Ted Kennedy Rhetorical Analysis In Jfk Speech
In the library of his father's house, on July 25th, 1969, Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy would make
one of the most important speeches of his political career. Th e Senator was well put together, his
hair in place and his suit pressed, impeccable. He was far away from where the accident he was to
talk about had taken place, the "Chappaquiddick." A team of his best speech writers had been
assembled to create this famous speech, and the papers lay out before him upon the desk. A firm
tone and folded hands showed resolve as he began to read aloud. Ted Kennedy started his speech by
setting the time and place of the accident to the forefront of the audience's mind. He spoke of how
he had left the party accompanied by the late Mary Jo Kopechne, who Edward stated he had no
prior private relationship with, nor any knowledge of past conduct that would lead to disrespectful
speculation of her character. Edward gave a clear picture of the events that night, using descriptive
information to build credibility. He stated that he was overcome with a jumble of negative emotions,
making a more personable and emotional connection with the viewers. ... Show more content on

He spoke of how the last week had been agonizing for his family, and how the grief will remain for
the rest of their lives. This led some viewers to see him in a better light, slightly lessening the
damage to his reputation. He used that to preface his next statement, bringing up the question of
whether his reputation was so tarnished that he should resign his seat in the Senate. He used solemn
body language and vocal tones to show the serious nature of the situation and his possible decision,
staring at the camera with quiet

Reflection Paper On Ted Talk
For this assignment, I chose to watch a Ted Talk that focused on the importance of understanding
differences. It is entitled Love No Matter What and is the culmination of years of research done by
Andrew Solomon. I chose this Ted Talk because I thought it would be interesting to hear about
different lived experiences that people have endured. One of the huge ideas I have learned
throughout this leadership course and all our topics and conversation is that we all have different
lived experiences. It is our lived experiences that make us special and individual. Love No Matter
What focused on this essential idea and how important differences are. The topic of this Ted Talk
completely reflects what has been said in our leadership class as well as what I think a student
leader at Western Oregon University should be. Solomon's talk is centered around the relationship of
parents and children and accepting and loving children, but the ideas expressed in his talk can be
applied to any human relationship. I believe Western is a university that deeply prides itself in its
student diversity and acceptedness of said diversity. The Western that I know, and love, understands
the true necessity of diversity and wishes to be accepting of diversity in all of its forms. To me,
listening to this Ted Talk was very emotional and personal. I have been incredible blessed with
parents in my life that love and accept me the way I am. However, I have not, or at least not much,
challenged them in

Rhetorical Analysis Of Faith, Truth And Tolerance In America
During Senator Edward M. Kennedy's speech, "Faith, Truth, and Tolerance in America," he attempts
to bring Americans together by helping them understand different viewpoints and recognize when to
input religion into debate. Kennedy concentrates on this topic because during that October of 1983,
tensions were rising in the country due to conflicting opinions on the nuclear freeze. Kennedy, a
Democrat, delivers this speech at Liberty Baptist University, a largely Republican college, so he
repeatedly demonstrates his ability to relate to the audience in an effort to fill the space between
their differing political parties and religions. Additionally, he makes references to ethos to prove his
authority to speak on the subject at hand. He portrays ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His main use of diction is progressing from an informal tone to a more serious one. The expression,
"They seem to think that it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a
Kennedy to come to the campus of Liberty Baptist College," is used to joke with the audience at the
start of the speech. Through that remark and the statement, "You may not appreciate the president,
but the Democrats certainly appreciate the prayer," he turns some of the disconnect between him
and the students into comical banter. Recognizing that his audience is college–aged, Kennedy uses
humor to make them more comfortable with him as a speaker. After establishing a positive rapport
with the students, his tone becomes more sincere. Towards the end of his speech, Kennedy states,
"That ideal shines across all the generations of our history and all the ages of our faith, carrying with
it the most ancient dream." This language is much more formal in an attempt to express the gravity
of the issues. The shift from relaxed to proper word choice helps set the appropriate mood for
different sections of the

Marine Ecology, By Carl Safina
Carl Safina is an American author who focuses on marine ecology and has written numerous
successful books regarding human relationships with nature and the ways the ocean is changing. In
October 2015; he attended Mission blue II. Mission Blue is a campaign that "Ignites Public support

The three that benefited the presentation the most would be the use of personification, similes, and
alliteration. The strongest literary device was personification and that was pretty much the point of
the whole speech. That animals have human like characteristics and animals were capable of
thinking and feeling. Safina gave all the animals the 'human' traits that they deserve. In this oral
essay, he proved to the audience that animals could do everything humans do and there was no
difference between the two. He stated that "they even have the same skeleton as us" (Safina, Carl.
"What are animals thinking and feeling?" Carl Safina: What are animals thinking and feeling? | TED
Talk | TED.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 July 2017. .) to back his point up. The next literary device that
he frequently used was similes, Or, a comparison using like or as. One of the most powerful similes
that he used was "our brain is as big as a chimpanzee." (Safina, Carl. "What are animals thinking
and feeling?" Carl Safina: What are animals thinking and feeling? | TED Talk | TED.com. N.p., n.d.
Web. 05 July 2017. .) this was a very strong statement as it gave us a comparison that we could all
think about and know what he was talking about. We often think of ourselves as at the top of the
animal kingdom. We are the ones in power. But this comparison made the audience rethink that as

What has nature ever done for us?: Chapters 3,4,&5
Chapter 3:
Plants and animals are very important to human life. Plants and animals developed natural forms of
protection against biological attacks. Unfortunately, when we modify plants some can't fulfill their
normal duties. We need to keep our plant and animal life as pure and natural as possible.
Chapter 4:
In this chapter the author stresses the importance of creatures that pollinate such as insects, birds,
bats, and bees. Bees are the primary source of pollination for much of our plant life. Without bees
we wouldn't have plants and the dropping numbers of the bee population is negatively affecting our
food production.
Chapter 5:
This chapter starts off talking about the drop of numbers of vultures in India. Most of which became
extinct. This was due to a new anti–inflammatory drug that was given to sick animals.
Vultures eat dead carcasses which was a good thing for everyone. After the vultures fed on the
bodies of other animals that had been given this drug they died. Without vultures, the bodies of the
animals were buried or burned. Not to mention that the bodies of the dead animals sitting in the sun
was a public health hazard. When the population of vultures disappeared, the population of feral
dogs increased. This was a bad thing. This brought on multiple diseases with one of them being
rabies. Noted in the chapter ( 47,395–48,886 additional deaths from rabies). Ultimately,

Analysis Of Brene Brown 'The Power Of Vulnerability'
Brene Brown, a researcher in social interactions, takes an unexpected perspective in her ted talk
called "The Power of Vulnerability". She starts out her speech by telling a joke and explaining her
education and experience in social work. A quote her professor put on the board led her to research
the connection among people. However, this led to many other things such as shame, fear, and the
most prominent factor, vulnerability. She realized that for connection to occur we must be seen
completely for who we are. This led to 6 years of research, including hundreds of stories and
thousands of pieces of data. Brown wrote a book about her findings but she felt that something was
still missing. It turned out the missing component was worthiness. To delve deeper into worthiness,
she did a study on people who think they are worthy and people who don't. People who thought they
were worthy had these four things in common, courage, compassion, connection, and vulnerability.
Brown realized at this point that she needed to understand vulnerability thoroughly by facing it
herself. A therapist helped brown face vulnerability head on for a year straight, and in the end, she
potentially won her life back. Brown stated "...vulnerability is the core of shame, of fear and of
worthiness, but it is also the birthplace of joy, of creativity, of belonging, of love..." After facing her
fear, she knew that vulnerability was the core of not only fear, but also happiness. Brown goes on to
say that we

A Life Well Lived In The Film Stranger Than Fiction
A life well lived is like an intricate frosted sugar cookie; a simple, yet easily mistaken recipe. A life
well lived means that you had an adventurous, fulfilling, and worthwhile life, with family and
friends that supported you through everything. A common regret most people have as they age is
that they "lost time," doing things they did not truly want to do. As a young person, I do not have
much experience, but I do know that I would much rather be traveling and enjoying time with
family and friends over struggling in school and taking three tests a week. At the end of my life, I
want to say that I had fun and that I travelled and explored places I never knew existed, and to have
a loving husband and family. I want to learn new things and ... Show more content on

