“Teachers open the door. You enter by yourself.”
“The most important factor in a student’s learning is the teacher.”
William Sanders
“ Teachers, like leaves, everywhere abound.
Effective teachers, like fruits, are rarely found.”
An effective teacher is one who has honed
his skills in the art of teaching. He demonstrate
proficiency in the use of language, adopts
varied teaching strategies, recognizes change,
applies innovations, revises techniques for
optimum results, and allows himself to be
guided by acknowledged principles and
theories.

Techniques of teaching are small frequent interventions by
the teacher to enhance the effectiveness of his teaching
method e.g……
PLEASE IDENTIFY ONE TECHNIQUE OF TEACHING
BOLNA NAHIN, LIKHNA HAE
17 12
MAJOR TECHNIQUES OF TEACHING:
1. GETTING STUDENT ATTENTION:
Get everyone’s attention before you start your lesson.
Don’t attempt to teach over the chatter of non-attentive students.
WHAT’S YOUR PRACTICE?
Any activity e.g.
Any action by the teacher e.g.
How is this animal getting our attention?
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 13
WHO IS THIS AND HOW IS HE GETTING OUR ATTENTION?
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 14
2. APPLY PSYCHOLOGY
Understand the student needs at different age levels
Appreciate their individual differences
Take care of their physical age and mental age
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 15
DIFFERENT STAGES OF THE LEARNER
Infancy: 0-3/4 years
Childhood: 4-9 years
Adolescence: 10/11-14/16 ys
Adulthood: 16 plus age
35 16
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 17
3. LEARN STUDENT NAMES
- Try to learn student names for making teaching more
effective.
- Use the name dropping technique.
- When you see a student talking or off task, simply drops
his/her name into
the dialogue in a natural way.
• Call on students by name;
• Encourage them to refer to each other by name, not by
“you”;
• Play some sort of name game or ice-breaker on the first day;
• Ask students to react to other students' comments04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 18
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 19
4. BE SOFT-SPOKEN:
A soft spoken teacher often has a calmer, quieter classroom than
the one with a louder / stronger voice.
Students of such teacher sit still in order to hear what he / she has to say.
It makes them good listeners.
OK! Are you all good listeners? If so,
very kindly raise your good hands.
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 20
5. SHARING THE PLAN:
Uncertainty increases the level of anxiety in the classroom.
- Share with students what you have to teach them during the year,
- Highlight the contents for first, second, third and fourth quarters.
- What is the topic for today and its major aspects e.g. …......
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 21
6. PARTICIPATORY TEACHING:
Avoid one-way communication.
Make an ample use of Question-Answer technique.
Spread questions on the entire class rather than concentrating on few selected
students;
Ask open ended questions with no clear right or wrong answer or that might
have multiple right answers.
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 22
7. NON-VERBAL CUEING:
-Use facial expressions, body posture and hand signals.
-Take care in choosing and using them in your classroom.
-Ensure the suitability of gesture in relation to content.
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 23
8. MONITORING:
Get up and have a round in the class.
Check on student progress about two minutes after they start doing the
assigned work.
See where they are stuck up.
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 24
9. BE TOLERANT AND KIND:
Do not treat like this ….
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 25
DO YOU WANT TO MANAGE YOUR CLASS IN THIS WAY?
2626
9. ENCOURAGE INNOVATIVE IDEAS:
Don’t be lakeer da faqeer
Rather appreciate innovative thinking
Let us see how an English teacher encourages his student ….
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 27
10. LOW-PROFILE INTERVENTION:
Never make a misbehaving student the focus of attention.
Anticipate problems before they occur.
Approaching a misbehaving student in an un-noticeable way without
disturbing others in the class.
Give him a smile and win his confidence.
Never put a student in embarrassment …
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 28
11. ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL:
Students enjoy an environment that changes periodically.
Rooms with pictures and colors motivate them for your subject.
Concept of science room drawing room etc….
Display charts in classroom
Who should do all that?
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 29
12. ACTIVITY IN CLASSROOM
Plan to get students into some activity.
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 30
13. PROMOTE DOs DISCIPLINE:
Use classroom rules describing the behaviors you want instead of
listing things the students must not do.
------- -------
------- -------
------- -------
Avoid DONTs for classroom.
Pls identify some DOs for classroom.
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 31
What to do in case of some very important
DONTs?
Can you think of combining the DOs and
DONTs?
For example:
“You can do this only with the permission of …”
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 32
14. HANDLING MONOPOLY:
• Do appreciate the participating students;
• Ask others to contribute;
• Ask the students specifically you wish them to participate;
• Encourage all to write something and then randomly ask them to say
something ;
WHY??
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 33
15. FEEDBACK:
• Continuously assess your teaching, studt learning and your relationship with
students,
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 34
What to look for in feedback:
• Continuously assess your teaching, studt learning and your relationship with
students,
- Watch for student relationship with yourself,
- Watch for student relationship with each other,
- Watch for student relationship with the material,
- Ensure timely and systematic feedback,
- FEEDBACK TO BE:
- IN ADVANCE,
- DELAYED OR
- NEVER?
- Ensure feedback in different ways, for example;
How did it go to-day?
HOW IS THE WORKSHOP GOING?
Make adequate use of praise. When you see good behavior,
do acknowledge it.
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 35
16. GIVE AND WIN CONFIDENC:
Mutual confidence: an essential pre-requisite for successful
classroom management. Give and win confidence. Also note that
confidence is……
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 36
17. USE OF MULTIPLE INSTRUCTIONAL AIDS:
Why multiple aids?
Different people learn in different ways.
Kuch log jaag ker sote hen, kuch sote main jagtee hain
2637
19. HUMOUROUS TOUCH:
Humour helps in winning confidence of class more than fear.
Be sharp in looking for the moment when humour would work.
Never target anybody
Never misfit humour in class
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 38
20. FLEXIBLE APPROACH:
Come to the class with an open mind ready to make adjustments in your
activities in the light of:
-new ideas from students,
-unforeseen problems emerging in classroom,
-Handle distractors tactfully
-………….
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 39
21. BE A ROLE MODEL:
“Values are caught; they can never be taught.”
Set examples for students through your own behavior.
Be kind and caring, like this…
04/15/18 03:46 PM 54 40
