Commercial street is a famous street in Bangalore, state capital of
Karnataka. It lies in the heart of the city in the central business district area,
close to M G road, Brigade road and Russell market in Shivaji nagar.
It is One of the oldest and busiest shopping areas of the city. The street is
famous for its trade in clothes, footwear, jewelery, electronics and food
joints.
HISTORY OF COMMERCIAL STREET
Commercial street has a glorifying history of 400 years ,a legacy of the
British was a shopping mecca that sells international brands alongside
locally produced items. The place used to be a mixed use of neighborhood,
which comprises of residential as well as commercial space. But the city
expanded and more importance was given to commercial purpose, people
have moved from this area and converted their space to complete
commercial space.
WHY COMMERCIAL STREET?
Commercial street is one of the oldest streets where people from
different places visit for purchasing and selling their goods like
clothes, jewellery and electronics. And it is very well known for its
retro city and trade. Since it is located in the central part of
Bangalore and has bus facility located near the street it has good
access from all parts of Bangalore.

STUDY AREA
The study area covers a long stretch (495m) of commercial street between
Kamaraj road to Jumma masjid road. This area is located in ward 110 and
has street level merchants of all classes, including a mix of retail and whole
sale stores, services and restaurants.
It is well connected to public transport. The street is accessible from Shivaji
nagar bus depot from both directions ,at an approximate distance of 550m.
The street can be reached from two different direction :one from Bowring
and Lady Curzon hospital and another from the side of St Mary’s
Church .The terminus provides services to all parts of the city.

1. MERCHANTS SURVEY
There are 128 permanent shops and 25 temporary shops in
the street. In which 15 merchants were asked to fill in the
questionnaire.
The majority of merchants (60%) have operated for 25 years
or less. And the rest (40%) have operated for 145years to
25years.

The street contains all kinds of shops including handicraft,
accessories, clothing, food, shoes and others.
Since its one of the oldest streets people from other places have
their shops in the street. There are (75%) localities and (25%)
migrants. Both female and male work in the shops in which male
(80%) and female (30%).

Since it’s a commercial business and is based on profit and loss the
shops are operated in partnership basis (in case of more
investment business) and single ownership basis and many follow
it as there family business.

Other than owners there are many people who work in different
shops in commercial street. 79% of people work there as a side
business and 21% of people work there as a permanent business.
Customers come to commercial street based on their convenience.
Be it an average weekday or weekend. And it also depends on the
season, sales and quality of goods.

Shops in commercial street have different opening and
closing timings based on their convenience and sales.
2. CUSTOMERS SURVEY
As the part of the survey customers were asked to answer a
questionnaire.
According to the survey , 95% of the customers are female
and 5% male customers come to the street. It is more
convenient for the customers if they get all category of goods
in a place ,especially , clothing .

MODE OF TRANSPORTATION
Commercial street has different modes transportation which can
be used to commute to and fro like metro ,bus and auto. Since the
streets are narrow and no parking spaces are available, customers
prefer public transport than private transport.

RESULTS OF SURVEY:
SATISFACTION OF CUSTOMERS:
The customers and vendors are satisfied with Commercial
street for the most part as one can infer from the above chart.
Although, there were a small percentage of customers who
felt the quality of goods in Commercial Street has gone down
over the years.
We have inferred from the customer survey that it is
sustainable to establish a successful business in commercial
street for the following reasons :
Reasonable rates attract customers in large numbers;
A wide plethora of goods and collections to shop from;

People of all ages from teenagers to older women prefer to
shop here over malls; etc
We have inferred from the merchant survey that it is
sustainable to establish a successful business in
commercial street as:
1. Most of the shops have been running since many
decades and are still earning profits;
2. Stores of multiple kinds including low end and high end
will work out in this street;
3. A huge percentage of these stores are permanent
businesses furnishing their own profits without owners
needing side businesses ;etc