In the story about Hamlet, it is shown that he over thinks and questions everything instead of just
doing. Every person should have a piece of Hamlet in them, to provide a little bit of protection.
Before doing something, hesitation and nervousness sometimes creep in, and that's okay. Everyone
needs to keep a sharp mentality that actions can affect the rest of their life, and they must realize that
actions can either harm or help their future selves. Hamlet is a great story to learn about because it
can be interpreted in different ways – either Hamlet was a fool and wasted his life overthinking
about every single thing, or Hamlet was a tragic hero because he thought about the consequences
before doing something but lived his life living with regret. We can all take a piece of Hamlet and
keep ourselves alert to what our actions can bring. Before taking the leap, take a step back and
breathe, think it all out – it will be a smarter choice and you will thank yourself for being a little
hesitant. The story of Hamlet is to prove that you cannot sit by and watch life pass you, but to also
think about the consequences and that actions speak louder than

Social Media And Its Impact On Writing And Receiving...
Part A: Email /Text Problems
The current technological age that uses the social media has led various problems in writing and
receiving emails/texts. The biggest problem is not getting any part of a message from the text or
email; understanding of the message is the greatest problem. This can be attributed to the receiving
of incomprehensible and poorly arranged words and messages. The problem of using slang in
writing and receiving texts is a menace. The use of such slang terms like SMH (shaking my head)
among others, makes communication unofficial and only understood by a certain group of people
(Heather & Graves, 2012).
Making a right choice of a message tone for a text or email is a problem. Proper punctuation of texts

Examples of components made using this process include gears and bearings (Kaushish, 2008).
The steps involved in powder metallurgy include production of powders, powder mixing,
compaction, sintering and finally secondary operations. Powder production is the first step, and it
involves the application of different methods (such as grinding or atomization) to obtain powders
from metals or non–metals. The powder's chemical composition, size and shape are analyzed
(Kaushish, 2008). Powders are usually potential hazards, such as being flammable, and thus they
should be handled with safety precaution.
Mixing of powders usually involves the addition of alloying elements, pressing lubricant, binders,
and other substances. The uniform distribution of the particles is emphasized in order to obtain a
processed part with uniform density. Compaction involves forming the mixed powder into a
compact of desirable shape and size. Whereby, the powder is pressed in a rigid enclosure which
comprises of die and punches. Sintering involves using a protective atmosphere to heat the compact
to a temperature below the melting point of the major constituent. The secondary operations are
finally used to obtain a good finish.
Conclusively, powder metallurgy is a crucial manufacturing process that enables the production of
components which cannot be produced

Politics Is A Rare Sight, The Best Man, By Gore Vidal
"Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do."
stated by Potter Stewart. Ethics in politics are a rare sight, "The Best Man" by Gore Vidal brings this
issue up. Although the script was written in the 1960's when the election was between Nixon and
Kennedy it still relates to current elections between Trump and Clinton. Today's politicians are no
better than the ones from the past. However, Gore Vidal gives his character William Russell a set of
morals. He also give other characters, no set of morals. The script relates to ample situations
happening in the 2016 presidential election. Such as scheming against one another or personalities
that are similar. The script also has some differences with today's politics. Including, the role of
females and William Russell's kindness. First off, There are many similarities with the characters in
the play and today's politicians. In the same way that "The Best Man" depicts Cantwell and Russell,
one can easily notice the rivalry between Trump and Clinton. For instance, Cantwell stole Russell's
health records and intended on blackmailing him with it. In a similar manner Trump continues to
bring up Hillary's health such as "She took a short–circuit to the brain."..."Honestly, I don't think
she's all there." Stated by the article "Trump's Sickening Attacks on Hillary's Health," from the
Washington Post. However, Russell at one point counterattacks with a threat that frightens Cantwell,

College Pressures In College Students
Youth experience college differently due to their foundations. Through many forms of
communication, we have become conscious of the difficulties college students encounter because of
pressures that intervene amidst their equanimity and education. The Ted talk "Bring on the learning
revolution!" presented by Sir Ken Robinson, a well–received speaker of TED and the essay
"College Pressures" by William Zinsser, a journalist, portray the crisis students are undoubtedly
undergoing. While they executed their main points through the means of distinct genres, their ideas
complement each other when discussing the real–life experiences students have in college. Whether
it be economic, parental, peer, and or self–induced pressures demonstrated to affect students (in the
author's works), they don't seem overwhelming until one confronts them. Both texts contained the
emphasis that pressures, among causing temporary frustrations can also lead to adverse life–
changing effects. Being in college, I have witnessed the dismayed faces of students run into the wall
of confusion, dissatisfaction, and demotivation with the way their education is unfolding. I have run
into the same wall too, myself, and then only understood the degree of uneasiness that situates other
scholars in the state of mental devastation. The propositions presented by the writers have potential
to inform and help outreach their audience (mostly students) to pursue a career that they're
passionate about.

The Affordable Care Act Of 2010
Abstract Signed into law in 1997, Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides health
coverage to approximately eight million children. This law encompasses families whose incomes
are too high to qualify for Medicaid, but cannot afford the expense of private health insurance. CHIP
is like Medicaid, it's managed by the states, but different because it's jointly funded by the federal
government and by the states. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 retains the CHIP eligibility
standards and extended CHIP funding until October 1, 2015. The Affordable Care Act also provides
an additional $40 million in federal funding to continue efforts to encourage enrollment in Medicaid
and CHIP. Working to keep children healthy is something that all governmental opponents can agree
on. Medicaid and CHIP together provides health care coverage for low–income families. Both of
these programs are jointly financed by the states and the federal government, but are largely
administered by the states within extensive federal rules. Funding for this program is set to expire at
the end of September of 2015. Although these programs differ in many ways, including financing,
benefits and cost–sharing, it's very beneficial to many children whose parents make too much
money to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough for private health insurance. CHIP is also known as
the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and was created by the 1997 Balanced
Budget Act, enacted

Comparing Adam Savage's Obsession With Fantasy And Science...
Adam Savage was a regular geek growing up. Adam did not have many friends and had an
obsession with movies involving fantasy and science fiction. After receiving an ice cream bucket
from Baskin Robbins and a refrigerator box from a random house in his neighborhood, he made
himself a space helmet and ship. He claims that was how he became the geek that he is today. Later
on in his life him and his father went to go see the movie Excalibur, and after seeing that he made
knight armor just from materials that he had in his home. He then asked his father if he could help
him make an actual knight armor costume for him to wear during Halloween. After several months
of gathering materials and coming up with their own designs, Adam and his father were able to
make the armor of his dreams. He never was able to get a picture of the armor because when he
wore the suit to school on Halloween, he passed out due to heat exhaustion. When he woke up in the

An Example Of Personal Listening
Listening is one of the most important processes in any sphere of life, such as business, education
and relationships. Listening is more than just hearing voices and noise, listening means
concentrating, giving attention to someone talking, be open minded, attending in the discussion
(Schilling, par.3), and understanding what the person is actually interpreting, using body expression
and words (Giang, par.1). These skills are required for success and a good life. They give the
solution of conflicts and difficulties, develop correctness, guarantee comprehension and create
reliable relationships (Schilling, par.1). Considering all this, it will be presented an example of
someone's listening skills by an observation and an analysis and the ways of improvement of my
personal listening skills.

