To achieve its strategic goals, UMBC realized it needed to become a more data-driven institution by deploying more sophisticated tools and procedures to help staff find and analyze data in a timely way. Specifically, the university needed ways that users could develop accurate and easily configurable reports to support operational management decisions and strategic analysis, which a data warehouse made possible. In this talk, Dr. Mozie-Ross will describe how UMBC successfully implemented its data warehouse by resolving campus-wide issues with buy-in, IT partnering with IR, governance, and cost.

Presenter: Brian Irwin Organisation: Sheffield Hallam University Description: In 2013 Sheffield Hallam University approved a set of minimum expectations which outlined what should be on each Blackboard course. In preparation for these expectations becoming policy in 2015, we hired graduate interns to review every taught module (over 3000) and create reports about how well they meet the expectations. During this session we will explain how the minimum expectations were developed. We will describe the review process, highlighting challenges faced and providing recommendations for others. We will share some high level findings of the reviews and example anonymised reports at different levels (e.g module, departmental, faculty). Finally we will explain how we are using the reviews to inform staff development and the feedback we have gotten on the reviews so far.

Are you spending lots of time conducting and marking formative assessments, tracking the learning progress of your students, and providing early intervention so as to help them learn and achieve better grades? If so, using a Learning Management System (LMS) together with a data analytics tool may help to increase your productivity. In this session, we will cover how Blackboard tools can help you conduct assessments in a paperless manner and automate the marking. You will also learn how data analytics can help you turn raw assessment data into meaningful information which will help you identify the 'at-risk' students that need your extra help, the better ones that need more challenging tasks, and the chapters that may need to be delivered with a different pedagogical approach. Hence, with a robust LMS and a data analytics tool, your quality of teaching and students' learning will help to bring about a higher student success rate.

Feedback to students on their work and attainment is at the centre of successful learning in higher education. However many top rated universities find it hard to match high levels of student satisfaction with teaching and learning in general with levels of satisfaction in assessment and feedback. There are many factors which impact the quality of the feedback, and at UEA we are keen that the opportunities to enrich through digitisation are not constrained to the replication of previously paper based practices. For this reason we have initiated a project to harness all of Blackboardäó»s interactive tools to raise the quality of feedback. The overall aim of the project is to embed assessment and feedback in teaching and learning, so that feedback becomes a dialogic process and not a product in itself. This presentation is a report on our progress so far and looks at a range of interventions and their results, as we scale up to campus wide integration of Blackboard assessment and feedback tools. The evidence of impact comes from the academic community and students. We welcome interaction from fellow delegates during the presentation, as we discuss how Blackboard supports us to move forward with feedback.

Committed to providing a supportive and safe educational environment that fosters student engagement and success, James Cook University (JCU) has taken a proactive approach to the use of data in a dual-pronged approach to improve the student experience and curriculum design. Blackboard Analytics for Learn is a key tool within these initiatives. Analytics for Learn provides real-time data that can be used by staff in a variety of roles to support student success. This presentation will outline how JCU is adapting Analytics for Learn, including discussion of initial customisations made to 'out-of-the-box' reports and the development of personalised dashboards, as well as providing an overview of the coordinated approach to the staged 'roll-out' and adoption of reports and dashboards. Delivered at Innovate and Educate: Teaching and Learning Conference by Blackboard. 24 -27 August 2015 in Adelaide, Australia.

The main focus of the presentation is to provide empirical information to support the students' acceptance of Blackboard as an LMS (Learning Management System) to help students to learn better. INTI International University has been using Blackboard to promote and strengthen Blended Learning, and has faced extensive resistance from both students and academic staff at its inception. However, the research now shows that students are increasingly adopting Blackboard as an LMS and are picking up the needed skills for more effective Blended Learning. Although there are still challenges ahead for the University, the Positiveness displayed is most encouraging, and we will continue to strive to make Blended Learning via the employ of Blackboard as the LMS a norm.

