Essential oils are one of the industry's major compounds, particularly in the
pharmaceutical, perfume and food sectors. They were acquired using several
methods such as steam distillation. In this method, heat from the steam will
release the aromatic molecule at their specific boiling points. Thus, it is
important to regulate the steam temperature at the correct level to get the
perfect composition of the yield. Many studies have shown that essential oil
is volatile and sensitive to excess heat. In order to maintain the desired steam
temperature, this study proposed an internal model control (IMC) based PID
with fractional-order filter as a controller for this system. IMC is a modelbased control structure that can handle parameter variations and load
disturbance very well. With the inverse model imposed in the loop, IMC can
gain a perfect tracking control as well. The implementation of a fractionalorder filter cascaded to the PID controller may enhance the system
robustness to process gain with its iso-damping properties. This study was
conducted by simulation using MATLAB R2018. The step response of the
closed-loop system has been evaluated with varying filter parameters
depending on the desired phase margin of the open-loop reference model.

In this paper, an Internal model Controller (IMC) based PID with fractional filter for a first order plus time delay process is proposed. The structure of the controller has two parts, one is integer PID controller part cascaded with fractional filter. The proposed controller has two tuning factors λ, filter time constant and a, fractional order of the filter. In this work, the two factors are decided in order to obtain low Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE). The effectiveness of the proposed controller is studied by considering a non linear (hopper tank) process. The experimental set up is fabricated in the laboratory and then data driven model is developed from the experimental data. The non linear process model is linearised using piecewise linearization and two linear regions are obtained. At each operating point, linear first order plus dead time model is obtained and the controller is designed for the same. To show the practical applicability, the proposed controller is implemented for the proposed experimental laboratory prototype.

Tuning of IMC-based PID controllers for integrating systems with time delayISA Interchange
Design of Proportional Integral and Derivative (PID) controllers based on IMC principles for various types of integrating systems with time delay is proposed. PID parameters are given in terms of process model parameters and a tuning parameter. The tuning parameter is IMC filter time constant. In the present work, the IMC filter (Q) is chosen in such a manner that the order of the denominator of IMC controller is one less than the order of the numerator. The IMC filter time constant (λ) is tuned in such a way that a good compromise is made between performance and robustness for both servo and regulatory problems. To improve servo response of the controller a set point filter is designed such that the closed loop response is similar to that of first order plus time delay system. The proposed controller design method is applied to various transfer function models and to the non-linear model equations of jacketed CSTR to demonstrate its applicability and effectiveness. The performance of the proposed controller is compared with the recently reported methods in terms of IAE and ITAE. The smooth functioning of the controller is determined in terms of total variation and compared with recently reported methods. Simulation studies are carried out on various integrating systems with time delay to show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed controllers.
Hybrid controller design using gain scheduling approach for compressor systemsIJECEIAES
The automatic control system plays a crucial role in industries for controlling the process operations. The automatic control system provides a safe and proper controlling mechanism to avoid environmental and quality problems. The control system controls pressure flow, mass flow, speed control, and other process metrics and solves robustness and stability issues. In this manuscript, The Hybrid controller approach like proportional integral (PI) and proportional derivative (PD) based fuzzy logic controller (FLC) using with and without gain scheduling approach is modeled for the compressor to improve the robustness and error response control mechanism. The PI/PD-based FLC system includes step input function, the PI/PD controller, FLC with a closed-loop mechanism, and gain scheduler. The error signals and control response outputs are analyzed in detail for PI/PD-based FLC’s and compared with conventional PD/PID controllers. The PD-based FLC with the Gain scheduling approach consumes less overshoot time of 74% than the PD-based FLC without gain scheduling approach. The PD-based FLC with the gain scheduling approach produces less error response in terms of 7.9% in integral time absolute error (ITAE), 7.4% in integral absolute error (IAE), and 16% in integral square error (ISE) than PD based FLC without gain scheduling approach.

(IMC). This tuning rule has been obtained without any approximation of time delay. Moreover to show
usefulness of fractional order controller in comparison with classical integer order controllers, an
industrial PID controller tuned in a similar way, is compared with FOPID and then robust stability of both
controllers is investigated. Robust stability analysis has been done to find maximum delayed time
uncertainty interval which results in a stable closed loop control system. For a typical system, robust
stability has been done to find maximum time constant uncertainty interval of system. Two clarify the
proposed control system design procedure, three examples have been given.

pH control plays a important role in any chemical plant and process industries. For the past four decades the classical PID controller has been occupied by the industries. Due to the faster computing technology in the industry demands a tighter advanced control strategy. To fulfill the needs and requirements Model Predictive Control (MPC) is the best among all the advanced control algorithms available in the present scenario. The study and analysis has been done for First Order plus Delay Time (FOPDT) model controlled by Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) and MPC using the Matlab software. This paper explores the capability of the MPC strategy, analyze and compare the control effects with conventional control strategy in pH control. A comparison results between the PID and MPC is plotted using the software. The results clearly show that MPC provide better performance than the classical controller.
In this paper, we propose a new technique for implementing optimum controller for a conical tank. The objective of the controller is to maintain the level inside the process tank in a desired value. Hence an attempt is made in this paper as Internal Model Based PID controller design for conical tank level control. For each stable operating point, a first order process model was identified using process reaction curve method. The real time implementation is done in Simulink using MATLAB. The experimental results shows that proposed control scheme have good set point tracking and disturbance rejection capability.