I observed the negotiation from an outside angle for about half an hour at my uncle's office. During
the discussion, I absorbed if the customer was a good listener. I tried to figure out his bad and good
habits in his listening skills regarding the information I learned in class and the material I read.
During my observation, I noticed a few things which I considered as important for a successful
business and working time, such as their suitable clothes and professional standing. In the
beginning, the customer appeared as a good listener. As Dianne Schilling said, facing the person
talking, having eye contact with him and keeping an open mind are important habits for an effective
listening (par.2, 4). Most of the time, the customer faced my uncle and had eye contact with him
showing the good habits of a listener. Indeed as Vivian Giang said, knowing and following what the
other person is saying considering the verbal and nonverbal indications has a huge impact in
effective listening (par.1, 14, 15). The customer did follow my uncle while talking, but there were a
few cases he felt lost in the discussion. The reason, he felt lost, was that

Examples Of Rapport And Empathy
Angelica Lai – Discussion #2: Empathy and Rapport Building rapport and empathy with clients is
extremely important no matter what the job is. As mentioned throughout this module, empathy and
rapport fuel the relationship between people. My previous work experience includes working at a
movie theatre and hospital security. Both jobs required rapport and empathy as these jobs required
serving the public. However, even though the jobs itself were different, both had the same
underlying task, which is working with people. Working at the movie theatre, it is directed to more
of a customer service job, where often the guests get upset over issues we as the employee do not

I found if I focus on the interpersonal aspect of the relationship, I can build and maintain positive
working relationships. However, this is not the only skills that are important. It is important to
showcase characteristics, or attributes like trust, respect, humour, and integrity. After reading the
content in Module 2, I have seen skills I use, but also new skills I am going to incorporate. One
suggestions I am going to incorporate is the acronym E.M.P.A.T.H.Y. from the Ted Talk by Helen
Riess (2013). The reason being that, this is an easy acronym to remember and apply when building
both rapport and empathy. I will need to practice this for a while, but as soon as I get it right, it will
be an easy guideline to help build that connection with others. Another skill, which was explained in
this module was the power of powerless communication from the Ted Talk by Adam Grant (2013).
In a security position it is often explained to talk with assertiveness, but sometimes this backfires as
the client becomes more aggressive. By applying the concepts of tentative talking, it may help build
that rapport and empathy as it shows a more humanistic side. I think it is important that we show our
humanistic side, as many individuals just see the uniform and not the person wearing it. By applying
these skills, I

Ted Talk Essay
When it comes to choice it always seems to be a love hate relationship: we hate making them, but
we can't live without them. Anyone can all look back to a time in our lives where they wish
someone could just pick for us, or times when we wish there were more to choose from. All
Americans have many choices, and it is such a part of our daily lives that we don't even realize it.
Barry Schwartz and Sheena Iyengar's TED talks bring up interesting ideas about choice, how people
deal with them and their affects. They both state that although choice is good, it can also have
negative effects. Schwartz explains what most people believe and experience with choice, while
Iyengar shows cultural differences in choice making. Both Schwartz and Iyengar ... Show more

The second is the more choices the more likely that the best choice can be made, and the third
assumption is that you should never say no to choice. Iyengard evaluates these three assumptions
with various studies where one group is American and the other is another culture. Her studies help
understand why and how Americans make choices in comparison to the rest of the world. Without
doubt, Iyengard's studies and analysis on choice is interesting but Schwartz's was clearer because it
easily communicated the message that was more applicable to the public. Choices are an important
part of everyone's lives and the choices we make can reflex who we are as individuals. Choice and
the ability to choose are excellent and can represent a sense of freedom. Schwartz's and Iyengard's
analysis on choice focused on the effects of choice in people and how people react and deal with it.
Schwartz's Official Dogma and explanation of how Americans act in response to choice making is
the most relatable to individuals and clearly chows the consequences of too much choice. His
analysis can assist to people realize that maybe because we have more choice doesn't necessarily
mean we will make us happier or the best decision will be made. Understanding the consequences
of too much choice can possibly make individuals improve the negative effects it can have and

Reflection Paper On TED Talk
TED Talk Summative Reflection The beginning of a presentation is what must grab the audience's

they could have been more in depth representations of my talking points as a whole. Finally, it
comes to my oral presentation skills. I would say I have average ability to communicate orally,
which I hoped to improve by splitting up my speech into different sections. I recorded each of these
separately, sometimes recording seven or eight takes, for the sake of cutting out most stumbles and

mistakes which I left in, and could have redone if I'd had better time management skills. I was

well–beings.
B. Main point II: Kindness reflects leadership quality because it teaches leader how to lead and take
initiatives.
– Orly Wahba, CEO of Life Vest Inside, once said that a small act of kindness shows that we have a
power to make a change like a leader (TED Talk, 2014). It also demonstrates that we push ourselves
out of our comfort zone and take actions to help others (TED Talk, 2014).
– She emphasizes that our kind actions, big or small, prove that we want to take charge and make
the world become a better place (TED Talk, 2014). And that, in her opinion (also mine), kindness is
such a simple, valuable quality which demonstrates a powerful role, a leader (TED Talk, 2014).
Transition: I want to you take these two points and understand them through my story and my
perception.
Need + Satisfaction + Visualization: Imagine this, you, in my body, wake up and ready to start your

The Definition Of The Art And Science Of Nursing
The Art and Science of Nursing Nursing is art and science, carried out by nurses of all ages and
backgrounds who all bring their own personal and professional experience and beliefs. The nursing
profession was built on a foundation of art and science and both must be embraced. I will be
explaining my definition of the concepts of the art and the science of nursing and the aspect that
drew me into the profession personally. Two TED talks will also be discussed about what I feel are
their common themes and how those themes relate to nursing.
The Art of Nursing The art of nursing is the compassion and care nurses put into their care daily
with the major focus being the patient. It is therapeutic communication that conveys the message
with respect, empathy, and understanding. It is being a strong advocate, compassionate care giver
and a great listener. The art of nursing also means to be aware. Knowing when your patient needs
something without them having to verbally express those needs, including both physical and
emotional needs. In my daily practice, I exhibit the use of the art of nursing by genuinely caring for
my patients, not only administering medications, and performing other scheduled tasks, but taking
the time to get to know them. I strive to learn at least one thing about each patient I care for that has
nothing to do with their illness. Taking care of a patient's emotional needs is as important as caring
for their physical needs.

Oates, Joyce Carol. Black Water. New York: Plume, 1993. Parallelling the true story of the
Chappaquiddick incident in which Senator Edward Kennedy crashed his car into the ocean causing
the drowning death of a much younger woman, this novel focuses on the day before Kelly
Kelleher's death. Violated by men before, she fears men and feels ashamed of her past with them but
experiences solely alienation and does not want to get revenge on any of them. After she meets "The
Senator," she becomes obsessed with him and forgets about her past with men. As they are driving
away from a Fourth of July party together, The Senator is very drunk and crashes his car into the
ocean. He abandons Kelly and traps her in the car while he swims to safety. Naive ... Show more

We Were the Mulvaneys. New York: Plume, 1997. When an older high school boy rapes Marianne
Mulvaney, her entire family life falls apart. As she is overcome with guilt about something she had
no control over, members of her family turn to revenge as a way to find justice. Because of religion,
Marianne believes that because she is to blame and her punishment is her own guilt, while her
brother and father turn to violence as a way to bring justice down on Lundt, the rapist. All of the
Mulvaneys alienate Marianne and she goes to college alone. Through her time in both exile and
alienation, she realizes that she is not to blame and ends up living a happier life because she
indirectly pardons Lundt, but does not forgive him. At the same time that Marianne is away, Patrick,
Marianne's brother, finds Lundt and comes inches away from murdering him as an act of vengeance.
However, he decides not to kill him and realizes that it is more righteous to pardon him. Mr.
Mulvaney, the father, never forgives Lundt and he waits until his death to forgive Marianne and
because of his violent idea of justice, he never experiences peace in his life and dies a painful death.
The novel ends with each family member who came to terms with what happened to Marianne
living happily together because they did not enact violent justice upon those who hurt and alienated

Reflection Paper On Perseverance
Research Reflection
Before I began researching I was really passionate about the ability to persevere and I knew I
wanted to talk about perseverance and explain why it was such an essential characteristic to have. I
especially wanted to find examples of many others that had to persevere to get through their own
tough times. But when I originally started researching my topic I did not exactly have anything in
mind about what I was exactly looking for. This was mainly due to that I had the ideas in my head
but did not know how to put those in a way that I could deliver it for the whole class to understand.
So as I began researching I focused on just using perseverance in school, like not giving up after not
getting a concept the first time. But after looking through a few articles I found many examples of
when perseverance was used in other ways, such as building things for society or ways in which one
can be successful. This then broadened my perspective on perseverance and showed me the benefits
of it.
The "Grit: the Power of Passion and Perseverance." Ted Talk video was extremely helpful for my
research since it gave me numerous amounts of examples of how the main thing that distinguishes
kids for who they are is perseverance. I found out that one's intelligence quality is not determined by
their test scores, but rather it is determined by how they improve on making those test scores the
best they can be. Most of the things in the Ted Talk I had heard about before or

