A-Analyze Learners
Teaching the different types and uses of figurative language to an 8th grade
classroom of below average readers, 12 boys and 9 girls, 90% Caucasian, 5%
African American, 5% Asian, 5 of which have IEPs.
S- State Objectives
Students will recognize and say the 5 parts of figurative language we will be
working with this week. They will match the orthographical depiction of a word
with a corresponding visual/ graphic representation, and an example of the
use. They identify those parts of figurative language in popular songs and state
how that use of figurative language effects the end result of the song. They will
do this by the end of the day with 90% accuracy.

U-Utilizing Media and Materials
The students will use the computers to access the Webquest that I will prepare
for the teaching of the figurative language techniques. On this they will also
find examples of figurative language in music, and work on a Movie that show
examples and definitions to aid them in their gaining knowledge.
R- Require Learner Participation
Students will begin their day with opening the WebQuest provided and learning
about personification. They will complete this task and continue their use of
Movie Maker in showing their gaining knowledge throughout the week. Then
they will listen to popular songs and identify the figurative language that is
used within the music. They will write their responses to the music and also
work in groups to create a one stanza jingle of their own in their reflection
journal that will be shared with the class. This entire day will be devoted to
finding and analyzing the effects of these techniques in songs and work on
writing examples of their own.
E- Evaluate and Revise
Students will be judged on their understanding of the basic definitions and
abilities to identify them different songs. They will generally know the effects
2. that these techniques will have on the songs and why they are necessary to
writing. They will be judged based on their ability to work in groups and overall
understanding of the use of figurative language in music. They will be adding
to their WebQuest movie throughout the week and also preparing for the
presentation that they will give at the end of the week. In class discussion and
games will be depicting of their knowledge on these subjects.
