ADVERBS
Their position in a
sentence
TYPES OF ADVERBS
1) ADVERBS OF MANNER: the way in which
someone do something. (badly)
2) ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY: how often
something happens. (always)
3) ADVERBS OF TIME: when something happens.
(soon)
4) ADVERBS OF DEGREE: they are used to modify
an adjective or to indicate how much something is
done. (very)
5) COMMENT ADVERBS (or sentence adverbs):
they are used when the speaker gives his opinion or
makes a comment about a situation. (unfortunately)
Other adverbs
• ADVERBS OF PLACE: where something
happens. (everywhere)
• CONNECTING ADVERBS: they make
immediately clear the logical relation to the
previous sentence. (as a result)
• FOCUS ADVERBS: they indicate that what is
being communicated is limited to the part that
is focused; a focus adverb will tend either to
limit the sense of the sentence (just) or to act as
an additive (also).
POSITION OF ADVERBS
1) ADVERBS OF MANNER: They normally appear after
the verb or at the end of the sentence:
I don’t understand when you speak quickly
2) ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY: They appear before the
main verb or after the verb to be. Sometimes, usually,
occasionally or normally may also appear at the beginning
of the sentence:
I never have breakfast
POSITION OF ADVERBS
3) ADVERBS OF TIME: They normally appear at the end
of the sentence; however they may sometimes appear in
front position if we want to remark this information.
• Adverbs such as daily, hourly, monthly or weekly only
appear in end position.
• Adverbs of time such as already, finally, now, recently,
soon and still can even appear in mid position:
They will be here soon
Yesterday I went to the cinema
I finally met Roy at the conference
POSITION OF ADVERBS
4) ADVERBS OF DEGREE:
• Some of these adverbs appear before the adjective or the
adverb:
He is incredibly handsome
• Others are used with verbs and they appear after them or at
the end of the sentence:
He works a lot
• Others are used with both adjectives and verbs:
I’m a bit tired (with adjective)
She sleeps a bit in the afternoon (with verb)
POSITION OF ADVERBS
5) COMMENT ADVERBS: They normally appear at the
beginning of the sentence:
Unfortunately, we arrived late
6) Other adverbs: Most other adverbs go before the main
verb.