Presented at the ELI 2015 conference. In an effort to improve the quantity and quality of online and blended courses taught at Purdue University North Central, a new program was put into place in fall 2014. Based on research in the value of peer mentoring in academic settings, a group of faculty mentors with extensive experience teaching with technology were paired with others who are just getting started. This presentation will describe the program structure, as well as the successes and challenges of the program from the faculty point of view, in order to assist other institutions in exploring similar models for improved faculty development.

As the use of blended learning environments and digital technologies become integrated into the higher education sector, rich technologies such as analytics have the ability to assist teaching staff identify students at risk, learning material that is not proving effective and learning site designs that aid and facilitate improved learning. More recently consideration has been given to automated essay scoring. Such systems can be used in a formative way, such as providing feedback on initial assignment drafts or summatively through the analysis of final assignment submissions. Further, providing students with quick feedback on written assignments opens the opportunity through formative feedback to improved learning outcomes. This presentation details a current project developing a system to analyse text-based assignments. The project is being developed for broad application, but the findings focus on an undergraduate pilot subject: ‘Ideas that Shook the World’ (a compulsory first year Bachelor of Arts subject taught on 5 campuses to more than 1000 students by 15 staff). Preliminary results of a fist scan of assignments are presented and the issues raised in developing the system presented together with an outline of additional work planned for the project. It is believed the work will have wide application where text-based assignments are utilised for assessment.

Presentation by Barry Dahl at the 2018 D2L Connection: London Edition. This session addresses the development of a process that can be used to evaluate the quality of online teaching. The current evaluation processes at many colleges do not specifically address online instruction, and most academic administrators have limited personal experience with online course design and instruction. Two useful documents will be shared in this webinar. The first is a five-part Pre-Evaluation Worksheet. The second document is a five-category rubric for evaluating teaching performance of online instructors. The rubric could be used as a self-evaluation for faculty, as part of a peer review evaluation, or as part of an academic administrator’s evaluation of faculty. These documents are sharable and editable. Use these documents to start a faculty evaluation process or to build upon your existing process.

Course revision is a reality of daily life in higher education. Each semester, faculty review their courses to ensure that they are presenting current concepts and providing proper methods of assessment and interaction for their students. Unfortunately, most review and revision is done during periods of frantic activity just before or during the beginning of the semester. This methodology does not allow for deep consideration of issues and can negatively affect learning for students. Focused revision is a methodology of review that tasks faculty to review a course over a longer period of time and focus on one pedagogical aspect, such as interaction, content presentation, rubric development, etc. Focusing on a specific aspect of a course, to the exclusion of others, increases the efficacy of that aspect of the course while maintaining the current level of quality on the other aspects. This methodology also changes course revision from a summative process to a formative process and allows for the effective inclusion of student feedback into course design. The process also allows faculty to create efficiencies in their process to maximize time and minimize work. Multiple focused revisions may build on each other to create a synergy between course components, thus creating a more effective learning environment in both the physical and the digital classrooms, leading to increased student engagement and learning.

The Last Leaf is a short story by the American writer O. Henry (1862-1910) commonly known in the history of American literature as "the author of surprise ending". It tells the story of an old artist who saves the life of a young neighbouring artist, who is seriously ill and dying, by giving her the will to live. O. Henry knew people very well, especially the ordinary people of New York. In his stories you can feel satirical criticism of the American way of life. Most of his short stories are full of warm sympathy for ordinary American people.

In an age where generative AI is becoming increasingly sophisticated, the potential for fraud and misinformation has reached unprecedented levels. This keynote will begin with a personal case study exploring how the speaker became the target of a generative AI scam, highlighting the convincing nature of these deceptions. Building upon this experience, the talk will delve into the broader implications of generative AI for the spread of misinformation and the erosion of trust in online spaces. As the line between truth and falsehood becomes increasingly blurred, the role of education in equipping individuals with the critical thinking skills needed to navigate this complex landscape becomes paramount. The keynote will argue that empowering postgraduate social science researchers with the tools to critically engage with generative AI is not only essential for their own work but also for the wider fight against misinformation.

Sales margin plays a crucial role in the corporate world as a compass that directs enterprises towards profitability. It is the discrepancy between a good or service's selling price and its production or acquisition costs.