Our research, which is also presented in this article, is headed toward these aims. We evaluate and propose a
system of digital measurement of a particular small turbojet engine – MPM 20. Such engine can be considered
as highly non-linear large scale system. According to obtained data and experiments we propose different model
models of the engine and design of situational control algorithms for the engine with use of certain methods of
artificial intelligence as new methods of control and modeling of large scale systems.

The Fuzzy Gain Scheduling (FGS) methodology for tuning the ProportionalIntegral-Derivative (PID) traditional controller parameters by scheduling controlled gains in different phases, is a simple and effective application both in industries and real-time complex models while assuring the high achievements over pass decades, is proposed in this article. The Fuzzy logic rules of the triangular membership functions are exploited on-line to verify the Gain Scheduling of the Proportional-Integral-Derivative controller gains in different stages because it can minimize the tracking control error and utilize the Integral of Time Absolute Error (ITAE) minima criterion of the controller design process. For that reason, the controller design could tune the system model in the whole operation time to display the efficiency in tracking error. It is then implemented in a novel Remote Controlled (RC) Hovercraft motion models to demonstrate better control performance in comparison with the PID conventional controller.

The electric motor is one of the appliances that consume considerable energy. Therefore, the control method which can reduce energy consumption with better performance is needed. The purpose of this research is to minimize the energy consumption of the DC motor with maintaining the performance using Hybrid Fuzzy-PID. The input of the Fuzzy system is the error and power of the system. Where error is correlated with matric Q and power is correlated with matric R. Therefore, adjusting the fuzzy rule on error and power is like adjust matrices Q and R in LQR method. The proposed algorithm can reduce energy consumption. However, system response is slightly decrease shown from ISE (Integral Square Error). The energy reduction average is up to 5.58% while the average of ISE increment is up to 1.89%. The more speed variation in the system, the more energy can be saved by the proposed algorithm. While in terms of settling time, the proposed algorithm has the longest time due to higher computation time in the fuzzy system. This performance can be increased by tuning fuzzy rules. This algorithm offers a solution for a complex system which difficult to be modeled.

In this study, the researchers have proposed an alternative technique for designing an asymmetric 4 coil-resonance coupling module based on the series-to-parallel topology at 27 MHz industrial scientific medical (ISM) band to avoid the tissue damage, for the constant monitoring of the in-stent restenosis coronary artery. This design consisted of 2 components, i.e., the external part that included 3 planar coils that were placed outside the body and an internal helical coil (stent) that was implanted into the coronary artery in the human tissue. This technique considered the output power and the transfer efficiency of the overall system, coil geometry like the number of coils per turn, and coil size. The results indicated that this design showed an 82% efficiency in the air if the transmission distance was maintained as 20 mm, which allowed the wireless power supply system to monitor the pressure within the coronary artery when the implanted load resistance was 400 Ω.

Expecting large electric vehicle (EV) usage in the future due to environmental issues, state subsidies, and incentives, the impact of EV charging on the power grid is required to be closely analyzed and studied for power quality, stability, and planning of infrastructure. When a large number of energy storage batteries are connected to the grid as a capacitive load the power factor of the power grid is inevitably reduced, causing power losses and voltage instability. In this work large-scale 18K EV charging model is implemented on IEEE 33 network. Optimization methods are described to search for the location of nodes that are affected most due to EV charging in terms of power losses and voltage instability of the network. Followed by optimized reactive power injection magnitude and time duration of reactive power at the identified nodes. It is shown that power losses are reduced and voltage stability is improved in the grid, which also complements the reduction in EV charging cost. The result will be useful for EV charging stations infrastructure planning, grid stabilization, and reducing EV charging costs.

The Fuzzy logic rules of the triangular membership functions are exploited on-line to verify the Gain Scheduling of the Proportional-Integral-Derivative controller gains in different stages because it can minimize the tracking control error and utilize the Integral of Time Absolute Error (ITAE) minima criterion of the controller design process. For that reason, the controller design could tune the system model in the whole operation time to display the efficiency in tracking error. It is then implemented in a novel Remote Controlled (RC) Hovercraft motion models to demonstrate better control performance in comparison with the PID conventional controller.

The electric motor is one of the appliances that consume considerable energy. Therefore, the control method which can reduce energy consumption with better performance is needed. The purpose of this research is to minimize the energy consumption of the DC motor with maintaining the performance using Hybrid Fuzzy-PID. The input of the Fuzzy system is the error and power of the system. Where error is correlated with matric Q and power is correlated with matric R. Therefore, adjusting the fuzzy rule on error and power is like adjust matrices Q and R in LQR method. The proposed algorithm can reduce energy consumption. However, system response is slightly decrease shown from ISE (Integral Square Error). The energy reduction average is up to 5.58% while the average of ISE increment is up to 1.89%. The more speed variation in the system, the more energy can be saved by the proposed algorithm. While in terms of settling time, the proposed algorithm has the longest time due to higher computation time in the fuzzy system. This performance can be increased by tuning fuzzy rules. This algorithm offers a solution for a complex system which difficult to be modeled.