Summary Of Robert Fischell Speech
Robert Fischell is an inventor of medical devices. His goal is to educate the audience with an
informative speech about his three inventions that he believes can have a significant positive effect
on millions of people. The first invention he describes consists of a device implanted into a patient
to detect acute myocardial infection (AMI). The second invention is a device that helps eliminate
migraine headaches. The third invention details the best way to treat epilepsy through a responsive
electrical treatment. Robert Fischell delivered the speech in acceptance of his 2005 TED award in an
official conference. His credibility cannot be doubted as he is the inventor of other well–known
medical devices such as, the rechargeable pacemaker, the insulin pump, and a pre–cursor to GPS.
The speaker's fascinating inventive capability, and determination to make the world a better place,
adds to his credibility. The TED conference consisted of approximately a thousand people from
different fields such as technology, design, business, science, entertainment, as well as the non–
profit world. The audience is not only limited to the live audience as millions of people can access
the 26:46 minute speech through the internet and mass media. The speaker used a hook effectively
to draw the audience into the speech. He starts by noting that the speech is aimed at discussing the
invention that can have an impact on ten to a hundred million people. With such a remarkable
statement, everyone would be interested to know the details of his inventions. At the same time, he
mentions his previous inventions, stents, and insulin pumps for the diabetic, which he discussed in
the prior film. This creates trust among the audience about the speaker's credibility. The speech's
opening fully establishes the intention of the presentation.
Speech Content and Structure
The presentation was entirely focused on the primary objective of the speech and uses a problem
and solution technique. Fischell's argument relates to how disease occurs, and how his inventions
would contribute towards solving the problem. For instance, Fischell states that a migraine headache
is an occurrence similar to an electrical impulse. His equipment would create a

Senator Ted Kennedy : Education Reform
On December 21, 2000 President–elect Bush met with key congressional in Austin, TX to discuss
education reform (Broder,2001.) Republicans and Moderate Democrats attended the luncheon and
Bush asked them to dedicate themselves to passing bipartisan education reform over the next several
months (Debray,2006.) Notably absent from this initial meeting was Senator Ted Kennedy(D–MA)
an early sign that Bush intended to rely on a coalition of New Democrats and Republicans to push
through bipartisan education reform. On his second day in office, Bush sent to Congress a 28–page
education blue print based on his campaign proposals and four broad principles; "increasing
accountability for student performance," "focus on what works," "reduce bureaucracy and increase
flexibility," and "empower parents"(Levin, DiSalvo and Martin, 2012.)." The legislative blueprint
borrowed liberally from several competing proposals made in the final years of the Clinton
administration (Rudalevige, 2006.) Furthermore, by opting to merely sketch out his reform ideas,
Bush retained the flexibility to negotiate with all players in Congress and by focusing on broad
goals such as accountability and flexibility could claim credit for negotiating in a bipartisan manner
(Angerholzer and McGuinn, 2014.) Ultimately, this flexibility proved crucial to the bills success.
The 107th Congress was split evenly between Republicans and Democrats in the Senate.
Republicans however, organized the body as Vice President Cheney

Review Of Edward E. Jones And Keith E
After reading Edward E. Jones and Keith E. Davis' essay: "From Acts to Dispositions: The
Attribution Process in Person Perception", and watching Dan Gilbert's Ted talks, I came across a
few ideas that I've never thought of before, and in addition to that, I acquired new insights from
them, most especially Gilbert's Ted talks. I also found relating themes between Jones and Davis'
essay and Gilbert's Ted talk: "The surprising science of happiness" (2004), "Why we make bad
decisions" (2005) and "The psychology of your future self " (2014). The themes or keynote that I
think stood out were our actions as humans, our perceptions, our decisions, and how these things
affect us.
Reflection on Dan Gilbert's Ted talks:
Before we watched Gilbert's Ted talks, my expectation was that they were going to be more focused
on scientific, or just psychological studies, or something in that range of thought. However, there
were more to the talks than I deemed it would be, because the talks had psychologic aspects to it,
but it was framed around issues, or ideas that I see to be more on the social part of things that we do,
and real question: "Why do humans or people even do this?" To simplify what I mean to say–most
of the themes in the talks, to me, seem to be challenging us socially. In other words, it makes us
think about ideas in a whole new way. For example, "The
surprising science of happiness" seems to be targeting our egos as humans. The way Gilbert does
that is by bringing up a new

Airport Security Research Paper
Many years ago airport security was not even an issue. People felt secure and safe and rarely
worried about being searched. As time went on, the prevealance of terrorism became an increasing
issue. There began more acts of terrorism by threatening and holding hostages on board commercial
planes. As these acts continued, the government as well as citizens became vulnerable and an airport
safety procedure was implemented as a way to ensure the safety of the United States. The
implemented procedures over the years included a check and scan of all carry on and checked
baggage, body scans, hire government airport employees, and a strict list of carry–on items. This

Thirty years ago, a man named Martin Annis invented a fully–body X–ray scanner (Nickisch). After
9/11 and a few terrorist's attacks, airports finally became interested in this scanner. The person
behind the push for heightened security is Michael Chertoff, the head of the Department Homeland
Security (Nickisch). Today he is the cofounder of the Chertoff group, which is a risk management
and security consulting company and is one of the biggest manufactures of body imaging screening
machines (Nickisch). Michael Chertoff represents some of the manufactures that make this
technology. So perhaps his interests in body scanners and security is not just about protecting the
American people. He seems to be abusing his relationship with the public by pretending to be a
public servant and how these scanners are going to make us safer. He stands to benefit because he is
getting paid by the manufacturing companies to go all over the television network saying these
scanners are the solution to security. Flying now is even more bothersome then ever before with the
new procedures after 9/11. These body scanners became nicknamed "Nude–o–scopes" for the
intrusive naked pictures they create. These body scanners see through clothes but not through the
body itself, leaving the possibility for some to hidemalicious items internally. I am sure there are
ways around this system to try and detonate bombs during the flights. Do they really need to go so

Essay about The Phases of Healthcare Policy Making
Some health care policy goals of society are delivery and financing of health care services. Health
policy usually explains the movements engaged by governments; local, state, and national, to
improve the society's health and welfare. It is a health care policy that stays more focused on
discussing the health care needs of the majority of the population. The United States of America
(USA) is the leading spender on health care than any other country (policy almanac,

Medicare and Medicaid went through various legislative stages. In 1954, President Dwight
Eisenhower had a personal sympathy for health care programs and submitted the idea to Congress.
However with a single vote, President
Eisenhower's administration bill was prohibited by the Senator. Later, President John F.
Kennedy also had a clear health plan known as Medicare. President Kennedy introduced the
Medicare plan on television to the public in 1962. Regrettably, the Medicare plan was rejected by
the Senate. In 1965, the Medicaid program was passed. Although Medicaid was created in
1965, it was not available in every state until 1982 (Medicaid.gov, n.d.).
The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a policy that was created and settled
because there were clearly problems for families raising uninsured children who could not afford
insurance coverage. SCHIP is a program controlled by the United States Department of
Health and Human Services that delivers funds to states for health insurance to cover families with
children who cannot afford health coverage or were not eligible for Medicare. SCHIP was first
defined and began to develop through the formulation stage. It started to classify what resolution
will propose long–lasting term benefits, by the people who have skills and knowledge to make
effective decisions and place them into action (Medicaid.gov, n.d.).

Why Does Oates Political Views Come Through Her Characters?
1. In Foxfire, Oates' political views come through her characters. Does the same occur in Black
Water with the Senator? 2. Why does Kelly speak about the past and seem to disassociate for so
long instead of trying harder to escape? 3. Why would Oates choose to retell this story that is based
on a true one from the victim's point of view?
Critical lens, genre conventions, literary movement, and/or any literary characteristics helpful for
analysis this week (explain each, briefly):
Throughout Foxfire, communist and capitalist ideology clash. Legs, a staunch supporter of
communism, thinks that men and capitalism are linked. Men are evil because of capitalism and
capitalism is evil because of men. Oates is a very politically–active writer and she herself is critical
of capitalism. Her personality is shown through both Maddy and Legs. Legs represents Oates
sometimes "extreme" political views while Maddy represents her non–violent, intellectual
personality. Foxfire also brings up important issues of female equality. She tweets and speaks a lot
about sexual violence and victim blaming, something that many character in Foxfire go through.

