Day 1 lesson plan/ASSURE
Day 1 – Balance
Students will participate in two hands-on activities during class.
For the first activity, students will balance different objects on different types of surfaces,
discuss which is easier, and why.
For the second activity, students will walk the “tightrope” using tape on the floor while
holding a broom stick. They will hold the broomstick in different places, and discuss
why hand placement can make it easier or harder to keep balance.
A- Analyze the Learner
I will be teaching this unit plan to a group of 22 first graders. There are 11 boys and 11
girls. There are 21 white students and 1 African American. Most of my students come
from middle upper class families, however there are several students that come from
families of a lower socioeconomic status.
S- State Objectives
My students will demonstrate knowledge of balance after participating in a webquest
assignment, looking at a poster, participating in two hands on activities, and discussing
their results by the end of the day with 85% accuracy.
S- Selection of Media, Method, and Material
Students will be given the weekend prior to class to complete a webquest assignment,
which will be presented in class on this day. I will also present a poster to the class
before we begin the lesson.
U- Utilize Media and Materials
Before class, I will set up all materials needed for the activities, including tape on the
floor, a broom stick, and examples of different surfaces as well as different objects to
balance on those surfaces. To begin the lesson, I will present the poster that I created to
get students excited about what they will be learning. Then, I will have students share
their webquests with the class.
R- Require Learner Participation
2. After discussing the students’ answers, we will start on the activities. Each student will
get a chance to participate in both activities. We will discuss our results as a class, and
record our answers in a journal for students to keep track of what they have learned.
E- Evaluate and Revise
The following rating will be used to evaluate students’ knowledge of holiday traditions.
1. Completion/ Presentation of Webquest Activity.
2. Student Participation in Activities and Discussion.
