9. Effects of the Spanish-American War A newspaper from February 15, 1998 which was the 100 year anniversary of the Spanish-American War. The war was called a “Splendid Little War” because when the USS Maine was destroyed the US went to war with Spain. The war only lasted 100 days approximately (only) 400 soldiers were killed. As a result, the US gained Guam, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Cuba. It was a short war, the US gained a lot of territory ,and the US became an imperialist world power.
