Katy, a 17-year-old girl with modeling experience, will be the lead singer for the band's photoshoot. Her look challenges conventions by not removing body hair or wearing makeup. She will wear a short, purple dress with thin straps to appear young while challenging ideas about female sexuality. The photoshoot will use different colored lighting - blue to seem sad, pink to seem upbeat - to change the feel of the album cover. Minimal props will be used to focus on Katy's poses and expressions captured with a camera, SD card, and tripod.

Planning unconventional photoshoot of lead singer Katy for album art
1. Plans for image taking
I have chosen Katherine Grubb (Katy) to act as the
lead singer for my band. She is a 17 year old girl with
previous experience with modelling for photography
students. Her long dark hair brings across the
femininity that I wanted the lead singer to bring
across.
The look that I am going for with this shoot is
inspired Wolf Alice’s song ‘Beautifully
unconventional’ which is about a girl who is
completely unconventional and stands out in a
crowd and yet everybody knows that they are
beautiful. Katy is the perfect model to meet this description as she has a unique look for a
lead singer in that she doesn’t conform to the typical expectations of female role models
such as removing body hair and wearing lots of makeup. This works well as many artists in
the alternative rock genre like to challenge conventions of popular artists.
I chose for Katy to wear a shorter dress to show that she is young and therefore will be
targeting teenagers and young adults; it will also have thin straps and be low cut to
challenge the idea that female sexuality should be hidden behind closed doors. I would also
like Katy’s dress to be purple as I can use lighting to change the feel of the image. If I use
blue lighting it will make the dress look colder and give across a typically ‘sad’ feel to the
album, whereas is I use pink/red lighting it would change the way audiences see the album
to something a bit more upbeat. I will experiment with both types of lighting during my
shoot, however I think I will favour the pink lighting because although there are some sad
themes in the album, overall I want it to be exciting, fairly upbeat and fun to listen to as well
as challenging conventions.
For the shoot I will also need a camera, a 32g SD card and a tripod. The props needed for
this shoot will be minimal as I would like to ensure that there is simplicity within the photos
to make Katy the focus point. All of the mood and atmosphere will be created through
lighting, camera angles and the Katy’s pose and facial expression.
There will be a drawing of a face on the cover of my album which I will create based on the photos
from the shoot. I have two main ideas that I would like to try for the album. The first of course is a
close up of Katy’s face, so that we can see clearly her facial expression which will be very serious.
The secondideais an image of Katy taken from the side sitting down with one knee bent up to her
face lookingoutawayfrom the camera.I like thisideabecause althoughdirect mode of address can
sometimes be useful, It shows that for the alternative rock genre; it isn’t about the audiences and
just making them happy, it’s about the music.