The Senator exhibits characteristics of the patriarchy through the way he behaves. None of his
actions have consequences that reflect back on him, they only hurt others. This is particularly
evident in the car crash in which The Senator walks away unscathed with no responsibility for the
act even though he was drinking. Kelly, the female victim, is blamed because she "grabbed the
wheel while she was drunk." Moreover, the words The Senator says to Kelly are extremely
condescending and, while he does lust after her, make her feel inferior. This novella parallels the

you go above the norm your brain function changes and it will increase its goalpost. For example,
he points out that if you get good grades you will strive to get better grades and if you get a good job
you will then want to get a better job and so on. He states that at that point the level of happiness is

Rhetorical Analysis Of How To Buy Happiness
Elsa Del Valle
Oscar Gonzalez

25 October 2017
How to Buy Happiness? A Harvard study conducted across 100 countries found that whether rich or
poor, people who give to charity are happier. Perceived happiness increases, even more, when we
see the impact of our gift has on someone.
––According to Tony Robbins, writer at Robbins Research Organization, Inc.
Michael Norton, the TED Talk speaker, discussed "How to Buy Happiness." Norton is a professor of
business administration at Harvard Business School; he has also studied psychology. Furthermore,
Norton did research on whether spending money on oneself or on others can make a person happy.
According to him, people who spend money on others are happier than those who spend money on
themselves. He wanted to convince his audience that happiness is in sharing or giving to others.
First, he gained the attention of his public by starting his speech with humor. Similarly, he has
conducted various surveys on how two groups of people, who felt differently, spend money on
others like charity or giving gifts from different countries like Uganda and Canada. Although
Norton's attempts at stablishing credibility were somewhat ineffective, his arguments were mostly
effect because of his use of logos and pathos.
Norton's used ethos in his speech but not very effectively. He had a good appearance, he was
dressed simple but at the same time he looked formal. Besides this, he gave an enthusiastic and
sincere look. His tone of voice throughout his speech was friendly and reality–based and he chose
simple vocabulary as well, his body language was clear and bold while interacting with his
audience. He looked credible because he provided evidence, but he did not really stablish himself as
an expert of happiness; he said that he was in a business school but he does not convince his
audience that he is credible in this way.
Michael was successful in convincing his point of view through the use of pathos. His audience was
enjoying his speech because of the touch of humor in his talk. He started his speech with rejecting a
common belief, this was a bit surprising as well as funny at the same time. He explained that "we

Grit Speech
In one of the most watched Ted talk videos, "The Key To Success– Grit," recorded in May 9 2013,
the speaker Angela Lee Duckworth explains how the strongest performers in their fields were
typically not the ones with the highest IQ's, but the ones with the most amount of Grit. What is that?
Angela defines Grit to be the passion and perseverance for a long–term goal and to go through with
it with no quitting. She then goes on and talks about the studies and their results relating to pure Grit

Angela developed a short questionnaire called the "Grit Test". One must answer the short questions
and the results show where you stand on the scale of Grit. She found that the Grit score of someone
predicts the level of the achievement they can have under difficult or challenging circumstances.
She tried this test at the United States Military Academy, where she had the cadets take the short test
and found that the ones who had the highest Grit were the ones who were most likely to go the
through with the stringent training program they went through called the "Beast Barracks". Not the
ones with the highest IQ's, the most talent, or even the most athletic. She tried again in the Scripp's
Spelling Bee, and saw that those who were most intelligent but had a low Grit score were most
likely to not make it as far as those who had a higher score. She declared that those who had higher
Grit were more likely to pass because they studied harder and with determination. In all of those, it
seemed that Grit was the factor that made the students stand out when it came to success, once again
proving high IQ's always being better wrong. Logos is a bit short, as many times in other articles,
Grit is simply a glossed over idea that has been thought of up before. In other places, such as a

being introverts in a world filled with extroverts that can do what for introverts seems impossible

scared, and that may not be the message she's trying to get through, but even with the introverts she
describe in the book, they are often hiding, or mimicking the people/environment surrounding them
and don't show who they are until presented with a challenge. I however disagree with this point,
many of the most successful people in our world are introverts ranging from Abraham Lincoln,

Women's Rights Are Human Rights Speech
When First Lady Hillary Clinton delivered her speech "Women's Rights Are Human Rights" at the
United Nations 4th World Conference in 1995, she focused on giving voice to the inequality of
women in countries around the world. Hoping to raise awareness about women's rights Clinton says,
"We are focusing world attention on issues that matter most in our lives –– the lives of women and
their families." She expands on the statement by helping the men identify with the women in their
lives such as their mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters. Hillary effectively persuades the audience
of delegates, government officials, and people from around the world to identify with the need to
empower, strengthen and support women in their lives. In this speech, Hillary uses ethos, logos,

What I Know Now From My Studies And Research Of Eq
By comparing what I know now from my studies and research of EQ, I acknowledge several areas
of opportunity for EQ improvement including:
Self–Awareness: I was not as self–aware as I could have been. I didn't recognize or acknowledge my
emotions and how they may have impacted my thoughts and actions. Several factors related to both
work and home contributed to my diminished self–confidence. I was also self–absorbed and showed
low self–esteem by taking on total blame for the outcome. It may be true that I might have been
more influential with my boss if I had been more self–assured. I thought at the time I presented my
case with authority, but perhaps my thoughts and body language didn't portray that confidence.
Regardless, I know that my role in these situations is to make recommendations; his role is to make
the final decision. I do believe, however, that in general I will have more influence the more
confident I am. Following the end of the 681 Traverse City class, I watched Amy Cuddy's Ted Talk

achievements money and sometimes even life to save other people life? Well, in this world where
there are about seven billion humans only one percent of them are ready to give everything they
achieved and made in their life to save other people and make their life better. Some of this heroic
people are Zell Kravinsky who donated his kidney and 45 million dollars to charities and health

Other people show heroism by inspiring people to do great things. First of all, heroes treat their life

Ted Kennedy A Political Analysis
A Democrat from Massachusetts of Kennedy family fame, Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy spoke
before the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies on September 27th, 2002. Just a
year earlier on September 11th, 2001, terrorists attacked the American homeland, arousing
politicians and the American public alike to eliminate the threat posed by terror. While Iraq had little
to do with 9/11, President George W. Bush capitalized on the spirit of 9/11 and made it a personal
mission to go after Saddam Hussein, the illiberal Iraqi dictator that Bush accused of harboring
nuclear weapons. Kennedy's speech in September of 2002 came right as Bush began looking to take
preemptive action against Iraq. Kennedy thus used this opportunity to come out against the war
Bush was looking to wage. Iraq had become the biggest talking point in American politics, and

Since the very beginning of the United States, Presidential Elections have happened every 4 years.
Throughout time certain elections have occurred during difficult times in history, such as war and
economic depressions. Elections tend to follow certain patterns regarding political issues and
candidates tend to fit into archetypes based on the issues at that time. The election of 2016
resembles the election of 1980 based on how the candidates were portrayed by the media and how
the candidates were received by the public. The Presidential Election of 2016 will go down in
history as one of the most controversial elections the United States has ever witnessed. Both

Trump to President Ronald Reagan, many similarities can be found between the two candidates.
"...They are both great public performers, both demonstrate ideological flexibility in their public
careers, and the ability to channel the social anxieties of evangelical voters..." (Zeitz 1). When
taking into consideration that both Trump and Reagan were best known for their Hollywood careers
prior to getting into politics and their use of the language of "hope and idealism", it is clear that
Trump and Reagan are alike when you consider their backgrounds and their base of supporters
(Ryan 1 ). When comparing Hillary Clinton to Richard Nixon there are also many similarities.
"...Like Nixon, Clinton was unable to appease the fears in her own party that she is fundamentally
unelectable, but also like Nixon she has demonstrated policy mastery and political discipline that
outlasts her challengers..."(Cohen 1). These traits that mirror past candidates are certainly the reason
that Clinton and Trump garnered so much attention, and why many people were passionate about a
particular candidate. This same passion is what drove the political upset that happened when the
results of the Electoral College decided that Trump had

Three Things I Learned From Cameron Russell's TED Talk
Looks aren't Everything. Believe Me, I am a Model
1. Three things I learned from Cameron Russell's TED Talk is that looks are deceiving, people still
judge based on someone's skin color or beauty, and how even if someone looks like the most
confident, pretty, rich, or happy person out there, that may not always the case. Additionally, from
the speaker's five main points, the first main point, "how do you become a model?" illustrates being
named a "model" is something very difficult to become because today's society is very judgmental.
However, from Cameron's second main point, "can I be a model when I grow up?" explains that
becoming a model is like winning the lottery, very rare and hard to get. From the presenter's third
main point, "do they retouch all the photos?" explains that what everyone sees on TV, magazines, or
social media are not real and that they are all retouched. The fourth main point that Russell goes
over, "do you get free stuff?" talks about how being or looking a specific way has its advantages that
others would not get away with. The fifth and last main point, she goes over is "what is it like to be
a model?" She explains that being a model is not all fun and games and it have its ... Show more

