2. One major difference between the thriller genre as a whole and the
psychological thriller sub genre is that the psychological thriller as a sub genre
tends to appeal to slightly more women where as the thriller genre as a whole
appeals to an even spread of women and men. A potential explanation for this
difference in demographic is the fact that I is said females seek a psychological
challenge out of the film meaning that they basically want to be mentally
challenged and have to really think about the narrative and almost question it
in order to find out the answers or important parts of the narrative that will
lead to them having a better understanding of the film. This is why it is said
females engage more with the sub genre given that psychological thrillers
contain less violence blood and gore and more importantly focus on the
narrative or characters lives styles and personality traits being mentally
confusing or abnormal meaning that as an audience member you are required to
think and evaluate the narrative that you are presented with.
3. The age demographic for psychological thrillers is very
similar to the age demographic for thrillers as a genre in
general given that the age demographic which thrillers are
targeted as it very general and board. However
psychological thrillers do tend to appeal to slightly
younger audiences rather than older audiences that might
be interested in the thriller genre in general. A potential
reason for this could be the fact younger people are at
university and currently studying or working hard to
achieve something and therefore are used and like to
mental demand that some psychological thrillers present
themselves to have.
4. The BBFC are an organization that parents and cinemas rely on more
than ever now due to the fact they state an age that you need to be in
order to watch the content in the film. The BBFC came into play
when films were rating their films incorrectly meaning that young
children watched films where the content was really not appropriate
or suitable for their age. For example the well known thriller pyscho
was initially rated a PG meaning anyone could see the film as long as
they has parental guidance. However this film was actually targeted
at 18 year old. Therefore now a days most psychological thriller films
are rated a 15 or 18 due to the highly graphic content which is
included within many of the films within this subgenre.
5. This is a chart of what I would call the primary
demographic from the research I have conducted. However
it is important to remember from all the research that I
have conducted that the demographic for thrillers and
more importantly psychological thrillers is very broad.
This is due to each film involving different amounts of
graphic content and each narrative being on a different
level in terms of how intellectually challenging it is.