In this study, the researchers have proposed an alternative technique for designing an asymmetric 4 coil-resonance coupling module based on the series-to-parallel topology at 27 MHz industrial scientific medical (ISM) band to avoid the tissue damage, for the constant monitoring of the in-stent restenosis coronary artery. This design consisted of 2 components, i.e., the external part that included 3 planar coils that were placed outside the body and an internal helical coil (stent) that was implanted into the coronary artery in the human tissue. This technique considered the output power and the transfer efficiency of the overall system, coil geometry like the number of coils per turn, and coil size. The results indicated that this design showed an 82% efficiency in the air if the transmission distance was maintained as 20 mm, which allowed the wireless power supply system to monitor the pressure within the coronary artery when the implanted load resistance was 400 Ω.

Expecting large electric vehicle (EV) usage in the future due to environmental issues, state subsidies, and incentives, the impact of EV charging on the power grid is required to be closely analyzed and studied for power quality, stability, and planning of infrastructure. When a large number of energy storage batteries are connected to the grid as a capacitive load the power factor of the power grid is inevitably reduced, causing power losses and voltage instability. In this work large-scale 18K EV charging model is implemented on IEEE 33 network. Optimization methods are described to search for the location of nodes that are affected most due to EV charging in terms of power losses and voltage instability of the network. Followed by optimized reactive power injection magnitude and time duration of reactive power at the identified nodes. It is shown that power losses are reduced and voltage stability is improved in the grid, which also complements the reduction in EV charging cost. The result will be useful for EV charging stations infrastructure planning, grid stabilization, and reducing EV charging costs.

Energy extraction takes place using several different technologies, depending on the type of energy and how it is used. The objective of this paper is to study topology influence for a smart network based on piezoelectric materials using the double synchronized switch harvesting (DSSH). In this work, has been presented network topology for circuit DSSH (DSSH Standard, Independent DSSH, DSSH in parallel, mono DSSH, and DSSH in series). Using simulation-based on a structure with embedded piezoelectric system harvesters, then compare different topology of circuit DSSH for knowledge is how to connect the circuit DSSH together and how to implement accurately this circuit strategy for maximizing the total output power. The network topology DSSH extracted power a technique allows again up to in terms of maximal power output compared with network topology standard extracted at the resonant frequency. The simulation results show that by using the same input parameters the maximum efficiency for topology DSSH in parallel produces 120% more energy than topology DSSH-series. In addition, the energy harvesting by mono-DSSH is more than DSSH-series by 650% and it has exceeded DSSHind by 240%.

In this article, an improvement to the positive output super-lift Luo converter (POSLC) has been proposed to get high gain at a low duty cycle. Also, reduce the stress on the switch and diodes, reduce the current through the inductors to reduce loss, and increase efficiency. Using a hybrid switch unit composed of four inductors and two capacitors it is replaced by the main inductor in the elementary circuit. It’s charged in parallel with the same input voltage and discharged in series. The output voltage is increased according to the number of components. The gain equation is modeled. The boundary condition between continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) has been derived. Passive components are designed to get high output voltage (8 times at D=0.5) and low ripple about (0.004). The circuit is simulated and analyzed using MATLAB/Simulink. Maximum power point tracker (MPPT) controls the converter to provide the most interest from solar energy.

In this paper an improved optimization technique of filter applies to the power system is based on a particle swarm optimization with using artificial neural network technique applied to the unified power flow quality conditioner (PSO-ANN UPQC). Design particle swarm optimization and artificial neural network together result in a very high performance of flexible AC transmission lines (FACTs) controller and it implements to the system to compensate all types of power quality disturbances. This technique is very powerful for minimization of total harmonic distortion of source voltages and currents as a limit permitted by IEEE-519. The work creates a power system model in MATLAB/Simulink program to investigate our proposed optimization technique for improving control circuit of filters. The work also has measured all power quality disturbances of the electrical arc furnace of steel factory and suggests this technique of filter to improve the power quality.

To deal with the present power-scenario, this paper proposes a model of an advanced energy management system, which tries to achieve peak clipping, peak to average ratio reduction and cost reduction based on effective utilization of distributed generations. This helps to manage conventional loads based on flexible tariff system. The main contribution of this work is the development of three-part dynamic tariff system on the basis of time of utilizing power, available renewable energy sources (RES) and consumers’ load profile. This incorporates consumers’ choice to suitably select for either consuming power from conventional energy sources and/or renewable energy sources during peak or off-peak hours. To validate the efficiency of the proposed model we have comparatively evaluated the model performance with existing optimization techniques using genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization. A new optimization technique, hybrid greedy particle swarm optimization has been proposed which is based on the two aforementioned techniques. It is found that the proposed model is superior with the improved tariff scheme when subjected to load management and consumers’ financial benefit. This work leads to maintain a healthy relationship between the utility sectors and the consumers, thereby making the existing grid more reliable, robust, flexible yet cost effective.

