rural water systems to urban settings
