This document summarizes a capacity building project in Pakistan to improve water quality monitoring and reporting on SDG 6.1. The 5-year project, funded through the Ministry of Climate Change and KOICA, aims to develop a national water quality monitoring system, strengthen institutions' capacity for SDG 6.1 tracking, and build human resources' testing and monitoring skills. Key objectives include establishing an IT-based water quality monitoring mechanism and building laboratories' capacity. Initial achievements include staff hiring and assessing laboratories' equipment and training needs. Future plans include developing an MIS for reporting, training modules, and upgrading water quality laboratories.

3. Pakistan status of drinking water is 39 % people
have access to safe drinking water free from
bacterial contamination. The base line in 2017
was 36% established based on the data from
PCRWR of 2015 report
(PCRWR water quality report published in 2021)

4. Objectives
A. To develop national/provincial drinking water quality monitoring and surveillance
management system
B. To strengthen the capacity of WASH cell and PHEDs to track progress of SDG-6.1
C. To enhance coordination capacity of WASH Cell on drinking water issues with provincial
governments
D. To build capacity of human resources on water quality testing, monitoring and provision of
necessary equipment