Short circuit is one of the most popular types of permanent fault in power distribution system. Thus, fast and accuracy diagnosis of short circuit failure is very important so that the power system works more effectively. In this paper, a newly enhanced support vector machine (SVM) classifier has been investigated to identify ten short-circuit fault types, including single line-toground faults (XG, YG, ZG), line-to-line faults (XY, XZ, YZ), double lineto-ground faults (XYG, XZG, YZG) and three-line faults (XYZ). The performance of this enhanced SVM model has been improved by using three different versions of particle swarm optimization (PSO), namely: classical PSO (C-PSO), time varying acceleration coefficients PSO (T-PSO) and constriction factor PSO (K-PSO). Further, utilizing pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS)-based time domain reflectometry (TDR) method allows to obtain a reliable dataset for SVM classifier. The experimental results performed on a two-branch distribution line show the most optimal variant of PSO for short fault diagnosis.

More than eighty-five to ninety percentage of the diabetic patients are affected with diabetic retinopathy (DR) which is an eye disorder that leads to blindness. The computational techniques can support to detect the DR by using the retinal images. However, it is hard to measure the DR with the raw retinal image. This paper proposes an effective method for identification of DR from the retinal images. In this research work, initially the Weiner filter is used for preprocessing the raw retinal image. Then the preprocessed image is segmented using fuzzy c-mean technique. Then from the segmented image, the features are extracted using grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). After extracting the fundus image, the feature selection is performed stochastic gradient descent, and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) for accurate identification during the classification process. Then the inception v3-convolutional neural network (IV3-CNN) model is used in the classification process to classify the image as DR image or non-DR image. By applying the proposed method, the classification performance of IV3-CNN model in identifying DR is studied. Using the proposed method, the DR is identified with the accuracy of about 95%, and the processed retinal image is identified as mild DR.

All over the world breast cancer is a major disease which mostly affects the women and it may also cause death if it is not diagnosed in its early stage. But nowadays, several screening methods like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound imaging, thermography and mammography are available to detect the breast cancer. In this article mammography images are used to detect the breast cancer. In mammography image the cancerous lumps/microcalcifications are seen to be tiny with low contrast therefore it is difficult for the doctors/radiologist to detect it. Hence, to help the doctors/radiologist a novel system based on deep neural network is introduced in this article that detects the cancerous lumps/microcalcifications automatically from the mammogram images. The system acquires the mammographic images from the mammographic image analysis society (MIAS) data set. After pre-processing these images by 2D median image filter, cancerous features are extracted from the images by the hybridization of convolutional neural network with rat swarm optimization algorithm. Finally, the breast cancer patients are classified by integrating random forest with arithmetic optimization algorithm. This system identifies the breast cancer patients accurately and its performance is relatively high compared to other approaches.

In this paper, we propose a new approach to solve the document-clustering using the K-Means algorithm. The latter is sensitive to the random selection of the k cluster centroids in the initialization phase. To evaluate the quality of K-Means clustering we propose to model the text document clustering problem as the max stable set problem (MSSP) and use continuous Hopfield network to solve the MSSP problem to have initial centroids. The idea is inspired by the fact that MSSP and clustering share the same principle, MSSP consists to find the largest set of nodes completely disconnected in a graph, and in clustering, all objects are divided into disjoint clusters. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed K-Means improved by MSSP (KM_MSSP) is efficient of large data sets, is much optimized in terms of time, and provides better quality of clustering than other methods.

The project aims to develop an intelligent system for simulating pisciculture in Taal Lake in the Philippines through geographical information system and deep learning algorithm. Records of 2018-2020 from the database of Bureau of fisheries and aquatic resources IV-A-protected area management board (BFAR IVA-PAMB) was collected for model development. Deep learning algorithm model was developed and integrated to the system for time series analysis and simulation. Different technologies including tensorflow.js were used to successfully developed the intelligent system. It is found on this paper that recurrent neural network (RNN) is a good deep learning algorithm for predicting pisciculture in Taal lake. Further, it is also shown in the initial visualization of the system that barangay Sampaloc in Taal has highest rate of fish production in Taal while Tilapia nilotica sp. is the major product of the latter.

Natural methods often come true, because survival depends on the live events and happenings, so using it in real life as well as any communication within technology will always be reliable. The numerical results are also showing a better value by comparing the optimization method. Finally, the paper introduces an adaptation theory with effective cloudsim coding of honey bees and grey wolf in conjunction with their natural life cycle for solving task scheduling problems. Using adapted bees improved the results by 50% compared with the original bees and secondly by honeybees and grey wolf improved 60%.

