BringingThemBack
DESCRIPTION
The objective is to empower teachers with a deeper understanding of student
disengagement in the ELA classroom and a set of strategies to employ in order to make their
lessons and instruction more engaging to students.
Teachers will begin by considering their most challenging or disengaged readers and writers
and thinking about class from their perspective. What does class look like for that student?
What is it that triggers disengagement? How do they show disengagement?
After generating a picture of disengagement, participants will consider strategies to boost
engagement and interventions and modifications to existing lessons in order to target the
“student on the edge,” while continuing to support all learners in the class.

How to Estimate Everything: Using context to build number sense
TARGET AUDIENCE TIMES OFFERED ACTIVITY #
Teachers of grades 6-12 Session 1 9:00am – 10:30am
Session 2 10:45am – 12:15pm
Session 3 1:15pm – 2:45pm
Session 4 3:00pm - 4:30pm
HowToEstimateEverything
DESCRIPTION
Number sense is a skill that's key to math and science across all grade levels, but it's rarely
explicitly taught and developed in students. One way we as teachers can cultivate this in
our students is through estimation. Related to this is the Fermi Question, a class of problems
that uses careful assumptions and repeated estimation to arrive at an answer. By using
specific estimation techniques and answering Fermi Questions, students can develop
practical number sense and problem solving skills. This seminar will focus on learning by
doing, with time spent developing plans for implementation in our own classes. During the
session, we will first develop and practice estimation skills as a group, then follow that with
techniques to teach these skills to our students. Afterward, we'll pose and answer Fermi
Questions in small groups to practice problem decomposition, estimation, computation using
scientific notation and reflecting on solutions. Special attention will be put toward using
writing and presentation skills in math and science classes, as well as specific structures for
group work and discussion. The topic and session will be most appropriate for grades 6-12,
but adaptations can be made for elementary grades.

DESCRIPTION
Instructional planning and delivery can pose many challenges within an inclusive co-taught
classroom when considering the range of instructional needs. Well-executed tiered lessons
serve a dual pupose in that they can assure all students are gaining access to the general
education curriculum goal or objective while assuring that all students are engaged in the
lesson. This session will focus on planning tiered lessons across a common instructional
outcome. In addition, the session will cover designing and modifying assessments in order to
fairly and accurately assess a range of students within an inclusive setting. Lastly, this session
will provide a framework for delivering tiered lessons and/or assessments within a co-
teaching model.

EngagingStudentsInMath
DESCRIPTION
Math centers provide the opportunity for students to practice and apply skills and strategies
taught within the classroom, both independently and in groups. Centers allow students to
engage in various activities, which reiterate the skills already taught, while the teacher has
the opportunity to work with individuals or small groups on specific topics that prove to be
difficult. Centers also allow teachers to enrich and differentiate activities based on the
individual needs of each student.
This session will focus on having teachers create multi level activities for centers, which are
teacher planned tasks that are designed at three different levels: Beginner, intermediate,
and advanced—enabling students with diverse learning needs to challenge themselves
accordingly.
After teachers get a better understanding of why implementing centers is beneficial,
teachers will be given time to work on creating their own centers that they can use in the
classroom.

DESCRIPTION
Teach fractions on a deep, conceptual level…sounds great. BUT HOW??
Common Core shifts in math are designed to move us away from a “mile-wide and inch-
deep” approach so we can significantly narrow and deepen the way we spend time and
energy in the classroom. In terms of fractions, this means teaching fractional reasoning rather
than just procedures for calculating with fractions. In this session, we will explore how visual
models build students’ conceptual understanding of fractions. We will examine how
understanding the concept of equivalence builds problem solving capacity. We will also
delve into the concept of decomposing fractions and how it dramatically improves
students’ fractional reasoning ability.
When students develop strong fractional reasoning, they are far more likely to experience
future success in mathematics at all grade levels. In this workshop we will see how a few
small changes in approach can have powerful results for your students!

DESCRIPTION
Blended Learning is a formal education program in which a student learns –at least in part –
through online delivery of instruction and content, with some element of student control over
time, place, path and/or pace. Online content needs to be more than a recorded lecture
or PowerPoint presentation available for download. It needs to be engaging and interactive
and complimentary with in-class learning. Consistency is crucial when blending different
types of learning.
Things that will be discussed are:
*Setting guidelines to encourage interaction, such as requiring learners to reply to at least
three discussion posts.
*Leveraging the flexibility of where students can learn, having them learn outside the four
classroom walls. Using scavenger hunts, Twitter, and back-channel chats to engage students
in a variety of mobile-learning activities to support your blended-learning model.

TITLE How to Estimate Everything: Using context to build number sense TARGET AUDIENCE TIMES OFFERED ACTIVITY # Teachers of grades 6-12 Session 1 9:00am – 10:30am Session 2 10:45am – 12:15pm Session 3 1:15pm – 2:45pm Session 4 3:00pm - 4:30pm HowToEstimateEverything DESCRIPTION Number sense is a skill that's key to math and science across all grade levels, but it's rarely explicitly taught and developed in students. One way we as teachers can cultivate this in our students is through estimation. Related to this is the Fermi Question, a class of problems that uses careful assumptions and repeated estimation to arrive at an answer. By using specific estimation techniques and answering Fermi Questions, students can develop practical number sense and problem solving skills. This seminar will focus on learning by doing, with time spent developing plans for implementation in our own classes. During the session, we will first develop and practice estimation skills as a group, then follow that with techniques to teach these skills to our students. Afterward, we'll pose and answer Fermi Questions in small groups to practice problem decomposition, estimation, computation using scientific notation and reflecting on solutions. Special attention will be put toward using writing and presentation skills in math and science classes, as well as specific structures for group work and discussion. The topic and session will be most appropriate for grades 6-12, but adaptations can be made for elementary grades.