The presenter's "speech" was very good sand effective. He used a variety of emotion that kept his
presentation not only entertaining, but also educating. Additionally, he did an excellent job in eye
contact and moving around. He moved around the stage frequently and used a lot of gestures while
talking. Tim was also very confident, relaxed, and funny. Urban's style of delivery was transparent
and conversational. He looked like he knew what he was doing and talking about. Last but not least,
he made a lot of connections with the audience by telling a story of how he procrastinated. Which
this action caused him to accomplish assignments in a poor manner. To conclude, all in all, Tim
Urban's TED Talk was not only fun and educative but also audience

Ted Kennedy's 1969 Chappaquiddick Speech

  • 1. Ted Kennedy Rhetorical Analysis In Jfk Speech In the library of his father's house, on July 25th, 1969, Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy would make one of the most important speeches of his political career. Th e Senator was well put together, his hair in place and his suit pressed, impeccable. He was far away from where the accident he was to talk about had taken place, the "Chappaquiddick." A team of his best speech writers had been assembled to create this famous speech, and the papers lay out before him upon the desk. A firm tone and folded hands showed resolve as he began to read aloud. Ted Kennedy started his speech by setting the time and place of the accident to the forefront of the audience's mind. He spoke of how he had left the party accompanied by the late Mary Jo Kopechne, who Edward stated he had no prior private relationship with, nor any knowledge of past conduct that would lead to disrespectful speculation of her character. Edward gave a clear picture of the events that night, using descriptive information to build credibility. He stated that he was overcome with a jumble of negative emotions, making a more personable and emotional connection with the viewers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He spoke of how the last week had been agonizing for his family, and how the grief will remain for the rest of their lives. This led some viewers to see him in a better light, slightly lessening the damage to his reputation. He used that to preface his next statement, bringing up the question of whether his reputation was so tarnished that he should resign his seat in the Senate. He used solemn body language and vocal tones to show the serious nature of the situation and his possible decision, staring at the camera with quiet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Reflection Paper On Ted Talk For this assignment, I chose to watch a Ted Talk that focused on the importance of understanding differences. It is entitled Love No Matter What and is the culmination of years of research done by Andrew Solomon. I chose this Ted Talk because I thought it would be interesting to hear about different lived experiences that people have endured. One of the huge ideas I have learned throughout this leadership course and all our topics and conversation is that we all have different lived experiences. It is our lived experiences that make us special and individual. Love No Matter What focused on this essential idea and how important differences are. The topic of this Ted Talk completely reflects what has been said in our leadership class as well as what I think a student leader at Western Oregon University should be. Solomon's talk is centered around the relationship of parents and children and accepting and loving children, but the ideas expressed in his talk can be applied to any human relationship. I believe Western is a university that deeply prides itself in its student diversity and acceptedness of said diversity. The Western that I know, and love, understands the true necessity of diversity and wishes to be accepting of diversity in all of its forms. To me, listening to this Ted Talk was very emotional and personal. I have been incredible blessed with parents in my life that love and accept me the way I am. However, I have not, or at least not much, challenged them in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Rhetorical Analysis Of Faith, Truth And Tolerance In America During Senator Edward M. Kennedy's speech, "Faith, Truth, and Tolerance in America," he attempts to bring Americans together by helping them understand different viewpoints and recognize when to input religion into debate. Kennedy concentrates on this topic because during that October of 1983, tensions were rising in the country due to conflicting opinions on the nuclear freeze. Kennedy, a Democrat, delivers this speech at Liberty Baptist University, a largely Republican college, so he repeatedly demonstrates his ability to relate to the audience in an effort to fill the space between their differing political parties and religions. Additionally, he makes references to ethos to prove his authority to speak on the subject at hand. He portrays ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His main use of diction is progressing from an informal tone to a more serious one. The expression, "They seem to think that it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a Kennedy to come to the campus of Liberty Baptist College," is used to joke with the audience at the start of the speech. Through that remark and the statement, "You may not appreciate the president, but the Democrats certainly appreciate the prayer," he turns some of the disconnect between him and the students into comical banter. Recognizing that his audience is college–aged, Kennedy uses humor to make them more comfortable with him as a speaker. After establishing a positive rapport with the students, his tone becomes more sincere. Towards the end of his speech, Kennedy states, "That ideal shines across all the generations of our history and all the ages of our faith, carrying with it the most ancient dream." This language is much more formal in an attempt to express the gravity of the issues. The shift from relaxed to proper word choice helps set the appropriate mood for different sections of the ... Marine Ecology, By Carl Safina Carl Safina is an American author who focuses on marine ecology and has written numerous successful books regarding human relationships with nature and the ways the ocean is changing. He brilliantly answered this question by saying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The three that benefited the presentation the most would be the use of personification, similes, and alliteration. The strongest literary device was personification and that was pretty much the point of the whole speech. That animals have human like characteristics and animals were capable of thinking and feeling. Safina gave all the animals the 'human' traits that they deserve. In this oral essay, he proved to the audience that animals could do everything humans do and there was no difference between the two. He stated that "they even have the same skeleton as us" (Safina, Carl. "What are animals thinking and feeling?" Carl Safina: What are animals thinking and feeling? | TED Talk | TED.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 July 2017. .) to back his point up. The next literary device that he frequently used was similes, Or, a comparison using like or as. One of the most powerful similes that he used was "our brain is as big as a chimpanzee." (Safina, Carl. "What are animals thinking and feeling?" Carl Safina: What are animals thinking and feeling? | TED Talk | TED.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 July 2017. .) this was a very strong statement as it gave us a comparison that we could all think about and know what he was talking about. We often think of ourselves as at the top of the animal kingdom. We are the ones in power. But this comparison made the audience rethink that as we are no different at all then a ... Plants and animals developed natural forms of protection against biological attacks. Unfortunately, when we modify plants some can't fulfill their normal duties. We need to keep our plant and animal life as pure and natural as possible. Chapter 4: In this chapter the author stresses the importance of creatures that pollinate such as insects, birds, bats, and bees. Bees are the primary source of pollination for much of our plant life. Without bees we wouldn't have plants and the dropping numbers of the bee population is negatively affecting our food production. Chapter 5: This chapter starts off talking about the drop of numbers of vultures in India. Most of which became extinct. This was due to a new anti–inflammatory drug that was given to sick animals. Vultures eat dead carcasses which was a good thing for everyone. After the vultures fed on the bodies of other animals that had been given this drug they died. Without vultures, the bodies of the animals were buried or burned. Not to mention that the bodies of the dead animals sitting in the sun was a public health hazard. When the population of vultures disappeared, the population of feral dogs increased. This was a bad thing. This brought on multiple diseases with one of them being rabies. Noted in the chapter ( 47,395–48,886 additional deaths from rabies). Ultimately, what