This study involves new notions of continuity of mapping between quasi-cone metrics spaces (QCMSs), cone metric spaces (CMSs), and vice versa. The relation between all notions of continuity were thoroughly studied and supported with the help of examples. In addition, these new continuities were compared with various types of continuities of mapping between two QCMSs. The continuity types are 𝒇𝒇-continuous, 𝒃𝒃-continuous, 𝒇𝒃-continuous, and 𝒃𝒇-continuous. The results demonstrated that the new notions of continuity could be generalized to the continuity of mapping between two QCMSs. It also showed a fixed point for this continuity map between a complete Hausdorff CMS and QCMS. Overall, this study supports recent research results.

This article presents the design, development and implementation of a software tool, serving as an alternative to the problems involving management, control and reporting of processes within the institutional plan for environmental management (known as plan institucional de gestión ambiental (PIGA) by its Spanish acronym) for the Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas. The software is focused on carrying out such processes to the automation setting, based on the extreme programming (XP) Agile methodology that mainly centers on the continuous development of the customer requirements to offer a more assertive tool, in line with the plan institucional de gestión ambiental in Spanish (PIGA) processes. The result is a complete satisfaction of users and a highly usable, adaptable and efficient software, inherently optimizing and automating the environmental management processes of the PIGA program. This work delivers an applet that meets the design and implementation requirements of environmental management policies. The proposed tool manages to reduce process-related times by 97%, therefore, allowing to aim efforts in other missional functions and increase the overall value offer of the organization.

The objective of this study is to analyze and discuss the metrics of the predictive model using the K-nearest neighbor (K-NN) learning algorithm, which will be applied to the data on the perception of engineering students on the quality of the virtual administrative service, such as part of the methodology was analyzed the indicators of accuracy, precision, sensitivity and specificity, from the obtaining of the confusion matrix and the receiver operational characteristic (ROC) curve. The collected data were validated through Cronbach's Alpha, finding consistency values higher than 0.9, which allows to continue with the analysis. Through the predictive model through the Matlab R2021a software, it was concluded that the average metrics for all classes are optimal, presenting a precision of 92.77%, sensitivity 86.62%, and specificity 94.7%; with a total accuracy of 85.5%. In turn, the highest level of the area under the curve (AUC) is 0.98, which is why it is considered an optimal predictive model. Having carried out this study, it is possible to contribute significantly to the decision-making of the higher institution in relation to the improvement of the quality of the virtual administrative service.

Website is a necessity for organizations to enable users worldwide to access their information and gain a competitive edge over others. The diversity of websites makes assessing website quality a difficult task. The aim of this paper is to identify the issues faced in the quality evaluation of university websites, the models and the factors used for evaluating university website quality. Systematic literature review was used to identify and synthesize related scholarly research papers. Findings show that there is a lack of study on university website quality compared to business websites; website designers did not have the appropriate knowledge on the interface design; and the website quality evaluation is complex since there is no specific evaluation model. Webqual 4.0 model was used to evaluate the quality of universities' websites. From 24 studies, initially 79 quality factors were extracted. After performing comparison, filtration and memoing, six quality factors were identified: information quality, specific content, usability, web appearance, service interaction quality, and functionality. This study makes a useful contribution in developing university website quality model by extending the Webqual 4.0 model.

This paper proposes a comparison of three machine learning algorithms for a better intelligent irrigation system based on internet of things (IoT) for differents products. This work's major contribution is to specify the most accurate algorithm among the three machine learning algorithms (k-nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN)). This is achieved by collecting irrigation data of a specific products and split it into training data and test data then compare the accuracy of the three algorithms. To evaluate the performance of our algorithm we built a system of IoT devices. The temperature and humidity sensors are installed in the field interact with the Arduino microcontroller. The Arduino is connected to Raspberry Pi3, which holds the machine learning algorithm. It turned out to be ANN algorithm is the most accurate for such system of irrigation. The ANN algorithm is the best choice for an intelligent system to minimize water loss for some products.

