SCRIPT TITLE:
THE EX
WHAT IS THE SCRIPT FOR?
FILM 4 PRODUCTIONS
BRIEF & WHAT YOU WILL PRODUCE
Film 4 has asked us to produce a film based on our own idea. With the requirements of keeping in
the target audience age gap which is late teens (15 certificate) to early 30s and the characters
must be in their early 20s. They have asked us to make it 6 – 10 minutes long meaning that my
script will be 6 – 10 pages long starting from the beginning of the script ending with Carrie
deciding she wants revenge. They have also asked us to make the script diverse, with POC
characters and at least one woman and one man. I have met this requirement as one of the
protagonists is a black woman along with both main characters being lesbians. I have barely met
the requirement of adding a male lead as both of my main characters are woman however, there is
one man who happens to be a key feature who is Samantha’s dad.
CONTENT
My script is about two girls, Samantha and Carrie. They used to date but due to Carrie not
putting effort into the relationship and generally being a selfish and blunt person Samantha
decided to break up with her. Due to this, Carrie became very angry at this and decided that it
was all Samantha's fault and started to victimize herself as she saw that it was only herself who
was horribly heartbroken over this so therefore in Carrie’s eyes Samantha is the antagonist of
this story, so she starts plotting revenge against Samantha as Carrie convinces herself
Samantha deserves it. We follow this story from Carries POV, and we see her devote her whole
life to obsessively finding ways to make Samantha hurt like she hurt to the point where she's
stopped doing her university work and basic self-care needs as she doesn’t have the time
anymore as all she does and think about after the breakup. At the end of this film/ script Carrie
convinces herself that a wedding Samantha was attending was her own and made up an absurd
theory where Samantha broke up with Carrie as she wanted to marry another girl, she was
friends with. Carrie freaks out and ends up stalking Samantha and the fiancé slowly convincing
herself more and more that she’s on point with her theory. Carrie ends up following the bride
home later in the script the night before the wedding when she ends up murdering the bride in
an alleyway. Carrie breaks into the wedding venue the night before after murdering the bride
and plants sabotages all over the venue. When the morning of the wedding arrives, we watch it
all from Carrie’s POV as we see her manage to sneak her way in through the crowd of guests.
She sneaks in near the fire alarm waiting for the right time to set off her traps. Samantha enters
the venue filled with guests freaking out because the bride is missing and isn’t picking up
anyone’s calls Carrie does start to worry about the fact that Samantha isn’t dressed like she’s
about to get married but still doesn’t hesitate to activate the sprinklers which Carrie filled with the
bride’s blood. After everyone in the venue starts screaming and running around all over the
place curtains fall open to reveal the brides hand in a glass rose case with the ring on her finger.
Eventually a stressed man dressed in a tailored suite walks in holding a phone which turns out to
be the groom. Carrie realises this, freaks out and tries to escape. Samantha notices her, chases
after her and starts yelling at her. They have a talk where Samantha subtly records Carries
aggressive confession. When Samantha tries to send the confession to the police Carrie lashes
out and the girls both start physically fighting each other trying to grab the phone from each
other. Beaten and exhausted Carrie finally manages to grab the phone from Samantha and as
she’s about to smash it Samantha yells but as she stands again to grab the phone Samantha
faints to the ground lying unconscious. Carrie starts laughing out of relief then stops as she
realises the person she loved the most in this world and gave all her energy to has collapsed on
the floor and appears lifeless. Carrie’s smile fades as she bursts into tears falls to her knees and
grabs Samantha’s body while whaling while still managing to say the words I’m sorry repeatedly.
She eventually calms down still crying though and whispers I love you into Samantha’s ear.
Shortly after Samantha opens her eyes and smiles at Carrie. Carrie goes into kiss her but

Samantha grabs the phone and manages to knock out Carrie, revealing that the whole time
Samantha was faking being unconscious. With the unconscious Carrie in Samantha’s arms
Samantha calls the police and eventually breaks down into tears while hugging Carrie tightly
while sirens start to fade into the background and the screen fades to black.
GENRE
The genre of my script is horror with romance and thriller conventions. I will implement the
horror genre by adding blood and gore to this story especially with the revenge plot Carrie seeks
out for. Romance is implied as its about two ex-girlfriends and how Carrie handles heartbreak.
FWEQLANGUAGE TO BE USED & WHY
I will be using elaborate code as it will suite the script more. My movie will entertain as this is a
fiction film and horror are supposed to entertain with its gore and jump scare elements rather than
educate. As this is a 15 aged, rated film I will not be using strong excessive language and only
mild gore rather than extreme gore that would be used in an 18+ horror. I will be using language
to target the demographic film 4 wants me to by using simple language that isn’t formal or
boring, so they’ll enjoy the film more and implement a few comedic moments of dialogue but not
too forced or much comedic dialogue in general as this is still a horror film. The language I will
be using in this script is technical as this script is supposed to be a serious approach as it is a
horror film.
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
I will be using linear for this script as a story in order from beginning to end will suite this story
more as it goes through carries experiences with the break up from when she first gets broken up
with to the end.

ANGLE OF ARTICLE
My target audience is 15+ horror fans who are mostly part of the LGBTQ+ community as well,
as this does have sapphic elements with the main characters. I will target this audience by making
it obvious this is a horror film through the language by making the language formal, serious and
edgy I will also be adding props and aesthetics that fall under the horror convention, such as
knives, dark colours (red and black), and a creepy atmosphere with shadows and flash. Films 4
ethos is to create change in the wider world through all their productions/ activities from their
films tv shows, to British culture and social media. These characters match films 4 ethos as the
change it could be bringing is Samantha. This is because, some of the audience may have been
through a similar situation as Samantha regarding obsessive and dangerous exes threatening their
lives and this may bring comfort to those audiences and awareness to the rest of the audience to
these types of situations.
FORMAT & LAYOUT CONVENTIONS
- Courier font
- Action – placed under scene headings and dialogue, it describes what is happening and
giving clear instructions for actors
- Placed in center
- Dialogue – dialogue is in the center under characters names to show they are speaking
- Transition – transition is placed above scene headings before the next scene
- Scene header
- When characters are first introduced their names should be in all caps
- Capitals in the right places, e.g., beginning of sentences, when characters are first
introduced, when characters are speaking.
- Scene heading when we cut to a different location or scene
TYPEFACE
Courier font and size 12.
TARGET AUDIENCE
My primary audience is late teens to early 30s. the way I will target this age group with my
characters is to put them in their early 20s so their still adults but not too old so that the younger
audiences will still enjoy the characters. The locations will suite the audiences as this will be on
film 4 so therefore it should have a British location and it does due to the fact it’s based in
Southampton. My secondary audience will be the LGBTQ+ community as this story is centered
around 2 lesbians who used to date. I will target this group with the characters as these characters
are lesbians themselves. I am aiming to attract a diverse audience and I believe I have achieved
that by having a diverse cast as one of the main characters is a black woman. I aim to target the
middle class as I believe they will enjoy this film more as stereotypically they tend to be more
open minded regarding sexualities and ethnicities.