  • 7. Analysis Of Brene Brown 'The Power Of Vulnerability' Brene Brown, a researcher in social interactions, takes an unexpected perspective in her ted talk called "The Power of Vulnerability". She starts out her speech by telling a joke and explaining her education and experience in social work. A quote her professor put on the board led her to research the connection among people. However, this led to many other things such as shame, fear, and the most prominent factor, vulnerability. She realized that for connection to occur we must be seen completely for who we are. This led to 6 years of research, including hundreds of stories and thousands of pieces of data. Brown wrote a book about her findings but she felt that something was still missing. It turned out the missing component was worthiness. To delve deeper into worthiness, she did a study on people who think they are worthy and people who don't. People who thought they were worthy had these four things in common, courage, compassion, connection, and vulnerability. Brown realized at this point that she needed to understand vulnerability thoroughly by facing it herself. A therapist helped brown face vulnerability head on for a year straight, and in the end, she potentially won her life back. Brown stated "...vulnerability is the core of shame, of fear and of worthiness, but it is also the birthplace of joy, of creativity, of belonging, of love..." • 8. A Life Well Lived In The Film Stranger Than Fiction A life well lived is like an intricate frosted sugar cookie; a simple, yet easily mistaken recipe. A life well lived means that you had an adventurous, fulfilling, and worthwhile life, with family and friends that supported you through everything. A common regret most people have as they age is that they "lost time," doing things they did not truly want to do. As a young person, I do not have much experience, but I do know that I would much rather be traveling and enjoying time with family and friends over struggling in school and taking three tests a week. At the end of my life, I want to say that I had fun and that I travelled and explored places I never knew existed, and to have a loving husband and family. I want to learn new things and ... Every person should have a piece of Hamlet in them, to provide a little bit of protection. Before doing something, hesitation and nervousness sometimes creep in, and that's okay. Everyone needs to keep a sharp mentality that actions can affect the rest of their life, and they must realize that actions can either harm or help their future selves. Hamlet is a great story to learn about because it can be interpreted in different ways – either Hamlet was a fool and wasted his life overthinking about every single thing, or Hamlet was a tragic hero because he thought about the consequences before doing something but lived his life living with regret. We can all take a piece of Hamlet and keep ourselves alert to what our actions can bring. Before taking the leap, take a step back and breathe, think it all out – it will be a smarter choice and you will thank yourself for being a little hesitant. Part A: Email /Text Problems The current technological age that uses the social media has led various problems in writing and receiving emails/texts. The biggest problem is not getting any part of a message from the text or email; understanding of the message is the greatest problem. This can be attributed to the receiving of incomprehensible and poorly arranged words and messages. The problem of using slang in writing and receiving texts is a menace. The use of such slang terms like SMH (shaking my head) among others, makes communication unofficial and only understood by a certain group of people (Heather & Graves, 2012). Examples of components made using this process include gears and bearings (Kaushish, 2008). The steps involved in powder metallurgy include production of powders, powder mixing, compaction, sintering and finally secondary operations. Powder production is the first step, and it involves the application of different methods (such as grinding or atomization) to obtain powders from metals or non–metals. The powder's chemical composition, size and shape are analyzed (Kaushish, 2008). Powders are usually potential hazards, such as being flammable, and thus they should be handled with safety precaution. Mixing of powders usually involves the addition of alloying elements, pressing lubricant, binders, and other substances. The uniform distribution of the particles is emphasized in order to obtain a processed part with uniform density. Compaction involves forming the mixed powder into a compact of desirable shape and size. Whereby, the powder is pressed in a rigid enclosure which comprises of die and punches. Sintering involves using a protective atmosphere to heat the compact to a temperature below the melting point of the major constituent. The secondary operations are finally used to obtain a good finish. Ethics in politics are a rare sight, "The Best Man" by Gore Vidal brings this issue up. Although the script was written in the 1960's when the election was between Nixon and Kennedy it still relates to current elections between Trump and Clinton. Today's politicians are no better than the ones from the past. However, Gore Vidal gives his character William Russell a set of morals. He also give other characters, no set of morals. The script relates to ample situations happening in the 2016 presidential election. Such as scheming against one another or personalities that are similar. The script also has some differences with today's politics. Including, the role of females and William Russell's kindness. First off, There are many similarities with the characters in the play and today's politicians. In the same way that "The Best Man" depicts Cantwell and Russell, one can easily notice the rivalry between Trump and Clinton. For instance, Cantwell stole Russell's health records and intended on blackmailing him with it. In a similar manner Trump continues to bring up Hillary's health such as "She took a short–circuit to the brain."..."Honestly, I don't think she's all there." • 11. College Pressures In College Students Youth experience college differently due to their foundations. Through many forms of communication, we have become conscious of the difficulties college students encounter because of pressures that intervene amidst their equanimity and education. The Ted talk "Bring on the learning revolution!" presented by Sir Ken Robinson, a well–received speaker of TED and the essay "College Pressures" by William Zinsser, a journalist, portray the crisis students are undoubtedly undergoing. While they executed their main points through the means of distinct genres, their ideas complement each other when discussing the real–life experiences students have in college. Whether it be economic, parental, peer, and or self–induced pressures demonstrated to affect students (in the author's works), they don't seem overwhelming until one confronts them. Both texts contained the emphasis that pressures, among causing temporary frustrations can also lead to adverse life– changing effects. Being in college, I have witnessed the dismayed faces of students run into the wall of confusion, dissatisfaction, and demotivation with the way their education is unfolding. I have run into the same wall too, myself, and then only understood the degree of uneasiness that situates other scholars in the state of mental devastation. The propositions presented by the writers have potential to inform and help outreach their audience (mostly students) to pursue a career that they're passionate about. We all most likely ... • 12. The Affordable Care Act Of 2010 Abstract Signed into law in 1997, Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides health coverage to approximately eight million children. This law encompasses families whose incomes are too high to qualify for Medicaid, but cannot afford the expense of private health insurance. CHIP is like Medicaid, it's managed by the states, but different because it's jointly funded by the federal government and by the states. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 retains the CHIP eligibility standards and extended CHIP funding until October 1, 2015. The Affordable Care Act also provides an additional $40 million in federal funding to continue efforts to encourage enrollment in Medicaid and CHIP. Working to keep children healthy is something that all governmental opponents can agree on. Medicaid and CHIP together provides health care coverage for low–income families. Both of these programs are jointly financed by the states and the federal government, but are largely administered by the states within extensive federal rules. Funding for this program is set to expire at the end of September of 2015. Although these programs differ in many ways, including financing, benefits and cost–sharing, it's very beneficial to many children whose parents make too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough for private health insurance. One suggestions I am going to incorporate is the acronym E.M.P.A.T.H.Y. from the Ted Talk by Helen Riess (2013). The reason being that, this is an easy acronym to remember and apply when building both rapport and empathy. I will need to practice this for a while, but as soon as I get it right, it will be an easy guideline to help build that connection with others. Another skill, which was explained in this module was the power of powerless communication from the Ted Talk by Adam Grant (2013). In a security position it is often explained to talk with assertiveness, but sometimes this backfires as the client becomes more aggressive. By applying the concepts of tentative talking, it may help build that rapport and empathy as it shows a more humanistic side. Anyone can all look back to a time in our lives where they wish someone could just pick for us, or times when we wish there were more to choose from. All Americans have many choices, and it is such a part of our daily lives that we don't even realize it. Barry Schwartz and Sheena Iyengar's TED talks bring up interesting ideas about choice, how people deal with them and their affects. I will be explaining my definition of the concepts of the art and the science of nursing and the aspect that drew me into the profession personally. Two TED talks will also be discussed about what I feel are their common themes and how those themes relate to nursing. The Art of Nursing The art of nursing is the compassion and care nurses put into their care daily with the major focus being the patient. It is therapeutic communication that conveys the message with respect, empathy, and understanding. It is being a strong advocate, compassionate care giver and a great listener. The art of nursing also means to be aware. Knowing when your patient needs something without them having to verbally express those needs, including both physical and emotional needs. In my daily practice, I exhibit the use of the art of nursing by genuinely caring for my patients, not only administering medications, and performing other scheduled tasks, but taking the time to get to know them. Reflection Paper On Perseverance Research Reflection Before I began researching I was really passionate about the ability to persevere and I knew I wanted to talk about perseverance and explain why it was such an essential characteristic to have. I especially wanted to find examples of many others that had to persevere to get through their own tough times. But when I originally started researching my topic I did not exactly have anything in mind about what I was exactly looking for. This was mainly due to that I had the ideas in my head but did not know how to put those in a way that I could deliver it for the whole class to understand. So as I began researching I focused on just using perseverance in school, like not giving up after not getting a concept the first time. But after looking through a few articles I found many examples of when perseverance was used in other ways, such as building things for society or ways in which one can be successful. This then broadened my perspective on perseverance and showed me the benefits