We present the design and implementation of a laundry database management system (LBMS) used in a laundry establishment. Laundry firms are usually faced with difficulties in keeping detailed records of customers clothing; this little problem as seen to most laundry firms is highly discouraging as customers are filled with disappointments, arising from issues such as customer clothes mix-ups and untimely retrieval of clothes. The aim of this application is to determine the number of clothes collected, in relation to their owners, as this also helps the users fix a date for the collection of their clothes. The Division of Vaccine and Immunization is facing increasing difficulty monitoring vaccines and other commodities distribution once they have been distributed from the national stores. With the introduction of new vaccines, more challenges have been anticipated with this additions posing serious threat to the already over strained vaccine supply chain system in Kenya.
Q.1 A single plate clutch with both sides of the plate effective is required to transmit 25 kW at 1600 r.p.m. The outer diameter of the plate is limited to 300 mm and the intensity of pressure between the plates not to exceed 0.07N / m * m ^ 2 Assuming uniform wear and coefficient of friction 0.3, find the inner diameter of the plates and the axial force necessary to engage the clutch.
Q.2 A multiple disc clutch has radial width of the friction material as 1/5th of the maximum radius. The coefficient of friction is 0.25. Find the total number of discs required to transmit 60 kW at 3000 r.p.m. The maximum diameter of the clutch is 250 mm and the axial force is limited to 600 N. Also find the mean unit pressure on each contact surface.
Q.3 A cone clutch is to be designed to transmit 7.5 kW at 900 r.p.m. The cone has a face angle of 12°. The width of the face is half of the mean radius and the normal pressure between the contact faces is not to exceed 0.09 N/mm². Assuming uniform wear and the coefficient of friction between the contact faces as 0.2, find the main dimensions of the clutch and the axial force required to engage the clutch.
Q.4 A cone clutch is mounted on a shaft which transmits power at 225 r.p.m. The small diameter of the cone is 230 mm, the cone face is 50 mm and the cone face makes an angle of 15 deg with the horizontal. Determine the axial force necessary to engage the clutch to transmit 4.5 kW if the coefficient of friction of the contact surfaces is 0.25. What is the maximum pressure on the contact surfaces assuming uniform wear?
Q.5 A soft surface cone clutch transmits a torque of 200 N-m at 1250 r.p.m. The larger diameter of the clutch is 350 mm. The cone pitch angle is 7.5 deg and the face width is 65 mm. If the coefficient of friction is 0.2. find:
1. the axial force required to transmit the torque:
2. the axial force required to engage the clutch;
3. the average normal pressure on the contact surfaces when the maximum torque is being transmitted; and
4. the maximum normal pressure assuming uniform wear.
Q.6 A single block brake, as shown in Fig. 1. has the drum diameter 250 mm. The angle of contact is 90° and the coefficient of friction between the drum and the lining is 0.35. If the torque transmitted by the brake is 70 N-m, find the force P required to operate the brake. Q.7 The layout and dimensions of a double shoe brake is shown in Fig. 2. The diameter of the
brake drum is 300 mm and the contact angle for each shoe is 90°. R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

Essential oils are one of the industry's major compounds, particularly in the
pharmaceutical, perfume and food sectors. They were acquired using several
methods such as steam distillation. In this method, heat from the steam will
release the aromatic molecule at their specific boiling points. Thus, it is
important to regulate the steam temperature at the correct level to get the
perfect composition of the yield. Many studies have shown that essential oil
is volatile and sensitive to excess heat. In order to maintain the desired steam
temperature, this study proposed an internal model control (IMC) based PID
with fractional-order filter as a controller for this system. IMC is a model-
based control structure that can handle parameter variations and load
disturbance very well. With the inverse model imposed in the loop, IMC can
gain a perfect tracking control as well. The implementation of a fractional-
order filter cascaded to the PID controller may enhance the system
robustness to process gain with its iso-damping properties. This study was
conducted by simulation using MATLAB R2018. The step response of the
closed-loop system has been evaluated with varying filter parameters
depending on the desired phase margin of the open-loop reference model.

1. INTRODUCTION
Essential oils are botanical substances that can be obtained through the extraction process of
aromatic plants. Essential oils are primarily used in the flavour, fragrance, cosmetics and pharmaceutical
industries [1-4]. The essential oils contain a complex mixture of volatile chemical compounds and they are
sensitive towards temperature which may affect the quality of the oils [5-7]. Steam distillation is one of the
effective and affordable methods used to maintain a strict temperature range. The essential oils will not be
distilled if the temperature is too low and it will damage if the temperature is too high.
Steam distillation method can purify or isolate sensitive materials such as natural aromatic
compounds, where steam is injected into the plant to release aromatic molecule. Moreover, steam distillation
is the most popular method to be used in collection essential oil [8]. Almost 93% of essential oils extracted
using this method [9, 10]. Furthermore, the advantage of steam distillation is that it can be precisely
controlled and adjusted the temperature to ensure that the system remains consistent within the optimal
temperature range [11]. It is also considered as a low-cost system, but able to improve productivity leading to
industry preferences [12, 13].

