2. The majority of those who took our audience survey were aged between 14-
21. This means that we are going to get an idea of what this age group finds
interesting in a film and therefore we will be able to target our media product
at this age group and make it relatable for them.
3. More than half of those who took the survey were female and therefore this
suggests that we should be focusing on a female audience. We could make our
film suitable for females by focusing on a strong female lead. However, in
order to make the film appealing to a wider audience, there should be
stereotypically male references throughout.
4. The most popular answer for favourite film genre was Thriller. This was
surprising as more females than males took the survey and therefore I
expected the most popular answer to be rom-com/comedy. This fits with
my initial ideas as it fitted within the thriller genre. It suggests that females
enjoy exciting, fast-pace films as well as males. The least favourite option
was sci-fi so we should be certain not to add this theme into our media
product.
5. A wide variety of films were chosen from Thrillers such as Insidious to Comedies
like We are the Millers. This gives us an indication into the wide variety of films our
target age group watch and taking these into account, we can try and make our
film different from these.
6. The most favoured actor was Channing Tatum. I am not surprised by this as the
majority of those who took the survey were female and therefore a handsome
male actor would appeal to them. This also means that we should think about
having a male character as the main focus of the film as it is attractive to our
audience however somebody like Channing Tatum may not be a good idea as we
are trying to appeal to males as well.
7. The majority of people said that they enjoyed live action films rather than
animations. I think that this is due to the age of those who took the survey as
animations may be more appealing to younger children whereas live action
is more relatable for a more mature audience as they may be able to engage
with thoughts and feelings of the characters. This fits with my initial ideas as
I was never going to have animated characters.
8. More people said that they would prefer the main character to be a
countertype. I think that this is because countertypes can be more interesting
to watch as they are unexpected and can add suspense, especially to Thriller
films. Taking this into account, we should create countertypical characters for
our media product in order to create a more exciting and engaging film for our
audience.
9. These results tell us that our target audience would like a strong, attractive,
female lead who is very heroic. This is not surprising as mainly females took the
survey which means a female character would be more relatable for them to
watch. I am also not surprised that strong and heroic were popular because
these are qualities that a main character of a thriller film usually have.
10. There is a similar amount of votes for both narrative and character which
would suggest that people enjoy both and are not particularly attracted to one.
This would lead us to introduce both character and narrative in the opening
scene, however the results would sway us more to narrative as slightly more
people chose that option. I don’t think that the results are down to age or
gender, they are more specific to the individual person.
11. The most common answers were death, drugs/alcohol and a party scene. This would
be expected as those taking the survey were mainly teenagers and therefore they
can relate to these types of situations. These results do not change my initial ideas as
I planned to make a thriller film featuring a death scene and possibly other situations
involving drugs and alcohol.
12. The most popular answer was music. I think this is because the most common
genre was thriller and music is a great way to build suspense and add tension in
the opening to a thriller film. This will be taken into consideration when
creating our film as we can use it to add effect. My initial ideas have not
changed as I did not feel like live speech or silence is a good way to build
suspense in a thriller opening.