of it. The "Grit: the Power of Passion and Perseverance." Ted Talk video was extremely helpful for my research since it gave me numerous amounts of examples of how the main thing that distinguishes kids for who they are is perseverance. The third invention details the best way to treat epilepsy through a responsive electrical treatment. Robert Fischell delivered the speech in acceptance of his 2005 TED award in an official conference. His credibility cannot be doubted as he is the inventor of other well–known medical devices such as, the rechargeable pacemaker, the insulin pump, and a pre–cursor to GPS. The speaker's fascinating inventive capability, and determination to make the world a better place, adds to his credibility. The TED conference consisted of approximately a thousand people from different fields such as technology, design, business, science, entertainment, as well as the non– profit world. The audience is not only limited to the live audience as millions of people can access the 26:46 minute speech through the internet and mass media. The speaker used a hook effectively to draw the audience into the speech. He starts by noting that the speech is aimed at discussing the invention that can have an impact on ten to a hundred million people. With such a remarkable statement, everyone would be interested to know the details of his inventions. At the same time, he mentions his previous inventions, stents, and insulin pumps for the diabetic, which he discussed in the prior film. This creates trust among the audience about the speaker's credibility. The speech's opening fully establishes the intention of the presentation. Speech Content and Structure The presentation was entirely focused on the primary objective of the speech and uses a problem and solution technique. Republicans and Moderate Democrats attended the luncheon and Bush asked them to dedicate themselves to passing bipartisan education reform over the next several months (Debray,2006.) Notably absent from this initial meeting was Senator Ted Kennedy(D–MA) an early sign that Bush intended to rely on a coalition of New Democrats and Republicans to push through bipartisan education reform. On his second day in office, Bush sent to Congress a 28–page education blue print based on his campaign proposals and four broad principles; "increasing accountability for student performance," "focus on what works," "reduce bureaucracy and increase flexibility," and "empower parents"(Levin, DiSalvo and Martin, 2012.)." The legislative blueprint borrowed liberally from several competing proposals made in the final years of the Clinton administration (Rudalevige, 2006.) Furthermore, by opting to merely sketch out his reform ideas, Bush retained the flexibility to negotiate with all players in Congress and by focusing on broad goals such as accountability and flexibility could claim credit for negotiating in a bipartisan manner (Angerholzer and McGuinn, 2014.) Ultimately, this flexibility proved crucial to the bills success. The 107th Congress was split evenly between Republicans and Democrats in the Senate. To simplify what I mean to say–most of the themes in the talks, to me, seem to be challenging us socially. In other words, it makes us think about ideas in a whole new way. He seems to be abusing his relationship with the public by pretending to be a public servant and how these scanners are going to make us safer. He stands to benefit because he is getting paid by the manufacturing companies to go all over the television network saying these scanners are the solution to security. Flying now is even more bothersome then ever before with the new procedures after 9/11. These body scanners became nicknamed "Nude–o–scopes" for the intrusive naked pictures they create. These body scanners see through clothes but not through the body itself, leaving the possibility for some to hidemalicious items internally. • 28. Essay about The Phases of Healthcare Policy Making Some health care policy goals of society are delivery and financing of health care services. Health policy usually explains the movements engaged by governments; local, state, and national, to improve the society's health and welfare. It is a health care policy that stays more focused on discussing the health care needs of the majority of the population. The United States of America (USA) is the leading spender on health care than any other country (policy almanac, 2010). For years, health care expenditures grew at a far more swift rate than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), by using the majority of the country's capitals. Medicare and Medicaid went through various legislative stages. In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower had a personal sympathy for health care programs and submitted the idea to Congress. However with a single vote, President Eisenhower's administration bill was prohibited by the Senator. Later, President John F. Kennedy also had a clear health plan known as Medicare. President Kennedy introduced the Medicare plan on television to the public in 1962. Regrettably, the Medicare plan was rejected by the Senate. In 1965, the Medicaid program was passed. Although Medicaid was created in 1965, it was not available in every state until 1982 (Medicaid.gov, n.d.). The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a policy that was created and settled because there were clearly problems for families raising uninsured children who could not afford insurance coverage. SCHIP is a program controlled by the United States Department of Health and Human Services that delivers funds to states for health insurance to cover families with children who cannot afford health coverage or were not eligible for Medicare. SCHIP was first defined and began to develop through the formulation stage. Why does Kelly speak about the past and seem to disassociate for so long instead of trying harder to escape? 3. Why would Oates choose to retell this story that is based on a true one from the victim's point of view? Critical lens, genre conventions, literary movement, and/or any literary characteristics helpful for analysis this week (explain each, briefly): Throughout Foxfire, communist and capitalist ideology clash. Legs, a staunch supporter of communism, thinks that men and capitalism are linked. Men are evil because of capitalism and capitalism is evil because of men. Oates is a very politically–active writer and she herself is critical of capitalism. Her personality is shown through both Maddy and Legs. Legs represents Oates sometimes "extreme" political views while Maddy represents her non–violent, intellectual personality. Foxfire also brings up important issues of female equality. She tweets and speaks a lot about sexual violence and victim blaming, something that many character in Foxfire go through. Because women are most often the ones blamed, ... Kelly, the female victim, is blamed because she "grabbed the wheel while she was drunk." Moreover, the words The Senator says to Kelly are extremely condescending and, while he does lust after her, make her feel inferior. For her, coming from a conservative town in Kansas made it difficult to reveal her true self of being a lesbian and fear of not being accepted. • 31. Rhetorical Analysis Of How To Buy Happiness Elsa Del Valle Oscar Gonzalez ENC1101 25 October 2017 How to Buy Happiness? A Harvard study conducted across 100 countries found that whether rich or poor, people who give to charity are happier. Perceived happiness increases, even more, when we see the impact of our gift has on someone. ––According to Tony Robbins, writer at Robbins Research Organization, Inc. Michael Norton, the TED Talk speaker, discussed "How to Buy Happiness." Norton is a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School; he has also studied psychology. Furthermore, Norton did research on whether spending money on oneself or on others can make a person happy. According to him, people who spend money on others are happier than those who spend money on themselves. He wanted to convince his audience that happiness is in sharing or giving to others. First, he gained the attention of his public by starting his speech with humor. Similarly, he has conducted various surveys on how two groups of people, who felt differently, spend money on others like charity or giving gifts from different countries like Uganda and Canada. Although Norton's attempts at stablishing credibility were somewhat ineffective, his arguments were mostly effect because of his use of logos and pathos. Norton's used ethos in his speech but not very effectively. He had a good appearance, he was dressed simple but at the same time he looked formal. Besides this, he gave an enthusiastic and sincere look. His tone of voice throughout his speech was friendly and reality–based and he chose simple vocabulary as well, his body language was clear and bold while interacting with his audience. He looked credible because he provided evidence, but he did not really stablish himself as an expert of happiness; he said that he was in a business school but he does not convince his audience that he is credible in this way. Michael was successful in convincing his point of view through the use of pathos. His audience was enjoying his speech because of the touch of humor in his talk. He started his speech with rejecting a common belief, this was a bit surprising as well as funny at the same time. He explained that "we see it in religions and self–help books: money can't buy ... Grit Speech In one of the most watched Ted talk videos, "The Key To Success– Grit," recorded in May 9 2013, the speaker Angela Lee Duckworth explains how the strongest performers in their fields were typically not the ones with the highest IQ's, but the ones with the most amount of Grit. What is that? Angela defines Grit to be the passion and perseverance for a long–term goal and to go through with it with no quitting. She then goes on and talks about the studies and their results relating to pure Grit being the answer. One must answer the short questions and the results show where you stand on the scale of Grit. She found that the Grit score of someone predicts the level of the achievement they can have under difficult or challenging circumstances. She tried this test at the United States Military Academy, where she had the cadets take the short test and found that the ones who had the highest Grit were the ones who were most likely to go the through with the stringent training program they went through called the "Beast Barracks". Not the ones with the highest IQ's, the most talent, or even the most athletic. She tried again in the Scripp's Spelling Bee, and saw that those who were most intelligent but had a low Grit score were most likely to not make it as far as those who had a higher score. She declared that those who had higher Grit were more likely to pass because they studied harder and with determination. In all of those, it seemed that Grit was the factor that made the students stand out when it came to success, once again proving high IQ's always being better wrong. I was also self–absorbed and showed low self–esteem by taking on total blame for the outcome. It may be true that I might have been more influential with my boss if I had been more self–assured. I thought at the time I presented my case with authority, but perhaps my thoughts and body language didn't portray that confidence. Ted Kennedy A Political Analysis A Democrat from Massachusetts of Kennedy family fame, Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy spoke before the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies on September 27th, 2002. Just a year earlier on September 11th, 2001, terrorists attacked the American homeland, arousing politicians and the American public alike to eliminate the threat posed by terror. Bush capitalized on the spirit of 9/11 and made it a personal mission to go after Saddam Hussein, the illiberal Iraqi dictator that Bush accused of harboring nuclear weapons. Kennedy's speech in September of 2002 came right as Bush began looking to take preemptive action against Iraq. Kennedy thus used this opportunity to come out against the war Bush was looking to wage.