For many decades, the Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller has remained the largest
used process control technique [12-16]. However, when the PID controller was tuned using a basic method,
the control loop performance will be drifted if the parameter of control loop changed and load disturbance
occurs, resulting in undesired results [17, 18]. Therefore in 1980s, Morari et al. in [18-20] had introduced the
PID tuning using Internal Model Control (IMC). IMC control structure can be decomposed into two transfer
function; the PID controller and a simple filter equation. The first application of IMC was applied to the
continuous distillation plant [18]. As the pioneer in the IMC, they had demonstrated the benefits of IMC
control design in many processes. Li et al. in [21] had applied the Internal Model Control based PID (IMC-
PID) tuning method for superheated steam temperature control. In their research, the IMC PID was designed
using the Skogestad-IMC (SIMC) tuning method [22] to achieve perfect setpoint tracking. Rao et al. [23]
proposed an IMC-PID controller for integrating system with time delay. They used the estimation of first-
order Pade’s for the time-delay term. The comparative studies had been made between servo and regulatory
problem. The result shows that the proposed method gives better integral performance criteria in terms of
ISE, IAE and ITAE.
In recent advancement, many researchers had included a fractional-order filter instead of an ordinary
filter. This is because the filter give the advantage of iso-damping properties of a fractional-order function
that is robust to gain variation. In [24, 25], Bettayeb and Mansouri studied the IMC-PID cascased with
fractional-order filter controller design for integer order system. They had generalized the tuning rule for a
different type of processes using CRONE principle. The processes that had studied were the liquid level
system and angular velocity control a servo system. Both procecess show a good result in both setpoint
tracking and disturbance rejection when applied the proposed design as the controller.
The main objective of this project is to design a new controller for steam distillation essential oil
extraction process using IMC based PID controller with fractional-order filter to regulate the steam
temperature and at the same time guarantee the robustness of the process towards disturbance and process
parameters change. The controller design criteria was based on Bettayeb and Mansouri purposed in [25]. One
of the controller design criteria is using the CRONE principle to achieve the design requirement specified by
the desired phase margin and crossover frequency. The simulation was done by Simulink in MATLAB
R2018 software to evaluate the performance of the closed-loop system for several sets of requirements.
2. RESEARCH METHOD
Figure 1 shows the flow chart of designing the controller. First of all, the literature review must be
done before designing the controller because information of this research needs to be read and understand the
context very well. Next are the ORA and IMC synthesis. ORA stands for Oustaloup Recursive
Approximation that widely used as an open-loop reference to find a rational integer-order approximation for
fractional-order integrators and differentiator [26]. ORA will affect the fractional-order filter inside the
designed controller while IMC synthesis will affect the PID parameter of the system. Next from the
derivation by using IMC controller design and fractional filter, the parameters of the controller are calculated.
Then, design the block diagram of the system and run the simulation using MATLAB/Simulink. Every
design had its own value for PID parameters and observed the step responses. Moreover, from this
simulation, the reaction curve was observed by the characteristic of the curve. If the reaction curve is not
meet the criteria, the parameter of the controller can be varied. Then if the reaction curve meets the criteria,
the objective of designing the controller is achieved.
2.1. Internal model control (IMC)
The basic arrangement of IMC is shown in Figure 2 where Gm(s) is the process and Gm’(s) is the
process model. If both process and its model is similar, it will result in the ability to estimate disturbance. In
addition, the predicted disturbance is the actual disturbance when both processes are equal. The IMC
controller can eliminate any disturbance from the setpoint, thus fulfilling the perfect control.
In order to derive the IMC algorithm, Figure 2 can be transformed equally into Figure 3. Then, by
simplifying the feedback loop within the dotted box, yields a transfer function of a controller in terms of
CIMC(s) and Gm’(s). Finally, the simplified IMC structure is shown in Figure 4.

This study applies Bode ideal principle as proposed by Bettayeb and Mansouri in tuning the IMC
controller. It is based on an ideal shape of an open loop transfer function in the form,

Hence, the slope of magnitude curve which on log-log scale is parameter of α. It is assumes that
integer value as well as non-integer value. The value of α in transfer function of L(s) is fractional-order
differentiator when α < 0 and fractional integrator when α > 0. The bode diagram is simple where the
amplitude curve is straight line of constant slope -20α dB/dec where the phase margin can be derived as (4).

Considering the unity feedback system shown in Figure 3, if the forward transfer function is equal to
L(s), then L(s) will determine the property of the closed-loop system. Phase margin will remain equal even
though there are changes in system gain. The closed loop system of Figure 4 is same as given by at (1).
While the desired closed loop transfer function is given by,

As shown in (5) is used as a reference model for tuning the controller C(s). Based on this reference
model, the overshoot which depends on α and the settling time which depends on τc can be determined
respectively.
2.2. IMC PID with fractional-order filter
In this section, the derivation of IMC PID with fractional-order filter will be discussed. The idea of
this design is to have an integer-order PID that is cascaded with fractional-order filter to meet closed loop
specifications. The general equation of such controller is given by,

constant and Td is derivative time constant. If we consider a first-order plus dead-time system,

Table 1 shows the calculated value of α and time constant τc calculated using (19) for a desired phase
margin and crossover frequency while the Bode plot is shown in Figure 5. Crossover frequency ωc is constant
value of 0.008 which one of the controller design criteria in [25]. As stated in (13), value of α is between
0 to 1. When α more than 1, the time constant τc gave the slowest response among other value α.

Figure 5 shows the Bode plot of open loop reference by using ORA that using varies values of α.
When the value of α varied, it give us desired value phase margin and crossover frequency that will use to
calculate the fractional order filter at (19).
3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
In this study, block diagram of the proposed method has been designed in MATLAB/Simulink
software. The step input signal has been set from 0 to 15 to represent the temperature from 70ºC to 85 ºC.
The PID controller block is set according to the parameter of Kc=5.2, Ti=1/292.5 and Td=62.64 using formula
in (18). Besides that, the controller consist of fractional filter have been cascaded with IMC-PID block
diagram. The cascaded block diagram used to impose the phase margin and crossover frequency by using the
value of parameter α and τc. The step response of IMC-PID with fractional-order filter controller was
compared based on the parameter where the block diagrams for all tuning are the same. Table 2 shows the
result where there is a fractional characteristic of the open loop system. In this case, adjust the magnitude
(gain) to increase the crossover frequency by 1 to achieve the fractional specification.

