This document provides information about two informal markets - Jummerat Bazaar flea market in Hyderabad and General Bazaar market in Secunderabad.
For Jummerat Bazaar, it describes the history, location, goods sold, economic activity, issues like lack of parking and traffic. Proposals are made to formalize the market by constructing temporary structures, providing parking, and beautifying the adjacent Musi riverfront.
For General Bazaar, it gives the introduction, structure and operation details. The major findings are around people from all classes visiting for variety and prices. Issues faced are narrow streets and inadequate parking. Proposals include restricting goods vehicles during peak hours and limiting customer vehicles in narrow roads.
2. MARKET?
• The word ‘Market’ comes from the Italian word ‘Mercato’.
• Mercato in Addis Ababa is a staggeringly big open market.
• It is the biggest market place in that part of the world with an astonishing
variety of products on display and sale.
• A market is a place either physical or virtual where a group of buyers and
sellers exist.
• The buyers determine the demand and sellers determine the supply,
together they exchange their goods or services.

3. FLEA MARKET :
• A flea market is a type of bazaar where inexpensive or secondhand goods
are sold or bartered. It may be indoors, such as in a warehouse; or it may be
outdoors, such as on the roads.
• The flea market vendors may range from a family that is renting a spot for
the first time to sell a few unwanted household items .
• Many flea markets have food vendors who sell snacks and drinks to the
patrons.
• The origins of the term are disputed, but some have observed that buyers
and sellers may be as active as fleas, or that the original people and goods
were infested.

4. SITE INTRODUCTION:
• Jummerat Bazaar(flea market) is an old wayside market located in Old City,
adjacent to Muslim Jung Bridge area near Begum Bazaar in the south zone of
the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.
• The bazaar is a weekly flea market that opens every Thursday at 4 am and
closes at 12 pm. In fact people start gathering by Wednesday night with their
wares. Total stretch of the market is about 1 km.
• Most of the items sold here are said to be either stolen or bought from rag
pickers. One can get anything from a tiny pack of safety pins to huge and bulky
items such as decorated horse carts and other heavy usable items at a
throwaway price. Things are very cheap and careful haggling can yield you a
product for a considerable price.

6. HISTORY
• Historically, it started more than two centuries ago, during the Nizam’s rule
in Hyderabad, when goods used by Nizam used to be sold at Muslim Jung
Bridge near Begum Bazaar and Dhoolpet.
• Slowly, it transformed into a place where a wide range of used articles are
sold on a weekly basis, which is visited equally by the poor, who come for
a good bargain, and by the rich, who come to buy rare antiques.
• Jummeraat, which literally means the eve of Friday, is the name given to
this flea market that is set up every Thursday. This one begins just before
sunrise and some stuff here is said to be stolen ware. That's why the market
is informally known as Chor Bazaar.