Based on Figure 6 shows the bode plot of the open-loop system represents for other value of alpha.
It shows the difference of the result obtained before and after increase the gain to achieve the crossover
frequency ωc =1rad/s. In the Bode plot open-loop system, the phase curve is flat around the gain of crossover
frequency, ωc and the system has a phase margin of approximate to the desired value. For example, the
closed-loop system of α=0.1111 and time constant, τc =213.74s have imposed the approximate of phase
margin which is PM=165° close to phase margin of open-loop reference PM=170°. This observation leads to
a conclusion that the controller tune by the proposed method is robust against gain variation and having iso-
damping property around the gain crossover frequency.

Table 3 shows the transient response of the IMC-PID fractional-order filter tuning method with
varying value of α. Based on the result obtain, the highest percentage of overshoot is 12.1% at α=1.333 where
the settling time is Ts=845s that is slower than others. The performance of this system was improved at
α=0.3333 when the overshoot was lower and diminished. The settling time response also improve at
Tr =461s. However, the rise time is a bit slower compared to other alpha.

Figure 7 shows the closed-loop system step response. The performance of the closed-loop system
obtains from simulation have produced better transient response when α <1. Besides that, the percentage of
overshoot also has decreased and disappears. However, the rise time, Tr has a slower response compared to
the fast-responding when α >1. In terms of settling time Ts, when α>1 has the slowest response due to the
overshoot compared to the value of α <1 where it has a lower value without overshooting. Based on
observation, the lower value of alpha, α with the highest value of phase margin has reduced the overshoot
compared to the lower phase margin where it increases the overshoot. Besides, this relation has proved that
the percentage of overshoot depends on alpha, α where the settling time depends on the time constant, τc.

4. CONCLUSION
This paper presented the IMC-PID controller with fractional-order filter for steam distillation
essential oil extraction process. This study aims to design a controller that can control the steam temperature
during the extraction. It consists of a conventional PID controller based on an IMC paradigm and cascaded
with a fractional-order filter. This proposed method is more attractive than conventional PID as it has the iso-
damping robustness and more degree of freedom to meet other specification. The parameter of the closed-
loop step response has been tuned by the simulation to obtain the desired overshoot (depends on α) and
desired settling time (depends on the time constant, τc). The proposed method has met all the fractional
specification and also have better performance of a closed-loop system.

BIOGRAPHIES OF AUTHORS
Siti Nur Hasinah Johari was born in Sabah, Malaysia on 27th
December 1995. She received
the Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.Hons.) in Electronics Engineering from Universiti
Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in 2019 and currently pursuing Masters Engineering Science
(M.Eng.Sc) in Electrical Engineering in the same university. Her major research interests are
in the field of essential oil extraction process automation and control focusing on the internal
model control.
Mohd Hezri Fazalul Rahiman was born in Perak, Malaysia on 22nd February 1978. He
received the B.Eng.degree in Electrical (Control and Instrumentation) and the M.Eng. degree
in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Malaysia, in
2000 and 2002, respectively. He received his PhD degree in System Identification from
Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia in 2009. He is currently a senior lecturer at
Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. His major interests include essential oil
extraction process automation, process control, and system identification.
Najidah Hambali received Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.Hons.) in Electronics Engineering
from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in 2004. In 2005, she joined Universiti Malaysia
Pahang (UMP) as a tutor. After received her Masters Engineering Science (M.Eng.Sc.) in
Systems and Control from The University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia in
2006, she continued working in UMP as a lecturer until 2010. In January 2011, she joined
UiTM and completed her PhD in Advanced Process Control at the Faculty of Electrical
Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). Currently, she is a senior lecturer in the
Centre of System Engineering Studies (CSES), Faculty of Electrical Engineering, UiTM, Shah
Alam.
Ramli Adnan was born in Perak, Malaysia on 8 September 1961. He received his B. Sc. In
Electrical Engineering from SDSU, South Dakota, USA in 1985 and M.Sc. in Electrical
Engineering from Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA in 1993 and PhD in Electrical,
Electronic and System Engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2007.
Currently, he is a Professor at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia. His research interests
include Tracking Control, Adaptive Control, System Identification, Flood Prediction using NN
and Fractional-Order Controllers. He has been a supervisor to many PhD and MSc students.
Mazidah Tajjudin was born on 1978. She received the B.Eng. degree in Electrical (Control
and Instrumentation) and the M.Eng. degree in Mechatronic and Automatic Control, both from
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Johor, Malaysia, in 2000 and 2005,
respectively. Afterward, she pursuit her PhD in fractional-order process control at University
Teknologi MARA, Malaysia. She is currently a senior lecturer at the same university since
2006. Her major research interests are in the field of essential oil extraction process automation
and control focusing on the fractional-order methods.
